Charlene Kay Fouts, founder of Healing Acres Never Again (HANA) is today's guest.

Fouts, who was the victim of abuse after abuse is certainly not a victim today.  In fact, she is a flourishing and forceful advocate, assisting victims and others who have been involved in various painful experiences, to rise above the experience and thrive.

While HANA addresses various types of trauma, the organization focuses on recovery for people who have experienced incest, domestic violence, sexual abuse, rape, and abortion. All too often, these traumas, and others, are left unchecked and lie dormant until a circumstance in life draws them out, usually in the form of nightmares, addictions, or unhealthy patterns.

In Fouts’ own words, “There’s not one of us that does not have hurts and pains that are sometimes bigger than us.  We try to ignore it or excuse that it really isn’t that bad, but the pain is there, even if we don’t understand it.”

"The storms we experience in life either build or break us. They ultimately forge our character, build our inner strength, and create our foundation in life, as well as our faith in God."

Charlene can be reached at (813) 577-2747 or charlenekay@healingacresneveragain.org

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) reports splatter our televisions, radios, computers, phones, newsletters, newspapers, and magazines.  In some parts of the country, we enter stores only to find empty shelves.  Travelers return from cruises to find themselves quarantined.  We even hear of coughing individuals being asked to deboard their plane.

Some predict that this is the beginning of a panademic, while others adamantly proclaim it to be yet another hype situation; one that is very much misleading.  This segment of Living Well encourages us to embrace the seriousness of the need for cleanliness and self-care at the most basic levels.

Living Well examines everyday concerns with a focus on women. Relationships, responsibilities, personal safety, health and wellness, nutrition supplementation, exercise and fitness, skin care, retirement, and residual income streams are among the many topics that will be explored.

Are you one to see a bowl that is not totally filled with your favorite salad or soup as having a degree of emptiness or fullness?  Some would say that the bowl is half or almost full, while others would view it as half or almost empty.  What is it that causes us to form these very different views of sometimes similar and often the same circumstance?  Life Coach, Maquestia Grigsby, Quest Coaching and Motivation, LLC,  returns Friday, February 7th to help us unpack this and more.

Mind-set and self-talk are closely connected.  We will explore how a positive mind-set and self-talk sets us up for healthy relationships and outcomes, including those with ourselves.  On the other hand, negative mind-sets and self-talk breed the opposite results.  There is also much to be said for how we view and, ultimately, handle set-backs and failure.

As always, you are invited to call in during the broadcast with your questions or comments at:  (646) 716.8344. Feel free to contact Maquestia via email at: maquestiagriggsby@gmail.com.

I am very excited to introduce a much loved and wonderful man who happens to be my senior pastor.  He is Dr. Gary Gulbranson of Westminster Chapel in Bellevue, Washington.

Pastor Gary has faithfully served Westminster for twenty seven years and although he is nearing retirement from this particular ministry, in my heart of hearts, I know that he and his wife Jorie will continue in the Lord's service until their respective sunsets.

The subjects for today's podcast, Hope and Love, are often pondered and discussed.  However, I've asked Pastor Gary to unpack these for us from a biblical perspective.

When we look around, there doesn't appear to be much of either in our world.  It's very easy to ask, Where is the Hope and Where is the Love?  As an old-time favorite TV show use to say, Kick your shoes off and stay awhile. Folks, let's prepare to receive some food for thought and our souls.

To learn more about Westminster Chapel,  visit: https://www.westminster.org  Or, send me an email with your comments to: zenobiabailey1@aol.com.  Please be sure to place Living Well Podcast in the subject line.

Tomorrow is the official start of Winter and with it often comes what has become known as the Winter Blues.

Christmas, and all of its festivities, is just five (5) days away.  Unfortunately, it has become more and more commercialized.  This year proves to be no different, dwarfing its true meaning; one of love and sacrifice for the world versus getting and giving the "perfect gift" which, more times than not, leaves bank accounts in the red.

As daylight savings time reduces the daylight and the amount of time folks are outdoors, a type of depression known as seasonal emotional disorder surfaces; just around the time of Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwaanza.  Other concerns that contribute to this soar during these holidays and their celebrations include loneliness, economic struggles, fatigue, family disputes, and the loss of loved ones.

Our guest, Maquestia Griggsby, will walk us through ways to recognize and combat these Blues. Griggsby holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Avila University in Kansas City, MO.  She is a certified life coach and enjoys helping others discover how to achieve their personal and professional goals.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, having quiet time, salsa dancing, cooking, learning Spanish, and writing blogs about various motivational and health related topics.  She is the proud mom of a highly creative teenage son, who loves writing, music, and expressing himself through videography.

You are invited to call in during the broadcast with your questions and comments at:

(646) 716.8344. Feel free to contact Maquestia via email at: maquestiagriggsby@gmail.com.

Welcome everyone.  Today's broadcast is earlier in the day than usual.  Thank you, for your indulgences, whenever I need them, to accommodate my schedule.

Once again, I must ask, How did we get to the middle of November so quickly?  In just seven days, we will celebrate the fourth Thursday in the month, known as Thanksgiving Day, here in the US.  It is also the time of year when many of us at least think about how we might enjoy all of the food that somehow finds itself tempting our tastebuds, everywhere we turn.

To assist us with this goal, I'd like to remind you and myself of the value that fruit and raw veggies offer us.  The selections are endless.  Dress things up by selecting from the full range of colors... purples, reds, greens, white, yellows and more. If desired, make or purchase your favorite full bodied salad dressing for dipping.  In addition to these delicacies helping to minimize extra calories, they are a great source of much needed fiber.

Enjoy whatever you do and I look forward to sharing our next segment of Living Well with YOU.  Until then,

~ Zenobia

Today, I am merely introducing our next topic as I am still working out the details with our guest.

My first of two questions is where would we all be if we were unable to communicate?

Are we communicating effectively?

At its most basic level, communication is the transmission of information, by at least one  sender and receiver.   While there are debates as to whether or not there are 4, 5, and even 6 types of communication, for the pupose of the next couple of episodes we are going to stick with the four: verbal, nonverbal, written and visual.

We will be chatting with guests who will talk to us about the importance and dynamics of effective communication both in personal relationships and the workplace; examining the impact of our ever evolving technology.

I look forward to a lively conversation next time. Until then, take care!

Looking Back Helps Us to Look Ahead

Martin Luther King, Jr, depended on God through great struggles and trials, during and to the end of his lifetime.

Today, we’re entangled in all kinds of struggles, trials, and wars; at home and abroad. Of late, we all stand by and watch while thousands upon thousands, who were gainfully employed, continue to be the pawns of our government’s shutdown. And, there are our individual challenges. The world, in utter chaos, is on a collision course.  Yet, there’s still ONE who remains faithful; ONE who will see anyone who allows Him, to walk with them through these and all storms as well as the joys of life. He promises to do so.

A recent joy is one where I was selected to be a part of an International group of women forThe You Deserve Only The BESTSummit.  This event started January 11th and will last thru January 25th.  There’s still time to get your pass to the link by going to https://www.you-deserve-only-the-best.com. I'll see you back here on Thursday, January 24th, @ 3pm to launch a series on Women’s Health: Nutrition, Diet and Supplementation.

Drinking plenty of water is one of the best things we can do for our overall health. In addition to the 8, 10, even 12 glasses a day, intake at strategic times of the day, proves helpful.  For instance, a glass or two after waking helps activate internal organs. Other suggestions include drinking:

a glass 30 minutes before a meal to help digestion;

a glass right before taking a bath helps lower blood pressure;

a glass before going to bed helps avoid a stroke or heart attack; and

a glass or two in the event of a charlie horse helps relieve its cramps.

Oxidative stress occurs in our bodies when our cells and tissues are oxidized.  Too much oxygen compromises the body's ability to recycle and recover from free radicals; the oxygen molecules that can potentially cause us damage.  The effect of this damage is often likened to the corrosion properties of rust.  In fact, there's even a concept that neurodegenerative diseases stem from oxidative stress; referred to as brain rust.

Over the years, too many of us have allowed fruit and vegetables to slip, or at least decrease, from our tables.  They are, however, rapidly regaining popularity as many of us are actively assuming more personal responsibility for our health.

Cynthia Young is a published author who currently resides in Southern California.  She will be our guest on consecutive programs, September 12th and again September 26th.  Both podcasts will focus on her helpful literary contributions.

Cynthia wrote Memoirs of a Caregiver to share her journey as a caregiver to four family members stricken with Alzheimer’s disease.  Being a long distance caregiver comes with many challenges and Young writes about them and the struggles and triumphs that she encountered along the way.  Three other books chronicle life, as she sees it, via collections of rhyme.

For most families, having just one member afflicted with Alzheimer's can be devastating. In her poignant memoir, Cynthia shares her story of love and devotion as she learns how to care for four family members stricken with Alzheimer's disease, over a ten-year period.

Young narrates a journey filled with laughter, challenges, and sorrow as she commutes from California to Michigan to care for her mother, two aunts, and a cousin. She provides insight into how the disease progresses and gradually destroys the memory and abilities to learn, reason, make sound judgments, communicate, and carry out daily activities.

Join us as we have an open and candid discussion that will extend beyond the normal 15 minute segment. During Cynthia's second appearance, we will look forward to her unraveling some of the rhymes found in her first collection, Cynthology: A Collection of Rhymes.

Many of our societal ills that were attacked a decade or two ago have not only re-surfaced but are on the uprise.  Among them is the staggering statistic revealing that 75% of those over the age of 65, living in poverty, are women.

A retired teacher for disabled adults, Anita Beck has always loved sewing and interior design.  From both "loves," Nickky's Niche Designs was born.

As women, we generally seem to have a need for comfort and functionality.  We see this when we consider the rooms we use the most and the clothing we wear the most. In response to these perceived needs, Anita created a line of garments that are not only wrinkle resistant but also comfortable and flattering for today's active lifestyles. Each of her designs, including dresses, skirts, slacks, shawls, vests, jackets, and formal wear, is hand created. Anita says, "my designs travel well and so do I.  As a mobile boutique, I can bring the store right to your door."

Room makeovers are another aspect of her overall dynamic creations where she implements the same design concepts of fun, comfort, affordability, and functionality.  Anita says she feels blessed to be able to do the things she enjoys.

To preview Nikky's Niche Designs, please visit www.nikky'sniche.net.  Then, join our podcast Monday, April 11th at 3:30 pm, PST.  To speak directly with Anita, during the show, phone (646) 716-8344.

Statistics reveal that "women and families represent the fastest growing groups of our national homeless population.  Approximately half of the homeless population are families with children. Among homeless families, 90 percent are female-headed.”  The risk of women veterans becoming homeless is four times greater, and rising, than for male veterans; affecting them and their children.  Neither of these demographics should be acceptable.  Today, however, we are taking a glimpse at our homeless female veterans and their families.

Our guest is Deirdre Burton.  Major Burton served her country as a member of the United States Army Reserves with a military career that covers nearly 31 years. Today's show is dedicated to my parents, Herman and Julia De Veaux.  Both taught me and my four siblings much about selflessness and love.  Because Dad is no longer with us, Mom will be the focal point.

For years, I watched this selfless woman, who I happen to call Mom, model a relentless commitment and dedication to helping others, especially women and their children. In fact, I credit her for instilling the same commitment that has spurred my bent towards advocacy and, in turn, my daughter's.

One dimension of living well is reaching out to help others with a personal investment of time and funds. Julia has always done her best to ensure that her limited time and funds were used in the best way possible to assist those she could.

Over the years, she has seen the value in contributing funds not only to her church but community organizations. Join us as we discuss the importance of Gospel Missions and other ministry groups, located in our various communities.  With all of our support, they have the ability to reach large masses of people, making a difference to the whole person.

Note:  The purple rose is in recognition of Mom's favorite color and our journey through AD.  Many thanks to all of the individuals and organizations that help to make it a little easier for those traveling this path to live well.

One simple regimen, when made a daily habit, can greatly affect the alkalinity of our cells; known as the building blocks of life.  In fact, there are close to 40 trillion essential building blocks in the average adult's body. With the propensity of sugars, hidden and visible, in our foods, a large portion of our population tends to lean towards acidic rather than alkaline levels.

The fact of the matter is that if our pH levels are not properly balanced we are unable to process essential minerals and nutrients appropriately. PH levels range from 0.0 to 14.0 with a pH of 7.0 considered neutral.  Levels that are above 7.0 are considered alkaline. Levels that fall below 7.0, are considered acidic.  Alkaline levels are desirable and indicative of an oxygen-rich environment, while acidic levels are undesirable and indicative of an oxygen deprived environment which can lead to a host of health issues and concerns.

We will discuss this vital topic on Monday, February 1st @ 3:30 PST.

Merriam-Webster defines perseverance as the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition.  It is the action, condition,  or an instance of continuing.  It involves an attitude of steadfastness, which is indicative of being firmly fixed or convinced of something; determined and immovable.  Perseverance is a trait that never loses its lustre or value.

As you look towards your golden years are you anticipating a life of leisure? While that can be a good thing, if balanced with activity, it can be highly counter-productive; producing life-threatening results. While daily activity can provide strategic defense against disease, the contrary will tend to advance it.

It's never too late to start an exercise program. If you are afraid of falling or hurting yourself, talk with your health care provider or insurance company. Many provide resources to address these concerns and may even offer personal training. Another great resource is Go4Life.

According to Dr. Richard Hodes, director of the National Institute on Aging at the National Institute of Health, "Exercise is the best-demonstrated way to maintain health, fitness, and independence."

Today, I'd like to share one of my favorite Christmas stories. It's entitled A Cup of Christmas Tea by Tom Hegg. Every year, I read it at least once. It's message is straight forward and timely, without the indulgences that too often accompany this time of the year. It's my gift to you! In fact, before you listen, why not brew yourself a nice cup and invite a friend to listen with you? Merry Christmas from my heart and home to yours!

In the midst of our microwave and get all we can get society, too many of us too often forget the cherished attributes of thankfulness and gratitude. Our guest on December 1st at 3:30 p.m., PST will be Lisa White Bradley from Prince Georges County, MD.  Lisa is a project management professional and realtor who enjoys helping others to grow in life. She developed this passion during mission trips to Uganda, Africa years ago.

In 2013, Lisa founded Purpose Driven Alliance (PDA), Inc., a non-profit 501c3 organization of professionals networking to help others excel. She understands that when you are blessed, you are to bless others. This is a wonderful attitude to explore as we come off of our dedicated day of Thanksgiving and prepare to celebrate Christmas, Hannakah, and Kwaanza.
