On August 25, 2014, Jennifer Doxakis called the 9-1-1 emergency dispatch center in Paulding County, Georgia, to report that her then 40-year old brother Jason Brady was having difficulty breathing. An ambulance was dispatched but Jason died at the scene. As devastating as that was for Jennifer, when she learned of how the call was handled by the responding medical personnel the nightmare deepened and raised this question: Did Jason have to die?

After a fall left Billy Price paralyzed from the chest down, he lost the ability to move much of his body, including his fingers. Guest, Erica DeFrancesco, MS, OTR/L is a Clinical Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy at Quinnipiac University located in Hamden, Connecticut.
Through the university students are taking advantage of a unique living situation program in conjunction with selected area assisted living communities. Once approved, a student will live in the facility for the entire school year. One of the goals is to help students prepare for careers in elder care by providing an experience they can’t find in any classroom.

At TTP we have noticed something we find very concerning: the number of death cases that are ruled as suicides with little or no investigation by the authorities. We are not simply talking about survivors of victims who don’t want to believe their loved one would have taken his or her own life. The cases we are talking about are more than mere “gut feelings.” These are incidents in which the survivors cite compelling evidence that there was a rush to judgement by the authorities in reaching the suicide conclusion.

Mariah & Hank Few
Mariah and Hank Few were the third and fourth of Donna's five kids. Three years apart in age, but in every other way as close as could be. Then, just a few months before Mariah's 30th birthday, a tragedy blew the family apart. Mariah's live in boyfriend called to say that Mariah was dead. Sometime overnight she had stopped breathing. Toxicology reports later confirmed Mariah died from a drug overdose. Was it a suicide, accidental or something else? Apparently, after Mariah’s death Hank escaped his pain by turning to drugs, himself.
Then, on October 9, 2012, the day before what would have been his sister's 30th birthday, Donna saw her son alive for the last time. Two days later he went missing. Friends Hank had been with claimed he wandered into the woods and never came back. His mother didn’t believe it.
After the official searches ended, Donna Few and some of her friends conducted their own search of the area. Donna came across Hank’s body laying in the mud. The police declared the death to be an accident. But Donna doesn’t buy it.

On August 17, 1996, Jack L. Robinson was stabbed to death during an altercation at the Rosewood Boat Landing in Columbia, South Carolina. Witnesses reported that just after 6:00 p.m. they saw Jack and an unknown man arguing over money. As the suspect fled the scene, Jack, mortally wounded, struggled to make his way towards the witnesses for help. Rescue personnel rushed Jack to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Investigators believe Jack and his assailant knew each other but are unsure why the verbal altercation turned violent. A sketch was composited from witness descriptions implicating a Hispanic male with an olive complexion, between the ages of twenty-five to thirty-five years old. Jack’s murder remains unsolved.
Jack’s daughter, Tammy Downs, will talk about the status of the investigation.

Ten-year-old Holly Piirainen was abducted around 12 p.m. on August 5, 1993 while she walked with her younger brother Zachary. The children were looking at puppies near her grandmother's cottage in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. When her brothers returned to the area to fetch their sister, all that was left was one of her shoes in the road. Despite a massive search, Holly's body wasn't found until nearly three months later, on Oct. 23, 1993. Although there have been various persons of interest to the police, Holly’s murder remains unsolved.
Holly’s aunt, Carla Jackman, and Sarah Stein of the Center for the Resolution of Unresolved Crime, will discuss the case.
Sheryl McCollum of Cold Case Investigative Research Institute will talk about investigating cold cases.
Molly's Law
Following the tragic death of his daughter Molly, Larry Young embarked on a mission to get legislation passed in Illinois to benefit survivors of victims of homicides or suspicious deaths. His efforts led to the passage of Molly's Law. Larry will explain what was involved in achieving that goal.
HB6083 extends the statute of limitations for wrongful death cases and allows a lawsuit to be brought within five years after the date or the death, or within one year after a criminal case against a perpetrator concludes.
HB4715 increases the fines for public bodies for not releasing information that has been requested under the Freedom of Information Act to $10,000, plus $1,000 for each day information is withheld.

A young woman’s badly decomposed body was found in the trunk of a tan 1966 Rambler in a parking lot at Southwest 20th Street and Porter Avenue near the Des Moines airport on Thursday, July 10, 1975. The body was later determined to be 21-year-old Diane Marie Schofield.
An autopsy indicated Schofield died of strangulation. Her body was found fully clothed in a green halter top and blue jeans, but with no shoes. Her hands were tied behind her back and her feet bound with twine near the ankles. She’d been strangled with a strip of knotted cloth. The body showed no other apparent signs of violence. Based on evidence and witness accounts, investigators believe she was killed sometime after 9 p.m. Monday, July 7.
Police said robbery didn’t appear to be a motive because Schofield still wore her $200 watch and several turquoise rings. The 1966 Rambler in which her body was found was registered to the victim.
The case has gone cold, but Diane’s sister, Twyla Johnson, refuses to give up her fight for resolution and justice. Twyla will talk about her efforts and the status of the investigation.

On September 26, 1967, then 17-year-old Ronald Anderson of Gulfport, Mississippi died from a gunshot wound under his chin. His friend and roommate, Jeffrey Dennis Bass, was in the apartment when Anderson was shot.
Bass did not immediately notify the police of Ronald Anderson’s death. Instead, he called his aunt, a nurse, who came to the apartment, and reportedly cleaned Anderson’s body. Authorities were then notified of the shooting. Following a court of inquiry, the death was ruled a suicide.
Thirty- six years later, on April 18, 2003, Ronald’s 80-year-old father died a similar death. Dan Anderson was found in the driveway of his Gulfport home, dead from a gunshot wound to his head. His death was also ruled a suicide.
However, Dan’s surviving daughter, Phyllis Cook, believes her father and brother were murdered by members of the infamous Dixie Mafia. Phyllis will present the evidence she has amassed in support of her beliefs.

On October 3, 2016, the Walker County (Georgia) Sheriff dispatched a unit to 862 NICK-A-JACK Road in Flintstone, Georgia, re: an attempted suicide. Upon arrival the deputy found 27-year-old Don “DJ” Fickey deceased on his living room floor, from an apparently self-inflicted shotgun wound. According to witness statements, Fickey had allegedly been arguing with his wife just prior to the incident. A clear case of suicide according to the authorities.
Not so fast, says DJ’s family. They have a strong case consisting of witnesses and other evidence, that DJ was murdered. DJ’s sister. Amanda Shirley, will discuss the case and what the family is doing to get justice.

Brett Wittner
Fourteen-year-old high school freshman Brett Wittner of Covington, Louisiana, was brought into the St. Tammany Parish Hospital the morning of Feb. 25, 2012, with a gunshot wound an inch or so behind his right ear. The bullet had fragmented, and bits of it had made their way toward the left side of his head, causing extensive damage to his brain, according to medical records. He died later that day. The police determined that Brett had accidentally shot himself while at a friend’s house. A grand jury subsequently examined the case and declined to indict anyone. However, Brett’s parents don’t agree with that finding and are continuing to look for avenues that will lead to a different outcome.
Brett’s mother, Donna Wittner, will discuss the case and where it will go from here.

Following the tragic death of his daughter Molly, Larry Young embarked on a mission to get legislation passed in Illinois to benefit survivors of victims of homicides or suspicious deaths. His efforts led to the passage of Molly's Law. Larry will explain what was involved in achieving that goal.
HB6083 extends the statute of limitations for wrongful death cases and allows a lawsuit to be brought within five years after the date or the death, or within one year after a criminal case against a perpetrator concludes.
HB4715 increases the fines for public bodies for not releasing information that has been requested under the Freedom of Information Act to $10,000, plus $1,000 for each day information is withheld.

Brenda Lacombe was just 19 years old when her badly beaten and decomposing body was found off Interstate 495 in Harvard, Mass in 1982, and no one has been charged with her killing in the 36 years since.
The Worcester County District Attorney's unresolved-case squad continues to investigate the Lowell woman's killing, and now Lacombe's niece is trying to help by raising money to have her aunt's body exhumed so a new autopsy and DNA testing can be conducted.
Lacey Kearns, 32, of Lowell, wasn't born yet when her aunt died, but she has spent years investigating her aunt's killing and believes the tests could provide new evidence. Lacey will discuss Brenda’s case.

Absent from public discussion is the fact that the steady rise in suicide is contrasted by a steady decline in homicide in the U.S. These unusual and conflicting patterns have co-existed for a number of years. Incredibly, there are now nearly three suicides for every murder committed in the U.S.

A brutal murder has haunted a Bellingham family and baffled state police investigators for almost 40 years. A teenage girl trying to get home was found murdered on the side of the road. Now, Theresa Corley's family is renewing its search for justice for the unimaginable violence that took her life.
On Tuesday, December 5, 1978, Corley was a vibrant 19-years-old woman working hard while attending Holliston Junior College with the intention of eventually becoming a pediatrician. But that night, Corley had just one thing on her mind – getting home.

On April 30, 2011, Kevin Griffin called 9-1-1 to his apartment in Villa Rica, Georgia, stating his girlfriend, 22-year-old Samantha Sutton, was on the floor and unresponsive. Responding medical personnel were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead. A subsequent autopsy determined her death was caused by an accidental drug overdose. However, her mother, Dee Sutton, doesn’t buy that and believes she has the evidence to prove it.
The goal of The Transparency Project is to help families who are survivors of victims of murder or suspicious death, to gain access to police records related to the investigation of the death of their loved one. This will primarily involve making sure the police agency involved is complying in full with the Sunshine or Open Records laws in effect in their particular jurisdiction. It can include filing appeals when requests for records are denied, and/or recommending changes to existing laws that are overly restrictive.

Not all elderly are sweet little old ladies or gentlemen - some were abusive to their children or spouses. As they age, they are just as likely to develop chronic conditions which need supervision or even hands on care as other seniors. It is not UNcommon for the person they abused to become the caregiver. With 15 million Americans caring for a person with dementia, you can bet a certain percentage had abuse in their prior (and sometimes current) relationships. Sgt. Patrick Rust was assigned to the 10thMountain Division headquartered at Fort Drum in Watertown, New York. In January 2007, he returned from deployment to Afghanistan. Following a 30 day leave he was back on post. The then 24-year-old Rust was a local boy and was familiar with Watertown and the surrounding area. He didn’t have a driver’s license or vehicle.
On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, Sgt. Rust moved most of his personal effects from the barracks on base to share an apartment with a fellow soldier at 156 Sterling Street, Apartment 4, in Watertown.
The following day Patrick rode back to the apartment with his new roommate after they were released from duty at around 5 pm. At around 6:30 they left the apartment in the roommate's car and drove to the Salmon Run Mall. While there Patrick purchased some games for his Gameboy PSP player in the Best Buy store. They then went to the food court and got something to eat at Wendy’s. At around 7:50 the pair left the mall and split up a short time later, with the roommate stopping at a tanning salon and Patrick walking back to their apartment.
The next reported sighting of Patrick was between 9 and 10 p.m. at a well-known gay and lesbian bar on Arsenal Street called Clueless. It was an establishment Patrick had never been at before and it is unknown why he went there that night. Patrick reportedly left the bar at around 1 a.m. on March 16 and disappeared. His skeletal remains were found six months later in a farmer's field about five miles outside of Watertown. How he got to that location is unknown and his manner of death is undetermined.

Opioid addiction has reached crisis levels in the US and has taken hold, no city or small town is untouched. Emergency rooms across the nation are seeing more and more patients, some resulting in death, from street drugs as well as those prescribed.
Dr. Gregor Shangold, an emergency room physician in Hartford, CT joins Shattered Lives to explore this crisis, expose some of the myths, and offer evidence based solutions. Not only does opioid use affect the addict and their families, but trickles down into many levels of the community.

On Sept. 8, 1992, the Maryland mother was taking her 2-year-old daughter to her first day of nursery school when two men pulled her from her car. Struggling to rescue her daughter, Basu became entangled in a seat belt and was dragged to her death. The brutal crime received world-wide publicity, led to federal anti-carjacking legislation and continues to be cited in reference and legal books.
Since her daughter Brittany Phillips' murder in 2004, Maggie Zingman has traveled the country on the Caravan to Catch a Killer.
On October 1, 2004 a friend found Brittany dead in her East Tulsa apartment. Investigators said the killer raped and suffocated her. Detectives collected DNA from the crime scene and have since run over 3,000 samples in Oklahoma. Currently they are looking at one specific person, but the case remains unsolved.
"I know finding her killer is not going to bring closure, but I want to feel like at least I stopped him from killing other people," Zingman said.
Since Brittany's death, Zingman has found a way to keep her daughter's spirit alive. She travels across the country in what she calls "A Caravan to Catch a Killer." She shares Brittany's story and educates others about the benefits of DNA swabbing people under arrest.
2001 is the year Americans will always remember, especially 9-11. However, tragedy struck months before when Hofstra honor student, Max Kolb lost his life to a fellow student. Missing for several weeks, his mutilated boday was found in a shallow grave near the oceanfront apartment of Shaun Alexander.

In 1986, sixteen-year-old Cheryl Pierson hired a classmate to kill her father.
James Pierson began abusing Cheryl from the time she was only eleven. Her invalid mother died when Cheryl was fifteen, and even though she was a child herself, she assumed responsibility for keeping house for the family, including cooking, cleaning and laundry. She also took over raising her younger sister, was made to satisfy her father’s enormous sexual appetite, and expected to do well in school. He kept her on a short leash as she got older because he wanted her for himself. Then her father threatened to transfer his sexual desires to her eight-year-old sister Joann. During a discussion with a classmate about a woman who hired someone to kill her husband, he offered to kill her father for $1,000.

Francis Buk is a native of southern Sudan. At the age of seven, he was captured and enslaved during an Arab militia raid on the village of Nymlal (outside Aweil) on May 15, 1986. Buk saw adults and children brutalized and killed all around him. He was strapped to a donkey and taken north to Kirio.
For ten years, he lived as the family slave to Giema Abdullah, forced to sleep with cattle, endure daily beatings, and eat terrible food. On May 23, 2000, Buk spoke out for the first time at a Capitol Hill ceremony with Senators and Congressmen, sharing his message: "We cannot rest until my people are free." Because workplace violence prevention has been commoditized by sales people selling training videos, computer based training, active shooter training focuses on what to do "if" there's an active shooter instead of focusing on how to manage and prevent the transition from disgruntled employee to active shooter. In this episode we talk with Gloria Maynard about the unsolved murder of her then 20-year-old daughter Lisa Gondek. Lisa had moved out of the family home in Connecticut and in 1981 was living in Oxnard, California with a friend. On December 12 she was found strangled to death in the bathtub of her apartment. Her body had been posed erotically and the apartment had been set on fire.
Twenty years later DNA testing led to a chilling development: Twenty-year-old Rachel Zendejas, who had been found raped and strangled to death in nearby Camarillo, California on January 18, 1981, and Lisa had been murdered by the same person.
The only other link between the two murders was that Both Lisa and Rachel had been in a Huntington’s night club within hours of their deaths and their killer remains at large.

Josh Melville is the son of Sam Melville, who known in 1960s history as “the mad bomber.” Sam Melville is considered by some historians to be the architect of modern political radicalism in the United States. In 1969 he executed bombings of 8 government institutions. His motivations were stated as corporate imperialism, specifically the US involvement in the Vietnam War, social and racial inequality.
Melville was subsequently incarcerated in New York’s Attica maximum security prison, where he waged a one-man war against prison administration. He was there in September 1971, when inmates took control of the prison for four days in what became the bloodiest prison uprising in US history. He was killed by police when they stormed the prison, shot at close range while unarmed.

Karen Beaudin's sister, Kathy Gloddy, was brutally murdered on November 21, 1971 and her case has never been solved, nor has justice been served.
In 2010 she released her first book, A Child Is Missing: a true story recounting the events of sister Kathy's murder. She has recently released a sequel, A Child Is Missing: searching for justice which was the result of six years of research and interviews. Retired and current investigators spoke freely about the difficulties they faced while working on her sister Kathy’s murder investigation.
The case was reactivated in 1983 and again in 2004. In 2006, Kathy’s remains were exhumed for DNA.

November 14, 2002 was like any other day for Alice Donovan and her family. As she was preparing for the upcoming holidays, she was confronted in a parking lot by two escaped convicts who kidnapped her at gunpoint and brutally murdered her, afterwards discarding her body. Alice Donovan was missing for 6 years, a national high-profile case, and her remains were found in January 2009 in a rural field just outside of Myrtle Beach, South Carollina.
Angie Warner and her sister, Jennifer were devastated and their lives spiraled out of control for several years while the murderers were apprehended and convicted in two separate trials.

Jan Blaser-Upchurch, Victim Services Administrator, AZ Department of Corrections. Jan Blaser-Upchurch has a distinguished record of leadership and service to crime victims, both in Arizona and across the country. She is a steadfast advocate for the rights of victims and has worked diligently to educate the public and train victim advocates regarding vital issues facing the Victim Services community for over 20 years. Tragically, her first husband Sgt John Blaser, AZ DPS, was killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver in 1990. Since his untimely death, Jan has worked tirelessly to educate the public and to enhance DUI and crime victims’ rights legislation. She has dedicated countless volunteer hours and leadership to organizations both statewide and nationally, some of which include: Arizona Concerns of Police Survivors, Arizona DPS Critical Incident Review Board, AZ Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Task Force; Southern AZ DUI Task Force, MADD National Board, and the Concerns of Police Survivors National Board.
Jan has been the Victim Services Administrator at the Arizona Department of Corrections since 2009. In her position at ADC, she has been able to maintain a high level of service to victims of crimes whose perpetrators are incarcerated. She regularly attends clemency hearings and executions; and assists in a variety of ways to advocate for victims each and every day. Jan has provided services and morale support to thousands of victims throughout her career, and has been instrumental in shaping laws and guidelines that affect victims and offenders both in Arizona and throughout the nation.

Language that is too sophisticated, complex or gimmicky, or long blocks of flat narrative sometimes called a laundry list, often trigger inattention instead of creating a visual experience.

The sound of "Amazing Grace" played by a lone bagpiper resonated as a line of Connecticut law enforcement officers honored the family of slain police officer, Robert Holcomb, as they left a victorious parole hearing for the person responsible for his murder.
In 1977 Gerald "Gary" Castonguay was convicted of shooting Officer Holcomb to death, and in January 2015, without notice to Holcomb's family, the Connecticut Pardon and Parole Board granted him parole beginning in July.
Not only was the family outraged at this decision, but also fellow officers and the general public who campaigned through letters, emails, and calls to oppose Castonguay's release.
Granted a new hearing, the family was able to express their injustice and the parole was rescinded.
In the old Dragnet show, Sgt. Joe Friday used to say, "The facts, ma'am, only the facts." But when a writer is creating a book or story part of their process is making sure to check facts,particularly when they are setting out a particular set of circumstances. If you get it wrong, some of your readers will know and possibly spread the word. The internet is a wonderful source of information, but if you can't find what you want, let your fingers do the walking. Once you've figured out who might have the information you need, pick up the phone and call. It might be a friend, or the public relations division of a police department, hospital, public entity or any number of possibilities. When Morgan St. James was writing "Betrayed," she needed to know what would happen in the late 1950s if an inmate in an Illinois prison was beaten to a point where they had to be on lifesupport. The information was not readily available on the internet, so she called the public relations department at the prison in Illinois and discovered her answer, The Public Relations officer researched her and called back with the information that the policy had changed over the years. What would have happened now, wasn't the cae then. Back then the inmate would have been kept in the prison infirmary. So, St. James was able to portray the scene correctly for the era.

One of the most important qualities a fictional character can possess is to seem real to the reader.
Forget just stringing together a series of words describing physical attributes and how the character carries out routine or off-the-chart situations—perhaps spiced with inner thoughts. There is more to creating someone with feelings and emotions and a physical presence. Doing that doesn’t have to be daunting. Because the reader sees events through the eyes of these players in the story, at all costs avoid moving paper dolls or overblown figures through the scenes.

On March 19-22, 2015 the National Missing Persons Conference was held in Wilmington, NC sponsored annually by CUE Center for Missing Persons. Each year the conference is attended by families of the missing as a place to network, learn and gather together with others who are suffering the same losses. It's a place where they feel safe to share, cry, and laugh together as they continue their journey to find their missing loved one.
The theme for the 11th annual conference is "Persevere: into the unknown" and included several illustrious speakers, instructors and classes on a variety of related topics.
Today's show is dedicated to remembrances of the conference and what attendees take away each year as inspiration to continue, either as a family member, advocate, or law enforcement.
