Today on the show I have a truly inspirational guest.

Jane Thurnell-Read is an author and public speaker who’s passionate about health and well-being. Her two latest books “Menopause Weight Loss: Live Well, Sleep Well, Stop Hot Flashes & Lose Weight” and “190 Weight Loss Hacks: What the Evidence Says” are both best sellers in their categories on Amazon.

And if you come across Jane on social media, you’ll see her lifting weights in the gym that put most of us to shame. Not bad for a lady in her seventies!

I’ve invited Jane on the show to talk about her latest book about the menopause. The menopause is a topic that is now being talked about more, in general and within schools. And I want this episode to be a part of that conversation - helping women discover approaches that could really make a difference to their lives.

Jane talks to me about discussions around menopause, the approaches she recommends in her book around managing menopausal symptoms, and the advice she’d offer men who want to support the women in their life.

Welcome to the TeachStrong Podcast.

In this episode I talk to Dr Yami Cazorla-Lancaster. Dr Yami is “a board-certified paediatrician, certified lifestyle medicine physician, health and wellness coach and a mother of two active and healthy boys”.

Dr Yami works in many different capacities - as a paediatrician, an author, a speaker, and a coach. And today I want to talk to her about her biggest passion - helping families with children eat the healthiest foods possible.

There is increasing interest in whole food plant-based diets. Many people are hearing about the positive benefits this way of eating can have on their health and the health of the planet. However, those with children, and pregnant or breastfeeding women, might be concerned that if they change their diet, they won’t be getting the nutrients they need, or their children won’t be getting the nutrients they need.

So, this conversation is all about discussing these concerns. What does the research say about plant-based diets and children? Will children or mothers be putting themselves at risk if they eat less or no animal products and more plants? Are there any key nutrients we should focus on? What is it like raising plant-based children and are there any “go-to” foods or recipes?

Welcome to the TeachStrong Podcast

Today, I’m talking to Dr Nicola Cann. Nicola, aka “The Family Sleep Consultant”, is passionate about “helping families and professionals better understand sleep for children of all ages”. Through Nicola’s training and coaching she is helping people address this absolutely vital area of wellbeing.

I've been eager to get a sleep expert on the show for a long time now. So I’m very grateful to Nicola, who has a wealth of experience in this field, for offering us her time. I know from my own experience working in a school and talking to friends and family that sleep is an area many people are struggling with. You only have to scroll down Twitter to find someone who is talking about their lack of sleep and asking for advice.

That’s what this episode, and this podcast, is all about. Helping you educators discover the tools to address the areas of your health and wellbeing that are a priority for you. During our conversation, Nicola tells us more about the importance of sleep for adults and children, how individual approaches are key in improving sleep, the role schools have in sleep education, and the tips she offers for young people and for those who work in a school.

Today, I’m excited to be joined by Dr Leila Dehghan.

Leila is a medical doctor turned sports nutritionist and personal trainer. She’s passionate about helping people live active lifestyles and fuelling with the right foods to live a happy, healthy life.

Today’s episode is all about protein - an area of nutrition that gets a lot of focus and seems to be a macronutrient around which there is a lot of confusion.

I ask Leila to help us understand - what is protein? What role does it play in our health and in an active lifestyle? How much protein do we need? Where can we get protein from? What are her thoughts on low-carb/high-protein diets? And much, much more.

This is a really interesting episode that I hope gives you lots of practical takeaways and helps ease any concerns you may have about protein.

This episode is the audio taken from an Instagram Live I hosted with Dr Nitu Bajekal (@drnitubajekal).

On 28th April 2022, I was very happy to have hosted this live talk with Nitu on the day that her new book, "Living PCOS Free", was published.

Join us for a conversation about the symptoms of PCOS, steps to diagnosis, and the approaches that people can take to help manage this condition.

Nitu's mission, along with her daughter Rohini Bajekal, is to help women "regain their hormonal health". And I think this conversation, their new book, and the information they share on social media/their websites prove how hard they are working to make this happen and the big strides they are making to empower people to improve their health and wellbeing.

Welcome to the TeachStrong Podcast.

Joining me for a slightly different episode today is Toria Bono. Toria is a primary school teacher, a coach, and the founder of the TinyVoiceTalks community and podcast.

Through the community she’s created on Twitter and her podcast, she is “raising the voices of all of those in education”, giving more educators the chance to share their thoughts on the biggest topics in schools today.

Today’s conversation is a two-parter. For one part, I want to find out more about why Toria founded TinyVoiceTalks and the impact she sees it having everyday. We know that community is a vital aspect of health and happiness and so for people to have this support network has been so positive for them.

For the other part of the show, we’re going to talk about some of the differences Toria has noticed since introducing some changes to her lifestyle. She’s recently made some adjustments to her approach to sleep and nutrition and has since been feeling the benefits so I want to find out more in the hope that it might inspire others to make some positive changes too!

Hello and welcome to the TeachStrong Talks podcast!

Normally on the show, we invite experts from different fields of wellbeing to share their advice, experience and tips to help you thrive in and out of school. This is a bit of a different episode! For episode #29, I’ve invited George Pointon on the show to have a chat about humour, wisdom and what happens when we ask children those big questions.

If you don’t know George, he works with children and recently started to make some time during the week to ask them some of life’s big questions. He then shares their hilarious responses and adds some of his own analysis too!

The threads are really funny and certainly provide a bit of comic relief from the seriousness of Twitter, teaching and life in general!

I had a lot of fun talking to George. We chatted about how the threads came about and his comedic influences, and then I invited him to share some of his favourite responses from the kids.

I hope this episode provides you with some much needed humour today. And please if you enjoy it then do share with friends, family and colleagues!

Welcome to TeachStrong Talks podcast, a place for real conversations about effective well-being for school staff!

Our guest today is Dr Nitu Bajekal. Nitu is a consultant Gynaecologist who specialises in Women’s Health. She has over 35 years of clinical experience and provides medical and holistic care for women with a variety of health concerns.

In 2014, Nitu set up “Women for Women’s Health” - a voluntary service to empower women of all ages to make lifestyle choices that will help improve their own health and that of their families and friends through education.

Nitu has also written a book with her daughter Rohini (a previous guest on the show!) called "Living PCOS Free", as well as multiple articles for publications like Cosmopolitan, The Independent and Huffington Post.

Around ¾ of teachers are female, however advice and guidance around health and well-being amongst school staff often fails to address specific issues that women may be going through.

The aim of today’s podcast is to unpick the information around some of the most common topics affecting women today and then explore lifestyle approaches that Nitu has seen first hand work to help relieve or treat them.

We chat to Nitu about the causes and symptoms of :

Painful periods Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) Menopause

And the advice that she offers to manage these conditions.

This is a longer episode than normal but a real masterclass in women's health. If one of the topics is of particular interest to you, then jump straight to it by clicking below:

Hello and welcome to the TeachStrong Talks podcast! A place for real conversations about effective well-being for school staff.

Today, we’re joined by secondary school PE teacher Chris Misselbrook. We connected with Chris during one of our well-being webinars. When we invited those on the webinar to share any experiences they had had of meditation, he went on camera to talk about the effects this practice has had on him.

I reached out to Chris afterwards and found that he would talk openly about his experience with burnout, how that led to him being signed off work, and what changes he has made to help him bounce back.

Across the country, many of those who work in schools are struggling with their mental health. The latest Teacher Wellbeing Index from Education Support found, not surprisingly, that stress has increased over the course of this year, with 62% of education professionals describing themselves as stressed. The report also found an increase in symptoms of poor wellbeing such as difficulty concentrating, insomnia and tearfulness. And finally, just over half of those surveyed have considered leaving the profession because of pressures on their mental and physical health, with many of those citing workload as the main reason for this.

So, it’s in this context that I think having conversations like the one I had with Chris are really important. Not only to reassure staff that they are not alone if they are struggling, but to offer some ideas of what has helped someone return to the classroom following time away.

During our conversation we chatted about what led up to this point where Chris took time off, and then dive into what helped him through this difficult period. I’m so grateful to Chris for taking the time to share his story in such an open and honest way, as well as offering practical pieces of advice that can help.

I hope you find this to be an empowering conversation about what we can do when we find ourselves in a situation where we are struggling.

Please remember: if you are struggling, reach out to people. Education Support provides mental health & wellbeing support services to all staff working in education. Free & confidential helpline: 08000 562 561
