There are many tropes that have endured for the ages, but none quite so popular as the Dead Mom Phenomenon. Everywhere we look in films, books, TVs shows, etc. moms are dropping like flies. Em is joined once again by two lovely motherless mongrels, Carly and Farleigh to breakdown why moms are such easy targets in fiction, talk about our favorite fictional moms, and of course, get off topic at least a few times.

We can all agree that Nancy Wheeler did not start out as anyone's favorite, right? Our new friend, Farleigh joins us to discuss the Wheeler's eldest child and a whole bunch of other things, like how by season four, she's more than made up for her whiney fifteen year-old introduction and has turned into a shotgun-sawing, monster-slaying, genuine bad. ass. And definitely deserving of a better storyline than a tired-ass love triangle that we all thought was settled by the end of the second season.

Once upon a time, Marvel and the MCU created characters (both good and bad) who were all pretty much, under the surface, redeemable figures. They said "Bad guys are just misunderstood good guys and if we can't make you love a character we can at least make you sympathize with them by showing you how they were tormented by the evil Nazi regime that's at the heart of all the bad stuff in this universe." And we were like, "Yeah, fine. Cool. I'm on board." And then somewhere along the line, the PTB decided that the message they really wanted to put across was that everything bad that happens to you is your fault and your trauma is something that you need to apologize for. And V and Emily were like, "Huh-uh. Not on our watch." Basically, we're not super stoked about Thunderbolts, alright?

V is back to share in the joy, the bliss, the unmitigated rapture that comes from finding a new ship in an unexpected places. Yes, it is true that Chrissy and Eddie only had a brief moment together in canon, but fanfic has done what fanfic does and ensured that their love will blossom and live forever on the internet. Also, a less-than-friendly reminder about parasocial relationships, another million reasons why bullying is never, EVER okay (ESPECIALLY when it's over fictional characters, people,) and some sad news when Emily reminds 99.99999% of the population that, try as they might, they will not be marrying Joseph Quinn.

Diz was a Samantha. Em was a Miranda. That girl who took over Em's lease was a TOTAL Carrie in all the worst ways.

What are we talking about this week?

Why, Sex and the City, of course. We finally convinced Diz to pay us a visit in Shipper City so we can talk about the original series, the two movies (only one of which we really acknowledge) and of course, the newest chapter, And Just Like That.

Plus bonus talk of seriously questionable choices made in college, how Steve is the best and Carrie is the worst and of course, why the writers thought we needed to be punished with the "comedy concerts" of Che Diaz.

Adri returns for her second stay in Shipper City to talk about one of her most favorite books, The Hobbit. Tune in to listen to another one of Emily's 60 Second recaps, a lot of talk about the dreaminess of Richard Armitage, and the necessary discussion of how much Thranduil really just needed a boyfriend. Who doesn't love opposites attracting? Or enemies to lovers, sharing a wall in neighboring businesses? Or the idea of the fluffy sunshiney one bringing flowers to the grumpy rough-edged one? Or EVEN BETTER reversing it so that sunshine is wielding the tattoo gun and the grumpus keeps finding excuses to bring them flowers? Anyway. We're talking about the tattoo parlor/florist trope today so take your Benadryl, select your flash, and dive in.

Grimey is back with a mind to talk about a truly underrated gem, ahead of its time and beloved by anyone with a sense of cinematic taste. That's right, we're talking about the 2001 box-office underwhelmer, A Knight's Tale. Starring Heath Ledger (child of god) and a score of other wonderful actors, all of whom came together to give it their all in this little sweetheart of a film. Spoiler alert for Loki and Black Widow as well!

You asked, we're doing it: A second Fleur de Louve episode WITH a guest (welcome back, Mia!) so we can spend all the time talking about this rare and beautiful love between Sarah Wilson and Bucky Barnes. There might also be a brief detour where we talk about enlisting the celebrities who follow us (yes, BOTH of them) to help us write a Broadway musical about this very thing. And maybe a threat against anyone who tries to harm Sarah in any upcoming Marvel properties. Maybe. Probably.

DC clearly hasn't spent enough time online if they think their little censorship of Batman and Catwoman's sex life is warranted or even remotely in character. But that's all well and good because the entire internet banded together to let them know what exactly makes Batman so heroic where Catwoman is concerned.

It used to be you'd live through one major, horrific, generation-defining experience every 50-60 years or so. Lucky for us, our generation gets freshly defined by something new and horrible every 18-24 months whether we like it or not. But regardless of everything else that's happened, with the CDC's new lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, a lot of feelings are being churned up. It's time for one final look at the trope that cropped up a little over a year ago to help us deal with What Fresh Hell was delivered to us that day and say farewell to the Quarantine Fic.

It's February, a month for lovers. And thanks to the magic of time travel/time zones, your host and her special guest are talking to you on BOTH Galentine's and Valentine's Day. What better time for Grimey and Emily to spend talking about femslash and Femslash February. Just a heads up, they're going to flirt with each other the whole time.

Have you ever seen a ship so absolutely and entirely perfect in gif and fic form that you think it must of course be canon? Only to find out that is NOT? If so, you maybe be entitled to compensation from the law offices of Nelson & Murdock and be eligible for a one-time payout of a few hundred Shipper Bucks. Anyway. Mia is back, leading Emily aboard her OTP, talking about Karen Page and Frank Castle who, as it turns out, is not who Emily thought he was.

Character structure is pretty simple. You've got your hero, your villain, your mentor/parent/guardian, your sidekicks...and then everyone else. We all know and the love all the heroes and swoon for the villains and elevate the sidekicks every chance we get. But what about those side sidekicks? Those spare characters that don't get as much love? That's what we're jamming on this week.

She didn't WANT to have spent way too much time analyze a 30 second TV spot, formulating multiple theories, hashing out her hopes and dreams, and finding coordinating fanfic about it. But she did. What came first: the Ship Wars or the Armada? Did we treat Harry Potter ships with such severity because we shackled ourselves to the idea of legitmate naval war vessels? Or did we declare our ships legitimate warcraft BECAUSE we took our ships so seriously? This and other questions are explored while Emily tries to rouse support from herself for her own NaNo project and tries to remember why she participates in this madness every year.

"Did you know that the B in LGBTQ+ stands for 'Best friends since childhood, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes were inseparable on both playground and battlefield'?" We're digging into the deep stuff this week guys. Nia's back to talk about fanfic's gay gay history, talk contemporary trends, and shares hopes for the future of queer content. And then Emily takes over to railroad the conversation into a discussion about how much Steve and Bucky are and have always been in love. There's a lot ot unpack here, lovers, a lot to unpack.

If you're hoping for an exceptionally well-researched deep dive into the nittiest and grittiest details of the Batman Universe and all things Gotham, you're probably going to have a bad time. If you have no frame of reference for anything Batman and just want to hear someone talk about how much she loves one, specific piece of a very large, Bat-shaped cake? Then you're in the right place. If you're going to tell us that Emily isn't a real Batman fan because she only loves the Nolan films, well, you can leave the way you came. No gatekeepers in Shipper City, but all others are welcome to listen as we talk about Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle, the Joker and Bane, and all the baby batlings in the Batfamily.

God what is better than knowing two characters are going to get together and having to wait 30+ chapters or 7+ years of television to watch it happen. There is just so much to love about Percy Jackson. First, listen as Em is joined by a member of the cast of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical for a talk about what makes the show and the story so relateable. Then she's chatting with one of her besties about what Percy means to her and what fanfic's done for halfbloods and all manner of geeks in the universe.

Listen, no one on this podcast is going to see 'After', okay? It's just not going to happen. Is it part principle? Yes. Is it also part psychotic jealousy? Also yes. Instead, Em's going to offer a few suggestions of fics that are kind of sort of based on movies that would make INFINITELY better movies than the ones currently being shat out of production right now.

Animorphs, Swan Lake, The Emperor's New Groove...all excellent examples of the Animal Transformation trope. All things discussed this week while Em struggles to overcome the mental scars caused by Pinocchio, tries to remember the plot of Lady Hawk, and goes on a truly righteous rant about who belongs in fandom. (Big hint: it's everyone.)

You've seen it on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in just about ever soap opera ever, on Stargate Universe, and of course in the peak Jamie Lee Curtis film: Freaky Friday. That's right, we're talking body swaps this week as well as celebrating our precious AO3's Hugo Award nomination.

Two fics from the SS Shieldshock that illustrate why swapping bodies in fanfic can be so much fun.

All Em wants to do is talk to you about every last detail about Killing Eve and how amazing it is. BUT if you were planning on watching it--WHICH YOU SHOULD--then hearing her gush and drool all over the twists and turns and intensity and undeniable chemistry between Eve Polastri and Villanelle would ruin all the surprise.

So in an episode that wasn't really thought out by your host, Em does her best to convey how amazing Killing Eve is without revealing anything. It was very difficult.

It's super weird when you see a great movie, decide you're going to look for some fic about it, and realize you don't actually ship the protagonist with anyone. Luckily, that's where the BrOTP comes in. Listen up as Em goes over the finer points of the often overlooked BrOTP and shares a fic that will introduce you to a brOTP you didn't even know you needed.

Wonder Woman, you are a perfect superhero film. You are flawless and beauty and soft and powerful and made Emily feel like she could spit fire and fight twenty dudes immediately after viewing. This week, Em talks out just how much Wonder Woman and Diana Prince means to her and bleeds all over the episode about the heartbreak and poetic tragedy of Steve Trevor and WonderTrev. She also says really eloquent things like "more stories about time stuff and immortal...things."

How tall are dwarves supposed to be? Are they comparable to hobbits? And how do humans figure into this equation? A lot of questions get asked, very few get answered or, honestly, even merit a response. Otherwise known as the week that Emily read something from a fandom she did not understand and refused to ask for help. Also, there's some talk about the now infamous Batman peen. Em went searching for some cringey fics this week, only to be disappointed (and vocal!) about some parts of fanfic that just don't need to happen anymore. No links this time, ships. Emily suffered enough for all of you.

Join Emily (and later on Chels and hopefully a guest or two) as they tackle fics that they previously considered "Cringey" and try to wrestle their demons and darkness out of the pure heart of their fanfic consumption. Make sure you check out all of the artists and creators linked below from the girls' trip to Rose City ComicCon and leave them some love!
