Three words can have a tremendous impact on our ability to keep going. As a change-maker, very few people in your circle truly understand what it takes to do the work you do and be who you be. I hope you feel seen and the words shared here will recharge your soul for the spiritual ride we are embarking on in 2023.

Today is a short episode with a very special guest - my 7-year old nephew Jack. We got to sit down during my visit to Ontario to chat about life and kindness. Jack's stories reminded me of the beauty of simplicity and being in the present moment. If you need a reminder to breathe and appreciate the simple things in life, take a moment to soak in this heart-warming episode.
Note: I used my travel mics to record this and it's a bit scratchy in places. We'll be back to better sound quality in a few weeks.

Ever heard the phrase “When you are pointing a finger at another, there are three fingers pointing back at you”? I heard it three times this week which inspired today’s episode on one of the most powerful lessons I have ever learned in my change-making efforts. Today, we claim what we are projecting or seeing in the world so we can truly be free and stand in our power to be the change. This is big work my friend, and I know you’ve got this.

Today we are talking about a difficult topic: domestic violence and you may find some of the stories disturbing. If this will be traumatizing for you then you may not want to take this episode in or skip to the halfway mark (21:00). Her website has many thoughtful resources on domestic violence if you or someone you know wants to learn more about the patterns that show up in abusive relationships.
Donna Wayles’ story is a reminder that change starts from within and it happens every day in every interaction we have with others. This story shows us that our trauma can be a healing force for others if we are courageous enough to share our stories and heal together. The more I do these shows the more I think that is the most powerful form of being the change. It’s not about the big acts. It’s about the vulnerability we show day to day in service to others.
What’s in this episode for you:
Who’s in Circle With Us:
Donna Wayles is a wife, mom, technology teacher, and domestic abuse survivor and subject expert. Her book “I’ll Pray For You” is a must-read on marital abuse as told by the victim - says an Amazon Review. She is sharing her story of surviving domestic violence to be a beacon of hope.

What does it mean to be kind? In today’s episode, we’re going to explore that question, its importance, some of the myths surrounding it and see if we can’t bring a little more of this into our lives on a daily basis. As we will hear, kindness is essential on the journey of being a change-maker, because it gives us incredible power to take off our colonial coats and create change every day.
What’s in this episode for you:
Tools for change:
I know you’re full of kindness for others, but what about you?
Today, find ways to be kind to yourself. How can you be friendly, generous and considerate? I.e. loving, giving back more than is given away, and thoughtful in your approach to yourself?
Post-episode reflections: After recording this episode I looked into the mirror and told myself “I love you.” Whoa! It was a tear-dropping moment. We all need that kind of love and we can give it to ourselves in 5 seconds. Give it a try!
Today, we cover two big topics - transformation through grief and bringing your dreams to life in soul-nourishing ways. The two are highly interconnected. We are joined by Malaine Leah Butler, a transformational business coach who has a knack for clear communication that you can relate to and laugh about. Her powerful stories give all of us permission to buck normative ways of being in the world to be alive now. What’s in this episode for you:

Listening to all the fabulous thought-leaders at the Sweet Spot Global Leadership summit this week has inspired me to reflect on how much courage is required to be a leader today. We are literally transforming the paradigm, the systems that have been around us for our entire lives and generations before.
That is why, in this episode, I am delving into the topic of stretching our comfort zones and changing our relationships with that process. In particular the fear of failure that generally keeps us inside our comfort zones or makes stretching out really uncomfortable.

Poem: Starlings in winter by Mary Oliver
Chunky and noisy,
but with stars in their black feathers,
they spring from the telephone wire
and instantly
they are acrobats
in the freezing wind.
And now, in the theater of air,
they swing over buildings,
dipping and rising;
they float like one stippled star
that opens,
becomes for a moment fragmented,
then closes again;
and you watch
and you try
but you simply can't imagine
how they do it
with no articulated instruction, no pause,
only the silent confirmation
that they are this notable thing,
this wheel of many parts, that can rise and spin
over and over again,
full of gorgeous life.
Ah, world, what lessons you prepare for us,
even in the leafless winter,
even in the ashy city.
I am thinking now
of grief, and of getting past it;
I feel my boots
trying to leave the ground,
I feel my heart
pumping hard. I want
to think again of dangerous and noble things.
I want to be light and frolicsome.
I want to be improbable

Today is a very significant day in Canadian history. It marks the 1st National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In this episode I gently remind us through story telling what happens when we let fear determine our actions and provide you with actions and questions that contribute to a different way of being. Today is a reminder of how important it is to take responsibility for being the change we want to see.
What’s in this episode for you:
Quote: An excerpt from Embers by Richard Wagamese
It’s all about opening, really. When I open myself to the world and its possibilities - even its hurts - I become whole. But when I choose to close, my life becomes fraught with struggle. Everything I do becomes about shielding myself rather than inviting good energy to fill me. Everything is energy, so I try to let the negative pass through me, rather than holding onto it.
Tools for change:
If you have some people you feel you can deepen this discussion with, here are a few questions you can explore in a curious and heart-felt conversation :

Poem: Richard Wagamese, from Embers
I no longer want to be resilient, I don't want to simply bounce back from things that hurt me or cause me pain. Bouncing back means returning to where I stood before. Instead, I want to go beyond the hurts and the darkness. The first step toward genuine healing from my mental illness was when I came to trust and belief that there was a beyond. Now I reach for beyond every day in every encounter, in every circumstance. I seek to go where I have never traveled. I wake with the vision of a purposeful day filled with adventures and teachings, then I take the first step and try to make it beyond.

Poem: Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.
Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.
Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.

As we evolve as people and cultures our language also evolves. In today’s episode I explore how the language we use can either heal or harm ourselves and others and encourage all of us to start paying attention to the words that we use. When we do that we can proactively create a loving and caring world in an instant.

Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it.

In today’s circle, we are sitting with Maureen Kures and talking about one of the most courageous and important topics, death. That may seem strange for a podcast about being the change - but is it? I personally think this conversation is essential for living our lives and giving ourselves fully. Maureen will share powerful stories about her experience working as a nurse and the wisdom she gained about the beauty of the end of life and why it’s important to talk about it now.
What’s in this episode for you:
Poem: “Death” by Joe Brainard.
Death is a funny thing. Most people are afraid of it and yet they don’t even know what it is. Perhaps we can clear this up. What is death? Death is it. That’s it. Finished. Finnito. Over and out. No more. Death is many different things to many different people. I think it is safe to say however that most people don't like it. Why? Because they’re afraid of it. Why are they afraid of it? Because they don't understand it. I think that the best way to understand death is to think about it a lot, try to come to terms with it, try to really understand it. Give it a chance.
Sometimes it helps if we can try to visualize things. Try to visualize for example someone sneaking up behind your back and hitting you over the head with a giant hammer. Some people prefer to think of death as a more spiritual thing, when the soul somehow separates itself from the mess and goes on living forever somewhere else. Heaven and hell being the most traditional choices. Death has a very black reputation. But actually, to die is a perfectly normal thing to do. It's so wholesome. Being a very important part of nature's big picture. Trees die, don’t they? And flowers. I think it's always nice to know that you're not alone even in death.
Let's think about ants for a minute. Millions of ants die every day and do we care? No. And I'm sure that ants feel the same way about us. But suppose— just suppose that we didn't have to die. That wouldn’t be so great either. If a 90-year-old man can hardly stand up. Can you imagine what it would be like to be a 500-year-old man? Another comforting thought about death is that 80 years or so after you die, nobody who knew you will still be alive to miss you. And after you're dead, you won't even know it.

Poem: An excerpt from “How to Eat” by Thich Nhat Hanh, called, Eating Mindfully As a Practice:
When we eat our meal, we should show up for that meal 100%. Eating mindfully is a practice. If we choose to drink a cup of tea in mindfulness, the pleasure of drinking tea will more than double, because we are truly there, and the tea is also truly there. Life is real. It's not a dream when mindfulness is there.

In today’s circle we are talking all things leadership. You are going to hear the stories of three women who I deeply admire. Math'ieya Alatini, Jennifer England and Stephani McCallum are trailblazers in the world of leadership, deeply rooted in community, exploring the edges, and bravely stepping into conversations that are needed to reduce inequities, resolve systemic racism and bring reconciliation to life.
These three women, separately, and together are leading from their hearts to make the world a better place and I am honoured to bring their stories to you.
What’s in this episode for you:
Poem: Excerpt from Mark Nepo's book, Facing the Lion, Being the Lion:
The word courage comes from the Latin core, which literally means heart. The original use of the word courage means to stand by one's core. This is a striking concept that reinforces the belief, found in almost all traditions, that living from the center is what enables us to face whatever life has to offer. How do we find our way to our core to stand by our core, and to then sustain the practice of living from our core? To live out of our courage, thinking about courage in this way opens us to an array of small and constant efforts that no one ever sees, but which have changed the world.
The courage to face ourselves, each other, and the unknown, the courage to see, to feel, to accept, to heal, to be, efforts of this nature often go unnoticed and unrecognized, like the courage to break the life-draining patterns, and let the story of our lives unfold. To stand by one's core, and to persevere through the doorway of nothing into the realm of everything, like the courage to choose aliveness over woundedness, to remember what matters when we forget, and to build on the past instead of hiding it. Like the courage to choose compassion over judgment, and love over fear to withstand the tension of opposites, and to give up what no longer works in order to stay close to what is sacred. In this courage, is an applied art of spirit. It is not something we can manipulate, but only live into.

This conversation was recorded before the May 29th news release that 215 Indigenous children were discovered buried outside the old Kamloops Residential School. This school is located on Sunny’s traditional territory. This tragic reminder of Canada’s past and present racist policies is a wake-up call and a call to action. For many Canadians, this is the first they have learned of the shocking practices of our country and the church. I hope this conversation furthers your learning and inspires you to learn more. Thank you for your courage to be here and listen.
What is reconciliation? I can’t think of a better time to ask this question and listen for the answers. In this circle, we are joined by Sunny LeBourdais of the Pellt’iqt te Secwepemc Nation and Qwastanaya (L.Maynard Harry) of the Tla’amin Nation to hear the stories of their communities, the brave leadership work they are doing, and the hopes for the future.
What I have learned about reconciliation is that it must start with the truth. In this conversation, you will hear the truth in very clear and direct ways. This experience is both an education and a call to action. Please take care of yourself as you listen in, and know that by letting these words soak in and change you, you can make a difference.

Poem: Excerpt from Embers, by Richard Wagamese:
Unity cannot exist when exclusion is allowed to occur. I was graced with this teaching years ago, when I was working as a traditional elder’s helper. The teaching was given in the context of the sacred pipe, but its intention was to help me understand community. What brings us together cannot exist in the same time and place as what keeps us apart. You. Me. Everyone. My choice is to be aware of our similarities: our yearning for truth, peace, love, belonging, welcome, grace, mercy, a god of our own understanding and at least one moment of real contact at the heart of every day. Seeing that, I am made more, included, extended and in harmony…until that moment when I no longer see.

Qwastånayå (L. Maynard Harry) is a former Chief Councillor of Tla'amin Nation, where he served 4 terms as councilor. He is the Manager of, Aboriginal Rights and Title Department for the Tla'amin Nation and a partner with Advanced Business Match. Maynard is also a student bag-piper.

Sunny LeBourdais is a member of the Pellt’iqt te Secwepemc Nation (Whispering Pines/Clinton Band of the Shuswap Nation). She believes our greatest strength comes from helping each other, as declared by the Chiefs of the Interior to Sir Wilfrid Laurier in 1910: “These people wish to be partners with us in our country . . . we will help each other to be great and good.” Sunny has managed and coordinated businesses and projects for the Okanagan, Ktunaxa, and Secwepemc Nations. She facilitates community-based development of strategies and decision-making processes that respect the inherent responsibility to manage activities on traditional territories. She is currently the Director of Transformation for the Qwelmínte Secwepemc Government to Government LOC where she strives to effect change through the development of collaborative inter-jurisdictional processes that give due recognition to Secwepemc laws, traditions, customs and land tenure systems.

What’s in this episode for you:
Poem: Excerpt from One Drum, by Richard Wagamese:
It begins as all things do with stories. When our ancestors gathered around their tribal fires, stories were told.
As a human family we have tradition in common. Many have forgotten their beginnings, but next time you're out with people, and it is a summer night, and a campfire is lit. Watch how everybody responds to it.
As night falls and the flames climb higher people, regardless of their cultural background, will lean in toward the flame. Some will cup their chin in their hand others will lean forward with their elbows on their knees. Still others might lean back in their chair and idle there, never taking their eyes off the fire.
A pervasive quiet descends, and soon there is only the crackle of the fire, the snap of the logs. Everyone breathes more deeply. Everyone relaxes.
This scenario happens everywhere around the world. When people gather in a circle around a fire in the night. I believe it is because we all carry a specific cellular memory based on the spiritual feeling of togetherness, safety, and belonging. It is the basis of our human identity, community, and it is formed in all of us, a long, long time ago.
There is a particular magic that exists when the world is reduced to a flame, and the sound of a human voice is talking. We all respond to that setting like children, wrapped with wonder and entranced by the possibility of story.
