The Filter Koffee Podcast: Recent Episodes

IVM Podcasts

The Filter Koffee podcast is not an interview. It is a window into the minds of the most interesting people that the host has met. A peek into their craft, passions and convictions. Mostly, it is a conversation. The kind that leaves you richer. The kind that only coffee can bring out.

Karthik Nagarajan likes his coffee strong, just like his conversations. This cryptographer turned researcher turned screen writer turned marketer, sits down with creators, activists, business leaders, and the occasional neighbour for an unstructured chat.

The only thing filtered on this podcast is the coffee.

The Filter Koffee Podcast with Karthik Nagarajan - Episodes out every Wednesday, starting 16th January.

In this episode, Karthik speaks to Rohan Alva - Supreme Court counsel and Harvard Law alumni, about his book 'Liberty after Freedom - A History of Article 21, Due process and the Constitution of India'. Rohan's book is a meticulously researched work on the arduous journey of Article 21 through years of debate within the constituent assembly to its present form as we see it in the Indian Constitution. Rohan talks about how this article, which is all of 18 words long is the fulcrum on which all our liberty is based. He speaks to Karthik about the two divergent views that the constituent assembly had on the subject - both with the greatest of intentions but differing on whether the phrase 'due process of law' should be included or not. And how the eventual absence of it would have a huge impact on how the constitution was interpreted for decades to come. Rohan discusses in detail the intense debates within the room over half a decade, the key protagonists who drove both sides of the argument, and the history of how the constitution itself was framed over these years. He also talks about the aspects that make the Indian constitution itself so powerful and so unique compared to anything else in the World. Here is the link to his book: https://www.amazon.in/Liberty-After-Freedom-History-Constitution/dp/9354893058

Kerala has been in the news a lot recently, mostly in a positive way. The state has always had a unique culture that seeps into everything from its approach to nature, health, women, families and most importantly, society.

Kerala was also in the news recently because of the verdict on the Padmanabhasaamy temple, where the Supreme Court overruled an earlier Kerala high court verdict and gave control of the temple and its treasures back to the royal family of Travancore.

In this episode, the host speaks to Manu Pillai, author of the book 'The Ivory Throne', originally published in 2016 by harper collins, which documents the history of the royal families of Travancore.
