In this episode of the Vegan Visibility Podcast, Dr. Lisa Kemmerer, an animal activist, philosopher, and author, engages in a thought-provoking conversation about her book "Amore and Vegan Ethics." As a retired philosophy professor, Lisa shares insights into her acronym "AMORE," which encapsulates the core moral reasons for adopting a plant-based lifestyle.

She starts with "A" for animal suffering, delving into the ethical considerations surrounding the treatment of animals in various industries, with a focus on dairy farming. Moving on to "M" for medical, Lisa explores the health benefits of a plant-based diet, emphasizing its positive impact on preventing diseases like cancer and heart-related issues.

The discussion then turns to "O" for oppression, where Lisa highlights the interconnectedness of social justice issues with veganism, addressing aspects such as world hunger, workforce conditions in animal agriculture, and the environmental impact.

The "R" in AMORE takes us into the realm of religion, where Lisa unpacks how different religious traditions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Eastern religions, align with or challenge the principles of veganism. She emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing the religious perspectives of individuals to foster meaningful conversations.

Finally, Lisa covers "E" for the environment, breaking down the environmental consequences of animal agriculture, including soil degradation, deforestation, climate change, water pollution, and fresh water reduction.

Throughout the conversation, Lisa provides valuable insights for activists, encouraging a thoughtful and considerate approach to advocacy. She shares personal experiences, recommends strategic conversations based on individual beliefs, and stresses the significance of education in creating awareness about the moral reasons behind adopting a plant-based lifestyle.

In this episode of the Vegan Visibility Podcast, I am talking with Zoe Weil, co-founder and president of the Institute for Humane Education (IHE). In this enlightening conversation, we delve deep into the transformative power of humane education and solutionary thinking.

One central theme we explored was the incredible evolution of humane education since the late '80s. Zoe's journey began with a simple summer job teaching middle school students about animal issues, which turned out to be a pivotal moment in her life. It was during this experience that she witnessed the profound impact of education on young minds.

One standout student, in particular, learned about the harsh realities of animal testing and, driven by sheer determination, handwrote leaflets to raise awareness. Instead of distributing them to classmates, he took them to the streets of Philadelphia, becoming an overnight activist. This moment marked the beginning of Zoe's realization of the profound capacity of education to inspire action and create change.

This epiphany led Zoe to become a humane educator, dedicated to teaching about the interconnected issues of human rights, animal protection, and environmental sustainability. Through her journey, she founded the Institute for Humane Education, where they empower others to become humane educators and integrate humane education into school curricula.

Today, Zoe's programs and initiatives reach students worldwide, empowering them to be solutionaries who can address the most pressing global challenges. It's a journey brimming with hope and determination, recognizing the potential of young people to drive meaningful change in the world.

In our podcast episode, we discuss the progress and challenges in animal welfare since the '80s, the pivotal role of education in shaping a brighter future, and how individuals can contribute to creating more compassionate and sustainable systems.

I wholeheartedly invite you to embark on this enlightening journey of discovery and action. Listen to the full episode here: www.veganvisibility.com/265-Zoe-Weil

Laura Katleman, Founder of Bhur Foods, shares her journey from being a vegetarian for many years to becoming a vegan. She describes how her eating habits evolved over time, starting from giving up beef, then chicken, seafood, and finally all animal products.

The Catalyst for Going Vegan

Laura’s transition to veganism wasn't a conscious decision but rather an evolution. As she became more health-conscious and her health practitioners advised her against consuming dairy, eggs, and other animal products, she naturally phased them out of her diet.

Embracing the Vegan Identity

Laura doesn’t strongly identify with the “vegan” label. She believes that being vegan works well for her body and her spiritual practice, making her feel lighter and more at ease, but avoids labels. For her, veganism is more of a personal journey than an identity she loudly proclaims.

Filling the Gap with Vegan Sweets

Laura noticed a lack of healthy vegan sweets in the market, which inspired her to start her company, Bhu Foods. She wanted to offer people transitioning away from sugar and animal products an alternative that allowed them to indulge in delicious treats without compromising their health.

Meet Benjamin (Ben) Hagerty, a passionate traveler and co-manager of the travel blog, It's Bree and Ben, alongside his wife, Brianne Nemiroff. Their journey goes beyond typical travel experiences as they explore sustainable tourism and embrace a vegan business philosophy.

Through their platform, they offer valuable insights, travel guides, and essays about vegan and plant-based travel, making a positive impact on fellow travelers seeking mindful and sustainable adventures.

Benjamin's love for flavors and dishes associated with a vegan diet began during his upbringing in the vibrant San Francisco Bay area. However, it wasn't until 2015 that he and his wife, Bree, decided to fully embrace the vegan lifestyle after a one-week trial. To their delight, they felt great after abstaining from meat, prompting them to transition gradually into a vegan way of life.

In 2017, after tying the knot, Benjamin and Bree embarked on an extraordinary road trip adventure across the U.S. and Canada. Their year-long journey became a unique blend of travel and work, as Benjamin continued to work remotely as a travel consultant while documenting vegan-friendly places for their website.

Their travel experiences uncovered surprising vegan-friendly areas in unexpected places. Along the way, they encountered vibrant vegan communities in St. Louis and Kansas City, showcasing innovative and creative approaches to veganism beyond the West Coast and New England.

Inspired by their journey, Benjamin and Bree established their website, It's Bree and Ben. Beyond just providing information on vegan-friendly restaurants and venues, they aim to promote mindful and sustainable travel practices that align with vegan philosophy.

As part of his graduate school project, Benjamin conducted extensive research, uncovering four key areas of concern that shape the experiences of individuals and businesses in the vegan entrepreneurship niche. These areas include the impetus of health and well-being, the framework of inclusivity, facing "vegan phobia" and discrimination, and the cost of doing vegan business.

Despite the challenges faced by vegan entrepreneurs, Benjamin and Bree honor the vegan lifestyle, viewing it not just as a dietary choice but as a way of life encompassing compassion, environmental consciousness, and empathy. Through It's Bree and Ben, they share valuable insights into exploring the world through a compassionate lens, appreciating the abundance of experiences that a vegan lifestyle can offer.

Their journey exemplifies the profound connection between sustainable tourism, veganism, and mindful travel. As a community, we can support and uplift compassionate entrepreneurs like Benjamin and Bree while making conscious choices that positively impact the world around us.

In this special episode of the Vegan Visibility Podcast, I dig deep with author Chrissy Melanie Benson about her novel, "Marrying Myself."

This unique book intertwines the themes of veganism and activism, offering readers a thought-provoking narrative that sheds light on animal rights and the power of personal choices.

In this episode, we delve into Chrissy's vegan journey, her decision to incorporate activism into her writing, and the challenges and triumphs she experienced throughout the publishing process.

A Vegan Awakening:

Chrissy's journey towards veganism began as a committed vegetarian. At the time, she was unaware of the harsh realities of factory farming and the conditions in which animals were kept. However, as she began to learn more about the suffering endured by animals, particularly egg-laying hens, she felt a growing discomfort with her own participation in these industries.

Recognizing the misalignment between her actions and her values, Chrissy made the pivotal decision to become vegan in 2011. Although she initially found it challenging to navigate a world seemingly saturated with non-vegan options, her conviction and dedication to animal rights continued to strengthen.

On this episode of the Vegan Visibility show, we had the pleasure of hosting Omaid Hiwaizi, a veteran in technology marketing and an ethical vegan for almost three decades. Omaid is the founder of ReFarm Fund, a novel project aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices that align environmental impact with farmers' profitability.

Throughout the show, Omaid shared his journey of blending his passion for veganism with his expertise in technology and fintech. He discussed his concern about the challenges faced by small-scale farmers, the rise of industrial factory farming, and the significant environmental footprint of animal farming.

Omaid commissioned a study which demonstrated that a transition from animal and intensive farming to rotation-based arable farming and tree planting could result in a higher return on capital, even with potentially lower output, due to decreased input costs. Inspired by these findings, Omaid and his team are developing a loan product to support farmers in making this transition.

The ReFarm Fund will provide farmers with the necessary capital to implement changes like adopting regenerative agriculture, installing renewable energy sources, and establishing structures like polytunnels and large glasshouses powered by renewable energy. The loan will be commercial, but the environmental impact of their transition will be quantified, potentially reducing their loan payments.

He shares a humorous anecdote about his inaugural experience with a meatless snack and reveals the eye-opening realization about animal cruelty and the nutritional capacity of plants that catalyzed his switch to veganism.

Cognitive Dissonance and the Reality of Meat Consumption: Brett underscores the cognitive dissonance prevalent in society when it comes to meat consumption. He advocates for a better understanding of the realities of meat production and consumption, encouraging people to embrace more peaceful, kind, and compassionate lifestyles, starting with their dietary choices.

One moment in time can change everything. For Sabrina Fair Andronica, the moment happened when she was deciding what to order for lunch at a local restaurant. As she looked at the menu, she saw a vegetarian sandwich among all the chicken, beef and pork choices.

“Why would I choose meat when I claim to love animals so much,” crossed her mind.

It was in that moment in 2004 she realized that her actions and words needed to align fully.

During our conversation, we talk about her choice to identify as vegan, her love of animals, how she came to do her animal activism by writing children’s book, and her blue nose pit, who teaches her every day, what’s on the outside is often a mask of something very different.

Sabrina is an activist at heart and loves sharing her passion through her children’s books.

Her books include…

Adventures At Rainbow Bridge is a beautifully illustrated book about the importance of accepting ourselves and accepting each other.

Labrador Retriever with the Block Head is a graceful and familiar story about unconditional love from a deserving rescue pitbull changing one family's world, and our own illusions

Cruelty-Free is the Way to Be! Is a book on a mission to show that kindness to all sentient beings is the greatest act of compassion one can express.

Imagine being able to combine the passion of animal safety with your passion of travel. Until

now, it was almost unheard of. Leading the way, Faik Bouhrik combined his love of business, animals, sanctuaries and travel together to create The Vegan Stay.

At a time when veganism is becoming more than a mindset and a lifestyle and one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy, large corporations that have profited from the suffering of animals by treating them as mere commodities are primed to take full advantage of this new trend.

During Faik’s time volunteering at Animal Sanctuaries in America, he was able to learn about the work these organizations do and the unique challenges the people behind them face, day in and day out.

Animal Sanctuaries,  he realized, play a crucial role not only in rescuing animals in need from horrific exploitation but also in educating the general public about the need to see the animals for the sentient beings they truly are.

During this episode, Faik Bouhrik and Kathleen Gage, host of The Vegan Visibility Podcast talk about what keeps Faik inspired, the challenges and his vision for the future of The Vegan Stay.

Author M. C. Ronen (Maya Cohen-Ronen) is a New Zealand based vegan, feminist, and animal rights activist. She wrote The Liberation Trilogy out of disappointment at being unable to find mainstream books that avoid banal mentions of animal cruelty acts and/or everyday speciesism. Her deliberate intention was to create an exciting, fast-paced, page-turning fiction series that has a clear ethical undertone and message with a potential appeal to a wide range of readers.

M.C. Ronen has always been a book junkie. She loves fast-paced, suspenseful thrillers, full of plot-twists and cliff-hangers that made her heart race is her preference.

Upon going vegan she discovered to her surprise and dismay that she could no longer enjoy books as she did before.

Suddenly she could no longer find any reading material – at least, not anything that was 'safe'. Now, every book she picked up, whether recommended to her by a friend, promoted on mainstream media, a best seller, or randomly picked up in the bookstore – every book there was seemed to ooze with at least one of the following: Speciesism, animal cruelty or even blatant anti-vegan sentiments.

Slowly she found herself reading less and less. The wonderful door to a universe of imaginary worlds was closing.

Around 2016 she made a decision - if it didn't exist, she would write it myself!

This was the catalyst for The Liberation Trilogy being born.

During this episode of the Vegan Visibility Podcast, M.C. Ronen and I dig deep into what led her down the path of writing that she is on. Writing is just one of the many ways she is an animal activist.

Most people know they have to be visible, but when it comes to taking the actions needed they freeze.

It might be due to not knowing what to do, wondering how you'll look on camera, not clear on your messaging, or fear of making a mistake.

Enter the Queen of Livestreaming, Stephanie Redcross-West. Stephanie is a master and breaking down the complex into very useable steps.

During our conversation, VLynn Hawkins and I talk with Stephanie about what's most important and what people will learn during the Vegan Visibility Summit.

This is a must attend session during the summit where you will discover how simple it actually is.

Livestreaming: Your Secret to Connecting, Convincing & Converting Your Community

The idea of going live can be terrifying for many–myself included. With live streaming, it's just you and a camera, unedited and exposed to the world, saying, "This is me and this is how I do things."

Trust me. I get it–livestreaming is definitely intimidating. The first few times can feel a little like walking on a tightrope without a safety net to catch you if you fall.

But this vulnerability is exactly why livestreaming is so effective. As soon as you see how it allows you to develop a real connection with your community, you'll realizing why pushing past your discomfort is worth it.

Livestreaming is the best way to cut through the noise and gain visibility. It allows you to start a dialogue between you, your brand and your community. You can start talking to your customers instead of talking at them, which is a game changer.

Many people erroneously believe that 50% of businesses fail within the first year. Yet, this is not necessarily true.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates that approximately 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years of being open, 45% during the first five years, and 65% during the first 10 years. Only 25% of new businesses make it to 15 years or more.

Many people believe it has to do with the economy, not enough money to market, not knowing what to do or the market being too saturated. The fact is, one of the main reasons for business failure is failure to master the sales conversation.

In this episode of the Vegan Visibility show, we talk with mindset, sales coach, Trevor Banerjee. Trevor specializes in working with entrepreneurs on the limiting believes they have around sales.

Trevor is one of the esteemed experts of the 2nd Annual Vegan Visibility Summit.

This was, in his words, the best diagnosis ever as it led him to look inwards for true meaning and joy. Over the last 10 years Trevor has taken his business experience and applied it to the service of the vegan and conscious business community.

A qualified life coach, an NLP practitioner, an author and founder of The Freedom Switch, a vegan startup launch agency, Trevor is also a motivational speaker, having spoken to audiences in 4 continents.

One decision can change our lives in ways we never consider. Such was the case when I chose to become a plant-based eater. Making the change for health reasons, it took only a few months for me to realize it was so much more than that.

When I crossed the invisible line into identifying as vegan, so much transformed in my life.

Veganism is so much more than a diet. It is, first and foremost, about compassion to the animals.

Hear part of my journey over the last four years when I made one decision that shifted my life forever.

From student to entrepreneur, Jelena Vukcevic, is a trailblazer in her own right.

She started in 2014 organizing events for the biggest student entrepreneur club in Switzerland as the VP of marketing and growing the community of student entrepreneurs.

Shortly after joining the entrepreneur club, she and her team organized the Fu*ck Up Nights. Based on the premise that anything is possible, the event was mentioned in several newspapers across Switzerland. In 2018, Jelena co-founded together the Swiss chapter of Women Techmakers with three other driven women.

Women Techmakers is a global initiative from Google for women in tech. Just a few months after the launch, Jelena organized, together with her co-founders, the biggest hackathon for women only. Like previous events Jelena led the way on, this too was featured in the local newspaper of Zurich.

After successfully building communities in different niches, Jelena founded her current community of vegan businesswomen in September 2021. The mission of Lady V community is to support, guide and mentor vegan women to grow their businesses by organizing expert talks, community meetups, goal-setting workshops, and much more.

What do you get when you have a passionate New Yorker who LOVES pizza and is VEGAN? You get a man on a mission to create a high-quality, vegan pizza cheese to not only satisfy his love of pizza, but also do his part to raise awareness about caring for the planet.

As CEO of Pleese Foods, Kobi Regev has not only set out to make the most delicious and appealing plant-based cheese on the market, but he’s also dedicated himself and his company to giving back in meaningful ways.

For every case of Pleese Cheese sold, Pleese donates a tree to be planted by the National Forest Foundation, a cause that’s close to Kobi’s heart.

Both Kobi and his wife are on this journey together. Seeing an opportunity in the lack of quality vegan pizza options available when they switched to a plant-based diet in 2014, they’ve made it their mission to offer a healthy, tasty cheese option for vegans and nonvegans alike.

Vegan Marketing Success Stories is taking the vegan business world by storm. A first of its kind, Vegan Marketing Success Stories highlights the marketing tactics of many of today’s most successful vegan businesses.

With 47 contributors and dozens of other vegan companies mentioned as examples, the non-fiction book shares how on- and off-line tactics contribute to a cohesive strategy and topical issues that few marketing books are talking about: the importance of diversity and inclusion, what vegan businesses did to weather the pandemic, and how some have transitioned to becoming vegan.

“In 2021, I researched whether there was a book about marketing for the vegan industry. When I discovered one didn’t exist, I knew I had to publish it,” says Nomoto, a vegan content writer and editor since 2020 who operates as The Content Doctor.

She continues: “This book would not have been possible without the stories of the 47 contributors and other vegan companies around the world.”

Contributors include executives of Benji Vegan Gourmet, Blue Tribe, Goddess Garden, Immaculate Vegan, Remeant, Vegan Business Tribe, Vegans, Baby, Vegan Supply, and We Animals Media.

Other companies and individuals featured in Vegan Marketing Success Stories include Alpha Foods, Alpro, Atlas Monroe, Bad Manners, Heather Landex, Kathleen Gage of Vegan Visibility, Mid-Day Squares, NutritionFacts.org, Switch4Good, The Body Shop, THIS, and VFC.

The book is endorsed by Victoria Moran, Chief Compassion Officer of Main Street Vegan Academy, Erik Amundson, Co-Founder of Vevolution, Claire Smith, vegan entrepreneur and impact investor at Beyond Investing, Katrina Fox, Founder of Vegan Business Media and author of Vegan Ventures, and Stephanie Redcross West, Managing Director of Vegan Mainstream, among others.

It’s likely you follow a few influencers. Men and women who have massive followings, they are witty, insightful and seem to be made for the stage.

Experts you admire and yet, more than once, you’ve wondered what they did to gain the following they have.

One thing is for sure, the great majority of well-known influencers started out as complete unknowns.

Unknowns who somehow, someway, went from total obscurity and likely struggling financially, to world renowned, financially successful public figures.

Influencers are often the people we choose to invest our money with for products and services. Amazingly, the two may go hand in hand. The more you follow an influencer, the more you tend to trust them.

In the past, people were much more inclined to make buying decisions without putting much thought into their decision. Yet, today, due to the downturn in the economy, the pandemic and so much global uncertainty, many people are more cautious about their buying decisions.

What most people might consider a problem, is what Rym Selmi, founder of MiiRO, sees as an opportunity to create a solution.

This is exactly how MiiRO came into existence.

MiiRO is a vegan-owned company offering plant-based chocolates and baking goodies sure to satisfy the most discriminating sweet treat connoisseurs.

What started as Rym needing a solution for her own health, and the health of her children, turned into Rym’s obsession with finding the perfect, guilt-free treats her customers have come to trust for their incredible taste.

From Plant-Based to Vegan

Rym initially identified as a plant-based eater seven years go. After two weeks being dairy free, she had such incredible results in the way she felt, she explored other aspects of a plant-based diet.

After researching various food options, she realized there was more to what she tapped into than simply the elimination of dairy.

She had the same questions many plant-based lifestylists and vegans ask such as, “How do I handle family get togethers, social environments and pushback from those who don’t understand why someone would give up the standard American diet?”

Difficulty Turns into Wonder

When she began her plant-based journey she had a difficult time finding some of her favorite foods like ice cream and chocolate that were dairy free. Rym’s desire to create healthy alternatives was the beginning of what was to become MiiRO.

The name comes from Latin and means “to wonder.” Simply put, it means you are transported to another time and place.

She chose the name to reminder herself to be fully present during those moments of joy. For most, eating chocolate is a moment of pure joy.

Rarely does one have the opportunity to sit down with a true pioneer and legend of the vegan movement.

I had this unique experience when I talked with Light, Co-Founder of Gentle World, the “vegan intentional” organization which became a 501(c)(3) non profit educational organization in 1981.

Vegan intentional, simply means being vegan with pure intention of compassion, love and kindness.

It is obvious Light, a quiet, soft-spoken man, whose life has impacted countless men and women, teens and youth by his gentle wisdom, lives this philosophy in all he does.

It all started with the first full-length vegan cookbook in the United States: The Cookbook for People Who Love Animals.

Written during a time most people had no idea what a vegan was, nor what vegans stood for, this book has led the charge of healthy, compassionate eating.

Even publishers were resistant to using the term vegan in books since very few people had any idea what it meant.

Despite this, The Cookbook for People Who Love Animals has sold well over 100,000 copies since it was first published.

What happens when you have a small team of creatives on a mission to make a positive impact on the world? Those who are creating the best work for their clients while staying 100% aligned with their vegan values? You get a dedicated team at companies like Kakadu Creative.

When I sat down with Kayleigh Nicolaou, co-owner of Kakadu Creative, to learn more about what makes her, and the entire creative team tick, she didn’t leave me wondering where she stood on the issue of the health, the environment and animal compassion as a vegan led company.

Without a doubt, there is a trend in business where like-minded people are choosing to do business with those who fully understand their values, commitment to the animals, climate healing and the animals.

Yet, the concern for those still in the “vegan closet” is that if they are too vocal about being a vegan led and driven organization, they will lose business.

They question, “Will we lose business? What will people think? Is there a big enough market reach?” due to the whispered warnings of family, friends, and well-meaning colleagues.

Yet, unable to shake the inner calling to proudly announce to the world they are a vegan driven company, more every day, businesses of every size and description are heeding the call.

For the majority of companies who make this decision they realize it is likely one of the best choices they ever made.

If you’re like many people, you have a bucket list. There’s a good chance a dream trip is on the list.

One of the most popular dream trips is an African Safari. The type of safari where you drive from one destination point to another while snapping pictures of the extraordinary animals roaming the beautiful landscape.

Yet, there is often a disconnect when one enjoys the awe-inspiring animals while out in the bush only to sit down to a meal with the very animals that caused admiration earlier in the day.
One doesn’t have to look far to find impala, kudu, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, and many other exotic animals on the menu of many restaurants throughout Africa.

This type of trip is more of a nightmare than a dream trip for vegans.

One man who is flying high to change this is long-time pilot, JC De Klerk. Passionate about flying, veganism and introducing others to the mysteries of Africa, JC is on a mission to change the face what it means to experience an African Safari… the Vegan way.

JC De Klerk specializes in memorable safari holidays that are vegan and stress free. This is the very reason he founded Air Safaris.

Artist! The word conjures up all sorts of images. For Jasmine Leyva, “Jas” to her friends, the word artist only begins to describe this multi-talented woman.

Unapologetically an artist, Jas was born in D.C., a city that used to be more appreciative of doctors, lawyers, and politicians.

After she realized Los Angeles would open up opportunities for college and her dream to get into film, Jas relocated to the West Coast. With a Bachelor of Arts in TV, Film and Media and a Master of Fine Arts in screenwriting, Jas’ resume boasts amazing accomplishments including working as an associate producer on the NAACP winning docuseries entitled, Unsung.

From there, Jas was given the opportunity to write and produce on Being, a docuseries highlighting dynamic entertainers in film and music.

Happy to be doing what she loved, but simultaneously unhappy about putting that passion into someone else’s vision, Jas decided to let go of her nine-to-five and come into her own reign of pure artistry.

Her philosophy is, “no limits and no boss except for her own creativity.”

Jas went on to star in commercials and print ads for major brands like Nissan, Sony, Apple, Uber, American Express, Diesel, BlackPeopleMeet, Credit Sesame, Michelle Watches, Elle magazine and more.

Jasmine and Kenny Leyva produced their own feature length documentary, The Invisible Vegan, a film that chronicles Jasmine’s personal experience with Plant-Based eating.

The film also explains how Plant-Based eating is directly linked to African roots and how African-American eating habits have been debased by a chain of oppression stemming from slavery, economics and modern agribusiness.

During our conversation we talked about staying healthy during uncertain times, white veganism, food deserts and why now, more than ever, the time is perfect for people to choose to become vegan.

Imagine a world where those who love chicken nuggets can have their cake and eat it too. Simply put, a world where no chicken will lose its life to satisfy the appetite of millions of people who crave chicken nuggets. If Christie Lagally, CEO of Rebellyous Foods, has her way, you won’t have to imagine. A mechanical engineer who holds five patents, Lagally started the food technology and manufacturing company, Rebellyous Foods, in an effort to end factory farming by creating delicious, widely available, and affordable Plant-Based chicken products.

While there are currently delicious alternatives in the marketplace, most Plant-Based meats are two to five times the cost of meat and were developed for the retail sector, making them inaccessible to many...until now.

A female CEO in a predominantly male-led sector, Lagally is no stranger to being a woman leader in a man’s world. Prior to starting Rebellyous, she supervised a team of 35 engineers--mostly men--at Boeing where she and her team optimized the 777 wing assembly. What she learned at Boeing is informing how she and her team are redesigning processing facilities to optimize them for Plant-Based meat, enabling them to create Plant-Based nuggets that are crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, yet affordable.

Ultimately, they hope to replace some of the $40 billion spent on nuggets, patties, and further processed chicken products sold annually with their products.

Rebellyous has raised over $18 million so far in venture funding, including from Joe Montana’s Liquid 2 Venture Fund, and Vulcan Inc., the company founded by Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul Allen. Its products are now available at more than 350 Safeway and Albertson's stores in the Northwest and Chicagoland area as well as Haggen, Met Market, and Good Eggs in the SF Bay Area.

Paula Mosteller’s journey into business and being vegan was inevitable.

A graduate of the University of Colorado, Paula spent the early part of her career marketing accounting software applications for large corporations. She continued her career in the corporate world in commercial marketing at The Boeing Company in Renton, WA.

On a whim, Paula accepted a position working for a web development company where she discovered her passion for web development and applications.

When Paula decided it was time to go solo, she combined her love of animals and helping people grow their businesses with the help of software.

PetExec is Launched

Paula and her long time workmate and friend, Paul Naro joined forces to create PetExec.

PetExec is the world's leading tool for pet care businesses. From the start, the vision was to be a web development company run and managed by web development professionals, not investors or outside venture capitalists.

A huge part of Paula’s mission is to raise awareness about the horrendous treatment of animals consumed as food. Additionally, how switching to a primarily plant-based, vegan diet is great for one’s health. When we are healthy, we tend to have better performance in our businesses and jobs.

What started as a bite by a kitten, turned into a severe infection, requiring extensive medical care.

This experience was the catalyst for Dr. Laura Catena, DVM, to evaluate ways to improve safety for not only other veterinarians and other industry experts, but also pet owners.

This is when the seed of an idea began that is now a vegan signature product from Dr. Catena.

Dr. Laura Catena is the Founder and President of The ArmOR Hand Glove®. A 100% vegan product, the ArmOr Hand Glove allows for more flexibility and compassionate care for anyone who handles animals.

The Vegan Transition

Dr. Catena was in vet school when the thought of going vegan first began to grow. Her best friend had an epiphany during a large animal rotation that encourage her to stop consuming animal and dairy on the spot.

For Laura, it took a few years more, but for the past few years, she has been 100% vegan.

Since making the complete transition, her health has improved as has her energy, focus and state of mind.

Additionally, she feels completely aligned with her profession and animal welfare by being vegan.

“It makes sense for me and my profession to support a vegan lifestyle.”

Her lifestyle aligns perfectly with her connection to animals.

Those new to getting booked on podcast shows may come upon situations you’re not quite sure how to handle.

Whether it be the host asking you to pay to be on the show, being required to agree to pay a no-show fee, or a bait and switch where the only reason the host invited you on their show was to sell you their products and services.

Paying to be on Shows

As a rule, most hosts do not charge their guests. However, it is not unheard of, but before you agree to pay, determine if it’s a good investment.

In other words, what has to happen to justify the cost?

No Show Fee

Charging a “no-show” fee is a new one to me. The first time I heard this was a few days ago. In all the time I’ve been hosting two shows and being a featured expert on hundreds of shows, I’ve never come across this.

I’m not sure if this is a new practice, but most of the show hosts I know, do not have a no-show penalty fee.

Guests Paying for Host’s Products and Services

Investing in your personal and professional development is to be expected. It’s not unheard of for a guest to invest in the host’s expertise.

There’s nothing wrong with a featured guest investing in the products and services of the host, if the investment is one the featured guest felt called to make and did not feel pressured to make.

If, on the other hand, the host invites guests on simply to do a “bait and switch” sale that’s slimy business practices.

Theresa “Sam” Houghton is out to transform today’s broken food system. As Chief Nerd at The Modern Health Nerd, she is using smart strategies and great content to help Plant-Based brands bridge the gap between their products and their customers.

“Sam” to her friends, clients and just about anyone who knows her, has dedicated her personal and professional life to doing all she can to raise awareness about the benefits of a Plant-Based lifestyle.

Her transition to a Plant-Based and vegan lifestylist had what she refers to as, “Embarrassing beginnings.”

Sam explored being vegetarian in her teens because she heard vegetarians tended to be thinner. This reasoning was the start of digging deep into healthy eating, rather than simply to lose weight.

Her research uncovered what virtually every vegan discovers; the horrors of factory farming, harm to the environment and overt health issues those who consume meat and dairy experience.

Sam dealt with an eating disorder that put her at an unhealthy 90 pounds. And, contrary to many people’s experience of losing weight, with a healthy Plant-Based diet, filled with lots of whole foods, as well as a good weightlifting exercise regime, she was able to put on a very healthy 25 pounds of muscle.

Andrea Learned was destined to be a vegan activist long before she had an inkling of this. She had been fascinated with the idea of being a vegetarian years before identifying as a vegan.

Andrea recalls how she didn’t like the look of meat on the kitchen counter as her mom prepared a meal, but it took years for her to connect the dots on why this was.

The greatest shift came when Andrea moved from Vermont to Washington state and volunteered for a radio station.

When interviewing one of the DJs for a project she was working, Andrea had an epiphany about going vegan. The DJ had been a longtime vegan and his compassion and empathy was what most appealed to her to even consider going vegan.

Her decision to identify as vegan was an overnight choice.

Ph.D., professor, vegan, wife, dog mama, animal advocate and punk rocker only begins to describe Lisa Barca.

As the lead singer of Scarlet Rescue, an all-vegan punk rock band, Lisa can be found raising awareness about the vegan philosophy whether at the front of a room full of college students, caring for rescued pigs at a sanctuary or on the stage at a punk rock concert.

Lisa’s passion for writing songs and singing has spanned decades. She played in bands in Boston and New Haven on the East Coast. But her music was put on the back shelf when she attended graduate school and entered a career of academia.

Currently, Lisa is a professor at Arizona State University, in the Honors College.

Her passion for music was reignited in 2017 after watching a documentary about animal agriculture specific to calves being stripped away from their mothers shortly after being born.

Turning Point

Even though she had been vegetarian for years, the film woke Lisa up to the incredible exploitation of the female reproductive system, the separation of families and depraved violence within the dairy and egg industries.

“I went vegan on the spot, and never looked back. That's when I started playing music again in earnest and started writing songs about becoming vegan,” Lisa reflected.

Soon after, Scarlet Rescue released their album Animals and Other People. Songs include their most popular song, Barbecue Protest which tells the story of how may feel when invited to gatherings where others minimize the fact they are vegan.

A unique aspect of the band is all members are vegan.

Should your business be on Facebook or Instagram?  Should you be doing Google Pay Per Click or sending out press releases?  Should you launch a YouTube channel or start a podcast?

Founder of Vegan Business Tribe David Pannell explains why it shouldn't be YOU making all these decisions - it should be your customers.  The problem is, however, that most vegan businesses know surprisingly little about the people who buy from them.  Even worse, they make huge assumptions about who their customers are and what marketing will connect with them just because they are selling a vegan product or service. It's time for you to come out from behind your computer keyboard and actually engage with your customers and make them your best friends, so that you can learn how to find more people just like them.

David Pannell is the co-founder of Vegan Business Tribe, a community of over one thousand vegan businesses worldwide.  David and his partner Lisa Fox also run vegan consultancy agency, Promote Vegan, which has advised some of the world's biggest food manufacturers and high-street brands on how to better connect with the vegan marketplace.  David is a former Ambassador for the Royally-Chartered Institute of Marketing in the UK as well as a career-long marketer and entrepreneur, and also the official UK agent for The Vegan Society's Vegan Trademark scheme.

How can people justify the pain and suffering animals are subjected to? Pain and suffering that is a direct result of insatiable appetites for unhealthy food choices… food choices that are not only selfish, but absolutely unnecessary.

Whether it be the hotdog on a stick at a county fair, meat on the end of a fork for breakfast, lunch and dinner, or the cheeseburger at a summer barbeque, animals needlessly suffer… and continue to do so with no end in sight.

One woman who knows, to her core, that enough is enough is long time vegan, Jane Velez-Mitchell.

Arguably one of the most visible vegan activists, Jane grew up in a relatively meat-free home. Identifying early on as a vegetarian, she saw animals as other than her next meal.

Yet, it was 40 years ago, when PETA was getting started, that Jane had a life-changing epiphany. She saw a video about animals who were used in testing. This opened her eyes to the horrors most people had no knowledge or understanding of.

It was then that she committed to do whatever possible to raise awareness about the atrocities sentient beings are subjected to.

Although she didn’t consume meat, chicken, and seafood, it wasn’t until she discovered dairy was “liquid meat” that she become 100% vegan. That was 25 years ago.

A Strong Platform to Raise Awareness

With a stellar track record in media, her skill as an anchor, coupled with her passion and advocacy for animal rights, Jane is an unstoppable voice for the voiceless.

Saying you want to create a community is one thing. Achieving this outcome, is a completely different conversation. A successful community is based on several factors including strong leadership, collaborative partnerships, compassion, empathy, drive, commitment, and vision. Attributes that both Lisa Fox and David Pannell have, and some.

Lisa and David have used these very traits to bring together men and women from around the globe who are eager to veganize their businesses.

After both going vegan in September 2018, Lisa and David realized they had skills they could use to help other vegan entrepreneurs grow their businesses. Their journey started with the food and quickly evolved into an understanding and commitment to compassion for animals.

The Backstory

Prior to going vegan, Lisa was an on again, off again vegetarian. David had also been vegetarian for quite a while and his transformation came as a result of the health benefits. Then followed his 100% commitment to the animals and environment.

The greatest pivot occurred for both when a member of their staff brought in vegan brownies, and they realized being vegan could be flavorful. In addition, identifying as vegan was very aligned with their values regarding animals and the environment.

It was because of all the benefits they experienced, by being vegans and the impact it had not only personally, but professionally, they began the Vegan Business Tribe.

What is Vegan Business Tribe?

Vegan Business Tribe is a membership program designed to not only show entrepreneur how to grow their business, but how to succeed.

In addition, through their vegan consultancy agency, Promote Vegan, Lisa and David advise some of the biggest high-street brands and large global food manufacturers on how to better engage with vegan consumers and understand the plant-based marketplace. Vegan Business Tribe is where they give back to the grassroots vegan business community.

In his previous career, David was an ambassador for the Chartered Institute of Marketing as well as running his own marketing and business growth agency for over 12 years.

Lisa also writes the monthly business column in Vegan Food & Living, the UK’s best-selling vegan magazine, as well as being a speaker on autism and running a successful business with a hidden disability.

As a vegan SEO Specialist, Hartej completely understands what your website needs to hit the higher pages of search engines. His success with vegan businesses is just one example of how the right strategies can grow your traffic month after month. His network of over 200 vegan websites, will ensure that your dominance in the market niche will be respected by Google.

Alongside SEO, he offers Google Ads management using an algorithm which is set to learn your industry and the actions of competitors and customers. This will work to drive down your costs and increase the presence you have on the web.

The Vegan Change

Hartej went vegan to be more compassionate to animals. He was not impacted by documentaries because he intuitively knew what was going on with factory farming.

He has aligned his passion for being a vegan with his business. He started in the digital space in 2008 and worked with a wide array of industries. In 2019 he realized that many vegan businesses were not being served by the SEO companies they were working with. This motivated him to make a change in his focus to vegan businesses.

Messaging

One of the most important things to focus on is content marketing. Start by asking yourself a few simple questions.

  • What is your vegan customer looking for?
  • What will they be searching for on Google?

Think about what your customer is looking for and created your content around that.

Shoppers have become more conscious. They are not necessarily looking for a brand name, as much as a philosophy.

You must know what problems you solve and how you can help your customers. Do not worry about the competition, focus on the end user.

Newer people to the vegan space can be intimidated by more seasoned vegans. Keep in mind, there are various types of vegans.

3 Steps for More Visibility

  1. Absolutely have a website. You cannot run a business effectively without having a strong web presence.
  2. Do a competitive analysis and research.
  3. Create content for your website and blog. Content creation is rewarded by Google.

Explore which social networks are best suited for your customer and client base as well as your service offerings. Social media is not a one size fits all situation. However, Hartej is a proponent of Pinterest. He finds a lot of value in the shelf life of a post.

People tend to use Pinterest for “how to” information.

Business Identification

Determine key factors in your business identification.

  • Why did you create your business?
  • What drives you?
  • What motivates you to keep going?
  • What do you want to be known as and who do you specialize in working with?

How To Research Your Competition

Conduct a Google search with the keywords you are using to determine other businesses doing what you are doing? See what companies are ranked the highest. Research the keywords they are using, their content, and social presence.

Combining their love of plant based/vegan eating, skiing, hiking and other outdoor activities, Ed and Tash (as she is known to locals) managed to successfully do what they were cautioned wouldn’t work; open a plant-based bakery.

Their decision to open the doors to Ed’s Bred was not without a lot of thought and planning. Researching some of the finest bakeries in the States, they realized there was a great untapped opportunity to open a plant-based/vegan bakery.

From their original offering of plant-based sour dough bread, Ed’s Bred, pre-pandemic, grew their menu choices into espresso, cinnamon buns, cookies, pizza dough and a few choice deli items.

Enjoying record breaking growth month-after-month, they hit their best month ever when the pandemic hit. Realizing they needed to pivot quickly, it took only 24 hours for Ed and Tash to admit things had dramatically changed.

With no time to wallow in fear or self-pity, they got to work making substantially dramatic changes.

Within 24 hours, they went from hitting their best month ever, to literally being told they had to shut down and lay off their entire staff. Ed and Tash immediately rolled up their sleeves, put pen to paper and figured out what the next steps needed to be.

With no idea how long their doors would be shut, they pivoted by the next day and made the decision to take their business completely online. People submitted their order online, and were able to have a no contact pickup of their order.

Even before the shift in their business model, they achieved what many businesses aspire to, 100% zero waste. With sustainability one of their major values, they are constantly on the lookout for ways to bring no harm to animals and the environment. From choosing vendors who have similar business practices, to implementing environmental programs, Ed and Tash have built a loyal customer base that continues to grow.

As an expert, it's likely that you've thought of the power of podcast shows. The question is, “Do you start your own show or do you appear on other people’s shows?”

Let’s break it down to see which is best for you.

As a Host

Running your own show gives you the ability to showcase any type of information you want. You are the “boss.” However, there are time and financial investments to running your own show that you won’t experience if you appear on established shows.

Considerations

  • Why are you doing a show?
  • Who is the show for?
  • Why should they listen to you?
  • Name your show
  • Determine platform
  • Length
  • Recording equipment
  • Recording and Editing software
  • Editing
  • Converting episode
  • Show notes
  • Hosting platform
  • Submitting to directories
  • Promoting
  • Monetizing

As a Featured Expert

  • Foundation
  • Research
  • Outreach
  • Interview
  • Promote

Facts and Figures

A few facts and figures to consider when deciding to use podcasts as a platform for raising awareness about you, your products and services and your business are that, according to Podcast Insights…

  • 50% of all U.S. homes are podcast fans.
  • 45% of monthly podcast listeners have household income over $75K – vs 35% for the total population
  • 27% of US podcast listeners have a 4-year college degree – vs 19% for US pop
  • 49% of podcast listening is done at home, down from 51% in 2017
  • 22% listen while driving (in a vehicle), same as 2017
  • Comedy is the most popular podcasting genre, followed by education and news

Additionally…

  • Podcast listeners are much more active on every social media channel (94% are active on at least one – vs 81% for the entire population)
  • Podcast listeners are more likely to follow companies and brands on social media
  • Podcast listeners are more likely to subscribe to Netflix or Amazon Prime (meaning they are less likely to be exposed to TV advertising)
  • 69% agreed that podcast ads made them aware of new products or services

Bottom-line

If you’re just starting out, my recommendation is to be a featured expert before starting your own show. But it takes more than simply getting on shows. There are specific steps and strategies to the process.

We’ve moved into a “new normal” over the last week. What exactly does that mean? Actually, no one knows for sure.

Yet, we do know, life has changed… a lot.

With change, comes fear. With fear, comes lack of action. With lack of action… well, lack of action could actually create more fear. The solution… action… the right kind of action.

When all of this started happening, with restaurants and bars being required to shut down in some areas, we didn’t think too much of it due to it being in only a few locations. But a few turned into virtually the entire United States. Other countries are going through the same thing.

Then came dental offices, veterinarians, florists, hair and nail salons and many nonessential businesses. Sure, lots of people think the barber and hair salon are essential, but when you get right down to it, they are not. We are quickly learning what is a “must have” compare to a “nice to have.”

If it feels like the brakes have been put on and life is never going to be the same again, it has changed… dramatically. It’s not going to stay like this forever, but it won’t go back to the way it was. Much of what we took for granted is gone forever.

Lots of people are experiencing massive amounts of panic, fear and anxiety. I can safely say that virtually everyone, myself included, is going through some level of fear. This is a normal reaction. Yet, it’s not whether or not we experience fear, it’s what we do with it.

In this episode, you will find out what you can do.

Margaret Mary O'Connor has a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, New York and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Buffalo.

She is a former Chaplain, and currently a Eucharistic Minister. Margaret May literally walks the walk on picket lines to keep attention on Women's Ordination, Church accountability and on Priest Sexual Abuse Issues. Margaret is a member of Call to Action, Future Church, Roman Catholic Women Priests, Water, Women's Ordination Conference, and SNAP (Survivors Network of those abused by Priests).

She is the recipient of the Special Award for Achievement from the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking Course.

Margaret Mary’s journey into the history of the church began decades ago when she realized a huge truth had been buried away from the general public.

During our conversation, Margaret Mary shares some of the experiences she had when a hospital Chaplin, run-ins with the law and FBI and why she is so driven to reveal the truth about how women are not treated as equals by the “powers that be” in the Church.

Margaret Mary recalls one run in.

“During the last St. Patrick’s Day, a former FBI agent who was hired by the Diocese of Buffalo tried to get the best of me. There were two policemen who were on either side of my shoulders. corner of my eye there was two policemen that were on either side of my shoulders. There were policemen behind me as well as in front of me. It was really jarring.”

Our conversation revealed so much more than I anticipated. You will learn insights about the Catholic Church that have been buried away for hundreds of years.

“Most people have no idea of the history of the church and that women had positions of power.”

Margaret Mary shares the process she went through to write Scandal in the Shadows, including when she wanted to give up because she questioned her right to tell the story in such detail.

Discover what happened when Margaret Mary visited a psychic to dig deep into whether or not she should write the book.

Find out what her concerns are now that the book is published.

Knowing the story must be told keeps her moving forward. The book is the truth revealed and the lies exposed.

Her book is an extension of her life’s work. Margaret Mary is committed to taking her message near and far. She is available for speaking engagements, interviews and guest appearances about the book and subject matter.

About the book

Scandal in the Shadows focuses in on something unbelievably, incredible, which took place in the early History of the Catholic Church, the existence of Mary Priest, otherwise known as Mary Mother of God. Millions of Catholics are unaware of the past presence of Women Apostles, Women Bishops, Women Deacons, and Women Priests, in their Church's History. How could you know, when your own Catholic Church never disclosed the actual truth of this matter to you?

Explicitly absent from this book is any type of fabricated conjecture. Instead, its facts are backed up from Biblical research providing you the reader, with the actual truth, rather than the lies and deception you currently receive from your Church hierarchy.

To some, ancient controversial knowledge might at first seem Scandalous, but it is there where you will find the Historical Truth of the Women Priest Ordination Issue.

Scandal in the Shadows is written from the perspective of a lay Catholic Woman's realization that she was being lied to about her own Church's past History involving Women Priest's. As the complicity of this centuries old Scandal, continues on she wants her fellow Catholics to learn the actual truth of this matter for themselves. This hands-on-book is meant to be a travel guide tool, to enhance the readers own travel back into the early History of the Catholic Church.

You are afforded a journey into a discovery of fascinating proportion, you will be surprised by the thought provoking past History of your own Catholic Church, view your own Church, like you have never before done. Who knew, that the solutions to today's Catholic Church Issues, may very well be solved from utilizing our Church's past History.

Who is the book for?

Scandal in the Shadows is geared specifically for the Laity of the Catholic Church.

It asks the questions that our Church hierarchy's selective memory, will not answer for you. Their memory issue indeed, leaves all of us with more unanswered questions to deal with. What do we really know? And what has our Church conveniently not been telling us? Where can we find the truth today? Why exactly is it, that our hierarchy will not even acknowledge their own Church's past history? If ever there was a time, where Catholics needed Jesus' honesty, and transparency, now is that time. Why have the Church Fathers not been open and transparent with the Laity of their Church for centuries? So where is the truth to be found? It resides with in the skeletons found in the Church's own closets. With their appearance, History's truth will finally come out of the dark to be seen in the light of day.

Her book is a great resource for anyone who wants to further understand the grieving process. Martika believes in the afterlife and being guided by a Higher Power.

Yet, at one point, everything came to a standstill with her writing. Find out how she overcame her own writer’s block through an episode of Oprah Winfrey.

On the afterlife

“I believe that we're all creators and we're always creating constantly, even when we transition. When we go cross over, if we believe nothing happens after we die, then nothing will happen.

I believe that once you cross over, you see that light. Some people are afraid of the light. I don't think they go into the light. And then they become spirits and physical, which we call ghosts and apparitions, which I've seen. But I believe once you see the light, you cross over near it into that light. Because I've experienced that as well. That to me is love in its purest form, whether you want to call it God, the universe or Allah. To me, it's just pure love. And when you experience that, you'll never fear death, ever.”

According to Martika, most people that have experienced the light or had a near-death experience aren't afraid of it.

“Now, if we all had that, we would all probably live in a very different world and we'd look very different.”

Carolyn Kiel is a learning and development leader who helps global companies prepare their employees to succeed during times of change. As the Host of the Beyond 6 Seconds podcast, she interviews entrepreneurs, creators and leaders about their candid and inspiring stories: the challenges they've faced, the ups and downs in their journeys, and how they're achieving their goals.

Beyond 6 Seconds was created based on the fact that most people have incredibly short attentions spans. When Carolyn thought of recruiters, she realized most make their decision what pile a resume goes into within six seconds.

Carolyn’s passion is talking to everyday people who have incredible stories that grab people within six seconds.

In talking with Carolyn a few things became apparent that a guest must know before approaching a host.

What impression do you give in the first six seconds?

Carolyn’s insights

Be authentic. Know your personal brand. Know your strengths. Determine what makes you unique. Be genuine.

What drives you? This is important to know.

Combine this to be noticeable in 6 seconds or less. Realize, you are being judged immediately, from the moment someone sees you and you open your mouth. It’s human nature.

During the interview you will find out who her most memorable guest was and why.

When you pitch, be specific. Listen to a few episodes (or at least part of the episodes). Get your information correct such as the name of the show, host’s name, theme and niche when you pitch. Not doing so puts you in the “not to be considered” pile.

Avoid generic pitches. Let the host know what kind of value you will bring to the audience.

Realize that hosts get lots of pitches on any given day.

Top three things to do to get on shows

  • Research the show and pitch from that perspective and know the theme of the show
  • Point out why you would make a great guest
  • Be prepared for your interview and offer a few talking points

When asked who her “bucket list” guest is, Carolyn was quick to say, “Brandon Stanton the man behind Humans of New York or Hony.”

Want some “win over” points with Carolyn? Introduce her to Brandon.

Brent Basham is one of five experts who started www.Poddit.net based on a need to help both podcast hosts and experts find a simpler, more effective way to meet. Host of Digital Dads (no longer airing) and his new show, Heart First, which focuses on the right values for business, Brent is consider one of the most visionary networkers around. The interview allows viewers to gain perspective on how to make the process of finding shows that are a perfect fit for their expertise simple, easy and effective. What Hosts Want

  • Good content
  • Right fit for the audience
  • Many hosts don’t want to be pitched. They search out guest. However, when done right a pitch can work very nicely.
  • You've really got to bring your A-game to the table when you pitch a host to be on the show.

Hosts might seek out guests by finding them on Amazon, TedX Talks, other shows and by being active on social media. To be good at podcasting, it takes more than just turning on your phone. You have to present yourself professionally. Pod Fading The average number of episodes a host airs is seven before they Pod Fade.

Pod Fading means they fade out of the scene. The challenge resides in the fact they have bought into the belief that it doesn’t take work to get a show off the ground. When they don’t get enough listeners, fast enough, many hosts quit. It can take dozens of shows before a show takes off. And you must consistently work on it.

The Long Game Plan It’s important to see hosting a show, and being a featured expert on shows, with a long-game view.

Here are a few key things you can do:

  • Write a quality book. Quality being the optimal word. A quality book shows discipline.
  • Get out and be seen.
  • Do lots of shows.
  • Don’t worry about the size of the show.
  • Make sure you pitch the right shows.
  • Listen to snippets of the show.
  • Customize your pitch.
  • Make sure the host interviews guests because if they don’t, there’s no reason to ask to be on the show.
  • Have a fine-tuned marketing piece… this is what www.Poddit.com offers experts; a platform to present your expertise. Poddit offers the platform for hosts and experts to meet.
  • Determine if you want to be on a podcast simply to inform and educate or to get an ROI.
  • If you use a P.R. person, make sure they know what they are doing.
  • Be authentic. Most of all, create value for listeners.

For the past five years, host of Bacon Bits Podcast, Brian Basilico has learned a great deal about what it takes to have an award winning show.

Chosen as one of the top 35 Outstanding Podcasts as chosen by Inc. Magazine, Brian pulls back the curtain to reveal what experts need to know when looking for interview opportunities.

Here is just a bit, a Bacon Bit, we covered in our 25 minutes together.

  • Be willing to invest in your education about podcasting.
  • If you’re a podcaster, interview people you really want to learn from. If you are a guest, what do you have that a host could learn about?
  • Treat the interview as you would a conversation over a cup of coffee.
  • You are a featured expert to teach something both to the host and the audience.
  • Being referred to high-traffic shows is a plus.
  • A podcast is not a business in and of itself. It is a piece of the business model.
  • Research the show AND the host before you approach them.
  • Video messages to the host about getting on their show are unique and may get their attention.
  • Follow hosts on social media and engage with them. Show you are really interested in their platform.
  • You may need to have a pre-interview conversation.
  • Use the 3/5 formula. (what’s this? Find out when you watch this interview)
  • Be specific about what you will talk about. Vagueness doesn’t work.
  • Have a unique perspective to what you do.
  • Leave the audience wanting more.
  • Material to prepare… short bio, headshot (high res), address to do snail mail, topic sheet on each topic you are doing.
  • Build real relationships with hosts.
  • Invest in people and they will invest in you.
  • Podcasting can make you an influencer.
  • Do every podcast show you can. You never know who’s listening.
  • Listen to lots of shows.

Digging deep into a discussion about health, business, mindset and more, Kathleen Gage invites her good friend and colleague, Pat Mussieux to share her insights on success, health and mindset. Pat is a professional speaker, business consultant, coach and author.

Having built a highly successful business after leaving a 22-year marriage, Pat doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to what it takes to succeed.

Pat is a woman of faith who believes God is always working in her life. Through the power of prayer and meditation, she leads a life that inspires others around the globe.

Pat says, “Success is a choice we make day by day. It’s time to give up the excuses and find the reasons why you must take action.”

At nearly 69, Pat not only talks the talk, she walks the walk. Living a vibrant life, running a highly successful business, exercising on a daily basis, eating healthy and keeping her eye on bigger mountains to climb, Pat shows, through example, what’s possible as we age.

Common Excuses

Pat will be the first to shatter common excuses people use that hold them back from the life they are capable of. She says some of the most common ones she hears are:

  • I’m too old
  • I’m not old enough
  • I don’t have the money
  • I don’t have enough money
  • My partner won’t support me
  • I don’t know how

The way to get to the other side of the excuses is through action. Daily, consistent action.

One way to be a great coach is to be coached by great coaches. During our conversation, Pat shares the process she requires potential clients to go through before she will work with them.

“So bottom line, Kathleen, I'm not interested in the excuse makers anymore. That's the majority of the population. The majority are not prepared to do the work anyway. The majority have not even thought through the conversation. And they're just not aware of what's coming out of their mouth automatically.”

Pat loves working with entrepreneurs who don’t rely on excuses but rather find reasons to go the distance. Taking a wholistic approach to how she works with her clients, they must be committed to physical well-being in addition to business well-being.

She uses an integrated approach to what she does.

According to Pat there are three things someone needs to be successful.

  • A coach
  • A plan
  • Work the plan

In addition, you need self-care. Self-care is more than a spa day. It’s a mindset. It’s a lifestyle. And you need to celebrate your victories.

One thing Pat does with her time on the platform, during a keynote, is encourage people to ask themselves what they really want. Due to living longer than ever, the choices they make will either give them a life of misery and poor health, or happiness and health.

Her most requested keynote presentation is “You’re Killing Your Business Because You’re Killing Yourself.”

According to Pat, you are responsible for your happiness. You are responsible for your finances. You are responsible for your mindset.

She knows that might feel burdensome and it probably is to many. And yet there is a way. You need to decide you want it. Secondly, how bad do you want it? And then thirdly, go find the resources because we are out there.

Tim Patterson never set out to be known as The Trade Show Guy. He happened upon this as a result of his people skills. Fast forward to today, and he is the “go to” guy for all things tradeshow booths.

The Tradeshow Guy came from a 25+ year radio career and moved into the tradeshow world in 2002.

To learn about the industry when he started, Tim interviewed experts in the field and created what is now one of the most popular podcast shows, TradeshowGuy Monday Morning Coffee, that addresses topics to do with tradeshow success.

He started his own company TradeshowGuy Exhibits in 2011. Tim’s been helping companies such as Bob’s Red Mill, Dave’s Killer Bread, Schmidt’s Naturals and others with design and fabrication of tradeshow exhibits and logistical support.

Tim has written two books in the past five years on tradeshow marketing: Tradeshow Success https://amzn.to/38LiXOA and Tradeshow Superheroes and Exhibiting Zombies https://amzn.to/2S3yjaH

Tim’s also been blogging for over eleven years at TradeshowGuyBlog.com, where you’ll find his weekly vlog/podcast TradeshowGuy Monday Morning Coffee.

Hub for all information is at www.tradeshowguy.net

A few of the highlights from our conversation are listed below. To get the full interview go to…

Foundation for Success

  • Understand that marketing can be expensive when participating in trade shows.
  • Do your homework to figure out costs including staff, travel, booth space, and all the miscellaneous items.
  • Determine how customized your booth will be. The more you customize, the higher the investment.
  • Marketing costs before, during and after a show.
  • Make sure you are going to the right show for the goals you have.

When you first start out, it may be a great idea to attend a show to get a feel for what’s going on. But once you make that decision to attend, commit to it.

When you select the right show, your audience will be there. You need to be prepared.

Follow Up

Statistics indicate that over 80% of leads are never followed up on. Have systems in place for your follow up. Prepare your staff for the follow up.

Is the sales team on board? If they don’t think the leads are good, they likely won’t follow up. This is a huge mistake. You never know when you will hit the target.

Make Your “Booth Time” Engaging

Staff training is essential to create interest in your booth. Avoid being on cell phones, talking among staff and ignoring the attendees and watch body language. Unless it’s a food show, don’t eat at the booth. Even then, staff should not be eating.

Ask engaging questions. More than, “Why are you here?”

Ask questions to get people involved. You are looking to qualify people with your questions. You are also looking to disqualify them. If they are not a good lead, it doesn’t make sense to follow up. However, if they are a great lead, you need to have a plan in place.

Pre-show Marketing

  • Postcards to clients with your booth number.
  • Send something they need to bring by the booth to redeem for a gift.
  • Email clients ahead of time
  • Announce in your newsletter
  • Post on your website
  • Integrate social media marketing

Private Gatherings at the Show Site

It may be beneficial to have a private VIP gathering. This is based on budget and preparation.

If you have a presence there already, a private gathering can be very effective.

Where is the best spot on the trade show floor?

Find out what Tim Patterson recommends for the best location when exhibiting. You may be surprised at his answer.

Swag – Worth it or not?

Find out if giving out swag is a good investment. There are some items that are very popular, and people do keep. Other things, they toss. Determine the best use of your budget.

Collaboration

One way to increase your ROI is through collaborative partnerships. Find out when it’s a good idea and when it’s not.

Goals for the Show

Tim Patterson makes recommendations on how to set realistic and effective goals for your participation in a show.

Hands down, this will be one of the most important interviews you listen to if you plan to participate in tradeshows.

How does someone go from being an introvert to becoming one of the most well-known experts in the nursing podcast space?

Amelia Roberts has done this and more.

As the host of The Business of Nursing, Amelia is committed to giving those in the nursing industry and health professionals a voice.

Her passion to learn as much as possible from those who came before her made her the perfect host for her own podcast show. Instead of trying to figure the business of nursing out on her own, she went to experts and asked them about their experience.

What started as casual conversations turned into episodes for her podcast which launched in 2017.

The Business of Nursing is a very niched show. However, Amelia does interview experts outside of nursing. Whether it be an accountant who can teach ways for nurses to protect their assets, online marketers who have an important lesson to share, or longstanding health professionals who love sharing their experience, her guests are as diverse as they are passionate.

What She Looks for In Guests

•Somebody to serve her audience
•An expert who is very clear that her show is targeted to those in the nursing and healthcare industries
•Someone who knows the industry
•An expert who can bring a different perspective to healthcare
•Those who can give actionable, valuable advice to nurses

Her mission is to elevate the voices of nurses. When people approach her about being on the show and it’s evident they have not done their homework, she is likely not to have them on. The main thing she looks for is someone who has a twist that is applicable to her audience.

Best Advice to Those Want to Start A Podcast

Start by being a guest on other people’s podcasts. This allows you to see best practices and learn from those who are seasoned at podcasting. Another insight is to always lead with “what’s in it for the host and their audience.”

And finally, lead with curiosity. Be curious.

•What are they interested in?
•What do they need?
•What do they have?

If you feel you are a great fit, or if you’d like to interview Amelia Roberts on your show, reach out. She’d love to hear from you. Oh yes, be sure to subscribe, rate and leave a comment on this interview.

We are midway through January 2020. Chances are a great many people have already given up on their goals, or their resolutions as they like to call them.

Most people will give up on whatever they tried to convince themselves were so important at the beginning of the year. Often when people create resolutions, are sitting at a bar or drinking at a party on New Year’s Eve.

They think, “Oh, I've got to come up with something. I've got to make a change.”

They may be in somewhat of a tipsy or drunken stupor when they make their resolution. The reality is, with resolutions, in order for them to be effective, just wanting something is not enough.

In this episode, you’ll learn why you have to go a bit “over the edge” to achieve outcomes.

There are times we make one change that becomes a life changing experience… one day at a time.

For me, it was...

  • Getting sober in 1983
  • Getting in my current relationship in 1987
  • Quitting smoking in 1994
  • Starting a business in 1994
  • Going 100% plant based in 2018

It’s not about making resolutions that creates success. It’s the one choice that you repeat over and over that creates success.

The following are a few excerpts from the current episode of the Power Up for Profits Podcast show. After a long hiatus of doing my podcast show, I’m back in the saddle.

The goal of this podcast show is to share ways that bona-fide experts can gain lots of visibility. The show is geared to experts who want to learn various strategies to gain visibility.

A huge focus is with podcast interviews. Going deeper, it’s about virtual podcast tours.

We will move into how you can set up your own show, but that won’t be for a while. Primarily because most people don’t have the wherewithal to have a show and stick with it.

There are a few reasons most people shouldn’t start a show with time and knowledge at the top. My recommendation to most experts is rather than starting your own show and having to build your audience and content and doing this week after week, it’s better (for most) to be a featured expert on various shows.

Starting a show too soon into your plan for gaining visibility may spread you too thin. Begin by being a featured expert. Take time to find podcasts shows that are a great fit for you based on your message, your market and your topic.

When you get that down, then you might want to consider starting your own show. I know there are others who won’t agree with this and try and convince you to start your own show. They are entitled to their opinion, but I’ve seen far too many experts burn out from overloading themselves.

The Trifecta Approach

Like many authors, I made the mistake of believing writing one book would put me on the map. I also had an erroneous belief that the book would somehow market itself.

Fast forward to today and now I KNOW it our responsibility as authors to market the book as much as possible.

Tips

  • Have a plan to market
  • Realize, writing the book is the easy part
  • Determine the “back end” of the marketing plan
  • Learn the real definition of what it means to be a bestseller (hint… hitting #1 in a category may not mean you are a bestseller)

Once you write the book, comes another level of work. In this interview you will learn my journey of writing books and learning how to market them.

To get the most out of your efforts, do all you can to get a high concentration of shows during a short period of time.

Rather than doing one or two shows in a month, book dozens over a period of a week or two. That may seem like a lot but, keep in mind, many shows are pre-recorded.

You can record dozens of shows over a couple of months and based on the schedule of the hosts, many could air during a time period that your book is launching in. Work it into your conversation with the host about your book launch to determine if it fits within their scheduling to release your episode during the launch.

I can promise you this, it WILL take a lot of effort to pull this off. Yet, imagine being on dozens upon dozens of shows over a period of weeks. The potential is incredible.

You absolutely must learn how to market. One of my favorites is a Virtual Book Tour.

Think in terms of the Trifecta Power of a Virtual Book Tour. https://www.powerupforprofits.com/the-trifecta-power-of-virtual-book-tours/

As a speaker and/or author, virtual book tours are very powerful to educate and entertain.

When looking for shows, avoid throwing mud on the wall and hoping something will stick. Take a focused approach.

Listen to the entire interview for great tips and insights on how you can grow your visibility as an author.

Do you have a big message? Are you looking to gain lots of visibility? Are you wanting to grow your business like never before? Then you're in the right place.

There are specific steps you can take to get greater results for your efforts.

When you're looking for podcast opportunities, make sure that the shows that you're targeting are a good fit for your message. Clearly state what your niche is and what you can offer the host and audience by appearing on the show.

There are a lot of podcast communities cropping up where hosts want to meet possible guests and experts want to meet hosts.

Far too often, when someone is asked why they are in the group, they respond with a very generic, “I want to be on shows.”

Be more specific than this.

What type of shows? Who is the audience that you’re a great fit for? What do you have to offer the listeners as far as expertise?

For example, let's say that you deal in women's health specifically to do with plant based eating. Rather than saying, “I want to be on health and nutrition shows,” say, “I’m seeking opportunities to be on shows that address women’s health and nutrition, specifically to do with plant based eating.”

Keep in mind that it's very competitive nowadays compared to the past. A lot of people didn't even know what a podcast was. Now podcast shows are cropping up all over the place and the hosts are looking for guests to be on the show.

When you are prepared, you have a much better chance to stand apart from the competition.

There are those who say there is no such thing as competition, but there is.

One way that you can stand apart is to present yourself in as professional away as possible. Professional is relative to what your subject matter is.

Make sure your website and blog is up to date. If you have a YouTube channel, upload current videos. Have a pitch sheet.

Do what you can to get a high concentration of shows. One show a month is good, but imagine one per week and even one per day. Now imagine what would happen if you did two or three a day. That’s a lot of visibility.

If you’re doing a book launch, you want to put a lot of effort into getting on as many shows as possible. Not sure how to do that? Check out my Kindle book, Virtual Book Tours for Indie Authors; Strategically Using Podcast Interviews to Create Massive Visibility, Profits and Book Sales
