Topic: A new online shop, started by a Penny Forward member, creates items that celebrate our disabilities. Some of you may be familiar with Desirée on Tik Tok, YouTube or Instagram as the Nearly Blind Knitter and Stitcher.“In dealing with my own blindness and both of my daughters’ medical complexities, our family learned for us the best way to cope is with a very dark sense of humor, first responders, ED and ICU I’m looking at you when I say dark. We also observed that you can get away with saying very cheeky things on t-shirts that you can’t say to someone’s face, and with our current culture people seem to pay more attention to a t-shirt then what you are telling them. So Flaunt Your Ability was born."Desirée’s goal with these shirts is to be funny while making a point and educating people while not crossing the line into offensive. Guide dogs aren’t for everybody, but for some people, guide dogs can offer more independence and freedom than traveling with a cane. But, if you’re considering having a guide dog, there is some added cost, and some added responsibility. So we invited Jake Koch, from Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Raphael California and Boring Oregon, to come on the show to talk to us about the costs of owning a guide dog, and what it takes to get a guide dog, what happens during class, and what happens after you go home.

Thank you for your patience while Penny Forward Podcast editor Byron Lee took time to grieve the loss of his mother. We'll be returning with new episodes on July26th. Until then, please enjoy this rerelease of our interview with Gina Marie Applebee. Gina has a B.S. in geology, an M.S. in marine geo physics, an EDS in science education, and a Ph.D. in progress in integral and transformational psychology. Gina was a totally blind PH.D. student working as a figure model, with a dream of living independently while being priced out of her home city of Charleston South Carolina. She decided that she was going to build a tiny home to live in independently. Gina completed her tiny home shortly after this interview was originally released. She has now been living in it for over a year and is looking forward to coming back on soon to give us an update on what it's been like.

If the topic of investing seems incredibly daunting, or your first thought upon hearing the word “investing” is, “I could never do that!” You are most definitely not alone. Additionally, while our inclination when our elders tell us things may be to not listen to them, much wisdom and invaluable life lessons can come from age and experience. Les Kriegler is 71 years old. Over his long life, he has enjoyed a successful career in the New York state rehabilitation system, both as a counselor and an administrator, raised two children with his wife Jane, and become a successful investor. We invited Les on because we think he has a lot to teach us about how investing can be a powerful tool to help blind people lead comfortable and care free lives.

For this last episode of 2021, we're sharing a recording of a Zoom call hosted by our friend Mo Carpenter. She runs a Facebook group for blind parents called "Parenting Out Of Sight Kids," and they host a biweekly zoom call discussing topics of interest to blind parents. During last month's call, we had a conversation about staying on budget during the holidays. And it was such an enjoyable conversation that we wanted to share it with you. So, while you are enjoying the holidays with your friends and family, or reaching out to those who may be feeling isolated from their friends and family, we hope you will enjoy this discussion about budgeting during the holidays.

The American Council of the blind and National Federation of the blind both hold national conventions every year in mid summer, and both conventions are a great place to network with other blind people who may have similar interests. They're also a great place to find job, business, and volunteer opportunities. One of the people who found a volunteer opportunity like no other at the ACB national convention is Janet Dickelman. We invited Janet on to tell us about her very interesting life and career, how she ended up becoming ACB’s volunteer convention coordinator, and what happens at convention from the perspective of those who attend and those who work behind the scenes.

Have you ever said, "I just can't eat healthy because it's too expensive"? This is a common belief, so we invited licensed personal trainer and nutrition specialist Marana Vradenberg on to the show to talk about what it means to eat healthy, how we can eat healthy at home or at a restaurant and still maintain a budget, what we might want to do if we're a picky eater, and much, much more.
Marana recommends following the dietary guidelines described at myplate.gov. For more personalized assistance, she can be reached by email at missmarana@gmail.com.

When it comes to saving, investing, and planning for the future, do you ever find yourself wondering whether you should do it yourself or ask someone else for help? It's a difficult decision to make, and we often don't ask someone for help until we've made mistakes that make us feel ashamed and embarrassed about what we've done. To make matters more difficult, we often don't know what type of professional to hire in the first place. We invited Tyler Cook, a certified financial planner with Parable Wealth Partners in Edina Minnesota, on to tell us who a financial planner is, what a financial planner does, where you might find one, when you might choose to hire one, and why a financial planner might be a professional that you'd want to employ to help you grow your wealth and make solid plans to secure your future.
To learn more about the standards governing certified financial planners, or to find a certified financial planner that may be right for you, visit cfp.net or use the Broker Check tool provided by finra.org.

This is a special episode of the Penny Forward podcast prompted by a post to the Penny Forward Facebook group. Kaiti Shelton wondered if we could do an episode on fitness on a budget. We thought that was a great idea, and we decided to collaborate with Greg Linberg of the Eyes Free Sports podcast to pull together a panel of fitness experts and enthusiasts who are all blind to talk about fitness on a budget including exercising at home Vs. at a gym, participating in solo Vs. team sports, and exercising with and without equipment.
Some resources mentioned in the show were: bodybuilding.com, United States Association of Blind Athletes, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Move United, and Achilles International.

If upon hearing the phrase “identity theft,” your first thought is, “Oh, crap!” You are not alone. While the topic of identity theft can evoke feelings of overwhelming dread, there are accessible resources out there if you find yourself a victim of identity theft as well as steps that can be taken to minimize the risk of having your identity stolen. We invited Eva Velasquez, President and CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center, ITRC for short, on to talk to us about identity theft, and explain how the ITRC, through a host of accessible resources, can help us be proactive and responsible about ensuring that our identity is ours and ours alone.

Many blind people wonder if we will ever be able to own our own home, Especially if we’re struggling just to find work and get off of social security benefits. Michael Morris lost a good job when his vision changed and he didn’t know how to access the resources that could’ve helped him learn the skills he needed to keep working. We invited Michael on to tell us how his resilience and faith helped him access the resources he needed to achieve his goal of home ownership and how he paid off his mortgage in just seven short years. Michael used an individual development account, a special bank account that helps people with low incomes to save for their education, a first home, or to start a business. More information about individual development accounts and how they impact Social Security benefits can be found at https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/spotlights/spot-individual-development.htm A full text transcript of this episode can be found at https://pennyforward.com/penny-forward-transcript-s2e6-daring-to-dream-the-impossible-dream/ The Penny Forward podcast is about blind people building bright futures one penny at a time.
