"Jehovah will give it into the hand of the king." (1 Kings 22:12) Enlightenment is a vital element to understanding the Word. The story of Micah's prophecies shows us what happens when we try to understand the internal sense. How do we know we aren't just seeing what we want to see? What does it look like to earnestly draw doctrine from the Word?

The Hebrew word for "dragon" is translated in different ways when it is used in different parts of the Old and New Testaments. Sometimes its a "serpent" and in the story of Jonah its a "great fish." In this sermon we'll be looking at some of these stories to see the different way the "dragon" tries to interfere with our spiritual growth and the health of the church.

We all go through seasons of life where we search for meaning and guidance. We can picture the kind of life we want, but we aren't sure how to get there. When Elijah is sent to visit a widow in 1 Kings 17, he asks her for something that she isn't sure she can give. In their interaction, we find the answer to what we can do when we aren't sure what path we should take.

When Jesus rode into Jerusalem some people recognised Him as the Messiah, other people didn't know who He was, and other people strongly rejected the idea that He was the Messiah. We hope that we would have been among those who saw Him as the Messiah but, a few chapters later, the Lord warns people not to be fooled by people pretending to be the Messiah. Can we tell the difference between the Lord and people pretending to be the Lord?

Week 3 in the series "What would love do?"

The parable of the Good Samaritan stands as a hallmark story of going above and beyond to care for someone in need. Bishop Buss explores the things the Lord gives us that enable us to help, namely ideas, love and ability. He also considers attitudes and actions that stand in the way of our helping, that we can work on with the Lord's help. Copyright music not included.

The beginning of a new year is a time that encourages people to think of the poast year and reflect on the new year beginning. Most of us would acknowledge that the last nearly ten months have been far from easy for many of us. What would the Lord like us to take away from these experiences? How can they serve the Lord's goals for our lives now and on to eternity?

Intentions matter more than actions. In other words, someone who is good hearted but makes mistakes is better off than someone who is malicious even while doing the right thing. Yet even the most well-intentioned person can cause harm. Their good intentions do not negate the damage they can cause in ignorance. Rather than justifying ourselves or others by saying, "they meant well," we must find ways of addressing the harm and correcting it, even as we support and acknowledge the good intentions lying behind it.

Description: The New Church offers a unique view of marriage that is inseparably tied in with the life of the church and its teachings . By definition, because of its origin, and from the nature of its love, the New Church vision of marriage is different from the way marriage and its love is defined in our culture today. That unique view invites a different approach to attaining that love. It also promises a love that is eternal in nature and is in its essence heavenly. It is truly a most precious gift from the Lord alone.

And as we sing to the Lord, He can bring us closer together in charity and mutual love.

One of the central teachings of the New Church is that the Word has a deeper, spiritual meaning. This meaning runs through every story, every phrase, and even every word. This Sunday we'll talk about this deeper spiritual sense, and why it was revealed only hundreds of years after the Word was written, and the role it plays in the establishment of the New Church.

This week we continue with the them of the essentials of the New Church, in other words, the core ideas that define what the New Church actually is. Last week we looked at a unique view of God. This week our focus is on life. In the New Church one of the central teachings is that we must follow the Lord’s teachings, and it is only through this that we can receive salvation and eternal life. In the book of Revelation we see images of what it means to truly live what we believe and fight mightily to put it into practice.

Our sermon series for New Church Day is going to be three parts. What's new about the New Church? We're going to look at what's new about an idea of the Lord, what's new about how you live your life, what's new about an understanding of the Lord's Word. The first one about the Lord, which we're going to do this Sunday, is going to be all about the oneness of God. How, when we look at the Lord Jesus Christ, we're seeing the fullness of God. We're seeing the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, all of it together in this one person who we can go to, relate to, have a relationship with, learn from, and worship.

Sermon of the Week - New Church Audio

We are living in an unsettling time. Emotions are high, opinions stronger than ever, and charity wanes. We can think we are right and others are blind. But all of us are blind to some degree, from ignorance and from evil. But the key to seeing is the same - to allow the Lord to heal us with His strong truth and call to repentance, to open our eyes, even to the point that we not only see the truth about life, but our sight is opened to the Lord himself.

However, there was an interesting similarity in almost every response. The one commandment that was almost universally forgotten was the Commandment to Remember the Sabbath. On Sunday, we will explore this Commandment and what it means to keep the Sabbath.

Preach to Nineveh by Rev. Chris Barber Worship Service: Family (may include music) - 5 Jul, 2020

Each new year that comes around completes a cycle of time. The passing of time can highlight a feeling that life is repetitious and that we haven’t gained any spiritual ground since the last cycle of time that came and went. However, the Lord is preparing us, slowly filling the empty places in our spirits until they are full. A completed cycle is symbolic of what our Teachings call a “fullness of state” – that moment in which we have been aptly prepared for our continued spiritual journeys, and that moment when, in humility, we are ready to let the Lord in.

“The Little Things” In Micah’s prophesy, Bethlehem is identified as the birthplace of the Messiah. The emphasis placed on this town is its smallness, its seeming insignificance, and yet out of Bethlehem will “come a Ruler who will shepherd My people Israel” (5:2). This description of the Lord’s birthplace contains deep spiritual significance and foretells a spiritual virtue we all need which, in the eyes of the world, seems insignificant and unremarkable but which, in reality, is “the little thing” that counts the most.

The Lord's birth marks the beginning of a process often called "glorification." Essentially, it unveils the genuine identity of the Lord – Human. This revelation echoes through prophetic voices, as seen in Isaiah 9: "For to us, a child is born... And he will be called... Mighty God...." The process of understanding God's true nature unfolds through foreshadowing prophecy, followed by the profound experience of witnessing His infancy. Come and see!

What is the most unique thing about the New Church? Maybe the teachings on marriage? Maybe the view of the afterlife? These are certainly distinct teachings, but other religions believe in an afterlife, even if the details are different. Other religions have wisdom to share about marriage, even if the specifics are diverse. No, the most distinct difference in the New Church is that we teach that the Second Coming not only will happen, but has already happened.

By Rev. Pearse Frazier. Recorded at Bryn Athyn Cathedral on May 14, 2023.

At the crucifixion, Jesus gave charge of His mother Mary to the disciple John. And this reflects the invitation the Lord offers to us all. The Lord forms the church in our hearts. In as much as we love the truth, our neighbor, and the Lord, the church grows within us. Yes, the church has structure from the doctrines the Lord has given us through His Word. Yes, there is a natural organization of people who share the values of those teachings. But it is all from the Lord's love, and it is from that love that the church finds life.

A number of people in Scripture had the opportunity to see God. Moses saw Him. So did some of the prophets. And of course the Lord's own disciples saw Him when He walked on earth. This is what the Word of God is for: it is the way we come to see and know our God. How is this working out for us? Do we see and know our God from His Word? Is it making a difference in our lives? Let's look at some of the ways the Lord is revealing Himself to us.

The role of the prophets was to communicate God’s messages to the people. They did that by speaking and writing but also by embodying the message they were communicating in one way or another. The prophet Ezekiel was often commanded to do some rather weird things to embody the messages he was communicating. Here we try to understand why he did these things and what that can reveal to us about why Jesus did the things that He did as the Word made flesh who dwelt among us.

We continue to look at how the Old Testament prophets reflect the life of Jesus. Jeremiah lived in a time when impending invasion and doom hung over the people of Israel, and yet the prophets promised peace and prosperity. Jeremiah's role was to proclaim the reality that things would get worse before they got better unless they changed their ways. This seemingly pessimistic message echoed the spiritual message that Jesus brought hundreds of years later: this time a spiritual doom threatened, and Jesus urgently pushed people to repentance lest they be overcome by sin.

The teachings of the New Church say that the whole of the Word relates to the Lord Jesus Christ and what He went through while on Earth. And so we’ve done sermon series in the past on finding Jesus in the life of Abraham, Joshua, and Elisha. This time we’re going to focus on three of the major prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. This will be a chance to learn a bit about these prophets, about what the Lord went through on Earth, and about the role of a prophet in difficult times.

One of the biggest challenges in life is learning how to interpret setback and disappointment. How we deal with loss and defeat, and how we view underlying causes, will do a lot to reshape our future. The Lord's Word records a number of incidents and events in which people expect one thing but are shown something quite different. Most of us don't like surprises but in the case of the Lord's surprises, these are often just what we need.

Sometimes we think fondly back on the simplicity of childhood. Our biggest concerns seem small in comparison to what we face as adults. It’s a pity we cannot go back to that simple mind-set of trust and innocence. Or at least, that’s what a cynical world tells us. But the Lord offers hope in the face of pessimism. Even though we may have exchanged childish idealism for adult realism, that does not mean we can never go back. In fact the Lord promises that we can regain our innocence and find abundant hope even in a troubled world. It’s not too late.

Friendships don't just fall on our laps. They require work and a commitment to honesty and integrity if we wish to have meaningful ones. The quality of a friendship is dependent upon our willingness to grow and mature spiritually. Perhaps the clearest command that the Lord gives us in regards to evil-doers is that we ought to forgive them. This command is one of the hardest commands to follow and it is crucial for our spiritual well-being. Yet if forgiveness is our only response to evil then we miss the bigger picture. This time we'll be exploring a difficult story—the story of Abraham bargaining with God and asking Him if He will still destroy Sodom and Gomorrah if even just a few good people are there. What can the life of a man, dead now for thousands of years, teach us about our God? The story of Abraham, called to leave his home, tasked with producing a new nation, a people for God, may seem a distant fable. Jesus was a spiritual leader, who came to the Jordan River to be baptized and begin His ministry of love and repentance. Yet these two stories, so different on the surface, are the same story. This Sunday we will explore what Joshua crossing the Jordan can tell us about Jesus and His ministry.

People have been drawing parallels between the stories of Joshua and Jesus for a long time (which makes sense considering that Jesus is the Greek version of the name Joshua). But the teachings of the New Church indicate that the connections between the stories go much deeper than a shared name and some intriguing similarities. Every detail of the story can be read as a way for us to get a deeper understanding of the Lord's experience while He was on earth. We explore the early stories of Joshua, before he became the leader of the Children of Israel, and what those stories can show us about the life of the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the challenges that we face, and that many of us are facing right now, it is important that we continually go back to the Lord. Spiritual life does not just happen: it takes intentional and persistent work, work that goes on even when life is at its hardest.

At the deepest level, the stories in the Bible are about the Lord and what He went through while He was in this world. We are going to be looking for connections to the life of Jesus in the dramatic and sometimes quite confusing stories of the prophet Elisha. In this first part we will be looking at the relationship between Elijah and Elisha and exploring how the Lord in the Word made flesh can help us with our real problems and challenges.

By Rev. Grant Odhner. Recorded at Bryn Athyn Cathedral on March 22, 2020. So much of life is out of our control. We can feel helpless in the face of that. The Lord experienced similar circumstances when He was in the world. Before He was glorified, His conscious awareness was bound by limits, just as ours, so that He could be attacked by hell. In these moments, He was able to overcome because He could draw on an inner power that was His own. We are indeed powerless in such moments; but the Human God is with us. Can we trust in him?

This week we continue to explore the teachings of the New Church and what they can mean for us. One of the more unusual aspects of these works is the descriptions of conversations with spirits and angels and the surroundings in which they took place. Swedenborg did not just share ideas, but also the things that the Lord allowed him to see, hear, and feel. Although unusual, what can these experiences teach us about heavenly life that mere ideas could not?

People are often intimidated to try reading Emanuel Swedenborg’s books. He wrote a lot of books and they get into some pretty deep and complex topics. And yet in his own words, these books are "the coming of the Lord." So how do we approach these books in a way that moves beyond philosophy and enters into a real, living relationship with the Lord?

The Lord on earth gave a lot of attention to loving our enemies and New Church teaching confirms that it is vital for our spiritual health. Yet it's one of the hardest commandments to follow. What does the Lord actually expect of us, and how do we go about loving our enemies in a way that is healthy, not papering over what is wrong or being overly harsh?

What's going to happen in the future of the New Church? What are things going to look like in the next 50 years or the next 1000 years? Will there be a need for another new church? This Sunday, as we celebrate the founding of the New Church 250 years ago, we will try to get a picture of the future of the New Church and an understand of what our role is right now.

The New Church teaches that the Apocalypse has already taken place: in fact, it took place over 250 years ago, as the New Church was being born into the world. Understanding the spiritual events from that time period can help us better understand the world we live in today. Last week, Malcolm talked about how the mere existence of the New Church did not automatically make people better: even New Church people have, and still can, support abhorrent practices. This week we will talk about the difference the New Church does make, and why it matters that a New Church was established and continues to exist.

Things in the world these days can seem rather apocalyptic. Intriguingly the teachings of the New Church say that the apocalypse has already happened, over 250 years ago in fact. What does that mean for us today? How can that larger narrative help us to understand what's going on in the world at the moment?

If I asked you, "Do you have any enemies?" you would probably answer, "No." I think most people don't think that they have any enemies. So does the Lord's revolutionary command to love our enemies not really apply to most of us? Well, we all have people that we treat as enemies and we need to recognise that fact. And then we need to learn what it means to love them and then do it.

God made the human mind to function like the ark of Noah during the floods of our lives.

In this sermon series we’ve talked about how the Lord is working in every little detail of what happens in our lives. That can be a profoundly comforting thought but, in other moods, it can make us feel like it doesn’t matter what we do. If it’s all in God’s control, then our decisions mean nothing, really. In other moods, it can feel like God is just some distant force (if He’s there at all) and it’s entirely up to us to figure out what we need to do with our lives and what God is doing or not doing is largely irrelevant to our daily lives. The teachings of the New Church provide another option for how to understand this.

This week we continue our series on misconceptions about Divine Providence. There are moments when something so unlikely and unexpected, and yet so wonderful, occurs, that we cannot help but see it as the hand of God at work in the world. But if God intervenes so forcefully in the world sometimes, it serves to highlight the many times when He does not (apparently) intervene. Why is one person miraculously spared from cancer, while thousands of others are condemned to die? The truth is that God’s Providence is not just at work in the unlikely and the obvious ways we see. His Providence extends to each and every moment of our lives, even down to the most mundane. He is never absent.

Part 1 of 3

A sermon series on misconceptions about Divine Providence. Often when something difficult happens we want to know why—why did this happen? Sometimes the answer that people come to is that “it was meant to be”. But is that true? What does that even mean? How should we think about all the different things that happen in our lives?
