Hop aboard the hot air balloon of the mind! Join James and Alasdair as we float gently over the Vale of the White Horse. Quiet, peaceful, serene. That is, until you spot the enormous creature on the hill. What is that thing? A greyhound with a beak? A plesiosaurus in a sombrero? Or is it the Uffington White Horse?

It's the Uffington White Horse. But have a look at the graphic for this episode and ask yourself: has the artist actually seen a horse?

Eleanor Morton returns, with the remarkable tale of an Edinburgh haunting - and a school trip to the site of the nightmare! These are the legends of Mary King's Close, an underground street with more supernatural activity than you can shake a disembodied arm at.

Eleanor has a new book out on August 15th, and an upcoming Edinburgh Festival Fringe show all about ghosts. Plus, we decide once and for all whether there are any good Scottish women.

Alasdair takes James to Gallipoli (with layovers in Glasgow and County Durham) for a brace of chilling First World War ghost stories. (Which are slightly undermined by James's bizarre donkey conspiracy theories.)

Our source is Raymond Lamont Brown's 1975 Casebook of Military Mystery. So hop aboard Loremen Airways and enjoy the authentic 70s air travel experience. Stow your inhibitions in the overhead lockers, and yes - smoking is mandatory.

Get ready to cream your teas, because the boys are going to Cornwall. Join us, and meet West Country witches, the long-fingered ghost of Looe Island and a gritty reboot of Rumpelstiltskin. As James will tell you, Cornwall is such a mysterious county that no one really knows where it is.

These Cornish Terrors spring from the pages of The Folklore of Cornwall by Tony Deane & Tony Shaw. So this episode boasts more than double our usual Tony content.

James lures Alasdair to a bad mannered manor house in Dorset*. We're in Sandford Orcas - which is a village, not pod of Free Willies - and the place is simply brimming with ghosts!

From Ghosts in the South West by James Turner, Shakey tells a tale of troublesome monks, lunar assassins and one very macabre way of not getting blamed for farts. And you'll be pleased to know that this spooky/farty manor is currently on sale for less than five million quid - so get your offers in now!

If you manage to guess the nature of this episode's cryptid then please write in and claim your prize!

Inspired by Steve Cliffe's Moor Mysteries, James and Alasdair return to Derbyshire's Peak District. The Loremen are on the hunt for stones adorned with strange carvings. We're on the hunt for the truth about Parma Violets. And we are on the hunt for the most surprising beast in the podcast's history.

The Loremen return to the good old U S of America.

Inspired by a gift from a listener, the boys head to Monterey Bay, CA, and tangle with a whole bunch of sea beasts. (Or should that be school? Pod? Flock? What is the collective noun for aquatic cryptids?) We meet the monkey-faced Old Man of Monterey (AKA Bobo) and some real-life red-haired sea serpents.

So join us, under the sea! It's enchanting!*

*Yes that is a veiled Back To The Future reference. Yes, James wrote this blurb.

The Loremen lived again - again! This is the second installment of the live show recorded in Oxford (famed birthplace of the comma) as part of the Saint Audio Podcast Festival. James guides our live audience around the spooky environs of Oxford, this time courtesy of John Richardson's Oxford & County Ghost Stories.

In Part 2, the boys encounter a pair of workmen's ghosts up the Woodstock Road, we witness a clay-tastrophe and James manages to squeeze in a bonus story that he had ran out of time to tell in the live.

The Loremen lived again! This episode was recorded in Oxford (the Cambridge of Oxfordshire) as part of the Saint Audio Podcast Festival. James takes Alasdair and a live lorefolk audience on a tour of the county, courtesy of Mike White's book The Ox-Files.

In Part 1, the boys encounter an apparition in Burford, a haunted cellar and a teeny-tiny crocodile (deceased).

Apologies in advance for James's American accent. Part 2 is coming next week, but if you can't wait then the full Livestream is here:

Welcome to Bamburgh Castle! Make yourself at home, especially if you're name's Lancelot du Lac. Don't mind the enormous venom-spitting toad. There's a funny story behind that, actually. It's the Laidly Worm of Spindleston Heugh...

The boys visit Bamburgh, possibly England's most dramatic castle, rising up from the waves on a volcanic dolerite outcrop. And the legends surrounding the ancient Northumbrian settlement are no less dramatic. We're talking phoney ballads, wicked stepmothers, loathsome dragons and the mountain bard Drunken Frasier. Sorry, Duncan Frasier.

Plus, a cameo from legendary northern car dealership, Reg Vardy.

The Loreboys meet the audacious Scottish con man "Sir" Gregor MacGregor. Calling himself the Cazique of Poyais, this charismatic ex-soldier is the mastermind behind a debacle that will make Fyre Island look like Centre Parcs.

He's selling land and government bonds belonging to the Central American kingdom of Poyais. The big problem being: Poyais doesn't exist. The year is 1823, and this South Sea bubble is going to pop. Around 170 victims of the scam will die. But will Scotland's biggest hoaxter get off Scot free?

(Yes.)

Where wolves? James attempts to answer that question with a midnight excursion to Cannock Chase. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is home to a range of distinctly unnatural creatures. We're talking lycanthropes, black eyed children, numerous UFOs and at least one pigman.

In fact, there are many reports of uncanny incidents in Cannock Chase, James went all the way to Staffordshire to investigate. Alas, our intrepid loreboy encountered a much more human phenomenon.

James lures Alasdair back down to the water's edge for an Important Mermaid Update! The Hayfield Mermaid first appeared in Series 2 (get up to speed here). Somehow, the Loreboys managed to overlook yet another freshwater mermaid in a nearby bottomless pool. And the grasping creature that dwells in the waters of Blakemere has a heck of a backstory.

It's Hayfield Mermaids 2: Mere-lectric Mere-galoo!

This year's live show at the Leicester Comedy festival was a delight. The lorefolk were in fine form and James rustled up a folkloric feast, including 'facts' from Geoffrey Hodson's 1925 book Fairies at Work and at Play.

Sadly, fairy mischief meant that our recorder batteries died towards the end of the show, so the final portion of this episode has been reconstructed from a low-quality backup. You'll hardly notice! Unless you listen to the episode, in which case you'll definitely notice.

Why not defy the fairy curse and join us for another live show? The Loreboys are going live again in Oxford on May 25th:

April is the time for fooling, especially in Scotland where the first of the month is Huntigowk Day: a day for tartan paint, long stands and other bootless errands. James and Alasdair (a pair of anti-prank killjoys) spent this April Fool's investigating Loch Ness, a body of water which has seen more than its share of hoaxes. But one monster prank from April 1st 1972 really takes the cake.

Is that cake? Or is it an enormous, half-defrosted elephant seal? Find out when the Loreboys meet an English zoologist up to no good on the banks of Loch Ness.

The cats from Long Cat Media came back! Lindsay Sharman and Laurence Owen (who are so award-nominated they seem to have gained another nomination since last week) return. And they bring with them a first-hand sighting of a cryptid. That's right, Laurence saw Derbyshire's elusive Beast of Belper.

Meanwhile, James Shakeshaft has not been shake-shirking his research duties. He's on the trail of the Surrey Puma, and he's found photographic evidence that will blow you away (if you've never seen a picture of a normal cat before).

The cats from Long Cat Media lure the Loreboys to the wild, wild east. Lindsay Sharman and Laurence Owen (the excessively award-nominated podcasters behind Mockey Manor and Magenta Presents) are on the trail of a hound with a thunderous bark and eyes like saucers. It's a terrifying beast that can turn even the bravest churchgoer into a quivering, crumpled crisp packet of a man...

Yes, this episode brings the Loremen face-to-snout with East Anglia's infamous Black Shuck! And we welcome back Old Shuck's alter ego: the man-scrumpling dog of Bungay.

[RECORD SCRATCH] I suppose you're wondering how we got here? Well, it all started when James told Alasdair the story of a spectral hound that dwells on the border of Devon and Dorset. (AKA In-Dorset and Next-Dorset.)

A sighting of the black dog could be a bad omen, but it might just make you rich. (There is actually a third option, but that involves helium and a peculiarly shaped nozzle...)

No dogs were inflated during the recording of this episode.

What does it sound like when a spooky story has James Shakeshaft quaking in his (big giant's) boots? You'll find out in this episode, because Alasdair has torn two hair-raising mysteries from the pages of W. T. Stead's book of Real Ghost Stories.

Meet a hard-as-nails northern ghost in a train station cellar, and swim frantically away from the eyeless lady of Willington Mill. Grab your gilets and slankets, and prepare for your spine to be tingled and/or chilled.

James has been fossil-hunting in Devon (AKA Next-Dorset) and he has unearthed the tale of a horrible old judge who just won't stay buried. It's the story of the Monmouth Rebellion, "Hanging" Judge Jeffries and the Bloody Assizes. (Those bloody assizes).

Expect some baffling pub names, a smattering of actual history, and a chance to learn the difference between a bugle and a beagle. (You really shouldn't blow into a beagle.)

Yes, of course there are ghosts.

Believe it or not, there once was a time when the hottest show in town was a pig doing maths. A porcine professor might not sound as binge-worthy as The Traitors or a double bill of Miss Marple, but back in 1817 people flocked to see this canny swine. James presents the story of a learnéd pig named Toby, as told in his own words. (The pig's own words, that is.)

John Alington was an English eccentric who really put the "letch" in Letchworth. This randy reverend scandalised Hertfordshire with his saucy sermons and rock-and-roll hijinks. Alasdair tells James the peculiar history of a very rich man with a penchant for leopardskin and massively over-explaining things.

Plus, an unusual attorney, a pair of identical twin poachers and a ghostly monk chucked in for chills.

It's our first proper episode of the year, and we're welcoming back Deputy Loreperson, Chris Cantrill!

Chris drops in to plug the Delightful Sausage's upcoming Radio 4 series Icklewick FM, and to whisk James and Alasdair off to a medieval wonderland of his own devising. Expect a tale of betrayal and intrigue from the borderlands of England (and Scotland). And prepare to be utterly astonished... because Chris actually read the book beforehand this time.

This episode was edited by Joseph Burrows - Audio Editor.

  • 13: Denizens of Another World
  • 12: The Vampyre with Sacha Coward

Ewww! A low stakes, gross ghost! James tells ABK about some well-documented (but not encouraged) ghosts from Derbyshire.

Something about the formerly-ruined building of Haddon Hall has stirred the poetic side of James. He even reads out a bit of what some would consider poetry, or indeed poesie*. This episode also features the stunning debut of brand new character "Geordie Samuel L Jackson".

If you’re walking home late one night, and you hear something rolling along beside you – beware! You might have encountered the Sac Bàn - AKA the Seckyban or the White Sack. Alasdair chills James to his marrow with the legend of a creature who rolls around the byways of Scotland like an angry pudding. You see, a sighting of the White Sack means death!

From the Hollow of the White Sack to the Creagan Change House, this episode features several dodgy pronunciations, sixteen old men, two noms de plume, and the longest trip to the off license in folklore history.

Alasdair takes James to Canterbury, in Kent*, a city positively brimming with ghosts. The boys skip from the Roman streets to a tea house, which boasts its own unique ghost room. But! What begins as a grisly interior design show ends up as a hard hitting exposé. Folklore or FAKElore? You decide.

We also come up with some Chaucer-themed business ideas. If you open a Canterbury grocers that sells only parsnips called "The Parsonips Tale" you have to pay us royalties.

There's a lot to get your teeth into here. And a lot of panels to hide your teeth behind, if that's what you're into. Incidentally**, why not pop into Tiny Tim's Tea Rooms and book yourself on a Canterbury a ghost tour?

  • Actual Kent, this time.
    ** Tooth pun!

The Loremen meet a quadruple threat. This kid is no mere zombie vampire wizard. He's Welsh too. James brings in the story of a Hereford revenant who had simply too much going on.

This tale is taken from Witchcraft in Britain by "Christ in a hole", it's Christina Hole. And from the writings of 12th century historians/liars William of Newburgh and Walter Map. (Do check out Wally's pic on Wikipedia. So cheeky!)

Halloween may be over, but it is always spooky season on Loremen. With that in mind, James brings in a tale of a Berkeley Witch whose last request is as elaborate as it is ineffectual. Poor wee James is under the weather this week, so his deep bass baritone is even bassier than usual. And yes, Alasdair does dole out a couple of pity points.

There's a chance James has touched on this tale before, but never in such detail, or at such a low octave. Get it down your ears!

As part of the Cheerful Earful Podcast Festival, James and Alasdair take to the stage on the spookiest night of the year. We meet the Saxon bad-boy Hereward the Wake, and ask - at what point does putting heads on spikes stop being a hobby and start being a job?

Accompanied by a fine bunch of Lorefolk (hand-picked like the spookiest of Scottish kale) James tells a story featuring way too many Mission Impossible rubber masks and more Normans than you can shake a spike at. (The French kind of Normans, not the Hale or Pace type).

Kintyre is the name of a mysterious (and objectively NOT sexy) peninsula in the western highlands of Scotland. Alasdair plumbs its depths, skips along its beaches and gazes at its glinting surface, hypnotised by his own reflection. A little Loreman met a Pie Man, going to the fair. Said little Loreman to the Pie Man, "Is Datchworth Green near Ware?" And the Pie Man said, "Yeah, but it's closer to Knebworth."

James takes Alasdair to the many-spectred village of Datchworth in Hertfordshire - a hamlet terrorised by both spirits of the dead and a flesh-and-blood highwayman. From poor farmer Pennyfather, to Oakenvalley Bottom and the vigilantes of Queen Hoo Hall, this episode is replete with classic Loreboy gibberish.

The boys meet the Pie Man of Datchworth fair, and learn why you can't solve all your problems with beheading. We hope you'll think twice, in future.

Alasdair bundles James into a red telephone box and dials S for snail. There are ghosts in the wire. There are signals from the other side. The Wichita lineman is still on the LIIIIINE.

Comedian Yuriko Kotani returns to the pod to tangle with a shapeshifting trickster. The tanuki (or racoon dog) is both a real animal and a very cheeky yōkai. (That’s a spirit in Japanese folklore, but you probably knew that.) This furry little fellow is famed for his enormous… that is to say his massive… well… he’s got a lot of chutzpah, let’s leave it at that.

But who’s that by the side of the road? A crying loreman? A tricksy tanuki? Or could it be Japan’s chilling faceless ghost… the noppera-bō?

Man vs Cow! The epic battle continues.

James tells the romantic tale of the English knight Guy of Warwick, who (rather unromantically) killed a massive cow. The cow was very, very angry and bigger than a van, so don't judge Guy too harshly. He also killed a handful of dragons, but we skip over them. It was all a witch's fault, really.

Listen carefully, and you will learn about a rude flower, what sneezes mean and what NOT to do with children's teeth.

The Loreboys are still in the county of Cornwall when they encounter a remarkably haunted inn named The Dolphin. And, steel yourself listener, because Alasdair not only visited the titular pub, he actually received a message from the other side.

PLUS a bonus excerpt from James's appearance on The Quantum Mechanics https://t.co/kjWayikqVO, when the team went to look at a standing stone, to see if it moved. (It didn't.) Also available here: youtube.com/loremenpodcast

James takes Alasdair way out west; as far west as you can go in the UK without getting wet. We're talking about the wall of corn itself: Cornwall, and the tale of a peculiar vicar who managed to alienate his entire community.

Basically, this episode is like Wild Wild West, but with two Kevin Klines and no Will Smiths. Guest starring: a pack of dogs; a 14th Century heretic and some lovely, lovely apples!

Plus, eagle-eared listeners will spot some classic Loremen Mispronunciations.

James dazzles Alasdair with a selection of grifts, scams and swindles from Edo period Japan. Marvel at the adventures of the legendary Hikoichi, featuring a bucket of fish-guts, a red-faced demon (literally and figuratively) and pub-based nudity.

This marks the Loremen's long-awaited return to the shed / garret livestream format. If you want to witness it all with moving images (and an hour of extra "content"), head over to https://youtube.com/live/9rVYXOTMrKQ.

The Loreboys are off galivanting! Well, Alasdair is on tour in the UK and James is on a family holiday in Japan. (Friend of the podcast: Japan.) So, think of this episode as a horror anthology. If you're afraid of talking cats and hairy trees, that is.

In April 2022, the Loremen recorded their shortest episode ever: Dame Creswyke’s Spectre. Did you think one haunted hotel was all Moreton-in-Marsh had to offer? Well, you were wrong!

That sleepy Cotswold town on the Fosse Way is a veritable horn of plenty. Plenty of ghosts, that is. Expect spectres, mists, coughs, sensations and a bevy of airborne phenomena.

England's best "true" vampire story springs from the pages of the prolific hob-nobber Augustus Hare. Bleh! Alasdair tells James a blood-soaked Cumbrian legend, gleaned from Hare's (ludicrously long) autobiography. Sorry, autobiographies.

The walrus-faced Hare had a gift for extracting dubious ghost stories from minor aristocrats. And tales seldom come taller than that of the Croglin Grange vampire. An isolated bungalow; a lonely young woman; and a scratch, scratch, scratch at the window...

Prepare yourself for eccentric toffs, desecrated crypts, and an elderly aunt who ate someone's arm. You know, the usual.

Could this be our most respectful episode yet? Inspired by the crowning of Charles 3: Return of the King, the Loremen recap the entire King Chuck franchise. James recounts Charles I's ghostly premonitions and the much more boring Charles II is briefly mentioned as well.

In devastating news, James discovers that he was mispronouncing the word "chrism" throughout the entire coronation. Like the history of Britain's monarchy, the reality is much, much worse than you can imagine.

This episode also features respectful cameos from King Cnut, a serial killer turned mayor and little Jimmy Shakes himself.

Duchess, Poisoner, Spectre, Spy. James and Alasdair leap back to the English Civil War and meet the two-timing royalist schemer Elizabeth Murray. Her Richmond home is haunted by stories of intrigue, betrayal and ghosts. And a little dog too.

The gloomy pile that is Ham House was Elizabeth's lifelong passion. Some believe that she never left. Visit Ham and maybe you will hear the old duchess rapping.

(With her cane, on the floor.)

Horace Walpole was the O.G. Goth (Original Goth Goth). He was an eccentric 18th Century writer, who transformed a modest cottage in Twickenham into a plaster and papier-mâche fantasy. Join James and Alasdair as we venture into the gloomsome, vaulted hallways of The Gothic.

Sorry, Gothick.

This episode features Strawberry Hill ghost stories from Patsy Sorenti and a chilling tale from the unwary prankster Davy Craig. There's a wooden cravat and a gigantic suit of armour. And, as a special treat, James tries to guess what John Dee's Speculum was.

He gets it wrong.

James takes Alasdair on a tour of the 'summer lands' - Somerset - and the wee folk that dwell there. They live inside stones, beneath mounds and under at least one castle. (It's not there anymore, don't look for it.)

We are talking fairies, faeries and indeed, the fae. You've got to be careful with these temperamental critters. They'll just as soon give you a golden nugget as turn into a cloud of bees and have your eyes out.

We probably shouldn't have called them 'critters'. Sorry, lads. No harm done, eh?

In an old Tudor house near Marlborough there is a chamber that legends call the justice room. Evil-doers beware! The spirit that lingers in that old "Oaken Place" is determined to wring the life out of any villain that spends a night there alone.

That is, if we are to believe the tale of a long-dead actor, an elderly maid and a still-living podcaster who went to mime school. (The last one is James "I'm acting like it's windy" Shakeshaft.)

Join the Loremen as we follow the trail of an exceptionally unpleasant ghost-hunter, haunted by spectral horses, ghostly sobbing and castanets. For some reason.

The Denham Tracts might sound like the pamphlets of choice for James “Double Denim” Shakeshaft. In fact, they were the work of a County Durham folklorist with an ear for proverbs and an eye for the weird.

Does King Arthur sleep beneath the Castle of the Seven Shields? Do Hedgehogs engage in nocturnal milk-larceny? And if you live anywhere near Leeds, are you prepared for the Puddening?

These questions - and more - will be answered, as the Lorebois leaf through the Denham Tracts, looking for words that sound a bit rude. This episode is a 'ganger', like Willy Pigg’s d* a.

After all, “It’s a hobbly road, as the man said when he fell over a cow.”

Brighton and Hove: quiet, peaceful, serene... that is until Shrove Tuesday comes round! The Loreboys discover that while Brightonians are a forward-thinking and open-minded bunch, they have real issues when it comes to one particular bird.

(It's chickens. You guessed that.)

This is a tale of Vikings and fowl play, and it may be our most controversial episode yet. James makes enemies of The Danes, red heads, chickens and ducks. And Alasdair launches phase one of the ABK Cinematic Universe (The ABKCU).

Did the Devil themself come to town on a cold February night in Devon and just sort of wander around? That's just one of the hypotheses put forward to explain the uncanny appearance of prints in the snow all across the county.

Was it Old Nick? Or was it a gang of kangaroos? An acrobatic rodent? Or, like so many things in life, was it simply badgers?

Who knows? YOU DECIDE. We certainly don't.

Naturally, they take their new deputy straight to Northampton, home of comic book legend Alan "Alan" Moore. The Loremen return to the Leicester Comedy Festival, and James has brought a triptych of spine-tingling tales from the neighbouring county of Rutland. (Do look for it, it is there.) James's tales boast a credulous chemist, a spectral mist and an old man who liked sitting TOO much. Many thanks to the Lorefolk who turned out and giggled appreciatively.

The whole affair was (incompetently) livestreamed by the Lorebois themselves: the PJ and Duncan of folklore. So you can see Alasdair and almost none of James's face here:

It's (just gone) Valentine's day, and the Loremen were planning to stop off at a petrol station to buy you a box of chocolates.

But instead, we bring you Jenny Collier! And a fresh story from the Mabignogion. This year's Welsh valentale is especially romantic. If you think an entire person made out of flowers is romantic.

The lorebois (and lore-gal) brave a challenging combination of dodgy microphones and Welsh names, and come out smelling like a person made out of roses. Also, if you were dating a person made entirely out of flowers, would giving them flowers come across as a threat?

A manuscript found in a secret drawer sends the Loremen down an especially curious rabbit hole; James relates a close encounter between a Victorian carpenter and multifaceted entities from outer space. (One of which turns out to be a total bore.)

It's the kind of outlandish tale that a cynic might call "obviously fake," but once a legend gets started, it's harder to stop than an armoured fox.

Beloved semi-sausage Amy Gledhill returns to the pod to meet the Wold Rangers of Yorkshire's East Riding. The wold's green lanes were once famous for Snaffling Jock, Mushroom Charlie, Slapface Ned and more strange, unique characters: nomadic gentlefolk around whom legends grew.

Crash! And the church steeple crumbles to dust. Parishioners - dead! The sermon - a write off.

This episode raises many questions. Is James Shakeshaft folklore's answer to Quenetin Taratantino? Was The Great Thunderstorm of Widecombe-in-the-Moor the work of ball lightning, or the Devil himself? Can the loreboys go a full episode without a Bowie impression?

(Sadly, only one of those questions is answered. And the answer is: no, of course not.)

Do you remember Halloween? It wasn't ages ago! This year, James and Alasdair commemorated old Samhain with a super-spooky livestream. Sorry, liveSCREAM.

James tells Alasdair the story of Dickie - the Screaming Skull of Tunsted Farm. It is a tale as old as time: a human skull that, if removed from a house, causes all sorts of trouble. You're listening to Loreboys Investigate: When Glove Puppets Kill. Alasdair helps James get better acquainted with one Mr Punch: the nastiest little man in England. And that is a very competitive field indeed.

In this episode, the Loreboys take on a true folk antihero. Mr Punch is malevolent, puckish and proud. And just like Super Mario, he's lost his Italian accent. Find out why you should never touch your neighbour's sausages, and learn how the Punch and Judy show influenced the writing of ghostmaster-general, M. R. James.

This episode was recorded in front of a very well-mannered live audience as part of the Cheerful Earful Podcast festival.

Content Warning: Punch and Judy is a traditional form of children's entertainment, so expect bloody murder and domestic violence.

This week the Loreboys are armed with reviews! Not for themselves, but for Lancashire / Yorkshire's glorious River Ribble. Some folks say it was David Bowie's favourite river. (It's us, we say that.) But do make sure you appease the ghost of Peg O' Nell - or a one star review will be the least of your worries...

Robin Allender of the Moon Under Water podcast and Your Own Personal Beatles is a fine Bristol lad with a tale or two to tell. How many ships sail in the ocean above the stars? None, you might think - but sheriff Shakeshaft and deputy Allender have identified more than one historic UFO in the West Country region. (And one in Kent, but you can’t have everything.) ABK is there too, sitting in judgement like an ageless god, older than time itself.

Prepare yourself for a lot of impressions that end up being Ringo.

Beware traveller! For Northumberland's Simonside Hills are the setting for this week's tale. Those rugged crags are thick with evil, evil creatures who want nothing more than to lure you to your doom. Fear not! Alasdair Beckett-King is here to warn of of their tricksy ways, while James Shakeshaft looks on, scornfully.

Hear how a Shakeshaft-type spent a miserable night in a horrible little cottage, while an ABK-esque sceptic came a cropper in a bog. It's all the work of the nastiest  faerie-folk in the Unseelie Court.

James introduces Alasdair to the original prankster himself, Oliver Cromwell! Legendarily one of history's great monsters, Cromwell was actually very annoying on an interpersonal level too. Let the Loremen fill you in on some of Olly Crom's lesser-known legends - his (terrible) sense of humour, the town he definitely didn't destroy and whatever became of his disembodied head.

Prepare yourself for an uncommonly respectful episode, with a lengthy sidebar discovering the difference between seasoning and a condiment.

Having come into the possession of certain manuscripts on North American lore, James Shakeshaft whisks you off to Spokane in Washington State. Supposedly the healthiest city in the world, Spokane has so many serial killers they need their own subcategories.

This episode welcomes Alasdair back from Edinburgh for a whistle-stop tour of a city that will tickle your funny bones while simultaneously tingling your spine. Meet a candy poisoner, a faith healer, the oldest ghost EVER and the Loreboy's annoying alien sidekick Spokey-doke.

(His catchphrase is "Spokey-dokey!" and we hate him.)

*In the smoking room of the Loregentleman’s Club, Mr James Shakeshaft puffed on his pipe with a look of consternation. He found the silence intolerable.

“D— it, man,” he said at last, “what the devil did you mean by your message? ‘I saw a house that wasn’t quite right,’ what a load of old rot.”

Mr Alasdair Beckett-King, seated in the chair opposite, peered at Shakeshaft through a yellowish haze and his drooping eyes sparkled in the firelight...*

This evening’s podcast begins with Alasdair telling James a tale about the Midlands. A land that is neither North nor South. A land replete with mystery and intrigue. A land whose accent neither Loregent can do.

Northamptonshire.

Beginning with the three-sided folly of Ruston Triangular Lodge, the boys discover a drumming well, a perambulating doll and a haunted church that’s thick... wi’ rabbits.

Hop in James's childhood car (a Mazda 323) and take a trip to Burford, jewel of the Cotswolds. Home of the Burford Garden Centre, Cotswold Wildlife Park and, naturally, ghosts.

Recorded on one of the hottest days in England's history, the Loremen face drought, a flaming coach, and the dusty vengeance of bad old Lady Tanfield. (And Lord Tanfield is hardly better.)

The Bois squeeze a bit of genuine history into this episode. Meanwhile, Alasdair gets on his hobby horse about the enclosure of public lands, and James launches into a bizarre rant about colanders.

Is this our rudest episode title yet? Cock Lane is a small street in the City of London, infamous for not having a ghost in it. Alasdair introduces James to the "Scratching Fanny" behind the Cock Lane haunting, and the Lorebois go on to encounter a plethora of poltergeists (ahem... polterguys). This episode features celebrity cameos from Anne Robinson and Roger Moore, plus a pair of graveyard ghosts having a truly royal rumble.

We also tiptoe around the gruesome legend of King Edward II's horrible end's horrible end.

  • Benedict Arnold! (Whoever that is)

But above all, expect the joyous bonhomie of a gathering of loyal lorefolk. (The collective noun is a "pedantry" of lorefolk.)

It's season four of Loremen! It's 4oremen. 4men? Either way, we're one man short of opening a profitable burger chain. And it's time for William Adams 2: The Secret of the Ooze.

The first Englishman in Japan is starting to get comfortable in his new home/prison, but he is about to run into Jesuits, the East India Company and a particularly unpleasant maritime pornographer. Prepare yourself for a tale of hubris, smooth-talkers and a very rude misreading of 'Three Mile Island'.

For a more fulsome (and less silly) telling of the story, James's main source for this episode was Giles Milton's wonderful book, Samurai William.

Content Warning: No new willies are pulled off in this episode. But we do reference the willy-pulling in S3 Ep107.

Content warning - we say "willy" a LOT

In 1600, William Adams was the first Englishman to visit Japan. Little was known about Japan at that time, apart from IN Japan where they knew pretty much all about it. In this, Part One of Adams's tale, we follow what must be one of history's most meandering, misbegotten and (probably) malodorous sea voyages.

They really did not plan it well.

The Loreboys are also exploring unknown territory with this, our first 2-part episode. The full story of William Adams was simply too long and revolting for a single episode. Part Deux will be with you in two weeks' time, because we're going to take next week off and have a little rest.

Seaton Delaval Hall was once home to Sir Francis Blake Delaval - the man who puts the "pranks" in "I am sick of this guy's terrible pranks". But, although living with Sir Francis must have been a nightmare, it doesn't compare to the gruesome tale he told of the Wallsend Witches.

At the stroke of midnight, the Loreboys meet a gaggle of hags in the old church. We learn why Hadrian's Wall is so jumpable, and how to spot Jeremy Beadle in disguise.

Meanwhile, James Shakeshaft's run of bad luck... continues.

The Loremen are joined by supernatural pod king* Danny Robins! Danny is the voice behind Haunted, The Battersea Poltergeist and Uncanny, as well as being an award-winning playwright. And he brings James and Alasdair a little-known North-Eastern legend: The Cauld Lad of Hylton. Was the Cauld Lad a ghost? A sprite? A murder victim? Or just an annoying guy who didn’t know how ducks work?

Darting between Newcastle and Sunderland, we also encounter a somewhat smutty version of the Fish and the Ring, and a carefully censored account of Pollard’s Boar.

*He’s king of supernatural podcasts NOT king of the pod people.

Since the dawn of time, humanity has dreamed of one thing: making a little robot head that talks in a funny voice. Alasdair and James chart the history of that dream, from Friar Bacon's diabolical brazen head to Professor Faber's ill-fated "Euphonia". With more body-horror than you would normally expect in an audio-based medium, it's the story of some of the strangest head-cases England has ever seen.

The Loremen go dragon-spotting in Yorkshire! From the Worm of Sexhow to the Dragon of Filey Brigg, Alasdair uncovers a simple traybake recipe that you can use to defeat a fiery serpent. Meanwhile, James dredges up a terrible childhood memory and irrevocably damages the dynamic of the podcast. So, a normal episode really.

Listen out for fishy folklorist Ruth L. Tongue. and frenemy of the show Chris L. Cantrill.

James delivers a triptych of tales, originating in the land of dreams. Chief among them is the Pedlar of Swaffham - the story of a country bumpkin who goes to That London and stands on a bridge. For ages. Are the locals friendly? What do you reckon, geeza?

This episode is brought to by those titans of the fruit industry, Big Pear. (This will make more sense after you've listened.)

-Disturbing mascots from the 90s

-Excellent Scottish accents

-Also James also does his Scottish accent

It's a festive crossover! Alasdair and James have been spirited away by the Midnight Library’s Miranda Merrick.

Where better to spend the festive interregnum twixt Christmas and New Year than nipping down the pub for a cheeky ale and a packet of beef clippings? Who cares if the pub in question is Miranda’s creepy local, The Broom and Fang? This time, the boys have to sing for their supper, with dynamite tales of smuggling, treachery and… revenge. Marsden Grotto in South Shields, a drinking establishment located in a hollowed-out cliff, is a cave-based boozer. A speleological hostelry. The ultimate hole-in-the-wall.

And, yes, it’s haunted.

An otherworldly clown from the Isle of Wight encounters two wide-eyed human children. And, in other news, Marek Larwood meets James and Alasdair. Marek, comedian (We Are Klang) and card game inventor (Pooman), dons the mantle of Deputy Loreperson and relates one of the strangest tales the Loreboys have ever heard. What exactly is Sam the Sandown Clown? A ghost? An extra terrestrial? A child's obvious lie? You decide.

Prepare yourself for tuneless birthday songs and the triumphant return of the category "It's IT from Steven King's IT".

Big clumps ahoy! The Loremen encounter two large hills, each with beech trees atop. They're easily the top beech-tree-topped hills covered by this podcast since Chanctonbury Ring.

The clumps are steeped in history, drenched in sauce and, sadly for James, riddled with poetry. And, yes. Don't worry, we talk about that Beatles documentary that everyone is talking about at the moment.

Alasdair and James return to the furthermost reaches of (what we jokingly call) the United Kingdom. It’s Shetland! This time we’ve found ourselves a local guide in the form of comedian, storyteller and improvisor – Marjolein Robertson. Learn why you should never mention a ‘beniman’ aboard a boat and why there’s no such thing as a free shirt.

Somehow, the loreboys manage to run afoul of an ancient sea god, oil riggers and – their mortal enemy – the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT).

A dead husband returns with a dreadful warning... Yes, it's another spoopy episode!

This tale of tragedy and terror comes from the North East of England. Whilst we think it might not be a real ghost (and we are certain it's not a real chicken) this investigation does afford a rare opportunity to meet Joseph Stalin at the seaside. And is only slightly undermined by the Loreboys laughing at the protagonist's name.

What is the Margate Shell Grotto? A Roman temple? A cubbyhole of the Knights Templar? The lair of a very odd Batman villain? Getting to the bottom of this subterranean head scratcher, the Loreboys meet the semi-aquatic Lord Rokeby and discover the tragic consequences of a rodent-bird love triangle. All of this, in front of a live studio audience!

A trilogy of bone-chilling subterranean tales are unearthed by James, in Part 1 of our 100th episode “spectacular.” Marvel, as the Loremen encounter a mummy’s curse, get lost in the Kennington Loop and come face-to-face with an Absolute Bad Boy.

We also learn the French term for earthquake and answer the age-old riddle: when is a wig, not a wig? And finally, the disembodied voice of (friend of the show) Chris Cantrill holds the Loreboys to account.

Recorded in front of a live studio audience, full of loyal Lorefolk. Plus one guy who looked very confused.

The Soap Woman of Lake Crescent

The Loremen visit Twin Peaks country, and in damn fine company. The year is 1940 and Forrest Burgess (off of Astonishing Legends) takes Alasdair and James to the shores of Lake Crescent in Washington State. Plumbing its chilly depths, we uncover a murderer, a hardboiled detective and an underwater corpse-catcher.

We also stop off for a malt at Mount Olympus, visit the Hall of American Names and learn why there’s really no such thing as a good bundle.

Content Warning: This episode includes details of a real murder case and – implicitly – domestic violence.

You know the feeling. It's night-time and you're all alone. You get the strangest feeling that if you look into the glass of a darkened window, you might see a scary figure looking back at you?

Well, the tale that Alasdair Beckett-King chills James Shakeshaft with in this episode is ever so similar. Except it's daytime, you're in church with other people, and the figures seem to be acting out a boring play. So... the same. It's the fenestral spectres of Trinity Church in York.

Ah, the Isle of Thanet! A place of great antiquity. Some say its name comes from "Ynys Thanatos" - the Isle of the Dead - a folkloric curio which James totally neglects to mention, and instead spends most of the episode talking about rollercoasters. But the ups-and-downs of Thanet don't end there. We also have an over-hyped hero, a touchy ghost and someone called Erminburga. Plus at least one "fun fact" and minimum two murdered princes. Robin Ince (R4's Infinite Monkey Cage & The Cosmic Shambles Network) takes the Loremen for a meander along Grim's Ditch. On the way, they encounter everything from 1970s horror films to 1970s folk horror films. Plus some very lazy ghosts, a prophetic river and a film franchise that will doubtless rival the great trilogies (Back To The Future, The Godfather and Big Momma's).

Alasdair takes us to the most remote (inhabited) place on earth! Prepare yourself for mutineers, Neo-Pagans and a giant glass ball full of noisome gases. We meet Thursday October Christian and discover that paradise is not all it's cracked up to be.

There's a lot to learn from this episode: when not to go to a party, how many Chuckle Brothers there were, and which is better, Tahiti or Norfolk?

James has dug up a genuinely spooky inn-based tale this week. The Birdcage is a 600+ year old public house with a fearsome ghost, a horrible history and a serious pigeon problem. Be warned, this ghost frightens women, children, Australians and pornographers alike.

The Loreboys also encounter Batman's shabbiest foe, and wilfully denigrate the filmography of a beloved comic actor. (Sorry, Robin Williams.)

Old York, Old York. So York they named it York. Amy Gledhill (Radio 2, The Delightful Sausage, A Lovely Time) joins the Loreboys to delve into the story of York's original party animal: Brother Jucundus. He was a monk-about-town who took a little more of the holy spirit than was good for him. "Up, up, up we go!"

This episode features a cut-out-and-keep joke that listeners can say whenever they are in York. (Unless James Shakeshaft is also in York, in which case he will be saying it.)

King Jimmy the 1st and/or 6th of England and/or Scotland had quite a rough ride, from “witnessing” a political assassination in utero to being attacked by the world’s rudest cat. This monarch’s silver spoon was something of a double-edged sword (like that special knife designed for cutting grapefruit and/or your tongue). In fact, some believe that little Jim Royal didn’t make it out of short trousers.

Will the Loreboys solve the Edinburgh Castle Mystery? [Inhales sharply through teeth like a builder] “we could mate, but it’ll cost ya…”

Award-winning comedian Jenny Collier makes her annual Valentine's pilgrimage to tell the Loreboys about another Welsh romance. As usual, the story in question proves... disturbing. This week it's The Lady in the Lake - but not the one you're thinking of. Prepare for Welsh words that sound rude in English, and English words that are distinctly rude about the Welsh.

Content Warning: This is a very light-hearted episode, but characters in the tale take an attitude towards domestic violence and infant mortality that listeners are unlikely to share. Also, one of the Welsh words sounds REALLY rude.

A time-hopping ghost story from Oxfordshire, this episode boasts not only a "magic" potion, but trials, castles, clumsy legs and Henley-on-Thames.

Essentially, James has just watched Christopher Nolan's Tenet and decided to tell a simple story as extravagantly and confusingly as possible. It's actually a really good yarn. But you'll need to watch a number of YouTube explainer videos to appreciate it. You know, like all the best films.

Chris Cantrill of The Delightful Sausage (BBC Radio 2) returns! And, having moved to Cumbria, he has a brand new story up his grubby little sleeve.

Meg Merrilies was a highwaywoman from "the pasten days" who was ruthless in her pursuit of riches, a hobby which some say has continued beyond the grave... However, Chris devotes most of the show to describing a nearby tea room's delicious tray bakes. If you've never heard the words "tray bake" before, you will be sick of them by the end of this episode.

To his credit, Chris's story includes First Hand Witness Testimony™, and you won't believe how badly a man from Bradford can mangle the word "lure".

A thrilling Kentish episode this week! James recounts the legend of 14th century kick-machine Sir Robert de Shurland. He kicked cattle. He kicked commoners. He kicked clergymen. NO ONE was safe from his pied-à-terror!

This ep features a B-plot concerning a sailor's corpse with a wicked grin, who wreaked havoc on Kent's coastal churchyards. James pushes the boundaries of podcast storytelling* and gives you a startlingly accurate idea of the size of the Isle of Sheppey. (It's approximately Bristol plus Winchester).

*tells the story slightly out of chronological order for dramatic effect.

Alasdair takes us on a journey to the Otherworld. The tale begins at the Peak District's rudest tourist attraction, stops off at Yorkshire's sauciest Neolithic mound and then emerges from the "ancient cavities" of Suffolk. The Green Children of Woolpit raise more questions than they answer. Do aliens exist? Do fairies? What about Australians? What are they all about?

Faringdon in Oxfordshire is a peculiar town. The folly comes with a health warning and the doves are painted neon colours. The most unsurprising thing about the place is that the graveyard has a ghost: the headless spectre of poor Hampden Pye.

James spills the beans on how Hampden lost his head, when all about were keeping theirs.

Also, it was very, very hot when we recorded and we are very, very English. So we moan about it. A lot.

James Shakeshaft plays against type by offering up a story that's very nearly historically accurate.

The legend of the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary or 'Barometz' seemed so plausible. It was a grazing lamb that grew on a bush; it seemed like it HAD to be real. The stories were so convincing a series of extraordinarily named men launched expeditions to find it. They didn't find it. It's not a real thing. Come one, a vegetable lamb? What next, strawberry crackling? Beef tomatoes? BLOOD ORANGES?!

Swedish comedian Evelyn Mok brings us a selection of Scandinavian stories about nymphs.

This episode is like a delicious selection of small, tasty treats. If only there were an appropriate Swedish word for that...

Nope, can't think of one.

Prepare for an abundance of naked nymphs and some phallus-y fallacies, all from Sweden's SECOND best city - Gothenburg.

Jenny Collier returns! Again!

This episode answers the age-old question, "how many is too many plagues?" We discover that finding the dead centre of Britain is surprisingly controversial. And we ask hard-hitting questions about 1980s TV star and evil puppet, Pob. Questions such as, "you don't remember Pob?" and, "how can you not remember Pob?!"

We also dive into the Welsh myth of Lludd and Llefelys and learn that London was founded by a Welshman. Who knew?

The Welsh knew.

The 16th century was a dangerous place, kids. Con artists, knaves and robbers roamed the land, causing mischief. If the pamphlets Alasdair has uncovered are to be believed, there was a vast underground crime network with its own secret language. It was a lot a lot like the John Wick franchise. And, like the John Wick franchise, it's a load of old nonsense.

Still, bit of fun, innit?

Alasdair takes a deep dive into an epic, extraordinary year!

1816 was a real shocker, by all accounts. The world seemed to have been turned upside down. Holidays were ruined. Worst of all, people moped around indoors writing POETRY.

Maybe life two centuries ago wasn't so different after all... Hmmm?

(Puts on sunglasses.)

(Takes sunglasses off because of the lack of summer.)

FLORIDA MAN RECORDS PODCAST! The Loremen are joined by indie game auteur Francisco González - a genuine American! He gives us the lowdown on Florida's creepiest life-size, melty-faced, doll-boy, Robert the Doll.

This bumper episode also investigates Florida's OTHER claim to paranormal fame: the Skunk Ape of the everglades. (He's basically a stinky bigfoot.) Plus, if you enjoyed the world's oldest paperboy in last week's episode, you'll go crazy for America's smallest post office. (It's impractically small!)

Award-winning comedian Harriet Braine steps up to the Loremen plate and tries to convince us that Surbiton is an interesting place, actually. We meet modern folk legends in the form of a goat-headed cheesemaker, a dead giant and the world's oldest paper boy. However, we do end up talking about the train station a lot. Such is the overwhelming blandness of Surbiton: "The city suburb that always sleeps".

  • Who petrified the Keynsham snakes?
  • Is it possible to fly from Bath to London, Icarus-style?

The Loremen ride again. Again!

Series 3 kicks off with a bang as Pierre Novellie joins the Loremen to impart his Manx wisdom. Pierre's home, the Isle of Man, once played host to Gef the Talking Mongoose. In the 1930s, Gef was an infamous mischief-maker and an extremely cocky mammal. His tale is as perplexing as Manx cats' tails are non-existent, and Alasdair and James are left bamboozled by what must be the Irish sea's most masculine island*.

*Second only to Manly Beach, Australia, in the macho location stakes.

In this final episode of series two we come bang up to date (to the 1970s) with a North Eastern tale of Celtic effigies. Then we narrowly avoid Royal slander to chat about the incomparably named "Mickleton Hooter".

In a way, this episode ties a lot of threads together - Parcy Reed (S1 E1) gets a shout out, the Screetonizer (S2 E6) shows up again, there's a Dun Cow (S1 E6) and even the Mickleton Hooter lurks in the shadow of Meon Hill (S2 E7). We are terribly sorry there is no mention of Chekhov's Gun in this episode. It's like we referred to it early on in the series but then it never paid off. Sorry Chekhov.
