It wasn't just a one-time fluke — the Healthcare Marketing Underground really has returned with another special guest. Chris Bevolo is joined by Jill Austin, chief marketing officer at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, to preview their upcoming SHSMD Connections speaking session.
The duo dives deep into the change healthcare organizations are experiencing through the lens of Jill's experience at VUMC. In 2015, what began as an intense three-day visioning process turned into a year-long effort to reengineer the organization’s entire approach to marketing communications. Over the course of a year, the team continued to reconstruct their approach to marketing — evaluating and evolving their department structure, professional development program, and marketing plan.
Listen in as we reveal Jill's link to Andy Griffith and learn about her background in classical vocal music.

Boyer continues the conversation noting that he will be speaking at ATLAS on consumerism and how it continues to affect healthcare organizations. Chris Bevolo is joined this week by Dana Weymouth and our own Kate Caverno, senior account executive, and design intern Megan Shricel. After revealing the ingredients in ReviveHealth's custom cocktail, The Phoenix, the conversation turns to talking savvy shoppers and the myth of the ‘macho man’ in today’s healthcare world. The quad delves into how today’s society tends to be rather picky and choosey about the benefits and services they receive from healthcare providers while also debating who’s making these decisions at the end of the day. The discussion kicks off with a focus on how mainstream media is quick to take hot topics in healthcare and share them with the masses. Tune in to hear what they have to say about the glorified "history-making" topic referred to as consumerism, more specifically, patient consumerism, and what it means to us.

This week's podcast kicks off with a lot of background noise (was that the Jolly Green Giant?) and talk of all things fried at the Minnesota State Fair. As always, Chris Bevolo, Chris Boyer, and this week's third man, Dana Weymouth, segue into trending topics in healthcare marketing. Taking a Goofus and Gallant approach (anyone remember Highlights magazine?), they dissect two healthcare marketing blog posts, one of which makes a strong case for traditional advertising while the other focuses on the relevance of wearables. The trio argues that you can’t compare hospitals to consumer products like Apple, and no amount of advertising or content will motivate people about their health decisions if it's irrelevant to their real lives. Will the combination of personalized marketing and health wearables allow marketers to deliver more relevant content and influence healthcare consumer brand loyalty? Tune in to find out.

Title: “Are you a Wino?”
This week Chris Bevolo is joined by Chris Boyer and Jackie Olson. Their conversation begins with a myriad of topics including foodies, winos, and DJ’s. Then the conversation turns to content marketing in healthcare, as they feel like they board a time machine to review an article that claims brand journalism and wellness content are new publishing trends for hospitals (spoiler alert: they aren’t). They dive further into the importance of developing content for local health system news stories rather then just the “Meatless Monday” generic health information. Lastly, they touch on how the US Healthcare system ranks against other countries (spoiler alert: NOT dead last).

This week Chris Boyer hosts and is joined by Jackie Olson and Special Nashville Guest, Malea Barron (she meant Reising). They tackle a complex subject of hospital charity work and bad debt which goes deeper into the definition of not for profit and for profit hospitals. Malea gives great insight into how hospital finances work from the research done by University of San Fransisco. Chris highlights the shocking results that for profit hospitals charity care numbers are higher then not for profit hospitals. The crew also has enough time to talk about mobile advertising and of course Malea’s favorite TV Shows.
Not-For-Profit Hospitals May Not Trump For-Profits in Providing Uncompensated Care
http://www.ucsf.edu/news/2015/08/131191/not-profit-hospitals-may-not-trump-profits-providing-uncompensated-care
While not-for-profit hospitals receive substantial tax benefits, some do not provide free or subsidized care for a higher percentage of patients living in poverty than their for-profit counterparts, according to a study of California medical centers.
That is because eligibility criteria for tax-exempt status are ambiguous and there are no minimum requirements for hospitals’ financial assistance programs, say the researchers of the study published Aug. 3 in Health Affairs.
New York Times Plans to Make Its Mobile Ads More Native, Less Interruptive
"Mobile advertising as a whole is just fairly crappy," said Sebastian Tomich, The New York Times senior VP of advertising and innovation.
Mr. Tomich isn't saying anything controversial. Most people seem to agree that those thin horizontal banners pinned to the bottom of publishers' mobile sites haven't won many fans. Neither have the full-screen interstitial ads that can overtake a smartphone's screen while swiping between articles on many publishers' mobile sites, including the Times'. So the Times is doing away with them.

On June 26, 2015, major companies including Google, Tide, Coca Cola, Uber and Jet Blue found creative ways to announce their support for the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage. Ben and Jerry’s even temporarily renamed its chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream flavor – now “I Dough, I Dough” – to commemorate the occasion.
Showing support for a cause you care about can be a great public relations tool to engage audiences and celebrate your brand. But it doesn’t come without risk. Here are some things to consider if you’re trying to decide whether or not to take a stand

This week, Chris Bevolo, Adam Meyer and Chris Boyer deliver a short and simple podcast focused primarily on Chris Boyer’s interview with ehealthcarstrategy.com about the impact of mobile on SEO (search engine optimization). In it, they discuss how hospitals should evolve their websites to adopt a mobile-first strategy, and how Google’s new SEO algorithm is continually evolving to meet the ongoing movement to mobile. Of course, the conversation wavers to briefly address the Cecil the Dentist controversy…but still, this is an enjoyable (and short) techie podcast!

With subsidies protected, hospital leaders see brighter future

Hospital leaders expressed relief and delight Thursday after the U.S. Supreme Court solidified the future of subsidized insurance for low- and middle-income Americans in all 50 states under the Affordable Care Act.
The 6-3 ruling in King v. Burwell means that insurance will remain affordable for 6.4 million Americans in 34 states and that hospitals will have a payment source for many previously uninsured patients, though Republicans continue to call for repealing the ACA.
“We're just celebrating here today,” said Dr. Richard Gilfillan, CEO of Trinity Health in Livonia, Mich. “In our board meeting, there was just a yahoo, spontaneous shout and glee and then applause.”

Andy Conrad, the head of the life sciences team at Google, told Bloomberg that the band is intended to be used as a medical device by patients and in clinical trials. If it moves beyond this experimental phase, what ever they eventually call this health band will be a major step beyond the current selection of Android devices into something new.
Is Facebook Tracking Data on Users Who Use the Rainbow Profile Image Filter?
http://www.socialmediatoday.com/social-networks/adhutchinson/2015-06-30/facebook-tracking-data-users-who-use-rainbow-profile-image
Have we become so skeptical? Last Friday, the US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples would have the right to marry in all US states, an historic event and a major win for gay rights activists. To help users celebrate the announcement, Facebook unveiled a new option, enabling users to overlay their profile images with the rainbow flag, a symbol for the Pride movement. The option has been taken up by millions of users – as you would no doubt be aware, log onto Facebook or Facebook Messenger and your feeds will be awash with multi-colored images beaming back at you.

Chris Boyer hosts this week’s podcast and is joined by Adam Meyer, Dana Weymouth and the much-anticipated return of Jackie Olson! We kick off our discussion mentioning the Supreme Court decision on Obamacare, before we launch into an article that states that best brands are like shortcuts for our brains – and good branding appeals to our laziness. After that, we turn our focus once again to Chris’s favorite social media site, Instagram, and what the new upgrade means to brands using Instagram as part of their marketing activities.
Great Brands Are Like Shortcuts
http://blog.ama.org/great-brands-are-like-shortcuts/
The best brands are like shortcuts for our brains, and if we look at the brain’s wiring, it’s hardly surprising. Brains are, after all, incredible pattern-making machines. Their ability to learn tasks and to perform them almost unconsciously is incredible. Just getting ourselves out of the door in the morning takes thousands of automatic processes. From showering to eating to driving to work, the brain applies millions of learnings, making these tasks seem easy.
This also means that our brains are unbelievably lazy. Now don’t panic: It’s actually a good thing. The brain’s laziness has been more than useful and is the reason that we’ve constantly looked to improve things throughout history. Necessity is not the mother of all invention. Laziness is. We did not need remote controls, but they certainly make life easier. You can clearly see that a lazy mindset resulted in its invention: one lazy behind and a mind desperately trying to avoid moving from its position of comfort. That is the miracle of laziness.
Instagram now lets you see what’s trending and search for photos by location
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2015/06/24/instagram-now-lets-you-see-whats-trending-and-search-for-photos-by-location/?wpisrc=nl_tech&wpmm=1
Instagram hopes two new features will make its service a little easier to use: trending tags and the option to search for photos by location.
The updated app, which rolled out to users' phones Tuesday, will let people get a quick look at the hashtags that are shaping the conversation on the service that day. A glance at Tuesday's trending tags, for example, showed that users were posting about "National Pink Day," the video game "Arkham Knight" and "Olympic Day."

In this week's Healthcare Marketing Underground podcast, Chris Bevolo, Adam Meyer and Chris Boyer are joined by a special West-Coast guest...Elizabeth Musson. The group dives deep into the controversial topic of how Big Data is being used to learn more about consumers, how this knowledge can be used to personalize pricing, and how it might extend into healthcare. Then, the team turns its attention to the new way Instagram is advertising. Is Instagram advertising a game changer for this social media platform?

This week Chris Bevolo is back in the hosting seat and joined by Adam Meyer, Chris Boyer and Dana Weymouth. The group dives deep into a Time magazine article that introduces a new rating website that is compared to Yelp. This leads to a discussion about why hospital ratings and reviews are old news and the rationale behind these ratings sites. Then, they focus on the rise of mobile web uses and explain how accessing the internet from a desktop is not on decline but not also not growing. Finally, the guys get into a spirited discussion of personal email inbox management and the (mythical?) state of Inbox Zero.

In this week’s Healthcare Marketing Underground podcast, Chris Boyer assumes the hosting role for the first time, and is joined by Kriste Goad and Dana Weymouth in a lively discussion.
Kriste, Dana and Chris critique the way Amtrak failed to engage with their social media audiences until it was too late and how Plains All American Pipeline neglected social entirely when responding to their oil spill in Santa Barbara. Why do companies of today still neglect using social media as an integral part of their overall communication strategy?
Additionally, the team gets into what hospital websites of the future will look like, based on a Wall Street Journal article by Leah Binder of the Leapfrog Group.
