Ever wondered how deeply childhood trauma and addiction are intertwined? Join me on this episode of the Surviving Trauma Stories of Hope podcast, where we welcome Jason Shears, an inspiring certified psychotherapist and transformative coach from Manchester, UK. Jason's story is a harrowing yet hopeful journey, from his early diagnosis and forced medication for depression, leading to heroin addiction at the tender age of 13, and imprisonment by 20. Despite achieving sobriety through a 12-step program, his struggle didn't end there. Seven years ago, Jason had a transformative awakening that changed his approach to helping others, shifting the perspective that people are not broken and that lasting change can indeed be simple.

Our conversation digs into various forms of addiction—substance abuse, gambling, and even retail therapy—revealing how these behaviors often serve as masks for deeper, unresolved issues. We delve into the complex relationship between addiction, trauma, and the unconscious mind, drawing on profound insights from experts like Gabor Maté and Carl Jung. Jason shares how unaddressed childhood trauma and negative core beliefs can persist into adulthood, influencing behaviors and life outcomes. The episode underscores the importance of introspection and self-awareness in overcoming these deep-seated issues, with Jason illustrating his journey from being a service user to a professional psychotherapist.

In our discussion on awakening, trauma, and self-discovery, Jason reflects on a spiritual awakening that altered his understanding of life and trauma. We explore the nuanced interplay between non-dual spiritual understanding and conditioned human responses, and the crucial role that transformative conversations and spiritual insights play in addiction recovery. Highlighting techniques like somatic experiencing and compassionate inquiry, Jason emphasizes the need to address root causes rather than just symptoms of addiction. This episode offers a beacon of hope and practical guidance for anyone grappling with addiction and trauma, proving that healing and transformation are truly within reach.

Struggling with anxiety, depression, or an eating disorder can feel like a relentless battle. However, Lori Hammer, a neuro-nutrition expert and functional nutritional therapist, is proof that there's hope. In our latest episode, she shares her intimate narrative of triumphing over these challenges and a rare cancer diagnosis. Her journey isn't just a personal victory; it's the foundation of her mission to empower women through her podcast, "Take Back my Brain," and her own practice, where she uses targeted amino acid therapy and brain detox to bring about monumental changes in health and wellness.

We've all heard about the importance of nutrition, but Lori takes it a step further by highlighting the intricate relationship between our diet and our brain chemistry. Discover how simple changes in what we eat can affect everything from mood swings to energy levels. Lori's approach is not just about eating right; it's about understanding how the very building blocks of our brain function, like serotonin, are affected by our nutritional intake. She also shares her Calm Mom Method and introduces a group program designed to offer personalized solutions for brain balance, all within a nurturing community environment.

Perhaps most inspiring are the stories Lori brings to life — tales of women and their partners who've experienced profound transformations through nutritional interventions. These anecdotes offer a fresh perspective on women's health, particularly during the challenging phases of perimenopause and menopause. They serve as a powerful reminder that a decline in vitality isn't inevitable with age and that, with the right support, we can all reclaim our zest for life. So join us as we celebrate the resilience of the human spirit and the extraordinary power of a balanced and holistic approach to health.

Forcelli found himself in a fight for his life, both physically and mentally. Join me as I, Marlene McConnell sit down with Peter to unpack his harrowing experiences from the front lines of law enforcement, including his vivid survival story from September 11th and the unspoken mental health battles that followed. The scars of trauma often lie hidden beneath the surface, but as Peter shares, conquering the nightmares of PTSD begins with breaking the silence. Mike Coy grew up on the baseball field. From his early days of playing in Beaumont, Texas, to a long history of coaching, he has always been drawn back to the game. His dad was an umpire and coach that helped every kid in town with their game. Baseball is in his blood. And with good reason — his teams are winners!

Fueled by his father's poignant words, "make a difference," Mike transformed a harrowing battle with cancer into an incredible journey of triumph. As a sought-after keynote speaker and best-selling author of "I Chose…Live: There’s No Cheating Cancer, And We All Have a Choice To Make," a testament to overcoming adversity and making life-changing choices.

In this week's episode, I am delighted to welcome Tate Barley to the podcast who joins me from North Carolina, United States.

Tate carried the burden of shame for years, stemming from poverty, addiction, and the struggle of being a closeted gay man. Through Alcoholics Anonymous, he found sobriety and now seeks to inspire others by sharing his transformative journey. His memoir, unveils his troubled relationship with his father and his path to overcoming shame and a scarcity mindset. Tate reflects on his challenging childhood from rural North Carolina to poverty in Central Florida, and their move to 1970s Houston. He details his battle with repressed sexuality and escalating drinking, leading to rock bottom. Tate's story resonates as he pursues self-acceptance and inner peace. A Houston-based attorney, speaker, author, and educator, Tate lives with his husband, Anson, and their dog, Emerson.

Tate Barkley grew up in the small towns of North Carolina, where money was tight, dreams seldom came true, and family secrets were kept hidden. His Grandmother’s house was a sanctuary where he felt loved—and her big Sunday dinners nourished his stomach and his soul. After his parents divorced, he discovered his mother’s new boyfriend, and eventual husband, was his biological father— a charming dreamer who would disappear for months at a time, leaving his family to fend for themselves. As a teen, Tate began drinking. His father was a heavy drinker, and Tate was always looking for ways to connect with him, for a way to hold on to the moment before he slipped away again. Drinking gave Tate a sense of calm, and it numbed him from the love he was missing in his life. After years of drinking, losing his law practice, and hitting rock bottom he realized he either needed to take responsibility and change—or he’d end up dead.

This is a Southern boy’s story of surviving in a good ole boys’ world. Tate fought his way back, ended a life built on lies, and forged a path to accept his true self—with or without his father’s love.

It has been my pleasure to have Tate join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

I am excited to welcome Heulwen Marina Carrier to the podcast who joins me from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Marina lived through early trauma as an illegitimate unwanted child, born as a girl, then sexually abused by her step-father up to the age of 9 when she was left as dead. She was baptized as a baby, so despite her suffering, she passed to Grammar School and through God’s provision was enabled to pass sufficient exams at 16, then at 18, to train as a teacher.

Her career was led by Providential care and as she asked questions, and sought answers through courses, she grew in wisdom and experience of enabling learning even with those deemed to have learning difficulties.

Most of her shifts of direction followed necessity, or invitations – such as the one that offered her a 3-year Student-ship to do a Ph.D. when she was married and had an adopted child!!!

She taught all ages and abilities in her years in education and finished her work as Acting Head of Department of In-Service Education of Teachers. She chose to step sideways into support of students but then had to recognize her mental exhaustion – and her own needs.

She had lived in denial of her human needs for years – especially since her husband’s betrayal. And now in despair, she heard her name when crying on the bed. And she was given early retirement.

So for 30 years after God called her back to the Church, she was led through ‘the dark night of the soul’, finding the mystery of the Inner World – and what it means to live in ‘Spirit and in Truth’. She learned the wonder of humility and the mystery of giving all her burdens to Christ…. Yet living for Him and by Him. Gradually her suffering of her early years in human terms became revealed and unraveled as she needed to embrace her faith and allow change in her heart and live for Love.

With a greater understanding of the effects of trauma and PTSD, healing in faith brought compassion and will to bless and serve others who bore heavy burdens of lovelessness and shame.

It has been my pleasure to have Marina join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey.

In this week's episode, I am delighted to welcome Avgi Sakatopoulou and Ann Pelligrini to the podcast.

Avgi and Ann, psychoanalysts and professors at NYU, tackle one of the most hot-button cultural/health issues raging in the United States of America—how one forms their gender identity—in a new book, GENDER WITHOUT IDENTITY.

The award-winning psychoanalysts challenge the argument widely embraced by rights activists and members of the LGBTQ+ community that gender identity is innate and immutable. Dismissing the notion of core gender identity as simplistic, problematic, and potentially harmful to LGBTQ+ people, the authors propose instead that gender is something we all acquire—through our ongoing development, family history, and life experiences, which sometimes include trauma.

AVGI SAKETOPOULOU (she/her)trained as clinical psychologist in New York after emigrating from Greece and Cyprus, and subsequently completed training as a psychoanalyst at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, where she currently teaches. She also serves on the faculty of the William Alanson White Institute, the Stephen Mitchell Relational Center, and the National Institute for Psychotherapies, where she offers courses on psychosexuality and gender. Her interview on psychoanalysis is on the collection of the Freud Museum in Vienna and she is the 2022 recipient of the Scholarship Award from the American Psychological Association’s Division of Psychoanalysis. Dr. Saketopoulou is also the author of Sexuality Beyond Consent: Risk, Race, Traumatophilia (NYU Press, 2023).

ANN PELLEGRINI (they/them; she/her) is Professor of Performance Studies & Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University, teaching classes on queer theory and psychoanalysis, among other topics, as well as a psychoanalyst in private practice. They are the author/co-author of three previous books, including “You Can Tell Just by Looking” and 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People, co-authored with Michael Bronski and Michael Amico (Beacon Press, 2013), which was a finalist for the 2014 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT Non-Fiction. Dr. Pellegrini has also co-edited two anthologies and is founding co-editor of the “Sexual Cultures” series at NYU Press.

It has been my honor and pleasure to have Avgi and Ann join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

Sarah Westbrook, MS, LPC, NCC, is the founder of Westbrook Counseling Services and Daisy Girl Communications. As a trauma survivor herself, she understands the work that goes into healing. She helps her clients work through their pain to achieve lasting results, laughing along the way to becoming their most authentic selves.

With a master of science in mental health counseling from Walden University and focused continued education in Trauma Informed Therapy, The Gottman Method, DBT, and CBT, she provides individual therapy, couples and family counseling, and weekend psychoeducational training courses.

This week, I am delighted to welcome Richard Brockman, MD to the podcast who joins me from Columbia University, United States.

An intertwined tale of a boy’s world shattered by suicide and a man’s story rewritten by neuroscience.

Richard Brockman, MD, is a clinical professor in the department of psychiatry at Columbia University and a visiting professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Namibia. He has been honored with the Nancy C.A. Roeske Award for medical student education by the American Psychiatric Association and with the Victor J. Teichner Visiting Scholar Award from the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry for his teaching. Also a playwright, his shows have been produced both off-Broadway and on international stages.

When Brockman found his mother’s body, the simple narrative of his childhood ended. Life After Death tells the story of a boy who died and of a man who survived when the boy and the man are one and the same. It tells a very personal—yet tragically common—story of irredeemable loss. It tells the story of story itself. How story forms. How it grows. How it changes. How it can be broken. And finally, how sometimes it can be repaired.

Now an expert in genetics, epigenetics, and the biology of attachment, Brockman chronicles his evolution from a child overwhelmed by trauma to a man who has struggled to reclaim his past. He lays bare the core of one who is both victim and healer. By weaving together childhood despair and clinical knowledge, Brockman shows how the shattered pieces of the self—though never the same and not without scars—can sometimes be put back together again.

It has been my pleasure to have Richard join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey.

In this week's episode, I am delighted to welcome fellow survivor and mental health advocate Madeline Popelka to the podcast who joins me from the Bay Area in California, United States.

Madeline, is a writer, trauma survivor, and mental health, and LGBTQ+ advocate. Born and raised in the Bay Area, she grew up in an Asian American household where mental health was never discussed. As a daughter of a refugee, intergenerational trauma runs through her family, and she struggled with her mental health her entire life. She thought that she was broken and damaged beyond repair, and she suffered in isolation. In her twenties, she started to experience PTSD symptoms and she didn’t know the first step in getting help.

Nobody taught her how to heal, and she knew she wasn’t alone. As she began learning life lessons along my healing journey, she felt the urge to share her insights so other sufferers wouldn’t feel so isolated. In February 2020, she created a space for other trauma survivors, @HealingFromPTSD, which quickly became the largest trauma healing community on Instagram.

Through healing, Madeline discovered and reconnected with parts of herself, and she cultivated a sense of internal peace and freedom that she never experienced before. Now, she is on a mission to help others do the same.

Her first book, You’re Going to Be Okay, was released in September 2022.

It has been my pleasure to have Madeline join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

In this week's episode, I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Eugene Lipov and Jamie Mustard to the podcast.

Dr. Lipov is a complex anesthesiologist called the "Einstein of modern anesthesiology."

President Obama endorsed his discovery and innovation, the Dual Sympathetic Reset (DSR), in 2010. His research has an 85-90% success rate in reducing the effects of trauma.

Jamie Mustard is an artist, multimedia consultant, and Iconist. His passion is to teach the science and "art of obviousness" and the economics of attention, helping professionals, change agents, artists, and businesses confidently and at will make their messages, brands, and ideas stand out to their desired audiences.

Working for some of the biggest brands in the world, including Nike, Adidas, Intel, and Cisco, Jamie believes that art is a way to amplify and accelerate all social change.

In their recently released publication, The Invisible Machine outlines how the root of trauma can be traced toa single piece of human hardware: the stellate ganglion and how the pioneering procedure of DSR appears to treat injury to the stellate ganglion, relieving even the worst symptoms of PTSI—irritability, hypervigilance, insomnia, and more—in a 15-minute treatment.

Weaving hard science with moving human stories, The Invisible Machine reveals a stark new understanding of human pain and how this groundbreaking treatment was developed. It also tells the incredible story of the unlikely team, including the doctor, an artist, Special Forces leadership, and a sheriff, who work together to change our understanding of post-traumatic stress and why it matters to society.

Coming out of a global pandemic, we are emerging from one of the most traumatic times in recent history. This surprising new treatment could have profound implications for medicine, mental health, and society at large. The implications for a better, pain-free world are astounding—and that world could be nearer than we think.

It has been my pleasure to have Dr Eugene Lipov and Jamie Mustard join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. A special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey.

In this week's episode, I am thrilled to welcome the very astute Dr. Lisa Smith to the podcast, where she joins me from her office in Fort Lauderdale, United States.

Dr. Lisa is an author, advocate, and professor who provides an honest perspective about solutions for mental health issues regarding the sexual assault and rape of children and teens, which is rarely addressed. She is a psychology, criminal justice, and human services professor with over 20 years of experience as a counselor, hypnotherapist, and advocate for the masses suffering from trauma and abuse.

Dr. Lisa Smith is also the founder of Right2Consent.com, a sex crime reporting site. Her mission is to raise awareness, help prevent, and reduce sexual victimization (1:5 are targeted online, 1:4 girls, 1:6 boys under 18 are groomed) in America. She questions why we blame and shame vulnerable groups when they tell their stories about sexual victimization. Many are ill-prepared to fend off a sex offender when approached and don't often report the crime to parents or law enforcement. More important, these vulnerable children and teens grow up and become adults with distorted sexual identities.

Most children, teens, and young adults may not know how to deter a sex offender. To help, she writes books that teach students about sexual violence. I write children's books to teach parents and children about the grooming process, give deterrence tips, and help them identify the signs of sexual violence. With her books, children are taught to be superheroes that learn to help each other bring an undetected sex offender into the light.

It has been my pleasure to have Dr. Lisa join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

In this week's episode, I am thrilled to welcome to the podcast, the lovely Dr. Avgi Saketopoulou, PsyD, a Psychoanalyst, from her home in New York.

NYU's Avgi Saketopoulou explores some riveting questions in her new book, Sexuality Beyond Consent. Rather than buy into the notion that trauma can be cured, she reroutes our attention to what traumatized subjects do with their pain. Concerned with forms of sexuality that lay beyond consent, Avgi discusses why such sexuality may be worth risking and explains how risk can become a way of soliciting the future.

She argues that those who surrender to the fact that their pain cannot be eliminated can sometimes do things with trauma. Central to the transformational possibilities of trauma is a queer form of consent, limit consent, that is not about guarding the self but about risking experience.

The erotics of racism offer a paradigmatic example of how what is proximal to a violation may become an unexpected site of flourishing. The book concludes by theorizing currents of sadism that, when pursued ethically, can animate unique forms of interpersonal and social care.

It has been my pleasure to have Avgi join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

In this week's episode, I am excited to welcome the all-inspiring Dr. Reshie Joseph MB chB MSc from his practice in Singapore.

Dr. Reshie started a professional career as a Doctor, having obtained my medical degree (MBBS) from the University of Sheffield in the UK. He had a great future ahead until unresolved childhood trauma caught up with him. To cut a long story, it led to a nine-year descent that ended with homelessness, sleeping in a bus shelter, and hopelessly addicted to heroin and crack cocaine. He has been in recovery since 2011.

He since left medical practice, fully retrained as a clinical psychologist with an MSc from Kings College London in Psychology and the Neuroscience of Mental Health, and now practice exclusively as a psychological professional who specializes in the treatment of PTSD, Complex Psychological Trauma, Addictions and other Disorders of Extreme Stress Not Otherwise Specified (DESNOS). His experience in addiction and psychological trauma also extends to teaching and lecturing on addiction medicine and trauma-related subjects.

He recently wrote and published a book called "A beginner's guide to Trauma." It starts with the basics, what trauma is, how one gets it, how can one tell if you have it, etc., and spans as much of the subject ending by talking about trauma at the societal level. He does not shy away from controversial topics and addresses the fact that "Big Pharma is not the cause of the opioid epidemic" in a chapter in his book.

Dr. Reshie weaves the neuroscience with stories of his actual patients to back up every point he makes. He also shares his recovery journey in the book.

This episode discusses Dr. Reshie's recovery journey, attachment trauma, Big Pharma and the opioid pandemic, and much more.

It has been my pleasure to have Dr. Reshie join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

In this week's episode, I am thrilled to welcome the incredibly knowledgeable and HRV expert, Matt Bennett to the podcast.

Matthew Bennett, MBA, MA, has a master’s degree in psychology and a master's in business administration. Matt successfully combines his academic pursuits as a researcher, blogger, podcaster on the Heart Rate Variability Podcast, Trauma-Informed Lens Podcast and published author of articles and the books Heart Rate Variability: The Future of Trauma-Informed Care, The Heart(beat) of Business, Connecting Paradigms: A trauma-informed and neurobiological framework for Motivational Interviewing Implementation, Talking about Trauma & Change, and Trauma-Sensitive Early Education. Matt is a popular speaker on the topics of mental health, workforce resiliency, leadership, and trauma.

Recently, Matt has utilized his vast knowledge on resiliency and trauma to found Optimal HRV. Optimal HRV is an app that provides a way to quantitatively measure Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV provides a research-backed method for measuring the health of a person’s nervous system and is an indicator of overall physical, mental, and social health. Using the Biofeedback from this data collection, you can change your health with a mindfulness response, combating stressors and other stimuli. Now a simple smartphone application takes the data from the monitors, applies the algorithms, and provides users accurate data on their social, emotional, mental, and medical health. HRV becomes a practical and powerful tool that, with proper implementation, helps change lives.

In this week's episode, I reflect on 2022.

I’m sharing some questions I like to reflect on as the year comes to a close:

✨ Change: What changed about me this year?

✨Growth: What did I accomplish that I didn’t think was possible?

✨Self love: How did I take care of myself?

✨Acceptance: What disappointed me this year?

Lessons Learned

✨ Not everybody deserves space in your life or your mind

✨It’s okay to veer off your plan and take a detour

✨Learn to recognize obstacles as opportunities. Don’t focus on closed doors.

✨Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

✨Attracting prosperity into my life is not about money but a state of mind.

✨Life can happen unexpectedly.

Thank you to all my podcast guests for sharing with us and inspiring the audience. Yu are phenomenal. Keep shining your light.

Lea is a process-oriented psychotherapist, ex-pat coach, facilitator, trainer, blogger, and the Executive Director at Act for Change. As a parent, Lea was inspired by those who acted to save a life at a moment of violent trauma and dispossession during the Holocaust. Act for Change was born out of a leap of imagination that each of us can connect, share and extend the possibility of empathy. Her mission is to stop exclusion from escalating into violence. Today, I am delighted to welcome my incredible guest and friend Dorsey Ross to the podcast.

Dorsey was born on January 16th, 1977, with a congenital disability known as Apert’s Syndrome. When Dorsey was born, his forehead was pushed outward, his nose and mouth were pushed inward, and his fingers and toes were fused, meaning he had no individual movement of them. Doctor’s gave Dorsey’s parents no hope for his survival and advised them to put him into an institution. His parents both knew and trusted in God, and they believed that God would do great things in Dorsey’s life. Throughout his life, Dorsey has had to overcome a lot of obstacles, and trials, being bullied, called names like monster and freak, and undergone multiple operations.

Teachers told Dorsey he would not make it in college, and with all odds against him, he entered Queens Borough Community College. After four years there, and after attaining an associate degree, he entered the University of Valley Forge. After years of hard work and perseverance, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Youth Ministry. His life saying is, “can’t is not in my vocabulary” because, for most of his life, he has never used the word can’t. He believes that with God, all things are possible and that he can do all things through Christ who gives him strength. It’s with God’s help he is overcoming life’s obstacles.

In this podcast conversation, we talk about his journey to overcome and triumph. Dorsey inspires to never give up, but to keep going.

It has been my pleasure to have Dorsey join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

Today, I am thrilled to welcome the all-inspiring David Richman to the podcast.

David did something incredible that can inspire us all. After losing his sister to brain cancer, David has organized a yearly fundraiser in her memory, the most recent being the impetus for his newly released book, Cycle of Lives – 15 People's Stories, 5,000 Miles, and a Journey Through the Emotional Chaos of Cancer.

It's incredible how he pulled it all together in his book, where the stories are interwoven amongst the narrative of David's solo 5,000-mile bike ride to meet the book participants. He shares some of the interconnected stories of people overcoming trauma. David also shares what motivated him to deeply explore emotional journeys with cancer and the various traumas in their lives that affected their experience.

In this podcast conversation, we talk about his unique fundraiser in his sister's memory and how to have a difficult conversation after trauma, lessons learned from sibling death, how we can find hope in our challenges, and his newly released book, Cycle of Lives.

David generously donates 100% of the book's net proceeds to various cancer-related charities picked by the book participants or their survivors. Cancer and other diseases come with so much physical impact. I love seeing how David was able to create a safe space to talk about the challenging emotions that come with it.

It has been my pleasure to have David join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode.

I am excited to be joined on the podcast by the very lovely Destiny Rael and our little furry surprise guest, Mila! 🐾

Destiny lives in Los Angeles, California. She is a Certified Transformational Life and Loss Coach and a Grief Support Leader. She has been through major changes, endings, transitions, challenges, struggles, loss and all this led her to experience her soul awakening. Now she navigates life from an awakened state and she has grown exponentially, inside out, found purpose in her pain and has transformed and rebuilt her own life! She also served as an Advocate, Speaker, Mentor and Certified Trained Crisis Counselor for organizations where she uses her story to bring awareness, education and to empower other survivors.

In this episode Destiny and I talk about loss, grief, career, spiritual awakenings, and creative healing but most importantly we talk about her late brother, Joseph who passed away in 2011 and the devastating impact that his passing had on her.

Her brother was a singer and was musically known as Joseph Tobin. He has three full albums: THE ROGUE COLLECTIVE, JOSEPH TOBIN AND RIDE WITH ME. I took the opportunity to listen to his music and I was touched so deeply. He has a rawness and authenticity that he brings to his music. When he sings, you feel. If you don’t believe me, feel free to listen to all the songs as much as you like! Honestly, I recommend you purchase any of his albums or separate tracks on his memorial page linked below.

Destiny is lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed having her on the podcast. I hope you will enjoy the episode.

I am thrilled to be joined on the podcast by the inspirational 29-year-old, Harriet Barnsley.

Harriet lives in Birmingham, UK with the love of her life and their cat, Fred. She studied at the University of Reading where she graduated with a degree in Philosophy. She loves fitness and her favorite food is dark chocolate!

Harriet’s story starts in 2014 when she had just awoken from a six-week coma following a devastating incident. It happened the day after her last ever exam at Reading University, in May 2014.

She had come home to Birmingham for a hen party, and on that sunny Saturday evening, she was traveling into the city center with her childhood friend Beccy, looking forward to a fun time catching up with old friends.

They stood waiting for the bus when two cars sped round the corner – one lost control and smashed into them.

The drivers were racing each other at more than 100mph. They were both drunk. When the car struck, the pair were thrown meters into the air. Harriet sustained a traumatic brain injury and was left with life-changing injuries. Beccy was killed instantly.

In this episode, Harriet and I talk about her recovery, loss, grief, living with disability, mental illness, writing a memoir, road traffic safety activism and so much more.

She is a woman who has lived two lives in one lifetime. The first part was a life of childhood abuse and trauma which grew into the full-blown disease of alcoholism. Her life was out of control and she was circling the drain.

She created a life of truth and authenticity. Her story is about removing the expectations and the dogma of society and instead being guided by love and empathy.

Jewels include BDSM as a method of sexual healing. Some may call her life risky, unethical, and totally against the norm. But she sees it otherwise. Jewels is in a very loving open-minded marriage, she is sexually liberated because of her childhood trauma, and she placed 3rd at the national level at NPC North American Championships!

In this episode, Jewels and I chat about overall healing, sobriety, BDSM as a method of sexual healing, being sexually liberated and Jewels shares her reflections and life lessons that lead to empowerment! This is a powerful and inspirational story that you don't want to miss.

I am thrilled to be joined on the podcast by the lovely Susan Angel Miller from her home in Milwaukee.

Following the death of Susan’s teenage daughter, Laura and her own health crisis, she craved a roadmap to help her navigate a world that she no longer recognized. Sharing her story with friends and then writing her memoir allowed her to craft a narrative she could live with. She eventually gave herself permission to grieve, survive, and even thrive.

Susan believes in our human capacity to move forward “in spite of” life’s tragic events and losses. She eventually came to a place where She could give herself permission to move forward — to grieve, survive, and even thrive — without guilt.

Her goal is to encourage those facing a loss to recognize and nurture the emotional growth that emerges through the struggle.

In this episode, we explore Susan’s trauma recovery journey and tackle topics like grief, loss, post-traumatic growth following trauma, organ donation, and so much more.

The message in this episode is important to me because I had the privilege of guidance and support following my traumatic experiences. My family and friends were incredible, and they held space for me to heal and they gave me the tools needed. For so many, that is not the case. I feel like I can’t know all that I know and keep it to myself. If I do that, I feel like I am not fulfilling part of my divine purpose. I decided to pour it all into this book and to share it with the world. My hope is that this will help many to find perspective, hope, courage, and love through my words on the pages. My ask is that the listeners support my campaign to help me share this gift with the world.

Would you please help me to share my story through supporting the pre-sale campaign for my upcoming book, Trauma Propels: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities? Expected publication May 2022.

I am privileged to be joined by the inspirational author Gerard Long on the podcast this week.

Gerard Long is an author and pastor, who had a 30-year-year career in banking, was the National Director of Alpha USA for seven years and is the Founder and President of a non-profit corporation, Awakening to God Ministries. In the first week of its release, his book Living Hope was Amazon’s #1 New Release and #1 Bestseller. Gerard has an exciting story to share with us. In 2019, Gerard died from a cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead not once but twice in 30 minutes. Asking the question, “Why am I still here” he sensed a divine calling to write his latest book, Living Hope, to share three epiphanies that helped him journey through a season of catastrophic suffering.

In this episode, we will tackle topics like how to journey through suffering, how to find God’s plan/purpose for your life, how to triumph in the fight of faith, and how to succeed in your marriage when all seems lost.

Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. Stay tuned and keep listening.

This week I am excited to be joined by Andrea Medina all the way from California.

In the episode, Andrea and I chat about trauma, recovery and the concept of interconnected healing. She starts out by sharing her story and her journey of healing and recovery from verbal and emotional abuse. Andrea also gives us an insight into her upcoming book titled The Energized Self: Explorations of Inner Peace to Foster Self-Awareness, Compassion & Service. The book is centered on how interviewing strangers about their ways of overcoming traumatic experiences in their lives energized her to do the inner work needed to move forward from her own trauma. In this book, she presents a concept she likes to call "interconnected healing" or healing through the oneness that we recognize in our stories and those of others, regardless of the background.

Andrea currently teaches Junior High English through Teach For America in Mississippi. She have a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Literature from Claremont McKenna College. She is Mexican American, a language enthusiast, meditation and journaling practitioner, a writer, and a colossal rap fanatic. Her newest project is a book titled, The Energized Self: Explorations of Inner Peace to Foster Self-Awareness, Compassion & Service, which will be coming out in the Winter of 2021.

I enjoyed the conversation with Andrea, and it was a pleasure to have her join me on the podcast.

Today, I welcome Jared Altic to the podcast, and he joins me from his hometown of Kansas City, Kansas.

Jared is a husband, father of five, Bible teacher, Police Chaplain, and podcaster. He has 25 years of experience serving and counseling military and law enforcement families. In addition, he works as a minister and volunteers his time as a police chaplain at the local police department. He is a man of God, and he has dedicated his life so selflessly to stand in service of others. He is an inspiration to so many.

In this episode, I ask the question, “what is a police chaplain?” First, Jared explains that a chaplain is a priest or a pastor attached to an organization such as a hospital or the police department. Then, Jared provides the listeners with a front-row seat to a day in the life of a police chaplain. He explains that a chaplain gets called out to unattended deaths, which means homicides, suicides, accidents, and natural deaths without doctor or hospice care. A chaplain also makes death notifications, and a chaplain builds relationships with the officers by being present as they serve their community.

Jared is authoritative yet kind, focused, compassionate, grounded, helpful, and easy to talk to. It was a pleasure to have him join me on the podcast. This episode was insightful and opened a whole new world of knowledge for me. So get ready because this episode is a must-listen.

Enjoy, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. Stay tuned and keep listening.

In this week's episode, I welcome Jennifer Rose Asher to the podcast. She joins me from her home in Dallas, Texas.

In the episode, Jennifer shares the story of how she became a mother. She details everything from her decision to have a child through two miscarriages and a whirlwind trip to Vietnam to find and adopt her daughter. Along the way, Jennifer and her husband tried multiple approaches looking for their child and, in the end, would never have predicted where they would find her.

Jennifer has just authored a book on her journey of becoming a mom called "Journey to My Daughter." Her book will be released in December 2021. I have been privileged to have a peek and highly recommend this book as a definite must-read. Jennifer's book started as a memoir detailing her journey to her daughter, but it is so much more than that. For families or people who are considering adoption, this book is for you. Through Jennifer's story, you will find the confidence to know that your child is out there regardless of any difficulties you may be experiencing today. So keep following the signs and be flexible in your thinking to navigate the journey.

I have known Jennifer for a short time, but she struck me as selfless, loving, passionate, supportive, creative, intelligent, and firm. I enjoyed our conversation, and it was a pleasure to have her join me on the podcast.

Enjoy the episode, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. Stay tuned and keep listening.

In this special episode, I welcome Eric “Protein” Moseley to the podcast. He joins me from his home town of Austin, Texas.

Eric, is a social impact documentary filmmaker/homeless advocate, director, author and business man who grew up in Detroit Michigan, dropped out of school, became involved with gangs, substance abuse, and eventually became homeless. Eric navigated the streets for many years across the US while raising his daughter Erica on the streets. Navigating the streets allowed for him to see firsthand what it was like living on the streets of Los Angeles. After reaching rock bottom, Eric found the help needed to turn his life around and he used his experiences to become a motivation for others.

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, Eric has been recognized as becoming the first to educate the homeless about Covid-19 and turned it into a popular documentary called “The Homeless Coronavirus Outreach” which has made an impact in different regions of the world. His primary mission was to inform the destitute individuals about the virus and to distribute pandemic care packages, however his adult daughter Erica Moseley joined him and she conducted most of the interviews in the film, which he shot mainly in San Francisco and Los Angeles on an iPhone over four days.

As they recorded footage of the various encounters, the social impact documentarian knew that he had to tell the stories of homeless people in the early days of the pandemic and bring it to the world. The documentary, which is also available on YouTube, has aired in six cities and several countries, including Cape Town, South Africa.

As an advocate for the homeless, Eric has established an outreach training and community support programme. Through the “Each one teach one” infrastructure he will work closely with organisations to bridge the gap between the homeless and the modern day society.

Eric is charming, passionate about his purpose and easy to talk to. It was a pleasure to have him join me on the podcast. His story will leave you feeling inspired and educated. Get ready because this episode is a must listen.

Enjoy, and a special thank you to my listeners for joining me on this journey. Stay tuned and keep listening.

On the podcast Alexis shares her story, toolbox and recovery journey with us. In this episode, I welcome Sam "The Miracle Man" Shelly to the podcast. He joins me from New York. Sam helps the burnt-out, bottomed-out soul find relief from physical and mental suffering through ditching limiting beliefs and modern medicine myths, so they can awaken to their inner wisdom, alternative ways of healing, self-empowerment, and live a pain-free, healthy, and joyful life.

Sam's story started at the age of six when he was run over by a truck, and the accident left him seriously injured. Sam would heal and recuperate in the years that followed, but the damage caused by his injuries would lead to more severe ailments. Sam would eventually be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and migraines. In addition, his immune system was attacking his brain and spinal cord. He was told he might never walk again. His health deteriorated, and some days he couldn't speak to people without slurring his speech. Plus, living with a mental illness for most of his life wasn't easy. It left him feeling like the walls were closing in, and he had nowhere to go. Sam lived in pain and suffering for nearly 40 years, and today, he is free from medicine, doctors, and his cane!

Sam's story is multifaceted and inspiring. He will share his journey of overcoming illness, a near-death experience, mystical stories, ghost stories, and lots more. Sam now helps his clients in his practice to create miracles by clearing head trash! He is also an author and has written two books; he posts daily YouTube videos and has two weekly live shows.

Sam is fun and easy to talk to. It was a pleasure to chat with him on my podcast. If you have ever faced adversity in your life and need some inspiration, then this episode is for you.

In this episode, I welcome Lois Hollis to the podcast. Lois is an educator, counsellor and filmmaker. Lois Hollis was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1943. She started her career by volunteering as a nurse’s aide at age 12. She earned her RN from St. Joseph Hospital and achieved her BSN from the University of Pennsylvania. For thirty years, she gained experience as a nurse in open-heart surgery, neurosurgery, gastroenterology, and nephrology. However, she spent most of her career in nephrology, the treatment of kidney disorders. She used her talents in research, teaching, and consulting to help establish one of the first kidney hemodialysis units in the United States at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Lois taught hospital staff, physicals, and nurses how to care for hemodialysis patients both in hospital and home.

After seven years of an intense working schedule, Lois needed change. She retired to consulting and eventually married. Although she lost three pregnancies, she gave birth to three girls. She states, “God gave me three beautiful girls.” Despite her many accomplishments, her abusive childhood traumas began to outweigh her vivacious lifestyle. She succumbed to guilt-ridden depression, heart and liver disease, 30 years of migraine headaches, and structural deformities. Her physicians told her that she could not live past 50 years, but she was determined to do so. Lois soon discovered that her emotional and physical health intricately weave themselves to produce health or disease.

Lois moved to Sedona, Arizona where she uncovered shame/guilt secrets, her ability to write Light Language Poetry, and discovered the doctor who helped restore her health. Her desire to understand and heal the body continues at age 77 as a ShameGuilt Educator, Counselor, and now Filmmaker.

Lois is beautiful, intelligent, funny and inspiring. It was a pleasure to talk to her on my podcast and have her share her vast knowledge and experience with us. We can learn to much from her and she has so much to teach us. If you have ever experienced negative emotions, like shame and guilt, or sickness and disease, then this episode is for you.
