This week on Liftoff by Bottle Rocket, Tony and Peter dig into some heavy themes around TikTok, Data, Privacy, and your Data as a Currency.
How much are you willing to trade for your privacy? How much is your data worth to you
TikTok may be a video sharing platform, a social media app, or a way to make fun videos… But actually it’s a rally cry.
Perhaps we need to have a better understanding of the value that our activities across the global digital ecosystem bring to entities.
Is thumbing through 60 second videos worth forfeiting your privacy and data?

The past year-and-a-half of hosting the Experience Design podcast has been extraordinary.
I still pinch myself when I think of all of the amazing guests that were kind enough to say, “yes” to some random guy (me) to ask them questions about design and life.
I still pinch myself when I think of how this little passion project went from a handful of friends and family listening, to over 150 countries tuning in.
But lately I’ve been doing some deep looks inside, and evaluating how I’m spending my “free” time outside of my 9-5 job.
And, I’ve decided to focus more of that time on family and passions outside of my career. So... I am sunsetting the Experience Design podcast.
BUT!
I’m happy to announce that I have partnered with Bottle Rocket (where I work) to bring a new podcast in-house.
The podcast will expand beyond UX design and also take a look inside business strategy, the impact of technology and an ever-evolving product landscape.
The new podcast will be titled LIFTOFF and I can't wait for you to be part of it and to introduce my co-host to all of you.
I’m excited to be:
Stay tuned and get ready to LIFTOFF in the next few weeks…. :)

I couldn't be happier to have Mike Janda on the show again.
When Mike was first on the podcast, it was episode only episode 23. Now 40 episodes later, there are two major differences for both of us:
1.) This show was still called "the XD Podcast" and has since rebranded to, "Experience Design"
2.) Mike's instagram @morejanda had only 10K followers. Today, his thought leadership, industry veteran insights, and design stewardship have amassed him 125K followers.
On this episode we discuss design entrepreneurship, the climb to the summit of success, the ability to stop and enjoy the climb, innate vs learned skills, and the importance of having a tribe.

Well. I have a few episodes in the bank and I could have easily published one of those today, however, I feel like I would be remiss to not address the elephant in the room, rather the elephant in the world right now which is Corona Virus.
The CEO of Bottle Rocket, which is where I work, just slacked this little kid bit to us.
It is a picture of Isaac Newton. And It reads:
In 1665, Isaac Newton had to work from home when the University of Cambridge temporarily closed due to the Bubonic Plague. It was the most productive period of his life, and he used that time to develop his theories on calculus, optics… and of course the discovery of gravity.
And I think at it’s core it’s a reminder that we have faced tragedy at scale before and we will prevail. This world will prevail. It will take blood, sweat, tears, but we will make it through.
Especially during times like this, my call to action I have at the end of every show rings more true than ever. And that is, friends, to stay curious.

Designers will never be the expert in the room.
That’s an interesting pill to swallow, but it couldn’t be more true. We are tasked with working in so many different fields. But what we must bring to the table is our ability to extract insights, gain empathy and facilitate co-creation.
Join me for an endlessly fascinating conversation with Peter Smart. Peter leads global design at Fantasy as Managing Partner and Head of Product Design. He's shipped industry-shifting products for the likes of Royal Caribbean, Netflix, UFC, Google, Facebook, Huawei, Twitter, The Academy of Motion Pictures and 23andMe. He's been a prolific speaker since 2012, speaking on innovation, human-centered design and entrepreneurialism, having founded and ran his first full-service design agency at age 15.

Stephen is the Head Design Evangelist at InVision, host of The Crazy One podcast, and an international keynote speaker.
The amount of gold that drops from Stephen’s mouth in a 30 minute time block blows my mind! Ha! We talk creativity, collaboration, innovation, and staying true to yourself as a design—and person.
What an honor it was to have Stephen Gates on the show this week. He is the reason I started a podcast, to be honest, and I’m flattered to have him on the show.
My favorite quote from this episode would have to be:
“We can no longer be the designer who’s off in the corner, wearing a beret, doing a watercolor of our spirit animal—telling everybody that you don’t understand our process."

I can't believe we're on episode 50! And what a way to celebrate, then with the incredibly talented Founder of Pitchproof, Ryan Hayward.
On this episode we discuss the importance of standing out as a designer and we talk about why it's so important to be unique and lean into your differences as a designer.
Ryan also goes over 3 key ways to nail a pitch. So grab a pen, or save this episode for later :)

Imagine this - you're an industrial designer (in Hrag Nassanian's case, of soft goods) and you've got a sweet gig at Nike. The king of soft goods in design. And you decide... you leave and start your own business.
Sound crazy? Perhaps. But after speaking with Hrag, and seeing what he's got going on with his company Wayfinder... I'm convinced it was the right choice.
In this episode we talk about the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and the end-to-end user experience of industrial design.

Why does creativity matter? What does it mean to have a transcendental experience through design? What is the most important thing in your life?
Some heavy questions. Good thing I had the honor of Chris Do behind the mic this week to riff on these deep topics.
Chris Do is the CEO of Blind, the Founder of TheFutur, and, yes, has won a freakin' Emmy award.

Nikos Georgopoulos is an award winning designer based in London. He currently serves as an Associate Lecturer, London College of Communication, and is the Head of Graphic Design at Pollard Thomas Edwards.
As of late he has been globe trotting giving talks on his Xenia Project at the International Conference on Typeography, the international conference on Tourism, as well as the Big Design Conference here in Dallas, Texas.
On this week’s episode, Nikos and I dive deep into the narrative designers need to create for their projects—how the past might be the best tool to influence the future. And we also scratch our heads on… Do we take ourselves too seriously as designers? Have we sucked all of the “fun” out of the design process?
My favorite quote from Nikos on this episode, “I kind of like when things are a bit wrong, and a bit quirky, or don’t make sense.”

What does it mean to think outside the box? Design outside the box? Hire outside the box? UX…outside the box? As I listened back and was producing this week’s episode with James Helms—Vice President of Design at Intuit—I couldn’t help but keep going back to those themes and those questions.
“Design sees problems worth solving, and looks for elegant was to solve those problems.”
I hope you enjoy this week’s episode of Experience Design.

Big Design in Dallas, TX is a design conference that happens once a year and has been going strong for 12 years, founded by Brian Sullivan. I had the honor of giving my talk on the Main Stage this year at the South Side Ballroom at Gilley’s. A stage that the past 9 US Presidents have spoken on, too many bands to name, and not to mention Jared Spool was one of the Keynote speakers on said stage. Talk about feeding my Imposter Syndrome...
This talk stemmed from my 10th episode on this very podcast. However, with the extended time frame I was able to dive a little deeper. At any rate, I’ve had a lot of people as to hear the talk so here it is! Apologies for the audio quality. I did as much work in post as I could!

Are you a contributor or a leader? What compels you to do the work you do as a designer? You may very well be equipped with the tools and skills necessary to deliver on "good design" but are you able to articulate the value of design? In order to gain a seat at the table, we need to be able to speak the language the rest of the people at the table are speaking. And that language is: business.

As the podcast wings continue to spread--my hope is to get more guest like Alex Cohen. Alex is a co-worker of mine at Bottle Rocket Studios here in Dallas, TX. As a Client Partner and Director of Strategy and Transformation, from the outside one might assume that our roles may not have much in common to talk about. However, we have so much to learn from one and other, and also much in common. He is someone that embraces curiosity, operates with empathy, and as he discusses in the episode... leans into the tensions. I can't wait for you to hear this one friends.

Professor, coach, designer, animator, friend, speaker, strategist, entrepreneur... the list goes on and on. With a history and wealth of knowledge like J. Schuh has -- you just want him behind the mic as much as possible.
We discussed persistence, never standing too close to the canvas, and the core of UX... solving people problems.

On this week's episode I have Miriam Isaac. She is a Senior Product Designer, also voted one of the top 18 designer instagrams to follow in 2019, voted Top 8 Women in Tech, and has worked for Fortune 200 companies.
Our conversation started as a back and forth on instagram when I posted what I call a "Designer Quick Rant" and I...in so many words, said that I thought a particular video of a paper prototype was "an egregious waste of time." Well, Miriam thought otherwise. And I wanted to continue our civil discourse, so here we are today. We also talk about other UX Design related things, so it's not all debate, people! ;)

My guest this week is Ioana Teleanu. Designer, and creator of @uxgoodies on instagram. If you are a designer and don't yet follow her account--I definitely recommend it. On today's episode Ioana and I discuss two main topics: 1.) Everyone, with the right tenacity and mentality, can become a UX Designer. And, 2.) The representation of women in the UX design industry.

This week is an interesting one for me. Typically I research the guest, communicate before hand, and then sit down for an interview. However, this time, one of my early guests Steve Ray suggested I have Ray Hernandez on the show. Plot twist... I went in blind to this, and Ray Hernandez went in blind on this. What we unravelled in our short time together was really interesting insights on entrepreneurship, drive, and design. Plus a really fascinating story about how Ray struck a deal with Mark Cuban.

What is creativity? And why do so many people believe they are missing that “creative bone”?
Well first of all. You are creative. You’ve just let others silence that creativity over time. See when we’re children we are endlessly creative. We’re born with no chains on our imagination or curiosity. We have the freedom to explore and create with abandon.
But then as time goes on, we have to get more "practical." More structured. And we end up inadvertently demonizing the curious with old sayings like:
Curiosity killed the cat.
He let his curiosity get the best of him.
Get your head out of the clouds.

It might sound a little odd, but, currently I have no dreams. I only have goals. Tangible, crystal clear goals. So how do we take standard definition dreams--and turn them into high definition goals?
High Definition Goals follow these 5 Rules:
They are Yours and Yours Alone

My guest this week is Jason Osburn, the Chief Empathy Officer of Cariloop--a caregiver support platform that relieves the stress and anxiety of caring for loved ones while balancing a full-time job.
If this is the first time you've read the words, "Chief Empathy Officer" you probably aren't alone. Typically we see CEO and we think Chief Executive Officer. However, for Cariloop, that little acronym has been flipped and focused on truly understanding the users. When a company puts an Empathy Officer in the C-Suite, you know that the adage of, "Seek to understand before being understood" is deep in their core.

Imposter Syndrome is an often felt, not often talked about feeling that plagues the minds of so many people. But it's time we start talking about it, and furthermore, taking steps toward battling it.
Curiosity didn't kill the cat. In fact it hasn't killed anyone. To be a curious designer and person is to be a successful person. And one that both Greg Flory and I love working with.

This week I sit down with Kristin Patterson, CPACC and we talk about Digital Accessibility. For one reason or another, accessibility has become a dirty word, or at the very least gotten a bad rap. And yet... the topic couldn't be more relevant and important for designers and businesses.

On this episode I sit down with the one and only Adam Polansky. Colleague, friend, and walking data base of all things UX, it was a great and wide spreading conversation.
Adam discusses his journey into design, and how information architecture and product design have evolved over the years. We discuss how designers can get a seat at "the table" and how as technology changes, we must stay true to our ethics.

Welcome to Experience Design w/ Tony Daussat. Yes, another design term thrown into the mix with UX, UI, CX, IxD, SD, and... more. But to me, XD is a great umbrella for so many, if not all, aspects of design. Listen and discover how we can help demystify design and make it a little more human.
I’m your host, Tony Daussat (like...the title says) and I am so thankful you’re here. In this first episode I'll tell you a little bit about myself, and also lay some groundwork for the definition of what the heck this podcast is all about.
As the weeks go on you’ll be hearing more from me (obviously) as well as some of the smartest people I could gather for interviews in design, marketing, entrepreneurship, leadership and more.
