With a lasting peace established between Earth and Baltan mediated by the growing alliance with the mysterious Szzzyyyxx, a new chapter in human history begins. But in the midst of this, the Szzzyyyxx Mother requests Sally's help with a mystery. Two Szzzyyyxx vessels have disappeared in the far reaches of their space. Sally and Ian plan a controversial rescue mission with the first of a new line of experimental ships. They arrive in the region to discover a fold that doesn't appear to go anywhere. On closer inspection, however, they find evidence of a black hole and a strange world that defies understanding. Through the use of a machine established in eternity, The Szzzyyyxx have teleported to Earth in the 1960s. There, captured by the KGB, they unwittingly help a rogue agent rise to power and dominate the Earth. But the power he uses to do this opens a door to something far worse. With their own past erased, Sally and her crew must rebuild history and defeat an ancient and universal evil.

At long last, Sally's crew implements the plan that will restore their broken history, but the results are far from expected. The resulting conclusion leaves many interesting possibilities.
With the group together listening to Jackie's and Diego's explanation, they are joined by another who reveals more news, not only confirming what they have said, but raising some uncomfortable truths about somebody they thought they knew.
Jackie and Diego explain new revelations they have discovered while researching different versions of history. But the most disturbing discovery has to do with who Jackie and Diego really are and why they didn't exist in the other Ians world.
While preparing for an operation that could either aid Scott's flight or make things worse, Ian makes a sudden realization that changes everything.

After investigating the enemy ship, Jackie begins to discover who is behind the problem they must solve. Her artwork, as usual, brings out the essence of a nightmare.
Both Ians board the enemy ship, which has proven to be flown by a dead pilot, only to discover that it's the same ship Ian will one day find on Earth. But Jackie discovers something dark inside that nobody yet understands.
While Sally and Ian argue with Ian's counterpart from a different world, a devastating attack takes place elsewhere, and they are only now beginning to feel its impact.
Sally and both Ians discuss possible ways in which they can work together to solve their common problem, but dark information surfaces about who Angela might have been under different circumstances.

They find themselves inside a control room managed by their own imaginations, but capable of almost anything, including a round trip to Leningrad in 1964. But the Szzzyyyxx had gotten there first, and they had done some damage.
Diego's strange illness grants him amazing insight to the nature of the planet and its purpose. Sally and Ian choose to risk joining him, but something neither of them could imagine is brewing under the surface.
While trying to care for Spotty, who has mysteriously vanished, Diego develops an unusual illness. In the midst of this, Jackie makes a critical discovery about the nature of the world they are on.
Following the path left by the missing Szzzyyyxx ships leads Sally's crew to an unexpected trap. Like the other ships, they turn into the event horizon, but within there find themselves in an unknown and mysterious world that seems too perfect.
The farther Sally and her crew get from the Szzzyyyxx Domain, the less sense everything begins to make. Communication channels are degrading and even the chatter on the radio begins to sound foreign. But when they arrive at the last known location of the missing ships, they find a conduit to something truly dark.
Sally makes sudden progress in campaigning for her new mission, but the actual trip proves to be yet more interesting. Their first stop at the Szzzyyyxx Domain is cut short by an apparent threat from the Szzzyyyxx themselves. There is more that is not being told.
As Sally gathers her team in preparation for her new mission there is a strong sense that what is happening in Szzzyyyxx space has far greater implications than previously thought.
While Sally introduces a reluctant Earth official to the Szzzyyyxx Mother, she finds herself in an unusual position. The Szzzyyyxx need help and only the sort that humans could provide. Sally must now plan for a new mission with new technology.
