Sifu TW Smith | Finding the Path Thru KungFu: Recent Episodes

Sifu TW Smith

Sifu TW Smith shares his experiences and awareness through the KungFu. He began training in KungFu because he was lost as a young man, making the same ole mistakes, ending up in places he shouldn't have been. Thru rigorous martial art, combative and meditation training with US. Army classmates, he found a different path. "We practice KungFu to become a better person first and a better Martial Artist second."

In Chinese Martial Arts, you will hear the statements, you are too Yin, or, your mind is too Yang? How do you use, or decode that?

During this podcast I walk through the terms Yin and Yang and how they were used. When they became connected to a map, that followed the sun, and then later became the symbol we think of today.

If you would like to get the full Yin/Yang Map and a PDF Bullet List of the major points that I go through during this podcast, you can go to :

Fear comes in many shapes and colors. Some fears of our physical

well-being are engrained at a fundamental level, as described in

Maslow's Heirarchy of needs. Some fears are foreshadows of what pain and

discomfort would be like, the fear of falling, the fear of drowing, in

martial arts, the fear of getting hit.

The fear precedes an actual event, and if the fear is strong enough it

can immobilize us till we can't move or perform.

What about fears that there is no inherit risk to our physical being?

The fear of public speaking

The fear of making a mistake in front of audience

The fear of performing

The fear of looking silly

These fears put us at no physical risk, but puts our ego and self-worth

in the cross-hairs.

Some fears can be worked through by 'doing', you put yourself in a

position to be safe as possible and work on it, for example, the fear of

falling.

With fears of performing, whether as a painter, an actor, or a martial

artist, 'doing' will not be enough to achieve your highest level of

success. You can't 'do' painting, you have to 'be' a painter.

*What does it take to 'be' a painter, be a martial artist? I walk you

through step by step during this podcast.*

Remove 3 Barriers of Learning Martial Arts or Anything Else Recently I had posted a picture of me and Kian wrestling at the beach.

You can see that picture below.

It was a time where Kian was learning wrestling, and of course the

famous Shawn Michaels and UnderTaker are two of our favorites. I had

made the comment on the post that "You Don't Want to Be in Your Own Way"

while learning.

It stimulated some wonderful responses and a couple of questions.. ie.

"It would be great to get out of my own way when learning something, How

do you do it?"

That prompted this podcast. I have discussed how we learn motor skills

from more a biomechanical and bio-neurological perspective in episodes :

Being Smooth is one of the most important components of a practice. It

comes after we have developed the concepts of what we are trying to do

(memory and objective), then the biomechanics of how to do it, and the

correct alignment throughout our body..

After that, we delve into being smooth.

We will look at what a smooth practice demands of us physically and

mentally.

What part of the brain is primarily responsible for being smooth?

What is the number one ingredient for smoothness to be present?

What impact does smoothness have to people that practice for combat?

What influence does pacing have to looking for smoothness?

This week I will share stories of people who practice being smooth, and

get paid millions to do it. The "Why and The How" of Being Smooth..

*Tai Chi Chuan is a Peng Jin Chuan, Without Peng Jin There is No

Tai Chi Chuan*"

In Podcast of Tibetan KungFu #63:

I discuss a few minutes on this weeks meditation topic, Acceptance.

Then we investigate the main ingredient of Tai Chi Chuan, called Peng

Jin.

Acceptance

A primary emotional intelligence skill that we must all practice to

first have a realistic view of the circumstances and faces around us.

Consider all the other detrimental emotions we experience when we fail

to accept people and circumstances as they are, at this moment in time.

But it is the balance of Acceptance that is also critical. Because you

are personally responsible for certain things too.

Peng Jing

I put in more hour of research for this podcast that perhaps I have for

any other. Peng Jing was explained to me from a classical Chinese

perspective, which was difficult to understand, but do-able, and then

when I got hit with it a few times, and got hit when I didn't have it, I

accepted Peng Jing is something you better find, whether you understood

it or not.

Recently a student asked me to explain it, and this student likes

everything to be sorted in a nice, neat box. One rule, one tool.. and

Peng Jing is far from being neatly stored into a single box. It is one

of those concepts that :

Chinese Academic Scholars argue about it's original meaning.

The character itself bears out multiple meanings to be aware of.

It is a character that isn't used very often, so it leaves room for

non-corrected interpretations.

You can see when you understand it, but it is nearly invisible if you

don't.

It is both energetic expression, like "he looked very poised", and

It is a method of expression, or a number of techniques.

Far from being a neat, clean, sort into a box understanding.

Often I am asked if I can teach the Martial Tai Chi, often referred to

as Tai Chi Chuan. Martial Art is a term that can flex in meaning and

often lead to confusion.

So what does "Martial Arts" mean to you?

Health Practice

For some it is a style or system and they practice for health.

Some practice for understanding a philosophical structure of life and a

cultural experience.

ZhaoShu - Movie Kungfu

Others want to know what the movements do, and enjoy practice the

gestures of movement, but they are not interested getting striking or

getting struck, throwing or getting thrown, being the Purveyor of Pain.

Learning the Gestures of Martial Arts with delivering the force is often

what you see in the movies, in kungfu they call this 'ZhaoShu'.

This does help someone understand concepts of movement and is great for

creating a 'textured' or deeper understanding in the motor cortex, so

that your file called 'Single Whip' isn't just a motion with points of

precision, but there is feeling in it too.

Martial Combat

But to cross over to the Martial Combat Side, there is more to be done.

Civilian Self Protection and Para-Military Training have combative

aspects, but their objectives are very different. Certainly all versions

of combative sport have their objective which is much different than the

others as well.

It's not that one is better, or more right for you. It is a matter that

you know why you are practicing and that your practice matches up with

your intent.

Circulation is an Essential Function

All things that are defined as being 'Alive' have an essential function

called 'Circulation', in Biology it is referred to as the Transport

system, as things are moved from one place to another.

Circulation is essential to more than flesh and blood of creatures. Your

mindset and learning has to circulating to be alive. Transporting

knowledge, skill and understanding from Sifu to student, and then

students to students. Many systems and students prefer a 'spoon fed'

system. Without the circulation. When the spoon is gone, the student

withers away.

Iain

Abernethy is one of the most respected Karate experts in the world.

He is one of the people that organically discussed Karate Martial Arts

with the same practical concepts as Kung Fu was taught to me.

Since then he and I have become friends and in Podcast

of Tibetan Kungfu : Episode 46, one of my listeners asked a question

about Judo and Aikido. I gave my thoughts along with Lori O'Connell at Pacific

Wave JuJitsu, but Iain was out of country..

Well, when he got it, he sent me his audio recording to play for you.

The Natural Law of Dispersion

Throughout this planet things move from a greater concentration to a low

concentration, by ANY MEANS NECESSARY

In every form of medium:

Thermodynamics - Law 1 - Heat moves from hotter to cooler, everytime,

even if there nothing there except empty space.

Liquids - Diffusion and Osmosis

Gases - When you light a scented candle, and shortly after the whole

room carries the scent.

In our lives, common statements,

'You will become the

average of the 5 people you hang out with the most.'

'Guilty by association',

We all instinctively know that if you hang out with knuckleheads, it is

going to 'rub off' on you.

In Martial Arts

The character of a school, the context of what it is going to teach is

of greater concentration, the students absorb said qualities. You want

to make sure that they match up with what you want to learn, combat,

sport, health, lifestyle, or show for examples..

But make no mistake about it, Energetic Dispersion travels, it can lead

to a circulatory effect, where exchanges begin to occur and a whole

system of motion is underway.

Student moves to the Mid-West

What started as a simple meeting during the TKF

006 BaGua Cornerstones :

turned into a good student and new friendship. We will miss you Dawn. Be

safe in your travels and your pursuits :)

A Listener asks the following question :

"Good Evening Sifu,

*How have you been? I have really been enjoying the last couple of

podcasts that you put out about physiological learning and the physical

senses used in martial training. I am fascinated with the mind/body

connection. I also really enjoyed the ep 45 that included the

ingredients needed to master the arts(any).*

*I have heard about Aikido being the martial arts of "love"

(gentleman, philosopher, martial artist), lacking strikes and using the

opponents aggression against them. I even watched a documentary on it

last night. And, we have a martial arts center very close to my house

that teaches this and other styles.*

*But then I made a mistake of watching a video of Aikido vs Jui Jistu,

the Aikido practitioner didn't stand much of a chance.*

*What are your thoughts on this form? I am very interested in Bushido,

but am afraid that my life doesn't align with this life style.*

*Even if you don't have much to say about this, I would love if you

could give me a tip on where I could find a style that matches my

personality and life values. I really with that I lived in your neck of

the woods. I love you passion for the arts, and I your philosophy really

rings true to my spirit.*

Thanks ahead of time for your time.
Patrick"

I call on a couple of folks to weigh in :

Lori O'Connell : very sharp lady and I like her approach to martial

arts, She teaches Jiu Jitsu at Pacific

Wave Jiu Jitsu

and another a man from the UK, that I have gotten to know,

Iain Abernethy, he is a Karate man, and part of the World

Combat Association, an organization that promotes martial arts for

combat that I totally get on board with, because it is more aligned to

how I was trained in martial arts and so were my classmates in the early

90's.

Then I break down the question from my perspective, without my kungfu

bias... um, um... okay.. I little bias.. :)

Understanding the Phases that your body and mind go through to learn a

physical movement can help you identifty where and why to work on

different aspects.

This is not only martial arts, it could be anything from shuffling a

deck of card or playing twinkle-twinkle-little-star on the piano.

During this podcast I will discuss :

Onguards

How the "OnGuard Workshop" went on saturday and why it spawned this

podcast.

The importance of a "Martial Arts Onguard" versus a "Sporting / Boxing

Onguard"

Sciences of Learning Movement

Then we will look at the neurobiological development of movement..

The old Kungfu classics say "The Training of the Mind, must Precede

Training of the Body. Eventually Training of the Body will be Superior

to Training of the Mind."

What does that mean? Why is it important? How do you do it? When does it

apply?

I will share how Perceptual Skills are the same and different as

Physical Skills. How the learning phases are similar : of Learning

Phases

Declarative Phase : The 'What to Do' aka : I call 'snapshot phase'

Procedural Phase : The 'How to Do it' aka : I call 'soaking phase'

Plus how they both work in almost everybody. What you need to do to make

them work. What enhances the learning of movement.

Then the segway of When does a physical movement begin to get trained as

a martial art?

She was finding herself getting angry in her meditation

I recently had a student stop by that I haven't seen in months. She

wanted to discuss some current events that were spinning in her life.

She said that she was getting angry during her meditation.

I sketched out our discussion. I am a natural visual learner, so I

sketch objects, draw roads, bridges, exits, as we go, so I can see it.

Then we looked at it from a variety of perspectives.

"That is what your kungfu family is for."

Applying today’s Podcast to your practice:

  1. Recognize your fears, mental or emotional limitations. Adjust your expectations to where they are so small you have a chance, rather than being overwhelmed by the mountain you see.

  2. Apply that to something like exercise, or weight loss, or meditation. I set up the Buddha in Bluejeans audio meditations so you can use that as 5-7 minutes intro’s to your program.

  3. We all get embarrassed, feel like we failed. As a martial artist you expect to be challenged and expect difficulty. In life as well as forms, conditioning and sparring.

  4. Put emphasis on your effort, let the performance change. If you are making errors, adjust and move on.

  5. Practice being a better person first, and a better martial artist second.

Episode 29

Feeling Good:

Several people of various styles have contacted me to let me know that taking some of the concepts is helping them re-look at their karate, judo and other systems.

Connections:

Cameron Conaway’s essay in last episode, “5 Ways to Bring Mindfulness into Your Martial Arts” stimulated many excellent comments.

Cameron sent me a note saying that he has become a listener. He is also posted on his Twitter account of 22 thousand follower’s:

“Tibetan Kung Fu sifu TW Smith (@TibetanKungFu) offers a meditative, authentic podcast. Worth a listen. - http://bit.ly/1wYA3Eb #mindfulness”

Since I started learning more about Cameron,

He received NPR chose 5 books for their 2014 Best of Poetry Award, Cameron’s Malaria Poems is one those top 5. Congratulations and Thank You. Cameron, you are doing great work, most of all inspiring. Keep yourself going.

For more information on Cameron’s other Works such as :

Thank you to Scott and Roger for contributing directly to the Mook Chung. If you want to contribute directly, just earmark the dollars, or go to /Patreon, contribute there.

Past Week in Practice :

Yang 48 Tai Chi everywhere these days. The Reeling Silk has been working very well for Phillip and our “Wise One’s”. Lot of folks starting dipping into the power bucket. Even those that practice for health, because Alignment, Intention and Timing matter, as I will share shortly.

Todays Podcast:

How do we ‘accumulate’ Qi? What do we do to validate process and/or progress?

In Episode 27, we discussed the perspectives of defining Qi.

Using Those Definitions, How do we generate improvements in Qi?

Definitions:

  • Original Character : Rice Pot sitting on fire, steam rising, lid on the pot opening and closing.
  • Life Force : Tangible compliments Intangible, Yin and Yang
  • Biologically
  • Biomechanically
    • Jessica Rose - Biomechanics researcher at Stanford weighs in on analysis of Bruce Lee Punch.

In the : Bring Mindfulness into Your Martial Arts Podcast

Original Essay by Cameron Conaway

Acknowledgements:

I was working out on multiple assailant strategies. While I was sucking

wind and recovering, Lynn took the time to tell me that Episode 27,

"Talk on Qi gave her a lot to think about".

Jean told posted that she had "attended our Harmonizing Sex Drive

Workshop and it was the perfect reminder of taking care of yourself

first and the rest will follow."

Garner Fire Dept Event : http://garnerfire.com/2014_photos

They raised $15,000 to help burn victims in the hospital. Say 'Thank You

to a Fireman'.

Announcements:

  • Program Announcements near the end.

  • Couple of edit issues in last episode because I wanted to make sure it

got out on time.. Why did I put it out anyway?

My Top Priority is to be as consistent as possible, just like in

practice. Some may be better than others. The effort is to provide

quality information first, (practice with good intent), be consistent as

possible, then performance..

Reid went to see Bruce in Charlotte, and together they did the Reeling

Silk Tai Chi with the Veterans. Yesterday during the Free Monday

Meditation Class at 11:30, we did a meditation on 'Creating Room for

Your Thoughts'. Reid feels that it will be great for the Veterans, so I

will record some bumpers and edit for them. Will send it to you Reid and

Bruce, probably through dropbox.

I exchanged a few emails with Cameron and I asked if I could share the

essay with you. I hope you find it as worthwhile as I did.

Setting the stage:

Qi ( 氣 ) is a word that carries many

meanings. All trying to capture it's essence in english and there is

really not one. The character itself is derived from rice in pot with

steam rising from it.

Perspectives of Chi

There are many forms of Qi. (Chi, Ki, Prana most say theoretically same

thing) I define Qi :

Using the character meaning to demonstrate how complex cooking rice can

be if you want to make it complicated, or how simple.

Energetic View (Energy)

Physiological View (Life Force)

Biomechanical View (Effeciency)

Giving three various way how to see it. Eventually you will see they all

the same. :)

Thank you Ray Walters and Nyle for endorsing us in Martial Arts

and Wellness at Linkedin. It is great to hear from you Ray. Been a long

while. Many of the old timers like Reid, Dwight and Patrick ask about

you.

Workshop on Push Hands has stimulated several questions. This weekend is

our Push

Hands Workshop , we will be working fundamentals of framework,

alignment, sensing and intention. I look forward to it.

The Pumpkin Carving is this weekend too, I am here all day, so bring it

when you ready :)

Hop Gar Video Trailor

The Hop Gar Trailor I recently put out on Facebook, Vimeo,

DailyMotion

and Youtube,

was a fun project I put together over the weekend. I took several photo

I had of myself and others practicing Hop Gar around 1992 at the Golden

Dragon resturaunt.

There was about 5 of us that regular rotated

in full contact beat downs out on the asphalt. Hot asphalt is a GREAT

way to teach you to move and stay on your feet to fight.

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Oct 27, 1995

I had already another topic laid out and the memory came back. Not sure

what triggers it, but it is a solemn reminder to practice and live

strong.

Being a dad now, the memories are even more intense.

I changed to work in Fayetteville so that I could practice KungFu more.

I worked in the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab department with some fine

folks. My schedule was simple for years. Get up at 5, chikung, posting

and breakfast. work, go to the Golden Dragon to practice from 5:30 - 9

or so, come home, crash, do again. Saturdays I got to practice from 7 -

  1. Sundays sometimes we would take turns hosting practice at homes. Went

on for years.

Oct 27 1995, Normal Day, My office was down the hall from new Outpatient

Entrance, Fast access to hospital. Then the alert :

Hero's

The shooter hit and wounded 17 soldiers from the division's 325th

Airborne Infantry Regiment as they left an athletic field. He shot three

other soldiers who tried to stop him, wounding two and killing Maj.

Stephen Badger.

Order Amidst Chaos

During those intense hours that day, I remember very clearly what looked

like chaos. It reminded me of a MASH episode where Hawkeye and Trapper

are working triage for wounded soldiers. Yet there was a very firm

steadiness. I knew my priorities :

  • Help stop bleeding
  • Ease pain where I could
  • Provide comfort and support

Those 3 simple emphasis for me, kept order in the chaos.

Why Do I share this memory with you?

It occured because of my committment to train to be a better person with

kungfu. I made life changing decisions that put me in the position that

day.

That your experiences can teach you what is important, and what is of

lesser importance.

Lesson to take today

Life is short and can change in an instant.

Find time to be grateful for someone or something while you are here.

"We may not all agree on the politics that are involved, but I encourage

you to agree on supporting those young men that put their lives on the

line, both abroad and at home to provide us with the freedom to be happy

and to complain."

Get out today, practice, remember someone. If you were any way

associated with the events of that day and hear my message today. I

would like to hear from you. If there is anything I can do, I will.

Resources For Today :

The only resources I want to list for this episode is :

"I support and ask you to contribute a couple dollars to the Wounded Warrior Project. I wrote them the following :

I am releasing a podcast this wednesday, Oct 22, 2014 to our growing

community. It is in regards to my involvement in the Oct 27,1995

shooting on base. I will be asking listeners today and for years to come

to donate directly to the Wounded Warrior Project.

I just wanted

to let you know :)

www.tibetankungfu.net"
Sifu TW Smith

Don't let me down. Whether you are listening this in 2014, 2020, or long

after I am dead. I greatly appreciate you sending even a single dollar

to those who need our support.

Chinese Martial Art Curriculum

Often we are asked about an Overview of what we do here. Over the course

of years I was trained in many styles and understandings. All the

systems point back to the same root, you.

You practice Kung Fu not to perfect a style, but to master yourself.

Regardless of your reason for practice, this will show up.

This takes time to grasp in your heart, but then the understanding that

it is all the arts "two hands and two feet" really resonates.

Principles that Drive the Curriculum : www.tibetankungfu.net/curriculum

During the process we will teach you and show you how every system and

style originates from:

  • All movement begins in the seed of stillness
  • Training of the mind always precedes training of the body
  • 3 directions of your centerline
  • 8 expressions of movement
  • combining these and changing whether they are practiced bilaterally,

or in various directions all alter the one original expression

Students of the kwoon and many of the private students begin with

foundational processes of calming, centering, self awareness and health.

They venture from there. Occassionaly a student wants to begin on a

particular path, like Yang

Tai Chi or Ba

Gua and they explore from there.

Transition from a busy day, to a calm one

Is going from 100 to 1 causing a mental "JackKnife and Pileup"?

Been there, MANY times :)

  • How to Transition from a Busy Day using Mindful Tai Chi and Ba Gua
  • Avoid "Mental JackKnife" by hitting the brakes too hard
  • How does Meditation fit into Martials Arts?
  • If you practice Hop Gar or Southern Style Choy Li Fut here with me

This episode brings us to an almost seasonal concern that students don't

feel they have enough time to practice. A busy life makes it hard to

make the time, but even when you do make it.

How do you transition from "Warp Speed" to "Calm Body and Mind"?

My clinical and corporate experience gave me an excellent opportunity to

learn how. Avoid the "Mental JackKnife" that can occur if you go from

100 to 1. :)

Why do a Summary?

Something that I look for on podcasts, but don't find often. A summary

of recent activities or "wake" helps me generate perspective.

What have we done so far? How have We Done?

This type of review also reminds me of something I intended to do.. and

ooops, I forgot.

My son and I spoke about his organizational skills. Then we pause a

moment and assess how is current effort and techniques are working.

It is so easy to get caught up in our current frustrations, focused on

current barriers, demands of our time, that *we forget what we have

worked through*. Where we have made progress and we can see motion if

we take time to look.

This applies to work, home, learning bagua, understanding a strategy,

performing a technique, I encourage you to take a moment and assess.

So, to practice what I am encouraging.

Thank You Dawn for your recent kind Facebook

comment,

"Wow! Another treasure! I am happy and so very grateful to know that the

wisdom and lessons you are sharing, both in the podcasts and in the

TKF 009 Cut through the Chaos

4 Steps to Getting thru the Fog of Life

Getting through the Fog of Chaos in 4 steps is a Podcast that resonated with me as a Maritime Meditation long ago. It is the narrative story of facts how SeaMen navigated the sea’s before 1100 AD. The magnet compass was created in 206 BC, but not implemented into sea navigation until 1107 AD.

There are 4 steps that I share with you to:

  • recognize your situation

  • assess your status and contributing factors

  • orientate yourself even though you can’t see through your senses and experience

  • choose a new direction

KungFu was practiced upon ship decks, particularly in Southern China. With visibility less than 100 yards, knowing how to survive when you were lost at sea wasn’t just theory.

You will learn which questions to ask and to avoid asking until later. Also I will share with you what real illusions that you must be aware of when you get lost in a fog.

For my students, I take you through the Maritime Meditation, which is about a half hour to walk you through step by step, liven your senses and teaches you how to Captain your own ship.

Let me know if this episode has meaning for you, please :) Sharing helps others as well.

I really appreciate your review.

We often get lost in the what appears to be “separate issues”. With some reflection, and “Quieting the Heart”, we can find thread that will point to Common Denominators.

When learning kungfu, whether for martial, medical or health, you have to be able to slow your mind down enough to see the links.

In a story with Ava, you will see how she realizes their is a connection and then learns how to explore it deeper.

How we find the common denominator can vary, thats why I take each person individually in the journey. However, the tools we use to get there are similar, Tai Chi, Chi Kung, BaGua Walking, and Quiet the Heart meditation.

During this episode is the story of Ava, a young lady that pauses in her life to ask "why do I keep finding myself in these unpleasant situations?"

This triggers investigating ourselves, without judgement, but awareness.

Essential BaGua Components

Bagua is one of the most unique Chinese Martial Arts. Before that, two components were part of the famous meditative Taoist Quan Zhen practice, dating back to 1170 AD.

This week’s episode is to share a summary of BaQua as it relates to the Martial Art and to it’s original components. I also wanted to address FAQ regarding the upcoming workshop in July.

Attached is a recording of me going through a BaGua Chikung workout at 4:30 am, before the day begins. There is a link where you can download the workout as a separate mp3.

I am excited about the privilege to be a guest speaker with Excel4Apps again this year. We will be discussing “Excelling with Balance”. A principle that is utilized in kungfu to keep us safe, while moving forward.

There is a summary of history that comes from one of the best known researchers of BaGua Zhang, Professor Wang Ge Wu.

We announce the upcoming KungFuPodcasts.com show. With it’s much broader scope and planning to history, culture, medicine and other influences of the Chinese Martial Arts.

Your feedback is welcome at www.tibetankungfu.net/contact/.

How do you keep your mind strong during adverse situations?

Good Kung Fu emphasizes training your mind as much as training your body.

If your habits and techniques are the bricks that create your action structure,

then your thoughts and confidence is the mortar.

The strength you need during difficult times will not be in the brick, it is in the glue.

With a system of mindful motion through styles such as Tai Ji and Ba Gua, students become aware of Phase 1, Stabilize the Mind.

There is a story about Trent, who learned his techniques were not enough.

Main ingredients for training your mind.

How you can use Chinese Martial Art or other practices to gain confidence during the challenging times.

Thank You for Reading through this. I would really appreciate our review or feedback.
