Navia and Oreo are two perfect pups who really need to get out of the shelter and into their forever homes. Navia is a one-year-old caramel swirl; Oreo’s an 8-month-old fudge swirl. They play super well together, but don’t need to be adopted together, though we don’t think they’d mind hanging out and snuggling on the couch after wearing themselves out with an enthusiastic romp around your backyard. These two fantastic dogs have special reasons why they are featured this week: Navia is our longest term adoptable dog – she’s been with us since April of this year, though we really don’t understand why she hasn’t been snapped up. She plays well with everybody and was a champion in her 4th of July foster home. Oreo is a newer resident, but he finds the shelter environment very stressful and hurts himself in his kennel. He is spending his nights with one of the staff who thinks he is just about the best puppy she’s ever met! He’s done well with the four other dogs in his foster home, though can be an annoyance to older dogs (what puppy isn’t?) Navia and Oreo are both bully mixes; Navia is about 50 pounds and we think Oreo will be about the same. They both are mostly housetrained, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and heartworm negative. Neither have lived with cats, but with proper introductions and some training we think they might do just fine. Both are available at Berrien County Animal Control for just $30. Come meet them at Berrien County Animal Control at 1400 S. Euclid Benton Harbor M-Th 9-5:30, Fri 9-2:30 or this Saturday from 9-12.

Need a girl in your life who also needs you? Well, we have the perfect dog for you! Our sweet Paris came to us after a very rough start in life, but she is resilient. Paris might be a bit shy when you first meet her, but once she knows you we can pretty reliably predict that she will become your Heart Dog. Sadly, Paris is heartworm positive and will be treated with funds from Friends of Berrien County Animal Control. The adoption fee for Paris is sponsored.. but if you’re not ready to adopt we will be happy to allow a Berrien County resident to foster or foster-to-adopt, something we’re not usually able to do, but we love her so much and want to see her settled in a home so badly! Destiny is a sweet, beautiful girl who was returned to us after not getting along with the resident cat, and she is looking for a cat/small animal free home. She would do best in a quiet home, but with someone who is willing to get her some good exercise, as she is still young and very active. Destiny is uncomfortable and nervous with new people when she first meets them, but slowly opens up, and will gently ask for love and attention once she starts trusting you. She needs someone willing to give her this time, and to keep up with her exercise and training so she can blossom. She is willing to meet a new dog friend, but this introduction too might take some time. Destiny is a good listener and very loyal when she gets to know you. She finds a favorite toy and sticks with it! Her current favorite is an orange and blue rubber bone. She sits when asked and is great on a leash. She’s doing well learning not to react to other dogs she sees, but will need consistent work on that. Add a little canned food to her bowl and she’ll be your best friend. She loves soft, jerky-like treats, especially if they smell like bacon! Destiny is a little under 3 years old and is 42 lbs. She is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and heartworm negative. Jessie is a very goofy girl who likes treats and, despite her need for intensive veterinary care for heartworm disease and mastitis, she retains a very joyful personality. Jessie is four years old and came to Al-Van in August of 2021 in need of veterinary care. She has undergone treatment and is ready to find a loving home where she can rest her head. Jessie can be a little hand shy at first meeting, but she is very quick to warm up and trust new people! Once she warms up, she will show her belly for rubs (her favorite!) and will sit for treats. Jessie is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, has undergone heartworm treatment, and has been treated for mastitis. She is patiently waiting for her forever home! If you are interested in adopting or fostering or adopting Jessie, you can visit Al-Van’s website at al-van.org.
