Today Kylie and I talk about our burlesque experiences and how we come alive on stage! We also discuss ways to update our dear old Shakespeare and build the Next Canon! Catch Kylie as Moonlit Marie SOON on a burlesque stage near you!

Kylie is a queer (pansexual, demisexual) visual artist and performer, typically performing burlesque and circus arts. They write short stories and are in the process of starting an online watercolor landscape class through the Sol Acting School out of Albuquerque, New Mexico for their new media department. They were a ticketer and usher for the Seattle Theater Groups for about two years, getting high exposure to theater through work. Kylie graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2019 with a BFA in Graphic Design with a focus on illustration. During their senior year, Kylie took Cherry Manhattan’s Neo-burlesque class and began to explore burlesque that way. They have been a stagehand and worn various hats for several burlesque shows over the past three years.

https://www.instagram.com/kylinarench14/

Mysterious influences from Victorian, gothic, and the fantastic become Moonlit Marie on the stage. This mystical tease offers subtle slyness and organic flow that will take you to your knees. Fiercely fluid, and always flexible, you’ll always hope Moonlit Marie will reveal just one more layer - and wonder who might show up next. With acts reminiscent of vaudeville, saucy sweet stripteases, to high elf fan dances and aerial silk flows, Moonlit Marie is flexible, unpredictable and adventitious.

Today Wilysha and I talk about how New Work totally changed our views as artists. We also talk A LOT about movies and TV in today's episode so if you like Rom-coms, Comedy or Eddie Murphy you will enjoy today's episode!

Wilysha Nicole Walton is a writer, actor, singer, and dancer living in Seattle, Washington. She has trained in various forms of performance such as musical theatre, improv, Shakespeare, clown, and urban dance and has written 2 full-length plays and a number of monologues, short stories, 10 minute and 1 act plays, poems, and group generative work. Since graduating from Cornish College of the Arts in 2019, Wilysha has had the fortune of working with theatre companies such as Book-It Repertory Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and Freehold Theatre and participating in local festivals like 14/48: The World's Quickest Theatre Festival, where she has been both an actor and writer. Though she participates in many forms of theatre, playwriting holds a special place in Wilysha's heart. Since she was young she's always had a larger-than-life imagination and loved to dream of worlds that were vastly different from reality. Couple that with her love for her own culture and others, amplifying Black and non-Black POC voices, and comedy, you get plays that are a whole lot of fun!

Today William and I discuss how important it is for the Book and Music to be cohesive in musical theatre. So Many beautiful shows are tainted by a sketchy book. We also take time to remember that THEATRE IS NOT BROADWAY. It’s like the rectangle and the square thing. Broadway is theater, but theater is not JUST Broadway. Remember that the best performance you may ever see could be just around the corner. No matter where you are. So go out there and see some local theatre!!!

William Douglas Johnson (He/They) has been local to the Seattle area all his life. Graduated in 2020 from Cornish College the Arts, William has worked with Seattle Repertory theater and their Public Works group, Showtunes theater, Sound theater company, Village theater KIDSTAGE, and others. Since this shift to virtual for the pandemic, William has been exploring podcasting, streaming, and film.

Today Anasofia and I discuss how modern canon shows often fall into the same traps as shows from 50 years ago. We need to have more shows depicting diverse human experiences, written and composed by the people they are representing. PERIOD. Anasofia has amazing words on the topic of activism and especially activism in the theatre. Go follow them on instagram @a.gal

Anasofia Gallegos (they/them) is a fat, queer, neurodivergent desert-born actor/activist. Anasofia has worked with Fifth Avenue, Seattle Opera, Village Theatre, Book-It Repertory, and other local seattle theatres as both a teaching artist and performer. "We must be impatient for change. Let us remember that our voice is a precious gift and we must use it."--Claudia Flores

Micaela Gonzales comes from a Panamanian/Mexican family that cherishes the arts. She began her training at age three, thanks to the help and support of her mother, and has dedicated her life to dance ever since. She continues to explore performance in modern, contemporary, jazz, improvisational, and burlesque based movement.

Scarlett Folds -- Miss Folds if you’re nasty -- is THE raunchy red-lipped lady. Scarlett knows love can be tough sometimes. She also knows you like it that way. This rebel will whip you into shape and light a fire inside you that only she can put out.

Today Xandii and I talk about creating and encouraging work done in the last 21 years and letting go of the rest for a bit. We need some fun jukebox musicals to lift our spirits these days. Smiling Laughing and Dancing together once we can all be together again! Cant Wait!

Xandria Easterday Callahan (they/them) was tickled pink to chat with Dani on Next Canon, as a stage manager you may have seen their work, but not them, working with such various theaters such as Village, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Wooden O, Seattle Public Theater and more to come! They are also the production and personal manager for Albatross Theater Lab. When not in the theater, they are an amateur painter, sound designer, and general eccentric artist. You can most often find them talking to their cats in West Seattle. As always, most thanks to their wife Alina. #MaskUp #StaySafe

Today Wiley and I talk about THE END on Phantom of the Opera (on broadway and perhaps in our hearts)… Isn’t it really just a show about a show that a guy writes so he can be the lead in a show and kiss the girl he likes? Kinda. Yeah, I would say so. High Drama over here. In 30 years though Wiley is going to direct a Brechtian Phantom and that sounds like HONESTLY a rip roaring time at the theatre to me.

Wiley Basho Gorn (he/him/his) is a director, dramaturg, text coach, and teaching artist. His work focuses on developing a personal connection to heightened language both on and off the stage. Directing credits include: house of sueños: an audio drama (Seattle Shakespeare Company’s Rough Magic podcast), Twelfth Night, or What You Will (Fern Shakespeare Company, Seattle WA) house of sueños and It Will Be Now (18th⋃, Seattle WA), As You Like It (ACT Theatre, Seattle WA) and The Tempest (Taksu Theatre Co. Brooklyn NY). Dramaturgical credits include: Bring Down The House Pt 1&2, As You Like It, Macbeth, All’s Well That Ends Well (Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Ashland OR), Richard III (Seattle Shakespeare Company and upstart crow collective, Seattle, WA). Wiley is an affiliate artist of upstart crow collective and received his BFA from the School of Drama at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. wileybashogorn.com

Today Gloria and I talked about JAZZ BABY! Well, honestly we talked a lot about how misogynistic shows and people are the worst. We also talked about some wonderful musicals that are thoughtfully written and deserve to be seen by EVERYONE! Woot woot!

Gloria Lee Alcalá

(They/Them)

Gloria Lee Alcalá (BFA - Theatre/Emphasis in Musical Theatre - Cornish College of the Arts) is an actor/writer/musician based in Seattle, WA, who is currently on a pandemic-induced sabbatical in northern Arizona. Presently playing their mother’s out of tune piano everyday, and prepping zoom theatre material here and there, they are missing the days of bright lights and full houses, and therefore delighted to reminisce the past and ideate the future with Dani on the Next Canon Podcast. Pre-pandemic stage credits include: The Tempest (Seattle Shakespeare Company), Bright Star the Musical (Taproot Theatre), The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (Seattle Children's Theatre), Native Gardens (Intiman), Disenchanted! the Musical (Mamches Presents/2019 Gregory award nomination).

Ana María and I talk about kicking Neil LaBute out of the Canon SPOILERS he’s got to go. I know, you’re all shocked. We talk about AWESOME Latinx Playwrights and theatre makers that deserve more recognition and about major systemic change that needs to happen in the theatre community and in our country. Just another AMAZING Conversation at The Next Canon Podcast!

Ana María Campoy (she/her/hers)

Ana María Campoy is a Mexican-American theatre artist, educator, and advocate. She moved to Seattle in fall 2010 to participate in Seattle Repertory Theatre’s Professional Arts Training Program and was part of TAT Lab’s inaugural class in 2011-2012. In addition to Seattle Rep, she has taught for the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Arts Impact, Book-It Repertory Theatre, Seattle Children's Theatre, and Village Theatre. For the last five years, she has worked as an arts teaching mentor in Arts Impact's Voices from the Fields program; working with public schools in migrant districts throughout Washington state. As an actor, director, adaptor, or dramaturg, she has worked for OSF, Seattle Children's Theatre, Book-It Repertory Theatre, Washington Ensemble Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Company, and Pork Filled Productions. One of her most cherished acting roles includes Catherine in a bilingual adaptation of David Auburn's Proof, which she also produced and translated alongside director Arlene Martínez-Vásquez, and is now under consideration for publication. She has toured nationally in Living Voices's solo show, La Causa. She is a passionate and proud advocate of the performing arts, believing that performance provides communities a voice and individuals self-exploration. At the center of her work lives the driving desire to create opportunities for artists of color, to remove economic and geographical barriers for audiences and students, and to expand and deepen our American identity. Her current projects include organizing and running the all-volunteer mutual aid collective, WashMasks, which works to provide PPE support and advocacy for migrant and seasonal farm workers and their families during this current pandemic.

Welcome to the first interview of the Next Canon Podcast! Today Hayden and I will be talking all about the canon. My personal definition of the theatrical canon is the group of shows that are most generally taught and known by theatre artists and theatre goers. We are taking this moment of pause in the theatre community to talk about how we can take action to update the shows being celebrated in our community and move into the future.

Hayden Irving Ware (he/they) is an actor, musician and writer on an "extended sabbatical" from the arts industry. Armed with a BFA in Acting in Musical Theatre from Cornish College of the Arts. They plan to someday, maybe, possibly get back into the theatre scene. Until then, they are content to make lattes and cocktails during the day, and over-analyze media and play taylor swift songs on the piano at night.

Welcome to the Next Canon Podcast! This podcast was created to start the conversation about reimagining and recreating the theatre canon to make it more representative of our modern theatre community. My personal definition of the theatrical canon is the group of shows that are most generally taught and known by theatre artists and theatre goers. We are taking this moment of pause to talk about how we can take action to update the shows being celebrated in our community and move into the future.

Join me as I talk with theatre makers around the nation about the changes that they would like to see!
