Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project works to protect and enhance seabird populations and habitats here in Maui Nui, and there are so many good stories to tell about it, we started a podcast. With a focus on the conservation of biocultural resources, we'll try to cover everything from the mountains to the sea, just like nā manu kai -- the seabirds of Maui Nui. Mahalo for listening.

In this episode the Maui Nui Seabird Project talks about the impacts of cats on the island of Maui. We discuss the nature of toxoplasmosis, how cats effect the native wildlife, and what are the best solutions for cats, communities, and island ecosystems. We are joined by Kenesa Duncan Seraphin from Hawaiʻi SeaGrants Voice of the Sea, Dr. Stephen Shuster from Northern Arizona University, and Darlene Rayhill from the Good Cat Network (https://goodcatnetwork.org/).

Martin Interviews MNSRP staff members Karla Trigueros, Cecelia Frisinger, and Fern Duvall about the phenomenon known as fallout. Light distraction of the birds is discussed, as are the topics of recovering downed birds, and what listeners can do to help. In the first episode, Jay Penniman describes how Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project got started in 2006. He tells us about the threats facing seabirds, and what MNSRP has been doing to address them. We identify the need for a dark night time sky in Maui County.
