As a wrap-up of HCA resident Erik Peters' first solo exhibition “From Then To Here”, Kumbirai Makumbe, Liminal Vision, Louisa Teichmann, Federico Poni, Camilo Garcia, and Erik Peters himself, gather around the table to reflect on their process of collaboration.
The exhibition 'From Then To Here' was built upon the practice of collaborative world-building and proposes a collective quest of sense-making and imagination. Through the works of the aforementioned artists, it explored the plurality of future narratives. During the podcast, the artists will dive deeper into these subjects, their works & how they came together.

Architecture City - 12 - Architecture on show neemt je mee in de wereld van de architectuurtentoonstelling. We spreken met Paul Kempers die een biografie schreef over Jean Leering. Deze idealist, mentor, schrijver en gentleman-activist gaf architectuur het podium in het Van Abbemuseum waar hij directeur was. Ook onze gast is Sergio Figueiredo, hoofd van de Curatorial Research Collective aan de TU Eindhoven en schrijver van The NAieffect, een boek over het Nederlands Architectuurinstituut als de plek waar Nederlandse architectuurcultuur gestalte kreeg. Tot slot praten we met de kersverse directeur van Internationale Architectuur Biënnale Rotterdam, Saskia van Stein. Wat zijn voor haar de belangrijkste ervaringen en lessen uit de ca. zeventig tentoonstellingen over design en architectuur die zij eerder maakte bij onder andere het NAi en Bureau Europa? En wat zijn haar plannen met de Biënnale?
In this podcast, we will be exploring the themes and subject matter of the work of Visual artist and documentarist Lavinia Xausa whose current project focuses on questions as to why, in contemporary society, more and more people gather around groups with a strong identity and unity such as political supporters, football fans, online communities, etc. Joining Lavinia is Jacco van Sterkenburg who is a researcher working as an endowed professor in race, inclusion, and communication, specifically in relation to football and media and Rotterdam local and Feyenoord supporter Joia Wienstra.

Zelf bouwen is zo oud als de mensheid. En ook in een samenleving waarin het bouwen steeds verder professionaliseert, houdt het nog altijd stand. Kijk maar naar al die schuurtjes en bouwsels in volkstuinen en achtertuinen, op de daken van de stad, en in de vorm van kraakpanden bijvoorbeeld.

In the fourth podcast, Roodkapje Radio moves into the construction of the fairy tale as a narrative and the importance of this in the work of both artist Danielle Hoogendoorn and writer Tommy Ventevogel. Both will enter into a dialogue about the characteristics of their respective practices, drawing out in more detail the way they work, how the magic of the fairy tale is achieved, and what role the fairy tale holds in contemporary society. Furthermore, Danielle and Tommy will talk about cooking up stories with animals, animal rights, and other allies.

She examines and teaches the migration of Black culture, people, and ideas through an interdisciplinary approach: workshops, lectures, and presentations.

Een dag voordat het NBA seizoen herstart vanuit 'the Bubble' bespreken we de status van de league. Hoe zijn alle teams de afgelopen vier maanden doorgekomen, en hoe zien alle spelers eruit.
In 2017 stortte de wereld zich massaal op het nieuwe goud: cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, Etherium, Stellar Lumen... Gelokt door de platte verhalen over snelle winsten en de wat meer idealistische verhalen over 'eerlijker' geld werden miljarden aan spaargeld omgezet in cryptocurrencies. Currencies die hun waarde in de jaren erna bijna compleet zagen verdampen.

BoksOuwe is een podcast-serie over ‘the noble art of self defense’; boksen. Met interviews met boksers van toen en nu, verhalen uit de rijke geschiedenis van de sport en analyses van legendarische wedstrijden uit het verleden. BoksOuwe wil ook afrekenen met een aantal hardnekkige vooroordelen over de sport. En aantonen dat boksen veel meer dan alleen het gevecht tussen twee mensen in de ring. Nouchka Fontijn
Nouchka Fontijn (Rotterdam, 9 november 1987) is al meer 10 jaar de onbetwiste nummer een in het Nederlandse vrouwen-boksen. Ze won meerdere Europese toernooien, werd Europees kampioen in 2014 en won een zilveren medaille op de Olympische Spelen van 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. Nouchka is afgestudeerd fysiotherapeut en woont in Schiedam.

In het Westen lijken de nummers 8 t/m 13 de strijd te voeren om de achtste plek en dus kwalificatie voor de Playoffs. De Dallas Mavericks lijken safe op plek zeven, met zeven winstpartijen meer dan Memphis (8). In het Oosten lijken de kaarten geschud. De Bucks hebben zich historisch vroeg (en als eerste dit seizoen) geplaatst voor de Playoffs.

Flagrant Three - 52 Het All-Star weekend in Chicago zit er weer op! Wederom is Aaron Gordon beroofd van zijn titel als Slam Dunk Champion (zonder hiermee afbreuk te doen aan de dunks van Derrick Jones Jr.). Buddy Hield werd 3-Point Champ op de laatste bonus bal, en Bam Adebayo pakte notabene de eerste plek bij de Skills Challenge. Was de nieuwe opzet van de All-Star Game zelf op zondag een succes? De spanning zat er in het vierde kwart in ieder geval goed in!
Verder bespreken we nog de laatste dagen voor de trade deadline van 7 februari - onze laatste show was namelijk op 5 februari.

You also visit Asteria's dressing room and you can wander around the universe looking for her. Die Fernweh Oper, with a libretto written by Belgian poet Maud Vanhauwaert and sung by Swiss opera talent Annina Gieré, is the fourth in the series 'Shoebox Dioramas': interactive illustrations made by Dutch artist Daniel Ernst. Each of the dioramas takes you to hand-painted environments full of weird and wonderful characters and surprising stories."

Twenty-something Leyla willingly submits to the film experiment. Kars surrounds her with actors: Pierre Bokma plays her father, Elsie de Brauw her mother, Jonas Smulders her boyfriend. As she rakes over the past with them, she discusses the effect this has on her with the filmmaker.”

V2_ presents, produces, archives and publishes research at the interface of art, technology, and society. Founded in 1981, V2_ offers a platform for artists, designers, scientists, researchers, theorists, and developers of software and hardware from various disciplines to discuss their work and share their findings. In V2_'s view, art and design play an essential role in the social embedding of technological developments. Dit najaar organiseert het Design Museum Den Bosch de tentoonstelling Design van het Derde Rijk. De tentoonstelling toont de bijdrage van vormgeving en ontwerp aan de opkomst en uitvoering van de kwaadaardige nazi-ideologie. In deze aflevering van Architecture City zijn ontwerpers en makers aan get woord die op de nalatenschap van het Derde Rijk in zijn gegaan.
Hoe krijgt de nalatenschap van het Nazi-regime doorwerking in de wijze waarop we onze huidige, geïndividualiseerde wereld vormgeven? Hoe verhoud je je als maker/ontwerper tot een zo ‘groot’ onderwerp uit de geschiedenis en is hedendaagse architectuur een geschikt middel om te reageren?We spreken met Eline Strijkers van Doepel Strijkers architecten, dat net een uitbreiding van Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught heeft gerealiseerd. Ook is Luuk Bouwman te gast, zijn film ‘All against all’, over de opkomst van het fascisme in Nederland, ging deze maand in première op het International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. Tot slot ging Architecture City langs bij architect Steven van der Goes. Hij woont in een huis uit de jaren vijftig dat is gebouwd bovenop een bunker van Seyss Inquart.

The seventh episode of Architecture City is called Lessons from Johan Niegeman. Starting point of this show is the work of Dutch architect Johan Niegeman, one of the few Dutch teachers at Bauhaus who, together with Mart Stam, designed and build several social housing projects in the Soviet Union. Niegeman attempted to design a better quality of housing for the masses, specifically groups that lived in poor conditions, in particular, working-class citizens. He believed designers should always design for the most precarious citizens in society. The University of Applied Arts in Arnhem initiated a project in 2018 based on this idea. The project is called Designing for Precarious Citizens in which three contemporary designers took upon the challenge to translate Niegeman’s ideas to today’s society. Artist Giuditta Vendrame, interaction designer Klasien van de Zandschulp and speculative designer Frank Kolkman all developed an installation aimed at three completely different precarious groups. All three designers took completely different approaches. Kolkman researched the consequences of the platform economy for social housing tenants. Van de Zandschulp considered people at home, especially in the kitchen, as a growing precarious group as a consequence of the growing automatization of the home. And lastly, Vendrame looked at the precariousness of people residing on the water as an unstable ground for living conditions in relation to citizenship. All three designers will talk about their project, just as professor of product design and interior architecture Jeroen van den Eijnde to talk about this project.

Met werk van Mike Bouchet, Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson, Riley Harmon en Atelier Van LieshoutIn deze wereld heeft elk mens – theoretisch gezien – gelijke rechten, maar niet iedereen gelijke middelen om hiernaar te handelen. De kunstenaars markeren de kloof tussen droom en werkelijkheid van gelijkheid, elk ingaande op andere voorbeelden van hiaten tussen de reële situatie en ons ideaalbeeld. De samenstelling van de werken roept een gevoel van irreële werkelijkheid op, die vraagt om tot actie over te gaan. De tentoonstelling toont werk vol zwarte humor en urgente vragen. De sombere kijk op de werkelijkheid zet bezoekers aan tot nadenken over wat we voor lief nemen, waardoor ze zich afvragen: “Wat klopt hier niet?”
AVL Mundo De stichting, opgericht in 2008 door kunstenaar Joep van Lieshout, heeft als doel (on)gewenste kunstprojecten te verwezenlijken en kunst toegankelijk te maken voor iedereen.

Op vrijdag 17 augustus komt Winfried Baijens langs in de container van Operator. In een uur wordt hij door Samira Ben Messaoud bevraagd over televisieland, journalistiek, muziek, en zijn stad Rotterdam. Maar het gesprek wordt vooral niet te serieus, want dat is hij al vaak genoeg voor het NOS Journaal. Ook neemt Winfried muziek mee naar de studio. En zijn selectie schijnt deze keer menig harten te kunnen breken.
Winfried Baijens
Winfried Baijens is presentator en programmamaker. Niet alleen televisie is zijn domein, maar hij is ook op de radio te horen. Hij presenteerde het Jeugdjournaal en werkte voor NOS op 3. Daarna vertrok hij naar de NTR en is uiteindelijk weer teruggekeerd bij de NOS, als vaste presentator van het Journaal. Winfried Bayens werd op 13 december 1977 geboren in het Limburgse Horst, maar groeide op in Philippine, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.

Joep van Lieshout, een bekende Rotterdamse beeldhouwer en ontwerper, komt deze keer langs bij Operator voor een gesprek. In een uur wordt hij ondervraagd over zijn atelier, zijn werk en ontwerpen, Rotterdam en natuurlijk zichzelf. Joep van Lieshout
Joep van Lieshout (1963) is een beeldhouwer, installatie-kunstenaar en ontwerper. Sinds 1995 werkt hij met een team onder de naam Atelier van Lieshout, een werkplaats en studio in Rotterdam. Zijn werk wordt wereldwijd geëxposeerd: van Museum of the Contemporary Art in Miami tot aan Art Basel in Hong Kong. Van Lieshout ontwerpt objecten op de grens van beeldende en toegepaste kunst. Hij staat bekend om zijn functionele sculpturen.

After a successful first edition focusing on the work of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, this 11 May you can experience a meeting by night with hyperrealistic sculptures, a live talk show, cutting-edge performances and a fabulous party in the Kunsthalcafé.
From 21.30 to 23.30 hrs the exhibition Hyperrealism Sculpture will be the exciting setting for a broadcast by the young Rotterdam online radio platform Operator. The radio and Kunsthal programmers have combined to present an evening of art, performances and special guests. The focus this evening is on the hyperrealistic sculptures. These familiar human figures stimulate intimate reflection on human nature. Stand eye to eye with the artworks and discover what they do to you. Is this real? To pump up the alienation we have prepared something special for you. The artist Yvonne Beelen’s performance group Ytopia will surprise and stun you with performances in and around the exhibition during The Perfect Night.

One of the guests that she will interview from the Kunsthal during The Perfect Night is Non la décadence – well-known from the Gender Bending Queer Party in WORM. Campaigns for equality in diversity. The seventh episode of Architecture City is called Lessons from Johan Niegeman. Starting point of this show is the work of Dutch architect Johan Niegeman, one of the few Dutch teachers at Bauhaus who, together with Mart Stam, designed and build several social housing projects in the Soviet Union. Niegeman attempted to design a better quality of housing for the masses, specifically groups that lived in poor conditions, in particular working class citizens. He believed designers should always design for the most precarious citizens in society. The University of Applied Arts in Arnhem initiated a project in 2018 based on this idea. The project is called Designing for Precarious Citizens in which three contemporary designers took upon the challenge to translate Niegeman’s ideas to today’s society. Artist Giuditta Vendrame, interaction designer Klasien van de Zandschulp and speculative designer Frank Kolkman all developed an installation aimed at three completely different precarious groups. All three designers took completely different approaches. Kolkman researched the consequences of the platform economy for social housing tenants. Van de Zandschulp considered people at home, specially in the kitchen, as a growing precarious group as a consequence of the growing automatization of the home. And lastly, Vendrame looked at the precariousness of people residing on water as an unstable ground for living conditions in relation to citizenship. All three designers will talk about their project, just as professor of product-design and interiorarchitecture Jeroen van den Eijnde to talk about this project.

Vrouw in de architectuur
Wat is de positie van vrouwen in de huidige architectuur praktijk? Architecture City vraagt het aan twee architecten die uit het buitenland kwam om in Nederland te studeren en te werken. Oana Rades, partner bij Shift Architecture Urbanism en Eva Pfannes van Ooze Architecture. Is er een verschil in opleiding en praktijk in het buitenland? Wat waren hun motieven om in Nederland te studeren? En wat zijn voor hen de grote verschillen in benadering tussen Nederlandse vrouwelijke architecten en vrouwelijke architecten in het buitenland?
Ook een eerdere generatie komt ruim aan bod in deze aflevering van Architecture City in een gesprek over Lotte Stam-Beese, stedenbouwkundige die haar inspiratie opdeed in het ‘moderne’ Rusland en Oost-Duitsland. Hanneke Oosterhof deed onderzoek naar het werk van Stam-Beese en vertelt in de uitzending hoe zij zich als vrouw staande hield in een ontwerppraktijk gedomineerd door mannen.
Tenslotte vertelt architect Afaina de Jong hoe zij de vertegenwoordiging van vrouwen in het architectuurklimaat in Nederland ziet ten opzichte van andere Europese landen en waarom zij zich in de uitoefening van haar beroep als feminist voordoet.

Kunsthal Rotterdam and Operator join forces on Friday 11 May for The Perfect Night. After a successful first edition focusing on the work of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, this 11 May you can experience a meeting by night with hyperrealistic sculptures, a live talk show, cutting-edge performances and a fabulous party in the Kunsthalcafé.
From 21.30 to 23.30 hrs the exhibition Hyperrealism Sculpture will be the exciting setting for a broadcast by the young Rotterdam online radio platform Operator. The radio and Kunsthal programmers have combined to present an evening of art, performances and special guests. The focus this evening is on the hyperrealistic sculptures. These familiar human figures stimulate intimate reflection on human nature. Stand eye to eye with the artworks and discover what they do to you. Is this real? To pump up the alienation we have prepared something special for you. The artist Yvonne Beelen’s performance group Ytopia will surprise and stun you with performances in and around the exhibition during The Perfect Night.
Host of the evening is the Operator presenter Samira Ben Messaoud. One of the guests that she will interview from the Kunsthal during The Perfect Night is Non la décadence – well-known from the Gender Bending Queer Party in WORM. Campaigns for equality in diversity. Another special guest is Lotte Meret Effinger. This young and promising artist was spotted by the Kunsthal during the presentation of her work in the Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. Her video installation ‘Aufs neue zu fürchten, zu hoffen und zu begehren’ – which will be shown during The Perfect Night – unmistakably and uniquely visualises what the work in the exhibition Hyperrealism Sculpture is about.
