Manuj Aggarwal has a scary topic: Artificial Intelligence. Well, it seems scary until you get into it and
he addresses some key fears right away.
• No, AI won’t take away jobs.
• Yes, it’s here to stay.
• Yes, as with calculators, microwaves, and computers, you’ll need to learn to work with it.
• You need to learn to ask better and better questions
A.I. reflects your world of bias, based on the questions you as an individual pose to it. That said, if you think bigger and bigger and A.I. is harvesting global information in seconds, it could solve real world problems.
This was an awesome and mind-expanding interview.
Enjoy!

You might think the topic of Project Management would be boring. Ordinarily, you might be right. And yet, the people behind this disruptive technology are anything but boring!
What can you learn from a woman who’s a partner in the development and distribution of a start-up app that’s project-management based? A LOT.
Her journey is something as she doesn’t have a college degree, but she was playing in the big-kids’ sandbox at Proctor and Gamble and Starbucks.
Her app is something as it’s AI-based and streamlines the logistics timeline for builders. And her heart-centered giving is something, employing a company devoted to helping trafficked women.

What does a retired Marine Chief Warrant Officer know about having tough, sexy confidence? Well, Sandra Gonzalez lives it, speaks about it, and teaches it.
During our interview, Sandra shared how her father influenced her to go into the military and how she fell in love with the Marines. As a woman, she had to prove herself over and over. That got her to be tough, internally. During this interview, you wouldn’t be able to tell that she’s as much of a badass as she is.
Through some tough times of divorce, death, and debt (a bad divorce followed by the loss of her father each of which cost her dearly) she realized that internal resilience will see her through. She notes, there aren’t losses, only beautiful lessons.
She now teaches high-level entrepreneurs how to take command of any room they walk into.
Requisites: You have to want to grow.
You have to have a warrior’s mindset to shift past obstacles and open to
opportunities
Battle the inner critic and the voices of uncertainty
Give yourself compassion
She says, just believe, “I’m going to be okay.”

Byron Athene is a psychotherapist and a bit of a philosopher who believes we have some concepts wrong when it comes to emotions.
He backs into his theory by explaining that a lot of people think that we need to have bad to explain (or enjoy) the good and that if something good happens, something bad is likely to happen.
Personally, I’m more a fan of the law of polarity which says that both exist at the same time, so what is it we’re actually focusing on.
Byron says that some people believe that “bad” emotions exist to motivate you. And I have a different view around that type of motivation. We get ethics and morals when we’re younger, we also are given the good child/bad child constructs based on behavior for the sake of control.
And then there’s what Byron calls the inevitability theory. We’re bound to feel bad about certain things.
I’m not certain about any of this, but I’m willing to entertain it because I want ideas to percolate through here. For me, I learned early on that I could choose which emotions to feel. We, as adults with adult language, perception, and constructs, can choose what we experience and feel. Where Byron and I agree is on the point of what we believe creates our reality.
Well, Byron takes us to HIS theory, what he class the Baby Theory. In short: Babies cry to get their needs met. Babies learn that by feeling bad, they’re comforted. And therefore, they take the syllogistic tree (If/Then) to the emotional place of “If I feel bad, I’ll get the comfort I need.” He sees “bad” emotions as manipulative.
And I’m not so sure I agree with him. Still, he’s an agreeable person and it was an amazing conversation. I invite you to tune in.

Blair is all about Resilience.
Most people would find a cave to hide in if they experienced the sequential losses of family members that Blair endured. But her story is not one of retreat. Quite the opposite, in fact. Hers is one in which “bouncing forward” defines resilience. For someone who says that she lives with depression and anxiety, this interview is filled with energy and genuine smiles.

I’ve never done anything political on my show. But this is One Sharp Sword - cutting through to what matters most. So when I was introduced to a man who has been a U.S. Gov’t contractor (which he admits is a euphemism for spy) who found his moral compass wouldn’t let him act on the president’s orders, I wanted to learn more.
With Phillip Drake, there IS more. He’s also directly involved in rescuing girls and women from the sex trafficking industry. This is a huge issue, because it’s happening right here - no matter where you are - it’s happening around you. And, because of what he knows and because of what he believes, he’s put his hat in the ring to become the next U.S. President.
So, I’ve potentially interviewed the next president of the United States. Yes, a lot of things need to align for that to happen, but it’s possible. And I invite you to listen in to what Phillip Drake believes in and see if there’s anything you’d really push against. If nothing else, we’ve got some amazing leadership lessons woven throughout this content. I think this guy could actually bring people together over a conversation, not a shouting match. And look, you don't have to agree with everything he says. I don't agree with 100% of everything that my best friend says. But I listen. And if any other presidential candidate wants to be interviewed on my show, I’d entertain the idea.
Here’s Phillip Drake’s story:
After being involved in spying on U.S. Citizens under the Office of the Inspector General, he had his son five years ago and his perspective and values changed. He notes becoming a man of principles and integrity.
This interview takes place on his family farm in South Carolina and he notes that he was taught to do the right thing and noted that the world isn’t always fair.
In terms of politics, Phillip notes that we need to really work with people. Big companies and government organizations are entities. And entities have no feelings. Agents are extensions of entities and we need to ensure that agents can actually act on behalf of The Constitution.
Phillip makes no bones about some of the things that are wrong in this country: “The school system is a joke! We’re not taught history correctly. Nor were we taught about The Constitution correctly.” Separately he emphasizes, “The Constitution is the law of the land!” But who really knows what it says?
In terms of running for president, Mr. Drake notes that it’s not something he necessarily wants to do, but it’s something he feels he has to do!
Leadership lessons:
• Stay Curious - Phillip decided to run for president then decided to learn what it would
take to do that. He never stops learning.
• Go for your goals - there will be obstacles, but your passion for the outcome will help you
overcome the obstacles.
• Just communicate! So simple, yet so hard to do!

David Achata is a leadership coach and management consultant. He’s a soft-spoken, reflective extrovert who loves hiking and mountain biking.
Rather than traditional college, David pursued the path of spending a decade in pastoral ministry.
He found that saying YES to opportunities paved the way for him. As he’s opened to authenticity, he’s learning about and leading others in showing the True Self vs. The False Self (sometimes the one that’s more public if alignment and maturity aren’t present).
His history made him overly responsible and feeling like he needed to create control around everything and now he embodies being able to approach situations with open hands vs. those that grasp and end up with nothing.
His new book is Executive Retreats for Busy Business Leaders, though it’s relevant to everyone. A few concepts stand out -
Doing this - getting away - will help you find your Vision (and your shared vision).

Axel Meierhoefer still carries his accent with him, having come from a port town in Germany. He became fascinated with flying because of his Grandfather and Uncle’s involvement with the airlines. He passed the pilot’s test for Lufthansa just as they stopped hiring. Instead, he found the U.S. Airforce and moved up the ranks to become an instructor.
Following the path of learning what makes for success, looking for clues both within and outside of the military, especially focused on what makes for a good leader. Exploring what the wealthy do with their money to protect it and grow it, Axel found real estate.
While broad, Axel narrowed his scope to Residential Real Estate and now helps people on their path to Time and Money Freedom by showing how to become successful in owning property, even if you don’t have a lot of money to start with.
Axel offers a sound perspective in this interview and though there can never be promises about investing returns or offers of tax advice, much of what Axel talks about is worth looking into further.

Peter Anthony helps us understand how to sell more without pushing a sale, but rather by simply being authentic. Recognizing that sales isn’t about foisting something on someone, but actually helping the other person by solving a problem for them, we enter the magical world of collaboration. Collabradabra!
When Peter joined IBM and was sent to sales training, he found that his curiosity overrode what he was taught. While his supervisors weren’t pleased with his style of selling by actually finding out about the other person, they couldn’t argue with his results.
Peter now helps organizations grow by helping them collaborate internally and externally.
As so many of my guests discuss, we touched on alignment as a topic. Spend time talking with team members, find out about them, tell them about yourself and your values. Peter notes that the quality of your relationships is based on the quality of your conversations. He also points out that conversations are like playing a game, which wouldn’t be any fun if only one person had a turn.
Meaning in your work is found when you think of the end user.

Talking about owning a franchise isn’t sexy.
In fact, it made me, as the podcast host, wonder why I should have someone who does franchise stuff on the program. And then, I thought about what I teach - and I got curious. I went to a place of judgment, so I knew I must be missing something.
What was it about franchises that I was missing?
Stacey Marmolejo grew up being guided to stick to things that were safe and more secure. The military was a secure career route, but she didn’t want that. Corporate was secure, and it’s a path she took. Until she didn’t. She pivoted into franchising after watching her son come alive with energy in a music camp. Stacey found a music school where she could help her son and other kids find a way to be themselves and become more expressive, while belonging to a group.
Who knew that franchises could offer comfort like that?
There are over 4,000 franchise brands from which to select and they’re not all mainstream.
How do you now which one is for you, if any?
Stacey will walk you through a competency assessment, a motivation assessment, and review your finances. She advises, buy a franchise you can afford.
Later in the program she notes that you only need about 30% of the buy in costs because the Small Business Administration will help. Get your loan through an SBA Preferred Bank and you’ll be on a great path.
If this is your first business, it’s like a paid internship to learn how to run a business. You get the playbook. Yep, if you want to own your own business, consider a franchise.
There’s so much more! Listen in for great tidbits.
And for a free, no-obligation chat with Stacey, reach out to her at StaceyMarmolejo@gmail.com
Let’s PLAY!!! You know that I’m all about Exponential Success. Leveraging success happens when you actively promote (and leave room for) creativity. And the best way to get creative? PLAY!!!
Mike Montague is a master. He grew up with Creative Nerdery - a term from his family about the play they engaged in. Along Mike’s path, he was a DJ, a computer geek, and a radio host. These days, he’s a corporate speaker and occasional Karaoke DJ.
Here are some of the key insights from today’s podcast:
The pressure to have fun can suck the fun out of the situation (wedding, vacation, etc.) So relax a bit. Take the pressure off.
The benefits of play include:
Great memories are made in the dynamic movement between chaos and order
Get away from your usual confines of where you live or work. Get outside!

It takes effort to inflate a balloon and only one bad or sharp edged experience to pop it. Having come off of a cruise not that long ago, I was reflecting on the exceptional customer service we had. And then, at the end, security called me out for having chosen to purchase a bunch while on my travels. The line stopped moving and I felt like a criminal as everyone wanted to see what the issue was. Who was the guy that security was asking to wait? I was the guy security needed to escort to CBP. It sounded so scary, but Customs and Border Patrol just needed to verify my receipts. For them, that’s a normal process. For me, especially because people were staring at me, I found that two weeks of goodwill was gone in an instant as I felt humiliated and angered. You and your team need to remember that everything you do represents your brand. It takes a long time to build a solid, happy, relationship-based experience and only one instant to blow it all. Spend some time here. Think about how you build good will with your family, your friends, and your customers. Don’t let on rogue person stuck in doing her job via a checklist be the reason that you lose customers or blow out a long-earned relationship. I’m not cynical. It’s just this time of year, gratitude seems to feel forced. Personally, I wake up annoyingly perky with “thank you” as the first two words to escape my lips. We don’t need a day for this. We need to decide what or who is in and what or who is out of our circle. Recognize the small stuff. Acknowledge yourself. Take a breath. Celebrate in your own way. It used to be that at gas stations, you could get full service. You’d get your gas pumped and you’d learn about the fluid levels in your car. That doesn’t happen much any more and what’s true is that we don’t pay much attention until we get a service notice or until something goes wrong. Even then, we need to take action to get checked out or to get rejuvenated. And that means, drawing from that analogy, that you need to take action to take care of yourself. Put “get-away” days on your calendar every couple of months. Check in with yourself about your relationships, your finances, your career, and your philanthropy. What could use more attention and what distractions do you need to cut out? It’s time to check under the hood! You may have recognized that you’re not the same person you were 20 years ago. What matters to you today is different from what mattered, even yesterday.
In this episode, one big question, one core observation, three core tenets, and one thing to repeat show up: Do you know what happens if you don’t step out of your comfort zone?
Absolutely Nothing
Most people spend more time planning their vacation than they do planning who they want to become to have the life they say they really desire.
The three key principles involved in Exponential Success are:
Values - what you had won’t be what’s needed for where you’re going
Vision - get real clarity about where you’re headed (sometimes people need coaches to gain that clarity)
Vitality - get grateful, get happy, and be that beacon of light for others
Life Is Working For Me - repeat that with the emphasis on a different word each time. Say it out loud and listen to yourself as you do!
And, it’s time to register for the next Exponential Success Summit. You do not want to miss out. Be among the 12 at the table (I keep the group small on purpose).

We all have so much on our plates and to-do lists, that it’s important to keep that question at the forefront of your mind as you take on something new. Will I Do It? Or, might it just feel like something fun to entertain? I have started so many programs and books with the best of intentions and, when it comes down to “will I do it,” the answer is no. No, I won’t actually do it. And when I make that decision, I cut myself free from something that began to feel like an obligation. If the answer is “yes!” then the next question is “when?” - and that means pulling out my calendar and putting THE thing on the calendar in a given time slot that doesn’t compete with anything else. Cool, right? If you’ve got something on your to-do list that’s rolled over multiple times, then either delegate it, do it, or take it off of your list. It’s just that simple! Keep making your magic. See you here next week. Check out http://ExponentialSuccessSummit.com = Wayne =
It’s important to redefine success. Winning seems to be about making someone else lose. The truth is, well, that happens. It’s also true that this is an abundant universe and we can support each other in getting better.
And that’s the key to this episode - How do you define success? Is it by doing or having more than someone else? Or is it that you got what you wanted and needed and you lifted others along the way?
You decide!
See you here next week and remember to check out http://ExponentialSuccessSummit.com to dive in deeper.

You get more of what you focus on.
What are you focused on for yourself?
I’m not good enough!
OR
I’m so grateful that life is working for me!
What are you looking for from others? What are you looking for from yourself?
Focus there!
What’s the actual cost of “expensive?” Because you really have to ask yourself, compared to what?
That’s expensive…
You don’t need that…
That’s not who you are…
Who do you think you are, wanting to have or do that?
Those are other people’s voices that no longer need to haunt you. They taught you to keep in your “place.” Don’t be needy and don’t want for yourself. Don’t be selfish, for goodness sake.
The thing is, you can’t give or serve others more greatly if you’re not investing in yourself.
So who are you NOT to have or want nice things?
The question really is twofold:
Rule out ego. You don’t need designer clothes so that you fit in. You might want designer clothes because they fit and feel better than some lesser brands. That’s excellence. And it’s a choice.
Filter for excellence.
Filter for enhancing your life now and in the future.
Step into new clothes, new meals, new books, and even new mentorship.
Invest in yourself for now and in the future.

Every year on my birthday, I look for things to celebrate and recalibrate my values.
If I had things on my goal list that didn’t get completed, I had to evaluate whether I really wanted to do them or whether I couldn’t get them done. If I just didn’t want to, I decide whether it’s something I value or if the task itself was too hard. Usually, if I’m honest, what was on my list was a supposed-to-do vs a want-to-do.
Being honest with myself allows me to
focus on the things that really, truly matter to me.
Next steps:
Celebrate the accomplishments.
Plot new goals.
Use journals, one is for personal reflection. The other is for ideas that could enhance the way I work.

An apologetic leader isn’t followed for very long. Their trust level dips and their judgment of leadership qualities are natural.
Sure, if you’ve made a huge transgression, apologize for it in the context of violating your own values and make a vow to live into your values even more fully.
Instead of an apology, consider acknowledgment and appreciation.
Turn, “Oh so sorry I was late” into “Thank you so much for your patience.”
You’ve shifted the focus from you and your tardiness to the other and their positive trait of patience.
Try that.

In our interview, he highlights that entrepreneurship is about:
He repeatedly advised that, as a leader, you need to get a coach.
Get a coach!
I underscored that to focus on the idea of, "who do I need to become to lead a company that is growing?"
The easiest part of an entrepreneur’s day: celebrate your team members!
Jim also advises over-communicating so that your message is received and focusing on your health, both physical and mental, as a role model.

How much time do we spend thinking about what needs to get done?
Are you caught in the “getting ready to get ready” loop?
One of my 1:1 clients gave me a gem when she had the insight,
I spent more time thinking about doing something than the time it would take me to do it.
Amazing, right?
There’s no “someday” on your calendar.
You will be judged for whatever you put out there.
Perfect is always flawed.
You get the best lessons by actually putting something out there.
Perfection is a verb… it, whatever “it” is, needs to be presented before it can be perfected.
Block some time.
Stop thinking.
Go and do.

Where have you let judgment stop you from showing up as your authentic self?
We all do it. We all have rules in our heads that stop us from fully expressing who we are because, “what would other people think?”
The lesson here is simple:
If you want people to accept you and trust you,
then you need to accept and trust yourself first.

They’re not stupid, they just can’t read.
Colleen is a woman of service with a great heart. She grew up in Southern California and became a nurse. But she was called back to something closer to home as her father had revealed a deep secret. At 48 years old, John Corcoran let his family know that he couldn’t read.
Having grown up in what she thought was a “normal” home, she now sees how her father became angry when pressured to read documents and would have “lost” his glasses. His fear and anger was self protection. And this may be a clue for others.
Colleen describes her father’s path: he was told he was a winner at home, but at school, “the system told him something else.” The system will make you feel less valued.
Illiteracy affects a surprisingly huge percentage of the population. Surprisingly huge. And that’s why it’s a “hidden crisis.” People hide illiteracy in multiple ways and they’re not stupid, they just can’t read. They never learned and yes, they were passed onto the next grade in school.
There is help for anyone at any age -
There are 44 phonemes (sounds) in the English language.
There are numerous graphemes for each of those sounds.
But there’s only one name for each letter in the alphabet.
Humans are born to communicate. We do that vocally. The written language was made up. Think about making certain sounds. Then think about the different spellings for all of those sounds (eg: “oo” = threw, through, loop, soup, etc.)
Help is out there:

You’d think that the president of a bank, of BofA in New York state, would be stuffy. You’d think he’d be all about the numbers. And you’d think he’d be hard to talk to. And, refreshingly, you’d be wrong on all counts!
Jeff Barker is the Market Segment Executive for Bank of America’s Metro Markets. Oh, and he’s also the President of Bank of America in New York State.
Growing up in a family business in New Haven, CT, he learned early on how much great customer service mattered. Individual interactions make all the difference in someone connecting to you, your store, and your brand.
Jeff tells his story from boyhood to college (Cornell and Wharton) to running department stores, packed goods, electronics retail, Barnes and Noble, and now Bank of America for New York.
In addition to all of those, he’s doing amazing philanthropic work in communities across America creating economic mobility through capital investments. From supporting Cheech Marin’s museum of Chicano Art in Riverside, CA to helping raise financial literacy across generations at www.BetterMoneyHabits.com his goal is to advocate for racial equality and to activate sustainability for the community.
He doesn’t see himself as some grand poo-bah, but rather a general manager and leader of teams. The leadership lessons here:
And… my favorite - something ALL leaders need to remember:

On the podcast we spoke of worthiness and how that affects your identity. And we agreed that it’s important to identify who you want to be and begin living into that person and that life.
In terms of making true connections, think about yourself, others, and the resources that are involved or needed (by you and the other person).
And don’t forget to Appreciate, Value, and End With A Question.
Glad you’re here! You’re going to get a lot out of this. You wouldn’t be opposed to leaving a comment, would you?

When you realize that YOU are the one responsible for the drama in your life, your life changes. There’s only one person who is giving meaning to any given situation that affects you. That’s you. Other people will give meaning to a situation in their own way. Their drama isn’t yours.
Stop making excuses.
Stop using drama to excuse why things didn’t happen in your life.
Choose.
Decide.
Take action based on that decision.
Poof… no drama!
Life Is Better!!!

Your life isn’t static. When you stop moving or stop growing, you’re dying or… dead.
Success isn’t static. Success is very much Dynamic.
What you thought looked like success some time ago may not feel so monumentally amazing now. That’s because you’ve changed along the way. You’ve gained new skills and a new perspective. What felt like it’d be a huge accomplishment just isn’t. It was, but it isn’t.
Think about when you were learning to drive.
There were so many things to keep track of. Now, it all comes by instinct. Our big goals are like that. They’re dynamic in nature, ever changing as the horizon line shows us something new the further away from the safety of the shore we get.
And that’s the good news.
Success IS ever-changing. It needs to be. You’ve grown and what you think of as success must expand with you, your experiences, and your ever-expanding perspective in the world.
Want to explore this further? Head to www.ExponentialSuccessSummit.com to check it out.
It wasn’t unkind. It wasn’t malicious. It was a simple statement - “You’re not doing these things you said were important to you because you just don’t want to do them.”
What?
You’re not doing the things on your to-do list because you don’t want to do them. It’s that simple.
It could be that your subconscious sees a change as a threat to your identity. Well, in order to grow, you get to shed a bit of who you’ve been.
It could be that the process of doing the thing is just hard.
Well, it might be. You might have to learn to like things that are hard.
Great leaders have coaches that’ll tell them hard things.
We have trusted advisors who can call out our blind spots. And “blind spots” are called that because we can’t see them (even if they seem obvious to others).
Think about what you’ve had on your to-do list and what has and hasn’t gotten done.
What you’ve done, you did to get accolades or approval from someone else or you’ve done them to make a difference to yourself.
And the things you haven’t done, you have put off because you’re afraid of being judged as being bad at something. Or, it’s hard. Or it’s so new you don’t know where to start. So you haven’t done them because you didn’t want to… didn’t want to feel bad about doing them wrong, perhaps?
Find some help to take the first step.
Do step into the desires that are calling you.
And do follow through with being honest with yourself.

We often put off what we want to do for the sake of doing what we “should” do.
Yes, be responsible.
AND
Listen to your desires. Listen to the subtle call that says, “over here!”
It is possible to do both - be responsible AND do/get/have/be what you want.
It all starts with a decision and the how sorts out.
What’s calling you?
What are you hoping for that you’ve put off?
What’s whispering, “Over Here…!”
The hard stuff is what gets you through to the next level. You’re the one that puts the hard stuff in your path. And if you approach it with gratitude, as something you get to do, and you take on the lessons that get you through it, you will breakthrough to Exponential Success.
This podcast is a reminder of who you are and what you’re capable of.

As with most everything new, it’s hard.
Learning to drive is hard.
Learning a new language is hard.
Letting go of old habits and stepping into an upleveled version of yourself is hard.
You leave something behind.
You learn a new skill.
You gain confidence.
You practice more.
It becomes a part of you.
It’s no longer hard.
From going to the dentist to taking on a new job, relationship, or new way of being… it’s hard, until it’s not.
Just do the thing.
Keep going.
You’ve got this.
And for help along the way, consider a deeper dive.

Leaders (that’s you because you’re influencing anyone in your circle) believe that they’re doing a good job, great job, or maybe even just fine job. Seldom will leaders evaluate themselves as less than. And that’s okay. If you’re leading, though, you need to know that there are blindspots and you’re missing something really important: each team member has different needs and every team member wants to feel like he/she/they belong.
Belonging
Flexibility
Freedom
How can you build those into your culture?
What is your next best step to build a true Culture of Caring?
Reflect, then start.
Even if you work for yourself… reflect, then start.
Let’s talk goal setting, for real. Not wishes, but getting stuff done.
Whether you’re guiding your team or guiding yourself, whether you’re managing up, managing down, or focused on your own accomplishments, you need to look at three key things:
It’s just that simple.
Sometimes the support that’s needed is a break. Sometimes it’s a celebration. Sometimes it’s specific guidance from an outside person or coach. Sometimes it’s hiring the right people.
Reflect on those three things and then manage your calendar to allow for the appropriate amount of invested time you need for your goals to actually be met.
And… go!
Remember how good it feels to go through your closet and get rid of old clothes that you’ve been hanging onto for “someday.” You liked them, but they no longer serve you. Just as you would clear out old, expired food from your pantry, you need to do that with old, expired thinking patterns and styles.
What thoughts might you have to get rid of in order to let new thoughts in?
What is it you truly want to Do, to Have, or to Become?
How might a person who has that think and act? What do they let in? What do they let go of?
What will you let go of in order to let the new way of thinking in?
Are you “livin’ the dream” or maybe you’ve given up on your dreams? I know I’ve let go of a lot of dreams along my journey. They were entertaining. They served me at the time, and like a loved one’s passing, I’ve grieved the loss of what was. I don’t shoot photographs on film anymore.
I don’t do martial arts kicks quite as high or as quickly as I used to.
I’ve changed.
My body has changed.
My focus and desires have changed.
It doesn’t mean I don’t value the times that I had those things in my life. It means that I’m not the same person I was and that my experiences have given me a different perspective. In short, my values have changed.
You’ve changed and you can let go of the dreams you once had. You no longer need to drag them along, flogging yourself for what you didn’t do.
Rather, create new dreams. Live into those, with the age and wisdom you have that’s different from the age and wisdom you had a decade or more ago.
Listen for the inner voice that guides you, whispering “over here…!”
And if you want to dive into how to access that voice and set a plan for living further into a life of fulfillment, do yourself a favor and check out www.ExponentialSuccessSummit.com
Andrea T Edwards always knew who she was, even as a teen.
Strong and outspoken, she grew up in Australia and seemed to find a way of fighting for what’s right in the world. Or, perhaps, how to make the world a little more right.
She found herself in tech and in PR and Content Marketing, but that’s not what drives her. On today’s podcast, we dove into Freedom and we discussed social issues in a way I haven’t touched them here before.
Andrea shared her views on climate change and what we - all of us… each of us - need to do to make a difference for our children and children’s children.
Here, we explore Uncommon Courage - here we look at how an electric car might seem like a great idea until you realize that you must own it for seven years in order to have a zero basis for the footprint it took to actually create it. That’s one example Andrea T Edwards offered up.
Find her on all Social at @AndreaTEdwards and at www.AndreaTEdwards.com

It’s said that if you put a frog in cool to luke warm water and ever-so-slightly turn up the temperature, the frog won’t notice as it becomes acclimated to the higher temperature. When, at some point, the frog ends up in boiling water, it’s too late.
Kind of gross, I know.
And we do that to ourselves a bit, don’t we? We tolerate and tolerate and tolerate until we’re buried by something we would have never let into our lives if we were paying attention.
And that’s the bottom line.
What is it you’ve bargained with yourself about that “isn’t that bad” that really needs a major shift from you?
Look at what’s building up that you’ve let build up. That could be food or alcohol that you consume. It could be social media time. It could be the way you’ve let someone at home or at work speak to you.
If it’s not about love, abundance, or support, take another look. And maybe, take another action.
I just got back from a root canal. WooHooo!!! Such exciting news. No, not really. And no one should become an expert patient when it comes to having root canals done.
Still, practicing anything that isn’t something you look forward to makes it easier and builds expertise.
I’m an expert dish-doer. I can just get ‘em done. I don’t look forward to it and I also don’t run away from it. I’m an expert cat-box cleaner. I don’t look forward to it. It needs doing, and when it’s done, everyone is happier. Besides dishes and cat boxes, I’m an expert blogger. I’ve been blogging for years; every Wednesday, I produce a blog called Wednesdays With Wayne
(check out www.WaynePernell.com/blog).
Do I look forward to writing? Sometimes yes. Sometimes it’s just inconvenient. And yet, I get it done.
What about you?
What have you put off that you might become more of an expert at and can get done so much faster and easier now? Your bills? Your taxes? Your sales calls? Your content creation?
Or maybe it’s that tough conversation at work or at home you’ve been putting off.
Maybe it’s searching for that new job or partner or car or credit line or science article.
Maybe you need to get better at shutting down social media.
It all takes practice. And when you commit to it, you need to follow through.
Only in following through can you become trustworthy. Trustworthy with yourself and with those you made the promise to. You first. You’ve got to become trustworthy with yourself and not start bargaining about what you said you’d do and the follow through you told yourself you’d have and then when something comes up, you get side-tracked.
That stuff happens to everyone, even the most driven and most successful. The difference is the time spent in the sidetrack. Moments vs. minutes to hours.
Practice.
Commit.
Prove yourself trustworthy.
That’s how you’ll do the hard stuff till it gets easy!
Paul Glover calls himself a Recovering Scoundrel. He notes that he is a recovering trial attorney who is also a convicted felon.
He works in leadership and workforce development with an emphasis on legacy building and his story of incarceration parallels the human condition.
Having grown up in three different locations, with a mother who was married seven times and a father who was married four times, his childhood was unstable, to say the least. It’s no wonder that you hear him use the term Commitment multiple times through this interview.
He says that he doesn’t blame his childhood. In fact, his first admonition to us as his audience is, “It’s your obligation to overcome.”
At a trial lawyer, he was hanging out with union people, some of whom were what he describes as “dubious characters.” He notes that his desire to belong and to get that rush of adrenaline is what kept him coming back for more. The Labor Union Leaders took advantage of his hubris, offering him approval and acceptance.
He was ultimately convicted for taking kickbacks and bribes as well as threatening federal witnesses. So, yeah… that’s a thing.
Leadership Lessons:
As a Legacy Coach, Paul notes again that psychological safety is essential, that commitment is required, and that change is hard. Commitment to the process matters.

Relationships are tricky.
Growing through a dysfunctional attachment to and dependence on her sister, Amy was shaken awake when her big sister was killed in a car accident. She recreated the dependence in the relationship with her husband, a relationship that lasted 25 years, though both knew it was “fine” and really not quite right.
She grew into learning about BOUNDARIES. Such a key concept in gaining perspective and creating healthy relationships.
But what does that mean? As a coach, Amy focuses on helping couples recognize that they don’t have to agree with each other. In fact, each side can have their own beliefs and patterns for engagement. She gives permission for each person to have their own world views. The focus then is, “given that, what do you want your child to experience.”
Amy uses the acronym WTFY, meaning What’s True For You?
Key points:

Wait, what?
Yep - it’s this simple: Hope Is NOT A Strategy!
We wish for things.
We hope things will get better.
And that’s based in a MindState of fear and lack. What’s your state of mind when you wish or hope for things to work out? You’re basically afraid that they won’t. So you “hope for the best.”
What if you took charge of the EXCELLENCE in your life?
Think about leveling up to Exponential Excellence.
Allow yourself to DESIRE again and take the steps needed to fulfill that desire.
(Hint: Check out https://www.WaynePernell.com/PowerfulPresenceMasterclass)
Decide what’s IN and what’s OUT - what you will and will no longer tolerate.
Who’s responsible for the excellence in your life?
Yep! Now, what’s your next most amazing step towards it?
Go! Action, not hope!
Here’s a man who has been on stage in one of the most famous productions in the world and you’ve probably never noticed him. And that’s the point. No, he’s not some ninja or a camouflaged stage hand.
Antuan Magic Raimone is a Universal Swing, a dancer that can play the part of any of the dancers in any of the productions across the country. He’s been in In The Heights and he was among the first to join the company of Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in NYC.
Antuan notes, “the key is not to be noticed.”
This might’ve come easily as the youngest of five growing up. He was the first to go to college and knew early on that he wanted to get into dance. The man who was to emerge as “Magic” was in the junior olympics in TaeKwonDo when he was 10 years old.
Antuan speaks vulnerably about the abuse he endured at multiple points while growing up and how, even as a black belt, he found himself in an abusive situation.
Now on the path to speaking from the platform as The Soldier of Love, Antuan says that mistakes exist, fear isn’t debilitating, and vulnerability isn’t a weakness.
He also notes that change only exists when we want it to and then he said something that made me stop and think: Sometimes people don’t have the capacity to put themselves first.
Start here, he advises - repeat these statements out loud each day:
I Am Love
I Am Loved

Based on my blog which got A LOT of great response, here are some key points to keep in mind as you watch/listen to this episode -
It’s not only exhausting, it’s ridiculous to want to be liked by everyone.
It’s important to be who you are, authentically. Trying to be something you’re not for the sake of trying to fit in is exhausting and delays the emergence of the real you.
With seven BILLION people on the planet, how many people do you really need to like you or your work? Really?
When I was writing, having just one person write back to tell me I had made a difference in her life was a true gift. I had, at least, an audience of one. And that was satisfying.
Not part of this podcast, yet noteworthy, is that when I got my first hater, I celebrated. “Here’s a troll that hasn’t even read my books, but took the time to comment on what F’ing B.S. they were! I must’ve done something to get in this guy’s lane.”
People get stuck and they’ll fight to stay there. Let them. They’re not your audience either.
Choose you. Then, let others choose you. That’s how you get An Audience of Some!
Two race cars are finely tuned, side by side, they’re efficient and they are at the starting line.
One has been racing for days on end and has approached the starting line low on fuel.
The other has been pulled off the track, tuned up, fueled up, and has been readied for the new race.
Both are efficient. Only one will be effective.
You can burn the energy you have at an efficient pace, and unless you take time out, there’s no way to maintain efficiency. You certainly won’t be effective at work, at home, or in the community.
Quarantine your work time.
Quarantine your email.
Quarantine time for you… to sit, to read, to write, to exercise, or to engage with others meaningfully.
You are in charge of what the New Normal looks like for you.
Make that new normal fully yours.
March 1st was my mom’s birthday. She passed away 16 years ago. And, I miss her. Today I wanted to honor her by talking about some of the lessons I got from her while growing up. Pretty simply, they are: 1. Be Kind - it doesn’t take much to just be a good human. Don’t say anything that’ll make waves just for the sake of making waves. On the other hand, don’t hold things in, either. My mom did hold things in and taught me how to do that. Sometimes the lessons we learn are modeled in what not to do. Don’t hold things in. And certainly, say what needs to be said. Do so in a way that lifts others. Be kind. 2. Think About Others - this was a lesson in empathy. What might the other person be thinking or feeling? And when you can understand that, what might they want or need? How can you show up to fill that need? The caution here is that you needn’t give of yourself until there’s nothing left. Show up in service to others. Take time for yourself, too. You can’t give what you don’t have. So refuel and give of yourself. 3. Leave The Place Better Than You Found It - Now I think my mom meant to keep it tidy, and what I can say is that sometimes a place IS better because YOU were there! Show up, show up in full presence. If there’s a way you can lift and support another person because you’re attending to the space you’re in, that’s awesome. I’ve extrapolated this to mean my workspace, too. At the end of the day, is it in better shape than the way I came to it? Make that happen! 4. Use Your Intuition - My mom knew things. There wasn’t any reason she knew things, she just did. Some of that was the era she was raised - I mean, she lived through WWII. And in the way that we’re living though a pandemic and learning to read a person’s mask-covered face through their eyes, my mom had all kinds of political and social rules to live through. So by the time she had kids, she knew things. She knew how to listen to what was being said or presented and she knew how to pay attention to the gaps, as well. It’s a skill I’m proud to have learned. It serves me well. 5. Keep Learning - If you stop learning, you’ve stopped growing and really, you’ve stopped living. Keep growing. Keep learning. Remember, “you can’t give what you don’t have” is as much about refueling your body as it is about growing your knowledge and wisdom. You can only give from the level you’re at, so find a coach or mentor and step into your personal growth!
Six great lessons from a wonderful woman I’m proud to have called “mom.”
We tell ourselves and others to make “good” choices, but we really don’t know whether a choice is good or bad until we see what the outcome is. You might be thinking that of course there are good and bad choices. The reality is that a decision or choice is just that. It’s a decision. It’s neither good nor bad. The outcome is what we judge and even that isn’t good or bad. The question is, will heading down this path get me closer to my desired outcome?
Will sitting on the couch, binge-watching my favorite show, and ordering pizza get me my desired outcome? It might! The desired outcome might be that you want or need time to “just veg out.”
On the other hand, if your desired outcome was that you wanted to land that big client, then that choice of activity isn’t likely to get you closer to your goal.
Questions to consider: Is what you’re doing getting you closer to or further from what you said you wanted?
What do you think will happen if you head down this path?
Teaching our kids to think is wrapped into all of this. It does them no good to sit in judgement of their choices. “Make good choices” is a set up for condemnation. Teach them how to think. Explore possible outcomes with them.
And the same holds true for your family, your work team members, and even yourself.
Don’t condemn a “bad” choice unless you have a full perception of all of the possible outcomes that could happen. (Children don’t have the adult perspective yet.)
What outcome are you after?
Will this decision/choice get you closer to or further from that?
Choose - - experience - - learn - - choose again.
Jennifer Kem grew up in the plantation town of Wailea, HI. As the young descendent of Filipino immigrants, she was a studious introvert. Her grandmother, a great influence, had her reading the business section of the newspaper, giving her a very important lesson early on: “You can think beyond what’s around you.”
Jen generously shares her story, taking us from childhood, through her MBA at UC Berkeley to her work at the Ogilvy Company where she ran coffee and ached to do grander copy writing. She watched as ad execs created “Ad Duels” pitting Coke against Pepsi and found their use of architypes intriguing.
Diving deeper into the concepts of how people consume, Jen found that marketing really IS a science! She’s a lover of Values-Driven Leadership and notes that so much of a leader’s journey is based on Vision, Violation, and Voids.
Jen’s journey continued as she became a product manager at Oracle and went on to run Verizon’s B2B for the west coast. Known as “the fixer” even in her early 20s, Jen wanted to learn how to succeed more greatly.
She asked an important question of one of the senior leaders: What do I have to do to have your job in 10 years?
It wasn’t a wish, it was a foundational question for creating a plan. But when she took on some hard work and was passed over for a promotion, she began to wonder how to make it on her own.
o Does the market want it?
o Will people really pay for it?
Seeing how big Victoria’s Secret became, she began an import and retail business in Hawaii, a biz that grew to $10M. She notes that she was betting on herself as the outlier.
But 2008 was cruel to so many in retail and her business was no exception.
She lost almost everything and fell into a depression.
She recalls sitting on the front porch, just watching cars pass by and her then-10-year-old daughter saying, “Mommy, you’re Jen Kem and it’s time to wake up.”
She notes, “I was the hardest project I had to take on.”
Returning to corporate to get back on her feet, she reentered as a consultant and created KemCom, now a multi-million-dollar company. She began to study how she had become a success and created a model for others, launching The MasterBrand Institute.
Here, she guides entrepreneurs back to Values-Driven Leadership and notes that most fail when it comes to managing systems (people, processes, and technology).
She notes that leaders must take on three roles, then let go of two.
Visionizer – founder
Strategizer – overseeing Sales and Marketing
Mobilizer – the one to oversee operations, processes, and systems

We sure do talk to ourselves an awful lot, don’t we?
For everything we do, all the chatter we allow, everything we eat, all of the relationships we engage in, ask this simple question: Is This Love?
You’re worthy of giving and receiving love.
You are worthy of filtering out of your life anything that doesn’t feel like love - from the clothes you wear to the food you eat to the self-talk you engage in to the relationships you’ve tolerated.
Build back a stronger you by taking care of the person that gets to decide how others treat you: YOU.
You let the world know how to treat you by how you treat yourself.
Is this love? I’m giving you a big virtual loving hug right now!
Most people know Chase Tucker as the soft-spoken beast who does treadmill and strength training on Peloton. He’s so much more than that!
Born from parents who struggled to make a life here, Chase recognizes a responsibility from his legacy. His mom was moved here from Haiti when she was four years old. And though she didn’t speak English and was ridiculed while growing up, she became a pediatrician and her focus is on giving care to the underserved. Chase’s father, having grown up in a pretty tough part of Chicago, struggled his way out and into med-school, also becoming a physician. He lovingly calls them “warriors who combined forces.”
One of the traits he took on was to be fueled by being pushed back on.
While he loved Chicago (who doesn’t, really), he moved to Florida when he was 11 and then to Tennessee a few years later. He was good in sports, and notes having played soccer since he was just 4 y/o.
Not only is Chase a good human, he and I found common ground in our discussion in several areas.
First, he’s a fan of curiosity and has a passion for learning.
He shared that books allowed him to escape while bringing the world to him. And this allowed him to leverage being able to tap into both curiosity and imagination, noting that as a gamer, play has always been important to him. And, he notes, movement is play.
In terms of curiosity, Chase reminds us to think beyond First Principles, moving from blockage to bridge. He encourages us, ala Tom Bilyeu, to take on the identity of a learner. Doing so allows you to be anti-fragile.
We found that we both are continuous learners and he points out to those consuming information that there’s a difference between input and learning.
Besides being influenced by Tom Bilyeu, Chase appreciates Gary V and Ido Portal, a movement practitioner whom Chase trained with in London.
As an enduring learner, Chase challenged himself (and us) to ask, “Am I being the student who is worthwhile pouring into?”
I have to say, that question shook me a bit and had me questioning how devoted I really was to the programs I’ve taken.
When Chase was in college, he realized that he didn’t belong on the med-school path. He earned his degree in biology, exercise science, and kinesiology. When he was working with the physically broken, he found that people’s fears and doubts amplified. We can handle everything in our lives until something makes us focus on just one thing - an injury, for example. And that led him to find purpose, helping people overcome barriers.
Introspection, even in his early 20s led him to question what he wanted to be known for.
He began working in the physical fitness fields, running a bootcamp, his own business, and more. Chase joined Peloton four years ago - they found him - and because of the alignment, he jumped in.
He sees a dare as a challenge to take on and encourages others to do the same.
Set a new standard for yourself and recognize that every experience has a different core (from which to build).
Chase Tucker’s current mission is to learn to become the person that improves 1 Billion lives. I stopped him there, since my mission is to teach, touch, and positively transform a billion lives. I’d never heard anyone else speak that way!
He’d like to create a VC fund and pour energy into people, businesses, and organizations who have typically lacked traditional access to personal and professional development. He sees this as the underestimated community.
Chase speaks affirmations at the end of each Peloton training. I read these back to him and he smiled his big smile, saying that he got an energy spike hearing them. “Is that what they sound like??!!”
Affirmations:
I am becoming my best, strongest, and highest self with each day I choose to take consistent actions toward my goals and purpose.
I am in competition with no one except the person I was yesterday, and I am exactly where I am supposed to be on the path I have specifically chosen and created.
I am the master of my mind.
I am the master of my body.
I am the master of my life.
Chase can be reached @ChaseTucker on most social platforms.
What a joy!
“How much worse could it get?” I hear people ask that question as if it’s a cosmic challenge. And the Universe says, “here, hold my beer!” We can see the bad all over the place in the world.
We can get sucked into the bad, horrible news.
We could choose worse.
OR
You could choose to be a beacon of light in the darkness knowing that any amount of feeling bad for what’s going on in the world isn’t going to help fix the problem.
I feel so bad that there’s…
Covid
Racism
Hunger
Sex Traficking
And on and on…
You need to be aware that those things exist. They are horrible and unjust. And again, your feeling bad won’t fix them. So choose to be an agent of change. Pick something that matters to you. Pay attention to it. Bring your beacon of light to it. Make your difference in the world.
As you step into the world, choose to lift others around you. It’s by doing that, by lifting and enlightening, that we make ripples.
It’s the ripples of the accountable individual, you, that change the world for the better.
It all… Starts With OneⓇ

You’ve got goals, that’s great. And, from the last podcast, you know I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions.
I am a fan of goals, though.
And I’m a fan of micro-goals. Moving toward your Desired Outcome (or what I call your EPO - Envisioned Positive Outcome) a little every day.
Here’s how to make that happen - it’s the same way that you’d set a GPS!
Knowing that you can’t change another person, what is it that you want for yourself that you’re willing to move towards?
You need to know your starting point so the GPS can chart an accurate road for you. Your brutal honesty with yourself makes all the difference in whether you achieve your goals or not.
Remember this key point: You do NOT need all of the step-by-step directions before you pull out of the parking lot. You need to have your outcome in mind and know that you’re moving closer to it. The more you move the more defined and refined the movement becomes.
You reach your goals by getting really clear about what they are and putting yourself in gear. Take your foot off the brake and give a little gas. Pay attention to road conditions and adapt.

Resolutions don’t stick for three key reasons
So, what to do instead?
Pick a word - what word will you live into, incrementally, every day?
Pick a word for yourself this year.
Say that word out loud at the beginning of each day.
Set reminders in your phone to see that word.
And at the end of each day, reflect on how you lived into that. A little at a time, you’re becoming Your Word.

Happy New Year!
You have a choice - to get through another day, month, quarter, and year. Or, to choose to grow and lift those around you every single day.
How do you want to start your day?
How do you want to end each day?
Are you just getting through, living in fear and lack?
Or can you step into your day, knowing you’re making a difference and embracing growth and challenge while lifting those around you.
Your choice - to simply survive is Dis-Ease.
To thrive is about growth and expansion…!
This is your year. Go make a difference!

Sarah is an actor and playwright out of New York, who started acting and dancing when she was nine years old, performing her whole life. In the past decade, she’s written four plays.
Sarah is compelled to write and then gives herself freedom to write simply with her message in mind. She notes that her belief in herself, without the attachment to outcome, is part of what’s made her successful. She writes because she must, not because she “should.”
With plays ranging from political to dark farce involving family relationships as well as a play for kids to offer them coping skills, Sarah brings her characters to life.
As leader Sarah just carries on, “doing the hard stuff,” and an observer and social commentator, Sarah’s nextis starting her own production company.
Key messages:
Give yourself permission to think and dream bigger!
Have bold trust in yourself!

Felicia teaches us that the dash between the dates of birth and death is what we need to celebrate.
As an events planner and after seeing that funeral homes were simply templated, Felicia wanted to find a way to personalize each person’s life celebration.
In normalizing death as a part of life, she discovered the Death Positive Movement.
There are so many ways to celebrate the end of life and different types of funerals. When thinking about the end of life, it’s important to start with a plan!
PLAN:
Death is a natural part of life.
It’s not morbid, it’s sacred (the same way birth is sacred).
Managing loss -
Don’t feel like it’s urgent to manage the funeral unless the body is being buried right away. Making decisions a few days after the passing and having planned ahead of time will help you. Pre-plan how you want to be remembered.

Rob Thomas is a networking hero - he teaches people how to make connections work. It’s a lost art and he’s got it.
The son of old-school communications parents, he learned the importance of crafting the way we engage. His commitment and integrity shine through as examples for any of us.
From the old-style fax toner salesman to the instructor he is now, he says, “don’t be that guy who tries to sell you.” Ask questions. Sales is about connection and whether you’re known, liked, and trusted.
Connections aren’t always about selling. And he notes that to get to know someone, plan your conversation. Find out about their Family, their Occupation, their Recreational activities and hobbies, and the Message they have. This is the FORM framework and part of the Rob Thomas Method™ (RTM).
Here’s another helpful tip. Ask for introductions.
Introductions is such a better word than referrals.
How can you be a hero for the other person? Keep that in mind the next time you’re networking.

What can being punched in the face teach you about leadership?
From Vice-Champion fighter to success coach, Nico Veressen has taken some blows. And as someone used to winning, he knows how to dish it out, too.
Raised in Belgium and now living in Portugal, Nico says he was shy at 14 and that’s when he knew he wanted to get into competitive fighting. After winning his way up the ranks in championships, retinal detachments stopped him. He could take no more physical blows.
Layering his experience on his psych background, Nico has a lot to share that is relevant for us all. Some of the key take-aways are:
Nico says, “I’m a champion; I get results.” And I’m thinking, what if we all lived that way!!!

Carolyn has almost two decades of business coaching coming from her experience in the corporate world and trying things out - what works and what doesn’t.
She says she’s been a bit of a risk taker, and the lesson here is to bet on yourself! Carolyn continues, noting that her strategy was based on the mistakes she’s made. So just know that you’ll make make your own mistakes and keep moving forward, believing in the way things could be and making that your reality.
Key point: to redefine yourself, let go of what is no longer (or never has been) fulfilling.
When you’re searching for a “me” - that new identity - you have to keep moving and stay open to being creative.

Working at 14, but forbidden from going to college… from drilling in a warehouse to becoming a fashion executive - What A Story!
Jill says that she just tried things. She took on the family label for her - Firecracker - and forged into the world.
Drawing on courage and tenacity, Jill embraced the New. And we can all learn from her.
She saw beyond the tradition of the industry and wanted to help create clothing for “real sized women” to inspire confidence. Her “I’ll show you” attitude led her to the top as she continues to focus on how to accentuate the positive.
Jill says that doing so inspires trust and that leads to shared stories and that creates true connection. That’s how she runs Frox, her specialty clothing shop.
On the podcast and in her book, Behind the Button, she talks about how putting cloth in a dye bath changes it and strengthens it. And it’s that process from which her strongest metaphors blossom.

It is SO easy to complain about all of the things going on and going wrong with the world right now. And that complaining does what?
It lowers your ability to be aware of, or receptive to, opportunities that may be right in front of you. Complaining might make you feel better… for a moment. And then, it’s almost like you have to do it again.
Instead, there’s another way to approach the world.

We have a problem when a group of people (at work, at home, in the community, in politics) agree that we have a problem. Until one person takes the role of “shepherd” the problem will remain a problem.
You’ll discuss it over and over.
It’ll be the same stuff that comes up.
Until you get an accountable “I” - someone who will take responsibility for engaging others to help fix the problem.
A group of accountable “I” people, that’s when things begin to shift.
Oh, and you can nod agreement. Until you see that this starts with you, WE may still have a problem.
Be the first, be the leader, take charge and make a difference.

Mindset matters more than anything else as it is the filter for everything… EVERYTHING.
From your relationship with your family or partner to your relationship with those at work and even your relationship with Spirit, your mindset allows you to open or shut out possibilities.
And that’s different from a Positive Mental Attitude.
It’s good to have that, and you need to adjust your mindset first.

Oh my gawwwwwwddddd… the whining is unbearable!!!
Wahhh… i can’t do that, I’m not readyyyyyy.
It’s such bulls**t. No one is ever good at something the first time out. You’ve garnered skills in other areas that you’ll apply to whatever it is.
You wobble when you learn to ride a bike. And then, with practice, you get good at it. It’s the forward momentum that keeps you upright.
So that sales call, that coaching program you meant to join, learning French or guitar or both, the things you’ve been putting off… just do them.
It’s not about being ready, it’s about being willing.
Be deliberate.
I am going to do this thing OR I am not going to do this thing.
You can begin before you’re ready because you’re willing to begin.
Be willing and cut the bull around being ready.

What got you here won’t get you there.
It’s an old saying, and did you ever stop to think about that.
What got you here were all of your life’s experiences up to this point.
Now the questions are:
Other questions -
What mindset do you need? What old stories might you need to let go of? How much more worthy do you need to become to have what you want? (Hint: you’re worthy already, so stop thinking it’s beyond you.)
What values might you need to live into?
Mull those over.
Get clear about where you want to be, really want to be in five years.
Look, in five years, you’ll be five years older whether you think about your direction or not. So, get deliberate about your trajectory. This is your life and you get to own it!

We have work to do. Noone wants to hear that and yet the TRUTH is that we need to be paying attention on multiple levels. The first place to start is with ourselves.
I Am Bigger Than My Current Life - that’s the ache that most people feel.
What would happen if you decided that you were actually in charge of your life?
Awareness leads to Choice and Choice leads back to greater Awareness.
It’s the hermeneutic loop that I teach. The more awareness you have, the more choices you have. Keep expanding.
Ask, “what’s available to me now?”
Get clear about the direction you want to head.
Get clear about your outcomes.
Look for the support you might need and be aware of the obstacles you might hit. That will allow you to invoke the choices you do have.
A bigger life does await. And it needs some action steps to move into it.

One of my VIP clients recently asked me how to handle it when, in a social situation, the conversation turned to gossip and rumors about another mutual acquaintance who wasn’t present. He was uncomfortable and wanted to leave. His partner wanted to stay.
What would you do?
Upleveling IS hard. Staying where you are is comfortably uncomfortable.
I’m responsible for what I put into my day.
I’m responsible for what I give and for how I show up.
What is gossip or rumor mongering based on?
Give THAT some thought.
Uplevel.
Check your mindset.
Coming from a space of gratitude and abundance, feeling like you’re enough… that’s easy intellectually, and it’s harder to practice.
Practice.
Just… practice.

I’m a fourth-degree blackbelt in the art of Bushido - The Way of The Warrior.
So many people who start out in the martial arts just want the coveted black belt. They don’t realize that the black belt is simply a symbol of competence, and that it’s also a starting place. It’s the place from which mastery is born.
In leading yourself and others, you need to find a way to dive in deep, to commit to yourself and to invest in yourself. You can only get better when you let go of the ego that throws you a parade for your title or the hard work you’ve done.
You’re not done, nor should you be. Mastery is an ongoing process. Leadership is not a one-and-done thing, it too is a process.
Invest and commit to becoming better.
Stopping because you have status is dangerous and it doesn’t serve anyone. At some point, it’ll bite you in the behind. Recognize that your competition is you, the you of yesterday and that by becoming a better version of yourself today, you’re living into lifting and serving others.
You’re not done. Other people need you. As a leader, you need to show up at your best.
This podcast will give you some further insights about all of this. Enjoy!

Maybe you’re feeling a little overwhelmed right now. That’s normal, but the mountains of “stuff” that you’ve been carrying… you were meant to climb.
You need to be in control of your day, your week, your month, your quarter, and the rest of this year. Do that by looking at all of the “stuff” you’ve tried to carry from day to day. Look at where you’ve been putting your energy and recognize that your priorities are highlighted by where you’ve put your focus.
If something really, really mattered to you, everything else would fall away.
“Oh, I meant to…” is but an excuse.
Chunk up the projects.
Own your calendar.
And jump on the things that you said mattered to you.
These are but a few of the concepts we dive into on today’s podcast.

It’s odd how people are uncomfortable with silence, isn’t it. What’s amazing is that when I work with teams and leaders, people start to squirm just a few seconds into a pause, a void of talking. By nine seconds, usually the leader has jumped in to say something.
That’s so unnecessary. Four seconds is enough to create safety, to show through your body language and your face that you’re listening. When someone makes a statement, acknowledge it, then… just hold space.
For fun, challenge yourself to pause for up to eighteen seconds. Do nothing, no fidgeting, just sit. Count to eighteen in your head very slowly. Notice, just notice what happens when you do that… at four seconds, at nine seconds, and at eighteen seconds.
Most people exhale deeply at eighteen seconds as if they’ve been holding their breath. Breathe normally, get quiet, and notice. Just notice. Create safety for yourself and others by holding space.
And that is how you build your Powerful Presence®, too!

Yes, we all need a reminder - especially at this time of year: there are three “G” words that’ll make your days more powerful, effective, efficient and productive.
G is for Gratitude. Look at what you’ve come through. Look at where you’re headed! Look at the small pebbles that have paved the way, even the ones that have gotten in the way. There is so much to be grateful for. So very much to be grateful for. And living in that space, vs. the space of entitlement or being offended, living in gratitude opens so many doors for you.
G is for Grace. Look at what you’ve come through and don’t assume you know what anyone else is feeling or has come through. Grace is about giving yourself and others the breathing room to take on the next challenge, whether that’s simply getting up in the morning or whether it’s saving the world. Everyone needs a little more Grace.
G is for Generosity. Don’t judge whether someone “needs” something from you or not. Decide how you can make a positive impact. (I’ve been known to leave a $100 tip in hotel rooms. Something tells me that might make a positive impact on the housekeeper.) Where can you make a positive impact? Where might you step up your generosity game?

We’ve stared at the same four walls for the past year and a half. We’ve organized the pantry. We’ve learned to work differently. We’ve extended our work hours and have gotten less done in more time (ahhhh - the new math). We thought we’d become more efficient, but when we check email first thing and then throughout the day and then last thing and then stay up longer as a revenge against work so as to get some “me” time… we’ve put ourselves on a collision course with BURNOUT.
Our roles blended and now everything is at home. Though we’re starting to find our way back into the world, we might also be wondering if it’s worth it.
Three steps to get you back out there and in touch with what matters most:
Start there. That’s how you bring a little joy back into your life.

I’m eating sushi with a client when I ask him what he expects of me the following day as I engage with his team.
“Excellence,” came the one-word, very direct answer.
“Challenge Accepted,” I replied with a smile.
Inside I wondered how to bring him the excellence he expected. What I didn’t know was that he was endorsing me for the excellence he had always experienced in my work with him.
And that got me thinking - If he experienced excellence in my work and I had a sense that I could level up, why couldn’t I just level up that bit more anyway?
What can you do, in any area of your life, to level up just that bit more?

From homeless street kid to Marine Corps Captain to Sage & Mentor - Solarzar works magic in there somewhere, too!
He notes that leadership is all about communication and relationships!
He believes in the continuum of relationships, how the teacher imparts to the scholar and at some point, the scholar offers to the teacher. Solarzar discussed The Hero’s Journey and notes that we’ve all been the reluctant hero, called to take charge. Most pull back multiple times until finally, we draw on the nuggets of knowledge we’ve collected on our path and realize that what we’ve been given along the way will help us to our next breakthrough.
These are magical moments that our path of the leader is paved with.
His other gems to think about:

What’s the difference between being “Nice” and being Kind?
When you’re nice, you’re likely to be giving yourself - a lot of yourself - away. And the cost to that? Personal identity.
Here I share some very personal stories and talk about how to be kind, to live in grace, compassion, and empathy without having to make everything okay for everyone else.
Being kind, sometimes means holding boundaries. That’s not always easy. And, it’s essential for your growth and for your true service to others.

So many people think that they have to join in the conversation and even one-up what’s just been said that they miss the opportunity to truly connect.
“I can’t wait to get to Hawaii”
“Oh, me either! This pandemic is something! I just love the sand on Waikiki and the sun. Oh, and you can’t beat the food.” And on and on and on, leaving the other person out of the conversation.
Beware of hijacking the conversation in an effort to join in. When you make it about yourself, you’ve missed a HUGE opportunity to actually connect.
Take a listen and let me know what you think!

We’re all leaders! If you’re being watched, you’re a leader - at home, at work, in the community. You’re a leader.
This episode doesn’t talk about the traits of good leaders. There are tons of books and articles on that. Each is, in my opinion, simply opinion. The best trait of a leader is someone who knows what he/she/they value and can live into that authentically.
And there are five steps to grow into that:
Expand your MINDSET
Hold yourself and others ACCOUNTABLE.
Be someone who is gracious and generous and lives in GRATITUDE.
Have visions for your future. Demand that of yourself. Let those visions serve to INSPIRE yourself and others.
And be clear. Get great CLARITY around who you are, what your values are, what your vision for your future is. Being clear and specific is the best way to grow that for yourself and others.
That’s magic!

We expect things to be as we left them. This is good news for us when we park a car or lay down our sunglasses. It’s not so great when we’re talking about relationships and noticing the growth in other people.
Whether in your team members, your family members, or your friends, allow for a shift in worldview. What has changed about them since you last saw them?
Most important, start with yourself: reflect on what’s changed in, for, or about you in the last few months, weeks, days, or even moments.
You’re not the same person you were.
It’s important to acknowledge that those we engage with, even daily, aren’t who they were either.
“Hey! What’s changed since I last saw you?”
Stay curious and have fun with that!!!

You have a choice about how much “strength” you give the things that are bothering you. There are, in fact, only three types of trouble
You can choose to let go of - and learn from - each of them!
Troubles of the past -
Did you do the best you could with the knowledge and resources you had? Then stop cringing every time that memory comes up. You’re the only one who is remembering it that way. No one else is carrying the memory the same way. Make amends if you need to and most important, learn from what happened. You’re a different person now!
Troubles of the present -
If you recognize that today is just a snapshot on a timeline continuum, then you can acknowledge that the “today” of two years ago doesn’t really linger. Today’s troubles, two years down the road won’t feel quite as severe. So, do what needs to be done, learn, get the resources you need, and keep moving forward.
Troubles of the Future -
What a beautiful waste of great imagination… we catastrophize, thinking about the outcome being the worst possible scenario when we could be thinking about what it might be like if everything not only worked out okay, but worked out amazingly well!
Whatever trouble you’re carrying, you’re the only person carrying it. It’s your perspective that colors the situation as such. What if… what if you chose a different perspective and knew that things were going to be better than just okay?
They are, you know. Choice is power!

Author, podcaster, tv host, and life coach - Jocelyn talks about the journey of what it takes to Break Down To Wake Up (also the name of her book).
She had a “normal” life and was doing well.
She and her husband decided to make a big life upheaval and move across the county. She got the blessing from her job and off they went, as a family of three.
Something still nagged at her and she began a journey of true self-discovery.
She notes: THE DETOURS IN OUR LIFE LEAD US TO EXACTLY WHERE WE NEED TO BE.
Jocelyn found herself through outside coaching and took the path to become a coach, herself.
In this episode, we talk about her recognizing that she felt trapped in her old life and that she couldn’t breathe.
Here, I note that:
the sense of not being able to breathe isn’t about getting enough air, it’s about being able to exhale enough to express yourself fully.
And Jocelyn adds that we have seemingly grown up with the rules “If I can act in a certain way, I’ll receive love from this other person.”
Spring boarding on this thought, I note that this then, makes the relationship transactional and essentially not safe.

Influenced by his entrepreneurial Marine father and his wife, and loving mother, Alan Kaye learned that relationships - helping others get what they want - was the key to success.
He ended up in insurance, which for most of us doesn’t sound so great. His story, his connections, and his life lessons along the way are phenomenal.
Alan Kaye was an animator, he did marketing for the NY Yankees, his world went into a tailspin with his daughter’s illness (and that led to massive charity work on his part), and then he landed in a space of protecting people. He and his partner Brian built eight offices with a large team where the company culture is like family.

Many parents have felt like selling their kids to the circus or letting the neighbors take care of them for a few minutes, days, or months.
Many employers have felt like pushing the ejector-seat button at meetings and having the “bad” employee launched into space. Somewhere else… anywhere but here.
Neither of those are the “correct” solution to “bad” behavior.
It’s important to remember that the person is not their behavior. You can love a person and not like their behavior.
And that’s the conversation to have - “What you’re doing right now isn’t what’s needed. The behavior you’re showing needs to stop.”
That’s so different from, “why are you being such a brat (or the other b-word)?”
Get the perspective that they’re not doing this TO you. The behavior is coming out as a sign of pain and they need acknowledgment and even to be contained. At work, “this behavior isn’t appropriate” is an okay thing to say.
HR Note: People are moved out of work engagements because their behavior isn’t appropriate. (You can document behavior; you can’t document “a bad attitude.”)
And if it’s you that’s having an “off” day, take note of that too. You can still love yourself and your life and not love that you’re feeling irritable because you ate the wrong thing or slept badly or have some other ache or pain.

Finding the entrepreneurial spirit as a young girl, selling a home-made kite for $3.67, Zahara Joy has gone on to recreate herself living in more countries than most of us visit in our lifetimes.
She worked in high-fashion in New York, moved to Italy, and realized that her calling was to help women live a lifestyle that’s above average.
Having lost everything, Zahara’s perspective is that everything that looks like a disaster can be a blessing. She notes that there are two types of people: those who are average and those who go for it. She sees herself as a role model of the latter and encourages others to do the same.
Zahara coaches women who fear becoming their true selves as she enables them through a holistic approach to what success really is.
Though Z coaches women, this is a MUST LISTEN, even if you’re a guy!

Whether you’re in a relationship with someone or you’re a single who’s just getting through your day, every day, there’s one person who needs you a little more right now.
Personal growth is so important and how you treat yourself determines how you grow. And remember, if you’re not growing, you’re backsliding.
Who needs you the most right now? YOU!
What do you say to yourself when you step on a scale or see yourself in a mirror? What do you think when you get in your car or pay your bills? What language happens in your thought bubbles when you go to work? What are you thinking when you meet up with someone else?
Don’t say anything to yourself about yourself that you wouldn’t say to someone else about them. You’d never tell someone else that they’re too fat, too wrinkly, not smart enough, not wealthy enough… not enough.
What would you tell someone who is working on coming out of a hard time?
The fact is that you’re coming through a tough transition right now.
You Need You
Inspire Greatness in Yourself
Personal growth happens every day. It takes your intentionality and focus.
Investing in growing yourself pays off big time in your business and relationships. And again, the first relationship is with yourself.
What kind of thing can you remind yourself about today?
You ARE enough. And… every day, you’re getting a little bit better!
Be intentional and invest in yourself.
I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing my friend, a former Green Beret and retired Lt. Col., Scott Mann.
Today we spoke about Trust and his program of Rooftop Leadership. How do you lead during times of low trust? People don’t trust political leaders, but worse, people don’t even seem to trust each other.
That’s Leadership.

This time of year, we worry about a lot of things. It doesn’t matter that we’ve come through a heck of a year and that You Are Resilient and that You Are Courageous. Look at the uncertainty you’ve come through, day in and day out over the last nine months. Incredible, right?
So what are we worrying about now?
We worry that we will have enough. We worry that what we give to others will be enough. And we worry that these things are a reflection of who we are as people and we end up questioning whether we are enough.
What a great way to enter the winter holiday season, right? That’s not good for anyone any time of year. And people get into a trap of buying and then over-buying.
So the question here is, what gap are you trying to fill… what void in your life is so gaping that it needs more validation?
Relax… YOU ARE ENOUGH.

Emily Williams, the founder of iHeartMyLife is an exceptional woman who now helps female entrepreneurs identify and realize their dreams.
In this One Sharp Sword™ episode, Emily shares her life trajectory. She had a bad gut reaction on her way to grad school. And, unlike so many, she followed her instinct and paid attention to her feelings.
This led her to a trans-Atlantic journey where she found her husband James.
She notes that you have to “allow yourself to dream.”
And she says that she turned jealousy of other successful women into gratitude for giving her the motivation to step up. Her mindset around money has changed significantly and her mindset around sales has changed, as well.
Emily notes that persistence is a quality she employed to keep going even when things got hard. It does take work to fulfill your dream. Start. Keep going.
Get past fear. Let go of safety. Get beyond “just enough,” and know that abundance is right there. www.iHeartMyLife.com
Fear, doubt, worry, guilt, and shame! Yep! Happy holidays!!!
This time of year is filled with all of that. And, somewhere in there, shines a glimmer of hope. None of that, not even the hope, truly serves you.
The bottom line is this: fear, doubt, worry, guilt, and shame are all paralyzers and lead you closer to death. People say that fear is a negative emotion. Others write that fear is necessary to keep you out of danger. The truth is that fear paralyzes you and doesn’t let you think straight.
That’s not good for your relationships - any of them - at home, at work, or in the community. You need awareness and choice.
As noted in my first book, Choosing Your Power, awareness leads to choice and choice leads to greater awareness. That’s an ever-expanding spiral, not a contracted or incapacitated dot.
And this thing about hope? Oh, it’s good to break through inertia. And, hope is not a plan. It’s not a substitute for a plan. I’ve watched people swing from fear and guilt to hope. It’s like they’re holding onto strands of smoke. And then, on their descent, they confirm what they knew: that they weren’t good enough.
Snap out of it. You ARE good enough.
It’s time to get real clarity and certainty. Will you earn what you desire this year? YES.
How? By being certain of it AND taking the steps needed to get there (a series of small steps gets you to the next level).
Your mindset shift affects how you show up. If you’re in a space of worry, your clients cannot buy from you. If you’re in a space of certainty, your relationships change (at home, at work, and in the world).
See the bright future? Get certain that it’s yours!

NOW more than ever, we need to move beyond kindness. We need to create large ripples that go far beyond our engagement.
And we do that by being conscious. By being deliberate and intentional, we engage with others human-to-human. We lift them in ways that are subtle, yet powerful.
Being deliberate also means taking action. You can’t just think nice thoughts, you must do something… something as simple as looking someone in the eye or smiling from behind the mask.
And when you’re positive, you’re lifting others. You’re intentional about helping others have a good day.
Yes, be kind. Pick up some trash, move a shopping cart, hold the door. And beyond that, step into being Deliberately, Actively, Positively™ uplifting.

Being sucked into drama is a choice.
The stories we have told ourselves, so many of them just aren’t true. We don’t need to play in the land of judgment or the need to be right.
The 2020 pandemic has given us the opportunity (and excuse) not to visit various family members. Well, what choices will you be making when the pandemic resolves?
Do you let the drama of others run (or ruin) your life? That’s a choice, too!
It’s a choice to believe the stories you’re running in your head. It’s a choice to live into your own truth of strength. And it’s a choice to find peace, compassion, and love this season.
Step into the holidays and the New Year by letting go of the drama and engaging with Love and Compassion. It’s there you’ll find your peace.

This is pretty simple to think about but it’s a whole lot harder to practice consistently.
When I work with my elite 1:1 VIP clients, we focus on Values to begin with. Not only what you value now, but what you might need to aim towards to become who you wish to become.
Think about someone you admire. Do they have traits that you don’t yet express? Practice those.
Decide that you want to live into values that you don’t yet have. Get clear.
Clarity is the 1st C
While commitment is a “thing,” it’s not officially the second C. You do need to commit to practicing and expressing the values you now wish to live into.
In fact, it’s the expression of those new values that creates the second C. That’s Communication. It’s one thing to have values. It’s another for people around you to know what you stand for - at home, at work, and in the world.
And the third C is Curiosity. Staying curious and in wonder keeps you out of judgment, right-fighting, and drama.
Stay curious. And step into Compassion.
(Maybe I should call this the 5-C list!)
Rock your holidays and step into the New Year strong!

James Williams is one of the best High-Performance coaches that I know. A longtime friend from the High-Performance community, James and I have been on Facebook Lives together as The Socially Ambitious Chatterboxes. His insights here guide us to new heights!
James reminds us not to believe the expectations that others have for us.
He noted that though he stayed in a job too long, staying shaped who he became and that our history serves us.
He noted that he got “average” because he was focused on average and that his life changed when he focused on more. He stepped into his purpose and began to build his legacy.
Your purpose directs your thoughts.
James challenges us to Live Consciously and notes that doing so can be exhausting. Letting go of judgment is important, especially if you choose to step into the life of the entrepreneur.
Remember that no matter the situation, you always have a choice in how you respond to that situation. Your responsibility is to recognize your response-ability.
Build “the business of me.”

Trying to manage everything can be a struggle. Details slip through. Managing others too tightly can get you the opposite results. In relationships, the same is true.
You’ve got to be able to hold on with slightly open hands to be more flexible. Give the other people room. Give yourself a chance to not have to hold - or manage - everything.
When you hold on too tightly, you’re left with very little. Relax, engage authentically, and offer (offer, not impose) help.

In a time where everyone seems to be drawing back and we might feel like we’re living in “lack” which is only fear-based, it’s still important to have redundancy.
Redundancy, especially in communication, is exceptionally important. In the IT world, having systems that duplicate is important in case one goes down.
What about at work. Do you need people that do the same things? No, but you need people who know about and know how to do the same things.
Like the understudy at a play, you have a backup.
And, in your communications, make sure you’re delivering your message in more than one way.

Is it possible to be happy and dissatisfied at the same time?
Pause your life and look around. There’s a lot of bad stuff happening, and still, you have a lot for which you can be grateful.
If you think about it, your life is okay right now. You are doing okay. You can say that right now, at this moment, you’re happy with your life. AND WE DON’T PAUSE - We know we can Do More, Have More, and Be More! And because we know we can serve more greatly, we feel dissatisfied.
You can live a life of gratitude and still ache to do, have, and be more. Yes, that’s the magic of living Happily Dissatisfied.

Do you have any idea how many people you actually encounter on any given day? It may be zero or it could be hundreds. Are you doing video calls? Did you go to a grocery store? Are you even noticing the people you live with?
I ran a company with 120 team members and my goal was to give just six compliments a day because I had seen people doing things that mattered.
I used six pennies as my tally check, and at the end of the day, the goal was to have moved six pennies from one pocket to the other. Having 120 people that I could potentially encounter, what I found was that I stopped focusing on finding the good.
Leading is about keeping the big picture in front of yourself and those on your team. Focus on the things that matter. Let your team members know they matter by acknowledging them - notice what they’ve done and how they’ve contributed. Keep your focus on what matters - your people and the delivery of service.
The challenge: give six compliments today to people at home, at work, or in the community. It sounds so easy… it takes a lot of practice!

We all have voices in our heads, those not ours, that still follow us.
We’ve been told what to do, wear, eat, and how to be.
I was told that I wasn’t living into my potential and I was laughed at by a teacher in high school who called me ridiculous for thinking I’d ever earn a PhD.
I was told that there are two types of audiences: those that want to see you make a mistake and those who hope you fail.
How horrible that those voices got in and stuck with me. Despite the influencers’ voices, I went on. I made it. I knew there was more for me.
And you know there’s more for you, too. The trick is that you have to start paying attention to the voices that are guiding you. Are They Yours?
Chances are, they’re from some authority that you adopted as your own. And, chances are, those voices really aren’t serving you.
It’s time to let go of realistic and embrace possibility, real possibility.
It’s time to break free from the shoulds and supposed to's and live into a life of being Unreasonable!
Look for Amazon Prime TV’s series SpeakUp!
I’m a featured speaker in Season Two and my segment is all about The Power of Being Unreasonable!

Moving from Influence through Success to true Significance is an art.
It’s a magical journey.
By my definition, an influencer is someone who makes the process about themselves. Whether through Social Media or a person in authority along your path (a parent, a teacher, etc.) you’ve been told things for the sake of fitting in.
I move beyond that to Outfluence™.
An Outfluencer™ is someone who Deliberately, Actively, Positively™ impacts, and uplifts the lives of others.
Success is about getting and having. It’s how you measure your progress. And, it’s not the only measure of progress.
Back to Outfluence™. When you lift others Deliberately, Actively, Positively™, you act in a way that leaves a more lasting legacy. THAT is Significance.
Be Deliberate
Be Active
Be Positive
...in all of your engagement with others.
That’s Significance
And you can get your own copy of the #1 Best Selling Book, The Significance Factor, by going to DynamicLeader.com and downloading it!
Are you lying to yourself about why you’re procrastinating?
Procrastination is the barometer of your commitment.
So how fully are you committed to doing the thing you say you want to do? Think about any challenges you’ve had in the past. The things you’ve followed through on were the ones you had a full commitment to.
Almost doing something isn’t the same as doing it.
Do you see your taxes being filed every year? Yes, because you’re committed to doing them. You don’t always have to like what you’re committed to. You’ll follow through, though.
So what about the things you DO like?
Are you committed to following your dreams? The process will be hard. You will fail along the way. And as long as you’re learning, you’re going to make it happen… IF your commitment is stronger than the obstacles.

So many high-level executives are disillusioned with being “at the top.”
The thing is, if you’re lonely at the top, you’re doing it wrong.
The other thing to remember is that YOU are a leader, no matter where you are in an organization, family, or community. YOU. You’re a model for someone. If you’re around people, you’re being observed.
So, you owe it to yourself to be your best self.
Key points in this episode:
How? Five key things you need to be valuing. Then, leading (and being in the state of leading = leadership) won’t suck.

One Sharp Sword - Cutting Through To What Matters Most with Dr Wayne Pernell is meant to be thought-provoking and inspiring.
This show offers no advice or counsel related to law, finance, or health (either physical or mental). You are listening at your own discretion and interpreting what you hear in your own way. This show is meant for entertainment purposes and no claims of enhancement or enrichment of any sort are indicated or implied. Nope, this show doesn’t promise to make you better looking. But hey… look at you now! Listen in! Enjoy!
Are you sick of being shut in and fed up with the rules, especially the rules that are changing?
You’re not alone. And even with all of the rules, imagine what would happen if all of a sudden it were announced that we could “go back to normal.” There would be chaos!
Most of us have found things we like in the past six months. Personally, my commute is shorter. My trips to the gas station are infrequent. And I get to have lunch with my wife almost every day. That’s something that didn’t happen last year.
None of this is personal - it’s not being done TO YOU; it’s a pandemic and if you look at some of the newspapers from around the world, you’ll see that it really isn’t political.
Here are the key things to remember:
This is not about what you can’t have.
This is about what you can do, have, or be with you do have!

Let’s talk leadership language. You wouldn’t blurt out something horrible about a baby to someone. It’s a curious thing that phrases like, “that’s the worst report I’ve seen” or “what are you thinking” are leaked into organizational conversations.
Be careful, because the organization could be one at home.
The language you use affects yourself and everyone around you.
What language do you use when you look in the mirror?
You wouldn’t let anyone else talk to you that way, so… what kind of subconscious messaging are you giving yourself, your kids, your partner, your teammates?
While cheerleading isn’t necessary, being deliberately uplifting is important. And if there’s a miss, it IS okay to note it.
“We agreed to xyz. That didn’t happen. It’s not here. I need this fixed.”
Whether it’s a report or dishes in the sink, “We agreed to xyz. The condition that I’m seeing is different from what we agreed to. Please fix it.”
The language you use both subconsciously and consciously influences the outcomes you get.
Whether you are looking in a mirror, speaking with a family member, or engaging a team member at work, choose the language of inspiration.
You’ll get better engagement when the positive is personal and the negative goes neutral.

This is simple - the ultimate cost is death. You can’t be all things to all people. If you try, you’ll wear yourself out. We’ve all encountered people that want to make things just right. They’ll annoy the heck out of you to make sure you’re okay. And if that’s you, stop it.
Pick your audience. Know how you’re going to show up in service to that audience, whether through a product or direct offering of service.
Do that thing.
It’s simple, but it’s not always easy. We want to make sure people get what they want.
The thing is, you don’t have to be the one to give it ALL to them.

Five Cs to pay attention to:
Culture - you’re building that through your vision and you’ll catch people doing things right. It’s too easy to notice the stuff that’s out of place for you.
How clear are you about your vision?
How aligned with your vision are your actions?
Creating your culture starts with your clarity about values, creating a values-based vision, and living into and from that.
Catch ‘em - Catch them doing something right! You get more of what you focus on, so whether you’re dealing with a three-year-old or with a team who have ideas about the way things “should” be, when the direction and behavior are aligned with the values and the vision, notice it.
Celebrate - too much time usually passes between the good work and the recognition. People want to be recognized for their contribution. You’ll get more from your team when you celebrate with your team!
Communicate - It’s one thing if YOU know the values and the vision. It’s another for everyone around you to know them too. It gives them an opportunity to step up and step in or, if they’re not aligned, to step away. Communicate what you value.
Consistency - While slot machines payout randomly, leaders need to be consistent. You cannot show up one day espousing the values you believe in and show up another day completely out of alignment with them. That’s not leadership. It builds mistrust and people wait for what will be the next lie rather than evidence of living in integrity. Be consistent. Live in alignment.

Your bottom line is affected by your values, your ability to identify what matters to you and to your business, and to live into those values authentically and in alignment.
You don’t have the same values you did a decade or so ago. Nor should you.
You’ve changed.
The world has changed.
When was the last time you did a values inventory?
When was the last time you let other people know what you value or believe in?
And are you certain that what you’ve claimed as your values are really yours and not someone else’s voice of influence?
You’re different from who you were.
What path do you want to be on?
The path of high performance as a DynamicLeader is one that starts with clarity and certainty.
Get clear about what’s IN and what’s no longer a part of who you are or how you are.
Communicate that through your words AND your actions.
When you get alignment, those around you align with you or the fall away. Either is good.
It’s a powerful path.

Most people are “allergic” to change. They like the idea of being different or having a different lifestyle, but getting there seems so out of reach.
It’s time to get comfortably uncomfortable. Like when you first start a new exercise program - it’s not easy and it might actually not feel all that great. What makes it easier? What happens that it becomes really good?
Three things to do -
First, listen. Listen to the voices in your head. You want something but these other voices compete and tell you that there are other more important things to do. Or, you hear (feel) that you might not be worthy of the end result. Or, you begin to question whether the work is worth it.
The question is whether the outcome is worth it.
Next plan. If you have a plan for gaining more customers (that means reaching out in a way you haven’t before), or shedding some pounds (set out your workout clothes, set an alarm), or whatever you’re after - you need to plan to do it.
And the third step is to practice. Do The Thing and do it again and do it again.
This is where it gets uncomfortable until, at some point, it’s no longer uncomfortable.
Whether you are building your business or growing yourself personally to trans-form is to cross to a new shape. That’s a new shape of your life. And, you’re worth it!

Asa Leveaux is a gentleman who won’t be confined or defined by any role. He’s overcome A LOT while living in Oklahoma. Being a black man in the LGBTQ community hasn’t slowed him down because he only associates with those who would celebrate him, not just tolerate him.
He’s an entrepreneurial coach, the founder of the Oklahoma Black Business Expo, a best-selling author, a podcaster, and so much more.
Asa describes how in following others who are on big stages, he compared himself to them. In doing so, he knew he’d never be like them. “I was never supposed to be like them.” They became lights on his journey to become a light to others, by being himself, not by being anyone else!
He notes that “...to be realistic is to deny your complete self.”
He notes having grown-up short and says he was “too short to be scared.” He just had to step in. Resilience is key.

Happy Mid-Year! Yes, we’re halfway through and you get to acknowledge the gifts that you were given during the first half of the year!
You are resilient - the rules kept changing and you hung in
As a result, you built greater resilience AND courage! Think about how ready you are to take on “things unknown.” You’re different from who you were at this point last year. You’re stronger!
2020 wasn’t done TO you.
It’s not personal.
But what if it were personal? And what if it was done FOR you, not TO you?
Look at your gains. Look ahead to the rest of the year.
You get to decide what you value and how to put more of that in your life.
You get to decide what your days look like.
You get to decide how to stay focused and when to break.
YOU GET TO…!

Most leaders like to think they have everything under control and when they don’t, they pull in the reins, tightening the control, which often leads to more out-of-control-ness.

We’ve come to a place where we’re not sure that what we’re doing matters. Does it make a difference if you go into work, shower for the zoom call, or even greet a teammate since it’s remote?
We feel remote and that’s a problem. We simply feel disconnected.
When we’re not connected with our work or the people who are affected by our work, nothing really matters. As good humans, we want to know that our work is meaningful and that our contributions are valued.
The first person to give meaning to your work is YOU. The next person is the leadership at your work. And if you’re the leader, then call on your executive team - “does this even matter?”
And, be sure that they know that their work matters to you.
This goes for your family and friends as well: Hey, thank you. That conversation meant a lot. I really appreciate it.
Again, the concept is simple while the practice isn’t always easy.
Go make your meaning and be deliberate about uplifting someone today!
