Global Fiber Processing is processing hemp fiber in Colorado. Melissa Petterson was in Michigan last week for the Essen Atlas hemp field day. We will learn about the developing market and how Michigan could play a role. Kim Croes started her hempcrete company, FiberFort, in Detroit, Michigan with the hopes of making a positive impact on the earth. Currently a painter, she is making her transition into natural building practices. Kim started her training and education of hempcrete in January 2021 and is now certified for spray and hand-cast application by the companies Hempitecture and Americhanvre. FiberFort is set to start the first hempcrete house this July in Chelsea, Michigan. Alex Escher is the Director of Hemp Fiber Applications at Escher Design, Regional Leader of the US Hemp Building Association (USHBA), Founder of Hemp Hollow Processing, and member of ASTM D37.07. An entrepreneur with a keen eye for disruptive industries, he joined the Vermont-based architecture firm, Escher Design, to help develop cost-effective applications using hemp bio-composites. In 2017, the firm went on to build the first permitted hempcrete structure in Denver, Colorado. Currently, the firm has numerous hemp-based projects in several states including Vermont, Colorado, Missouri and New York. With the USHBA, Alex serves on the supply chain, certification, and education committees.

Hana Gabrielová and Robin Destiche of KonopiUS will join us this week. Hana Gabrielová is a 20-year veteran within the hemp industry. In 2010 she founded Hempoint in Europe. Hempoint is involved in many parts of the supply chain – planting seed distribution, farming, harvesting, processing, manufacturing, and sales. In 2021 Hana co-founded konopiUS in the US. konopiUS distributes EU and OECD certified industrial hemp varieties to North American farmers. Hana provides invaluable experience and agronomic experience for the konopiUS team.
Robin is one of the co-founders of konopiUS which has locations in North Carolina and Tennessee. konopiUS distributes EU-certified industrial hemp varieties for fiber and grain. This year konopiUS sent farming seeds to 25 states and is working with a number of universities on research studies.

Tonya Mora is a lifelong resident of Michigan other than her time spent in the United States Navy where she worked with the military police as well as taught sailing skills to midshipmen at the Naval Academy. After her honorable discharge, she attained the position of Corrections Officer with the Michigan State Department of Corrections. Upon leaving her state position in 2011 she developed an interest in essential oils through the loss of a friend’s mother and the inheritance of her books regarding this subject. This was near the same time in which Ms.
Mora had begun working behind the scenes in the medical marijuana industry trimming plants, learning more about organic growing and the therapeutic benefits of cannabis oils. She began blending topical oils for use by herself and then family and friends with great success in achieving high levels of relief from a variety of ailments. Because of recent regulation changes in Michigan with the MRA becoming the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), and parts of the industrial hemp regulation being moved from MDARD to the CRA, we have Andrew Brisbo, the Executive Director of the MRA on this week’s iHemp Hour to answer questions about those recent changes.

Director Brisbo was appointed by Governor Whitmer to lead Michigan’s Marijuana Regulatory Agency (MRA) in April 2019. In addition to overseeing licensing and regulation for the medical and adult-use marijuana industries in Michigan, the MRA also runs the state’s medical marijuana registry card program. MRA’s mission is to establish Michigan as the national model for a regulatory program that stimulates business growth while preserving safe consumer access to marijuana. Andrew has worked in licensing and regulation with the State of Michigan since 2004, including with the Michigan Gaming Control Board, Department of State, and occupational and health professional licensing.
Andrew is also active in the Cannabis Regulators Association (CANNRA), a national organization of more than 40 US state and territorial regulatory agencies that provide policymakers and regulatory agencies with the resources to make informed decisions when considering how to approach the legalization and regulation of cannabis. He currently serves as CANNRA’s president, having been elected to the role in 2021.

She has worked closely with Americans for Safe Access, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, and other cannabis organizations since 2000. Today, Brandy continues to work to protect patient rights through organizing the ASA, Michigan Chapter. Politically Active for a myriad of social justice issues, she has cultivated positive relationships with community leaders, professionals, legislators, their staff, and other influential policymakers at all levels. Jeff is known for his ‘real-life experience in the field as a pedigreed Hemp seed grower and having a strong applied research background providing benchmarks in the hemp industry. Jeff has assisted in the success of producers, Industry, and colleagues in the burgeoning hemp industry over the last 23 years. Jeff studied Agriculture at the University of Manitoba and in 2012 obtained a BGS from Athabasca University where he graduated with distinction. He is a Certified Crop Advisor and is a member of the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists. Jeff is the Chair of the National Hemp variety Testing committee with the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance, and also the chair of the Seed and Grain Committee, with the Hemp Industries Association in America.

Dennis Dean, a fifth-generation farmer, is joined by his wife, Barb, and son, Eric, to raise cherries and hemp on their 120 acres. The original portion of the farm was homesteaded by Dennis’s great, great, great grandfather and has been passed down through each new generation since. Dennis supported his farming habit by teaching Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry for 35 years in Alaska. He was also a Bristol Bay Alaska commercial salmon fisherman for 6 years. Barb was a teacher also and school administrator. Together they raised 2 children, Eric and Teresa. Eric was born and raised in Alaska, completed his Business degree at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and worked construction for a few years before joining Dennis on the farm. Together they decided to begin growing hemp in 2019 to diversify the farming operation and hopefully support future generations of families on the farm. Molly Mott is the industrial hemp program specialist with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). Erica Halverson will talk about how her hemp paper business grew along with her quest to save the planet -- one plant at a time!
Erica Halverson started her career path in retail and moved into a corporate structure, marking her way as a Marketing, Sales, Branding and CPG expert until she decided to get some smaller table experience under her belt and moved to Silicon Valley to join the Startup community. What changed her life was finding her way into the cannabis industry working for a large premium vaporizer company where she was able to marry her professional career with a plant she is personally passionate about. She said "it felt like coming home."
Erica started TINY e PAPER after a serendipitous conversation over happy hour with a friend about hemp paper in November 2017. The proverbial lightbulb went off, and TINY e PAPER was born. This is where she started her own hemp education and realized just how important and special this plant is.
She couldn't do it alone! So, she found some of the best and brightest in the hemp industry along with other skill sets such as marketing and branding expertise and have added them to the TINY e TEAM as advisors and product developers. In my journey to learn more about the world of hemp and the impact it can have on sustainability I discovered Hana. Hana has been active in the hemp industry for twenty years. My hemp journey has me seeking out credible experts on the potential impact of hemp on the environment. The conversation with James covered all things hemp as well as touching on current events with the COVID 19 crisis ramping up in both of our countries.
The rules in Australia are quite different with CBD grows licenced under Medicinal Marijuana. The impact of lobbyist from Canada on legislation in the US was touched upon and the dumping of Canadian hemp grain products below cost in Australia was mentioned.

Adam Rosenberg is the founder of Green Wolverine and offers genetics and growing support through GAS. We talk about the future of hemp and the need for more education.
Green Wolverine will be hosting free educational hemp events at the University of Michigan starting February 4th from 6pm-8pm.

This interview was recorded just prior to the holidays. With the intense amount of work to be done organizing the Midwest iHemp Expo, it was on the back burner. I'm happy to report that the expo was a great success as reported by our attendees. More about that in a future episode.
I met Michele Finn at Hemp At The Crossroads hosted by our friends in Indiana, Midwest Hemp Council. On display was an assortment of terpenes. Terpenes are used to produce specific effects as promoted by various CBD brands. I needed to learn more and Michele was willing to share some knowledge.

Processing the hemp into oil is an important step in the production of CBD products. The capital investment in processing equipment and expertise involved properly using the equipment is prohibitive to most farmers. Michael Golfetto, Pete Conway and Lenard Bugajewski, Jr. are implementing a plan to process 1,000 lbs of hemp an hour using Butane! They explain how they got here and why Butane is less energy expensive and cleaner to use.

This interview is with Dr Jonathan Cachat, or JC. I heard JC on the Gangapreneur podcast and was intrigued with his cannabis knowledge. I had just finished planting an acre of industrial hemp as part of Michigan’s Ag Pilot Program and was hungry for more knowledge. Big thanks for JC taking the time to speak to me.
