In this podcast, Tim chats with Patrick about how he has overcome not only some of the more obvious physical challenges presented by his cerebral palsy, but also about a change in Patrick's psychological approach to life over the last few years.

Patrick admits that in particular his type of meditation, ascension, has helped him enjoy his own life more and feel fulfilled as he enriches the lives of others.

If you would like to find out more about Patrick, he has written a couple of books about his life and his experiences. You can find information about these by visiting his website.

In this show I am inhealthycompany with Nitin Shahane and Ashok Kumar from unwind India https://www.unwindindia.com/

I had just completed a 250km cycle ride through Kerala on a very basic bike and took the opportunity to chat to Ashok and Nitin about the importance of enjoying the journey in life.

With apologies to Wordsworth...

“Dull would he be of soul who could pass by, sights, sounds and smells so touching in their majesty”.

The ultimate destination of the cycle trip was The Hope Community Village in Kerala, a local charity helping children in need to build their lives again http://hopekerala.org/ where I was part of a group from Virgin Atlantic who donated their bikes to the community.

I was certainly in tears as I saw the great work and passion of the charity and the happiness in the children’s faces.

It was lovely to get my daughter Laura on to my show.  She’s is a busy teacher in a Primary school and together we discussed how she deals with the pressures of her workload, and the stresses and strains of the first few years of her professional life.

Happily, I also heard how input from her management team, colleagues, and her own strategies has helped her to deal with the pressures of the “work-life balance” (most of the time). We also discuss how the rewards of teaching are now far greater than any of the down-sides.

I think there are lots of interesting things about good mental health in this show, whether you are a teacher or not. However
If you are affected by any of the issues in this show I recommend that you contact the Education Support Partnership.  They are the only UK charity providing mental health and wellbeing support to teachers and everyone working in education.

They have a free, confidential helpline staffed by BACP qualified counsellors and get help when you need it:
call 08000 562561 or email:

In this podcast it was Tim's pleasure to be In Healthy Company with Captain Chris Hall, with whom he's shared flights , 3rd class Indian rail journeys, long hot dusty  coach journeys as well as many hours cycling, walking, camping, sailing,  and of course eating and drinking.

In the episode he talks about his parent's fight against apartheid and his upbringing as a refugee.  Tim wanted to show how Chris' values and mental wellbeing have been shaped not only by nature and nurture but also by taking personal responsibility for one's own health and wellbeing.

Part of this is his passion for having fun while doing good while helping others achieve their own goals and overcome challenges.

In the interview we can see how Chris has not only enriched his own life through charity work, but also contributed to his own well being through his work in various communities.

In this show you will hear Lewis’ unique story of how he was born with a rare condition, and how he overcame that adversity, physically and mentally to reach his dream of becoming a professional cricketer and performing at the highest level.

It was an absolute pleasure to chat to Lewis, as I have known him and his family since the day he was born!

You will also hear how Lewis had to face an early end to his beloved career in cricket through injury, and how he has used his unstoppable inner strengths to move forward positively into his new career beyond cricket.

After listening to our conversation I’m sure you will be keen to find out more about Lewis’ amazing personal journey at  www.lewishatchett.com  and his excellent physical and mental health platform at www.thesportyogi.com.

As always on the In Healthy Company show the areas we explore are there to give different perspectives and approaches on how an individual might deal with pressures and strive towards wellness.

However I would urge anyone who is struggling to reach out to friends and professional advisers such as your General Practitioner  or The Samaritans.

If you do find this podcast interesting and useful please consider sharing it and subscribing to my shows.

Thanks - Dr Tim

In this podcast Dr Tim will be talking about the “lovely Max” as any time I talk about him to any of our mutual friends it is always “oh yes, lovely Max” who brightens any room he is in, with his bright character and his wise words.

Over the last few years I have got to know Max Longhin - a flight service manager for a well known airline - more and more and started to understand a bit abut how his Buddhist religion and approach to life enables him to bring that brightness and inspire others to think differently.

I hope you find our conversation interesting and useful .
