Today’s episode is from the How to Study the Bible Podcast. We are kicking off a new Advent series there, looking at the women in Jesus’ lineage in a God of Our Mothers series. In Matthew 1, we get a genealogy of Jesus’ family. Genealogies are put in place because the people matter to the story, and there are several women named in his family line.
WHAT DOES IT SAY?
Matthew 1:1-3:
“This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar…”
Genesis 38 – Who Is Tamar?
She is not an Israelite
She is unwanted
She is mistreated
She is seeking justice
She is shrewd
(Don’t forget how Judah’s mom came to have him--also veiled and in disguise)
Genesis 38:26 is the turning point in the story. Judah confesses his unrighteousness, and we see that Tamar is brought into his family and one of her twin sons becomes part of the lineage that leads to Jesus (Perez).
WHAT IS THE BACKSTORY
After Joseph is sold into slavery, we get this graphic story in Genesis 38. We see the wickedness of Judah as a foil to Joseph’s righteousness. But eventually, we’ll see Judah take a righteous turn. First, though, he marries a Canaanite, and they have three sons. One of these sons marries Tamar.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
God colors outside the lines.
We are never defined by our past.
God sees the marginalized.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME?
Matthew 9:10-12:
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[a] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

And so, I think it is with you; your ideas mature gradually – let them grow, let them shape themselves, without undue haste. Don’t try to force them on, as though you could be today what time (that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will) will make of you tomorrow. Only God could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be. Give Our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.

The chances are slim that my quick answer is the right answer, and it stops the conversation instead of taking it to a deeper place. When we take one step back, we enter into a place of humility by assuming we don’t have all the facts. Taking a step back looks more like walking side-by-side with someone, and less like a transactional “bank teller” interaction.
A lot of times, taking one step back is asking yourself “what is the nature of this relationship I’m in?” and approaching the conversation from that place. I share an example about my teenagers – instead of just giving them the quick answer to solve a problem, I can take one step back and ask myself “How can I have this conversation in a way that lends itself toward the goal of my child becoming a more graceful, wise and caring adult?”
Taking that one step back can help make sure you’re on the right path forward, so my encouragement to you is this: next time you’re in a situation where you’re trying to solve a problem, hear the words “take one step back.”

When I look back over my leadership and life, there’s just something so sticky about a good analogy. I love a great word picture, and this one has stayed with me for years.
It originally came from a 1974 article in the Harvard Business Review which you can read here. It’s about the dynamics in a workplace where managers unintentionally find themselves creating a bottleneck, and taking on all of the problems of their team members.
Picture two people coming together to engage a problem. That problem is like a monkey on your back, who needs to be fed and cared for. During the conversation it can straddle both of you, but it always leaves on someone’s back. You might not be a team manager, but this concept will be helpful for you if :
You’re consistently unsure of who’s doing what in your life, and always asking, “whose problem is this!?” You secretly (or not-so-secretly!) feel resentful. “Why am I the only one pulling my weight and keeping everything together?!” You feel frustrated in communication. Often you think a conversation has gone one way, but then find out the other person thought it went a completely different way. “Well that’s not how I remember the conversation!”
Whether you’re a team manager, the parent of a teenager, or managing your household with your spouse, it’s such a helpful picture! When you’re responsible for other people, it’s so important that when anyone comes to you with a monkey on their back, they leave with a monkey on their back.
Take a listen, and I promise you’ll start to see monkeys popping up in conversations… and you might even end up with fewer on your own back.

You guys, the way you’ve been reaching out lately has been my fuel! It’s been quite the year, and we all need places where we can talk about the real stuff. Today we finish what we started last week; an exercise called Life Mapping. (If you missed it, you’ll definitely want to go back and listen to Part 1 first!) This week, I’ll walk you through an exercise that’s been life-changing for me and for the folks that I’ve led through it in the past. It’ll help you to backtrack to understand where you’ve been and illuminate where you’re going.
As you do the work of this Life Mapping exercise, you’ll begin to see the places where you started believing lies about yourself that you’ve operated out of for years. But it will also show you the moments of bliss and calling along the way, left there as signposts of who God has made you to be. So grab your chronological sticky-note covered posterboards, and let’s go! (and if you have no idea what I’m talking about…seriously…listen to Part 1 first!) Four questions to ask yourself after you complete the exercise I walk you through:
What do you need to face? Who do you need to forgive? What do you need to release? What do you need to claim as true?
The journey really begins when we come to a place of recognition that we have stories full of both purpose and pain, and there is hope for a different way. What are we going to do with this one life we’ve been given?
I just finished a crazy (and insanely frigid) adventure race with my husband and some buddies that involved chilling us to the bone and navigating to checkpoints with headlamps and a map. So many times in the confusing darkness (and did I mention cold?) we had to pause to step back and assess where we were, and where we were going. It got me thinking about how important it is to do that in real life, too: to take a step back and assess the shaping of our character and the nature of our calling on this journey through life.
Today’s episode is Part 1 of a 2-part series on “mapping your life” – an activity that provides an opportunity to look at the ways our lives have been shaped, the turning points within our stories, and the places of growth that we might otherwise miss.
It’s tough to navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint without a map, and this activity can help you step out of your story and grasp the redemptive things God is doing in your life. Join me as I walk you through Part 1 of how to create your “life map.” Get ready (and get your post-it notes ready!) for an illuminating exercise. As you make space for your soul to tell you things you might not be aware of, you’ll begin to understand yourself in a way that frees you up to love others more deeply and move forward with purpose.
On today’s episode, I share an analogy that’s been really helpful for me in how I view my life and priorities when I’m feeling anxious or overwhelmed: The 4-Burner Life.
If you’ve ever cooked a big meal with lots of elements to juggle, you know what I mean (ok I know some of us are workin’ with a microwave and a hotplate, but track me with here…) On your stove you’ve got a couple things on the front burners that you’re actively cooking, and maybe some others on the back burners that don’t require active tending. You probably also have some elements still sitting on the countertop or in the fridge for later.
Your life is the same. You’re a limited person with an amazing power to bring your vision into being, but it takes discipline to consistently prioritize the right pots. Which things are both important and urgent? Important but not urgent? Urgent but not important?
Whenever we have big dreams that require consistency and discipline, we’re going to hit obstacles along the way. It takes pacing and an understanding of your capacity. I share some helpful questions to ask yourself as you move around the pots of your life:
How does this decision matter a year from now? Am I dealing with the important as well as the urgent? What does it feel like when I’m working within my capacity? What does it feel like when I’m working outside my capacity?
You are ridiculously responsible for your life and your leadership. The person that you want to become is deeply connected to the way you make decisions in your 4-burner life today. My hope is that this new way of thinking about your life gives you the resilience and discipline to pursue all that is out there for you!
In today’s show, I encourage you to pay attention to what’s good when it’s good. I know. It’s the dead of winter and with all that’s going on in the world right now, it’s really easy to focus on what’s discouraging and painful.
Instead, let’s try to pay attention to what’s actually good; and I don’t mean circumstances. If you ever find yourself with a buoyant spirit and a more-hopeful-than-normal mindset, take note of the things in these three categories that very like contributed:
Rhythms: What’s happening with your rhythms when things are good? What’s your eating, exercise and sleep been like? (Let’s be honest, I need 9 hours of sleep and a whole lotta protein). How about you? Mindset: What’s going on in your attitude when you feel good? Choose to focus on what’s affirming and encouraging in your life. Relationships: Who’s in your life when you’re having good days? How are you able to believe the encouragement they’re speaking into your life?
Let’s pay attention when it’s good. You can’t control it all, but the more you’re in touch with what’s good when it’s good, the more you can begin to shape your life in that direction. Here’s to more good days than bad in 2021!

OK, let's review why we would do the hard work of creating and enforcing boundaries:
Because boundaries gives us the freedom to be responsible for our lives.
It's a tragic mistruth that somehow having boundaries makes you a selfish person. That as a Christian, you are supposed just use your treasure (time, money, resources, emotional energy) on whoever and whatever demands it.
Jesus didn't teach that. Check out Luke 14: 28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
Jesus teaches us to count the cost and use our treasures wisely.
On the show, we talk about four ways to practice boundaries:
Pay attention to anger, resentment, frustration Find a role model Practice little no’s first. Work on your internal conversation Accept other people's No’s.
Remember, why do the hard work? Because.
Boundaries allow you to move toward the life you want with freedom and peace.

Oh friends, I cannot believe that we launched a podcast in a pandemic--and fifteen episodes later, the world is in an even messier place then when we began. But in the midst of the chaos, I am so grateful that we have a place to have conversations about how we can become stronger, more resilient human beings together, and on this episode, we are tackling an issue that everyone I know is dealing with on one level or another--anxiety and fear.
Today, I answer the following questions that have been on my client's minds:
Why am I so anxious? Is this just the way I am in my personality? What can I do about my anxiety in the long-term? What can I do about it in the short-term (ie how to I handle it when it strikes as a panic attack or in the middle of the night?)

I first discovered Jean Paul Samputu through The Forgiveness Project, an international collective seeking to highlight stories of forgiveness from around the world. Jean Paul Samputu was born in Rwanda whose family became victims of the Rwandan genocide, when nearly one million Rwandan Tutsis were killed by their own countrymen, the Hutus. Jean Paul was a well-known rising star in the music scene in East Africa, and when the situation became increasingly tense, his family urged him to escape. He left his village but returned as soon as the killing stopped. When he came back to his village, he discovered that his mother, father and three brothers and a sister had all been murdered—and that his parents’ killer was Jean Paul’s childhood best friend, Vincent, a fellow villager and Hutu.
