With her background in accounting, finance, and exhibiting art, she knows what it takes to get your artwork seen and sold. Naomi Vona is an Italian artist based in London. You may know her by her Instagram name, which is @mariko_koda. Her artwork combines her many interests, including photography, collage, and illustration. She uses found vintage and contemporary photos, which she alters, creating a new interpretation of the original shots. Using paint pens, paper, washi tape and stickers, she gives each image a new life. Naomi also offers art classes online and prints of her art. Tamara Laporte is a celebrated mixed media artist and art teacher with Willowing Arts who has been running her own creative business since 2008. Her work can be described as mixed media folk art with a focus on magical realism. Her art classes are a combination of art techniques as well as self-development. Tam is the inventor and creator of Life Book a year-long art course that includes some of the most celebrated mixed media and personal development teachers out there. Since its inception it’s been joined by over 21,000 people who’ve gained tremendous artistic and personal skills through it. Life Book 2022 features a year of courses from 31 different instructors. Florida artist Rachelle Eason makes two kinds of art. She makes hand-built and wheel-thrown pottery. Her stoneware is both functional and decorative. Rachelle also makes handmade plant-stained paper. She developed the techniques for this unusual art form herself. The paper is then used for handmade books, stationery, and paper packets. With over 25 years of teaching experience, Rachelle also offers online classes that introduce fundaments in art, writing, and pottery making. Lacey Crime is a mural artist who lives in Maine. She previously lived in North Carolina, and that’s where she got her start painting murals. Lacey brings your visions to life through custom murals, either at your home or inside or outside your business. She specializes in interactive murals, where the viewer can be a part of the scene, capturing themselves in a souvenir photo. Lacey is also a master at lettering in her murals or copying your business logo. In a short time, she has already painted over 100 murals. Artist Nathalie Kalbach is from Germany but has lived in the U.S. for 13 years. She’s a painter with a favorite subject of old buildings. Nathalie researches the building, its history, and who may have lived or worked there. This research affects her color and design choices. She also uses an art journal, to test out ideas, try new techniques, and play. Nathalie also teaches online workshops, and has put together the group of online videos called Creative Jumpstart. For this year’s Jumpstart, she has 38 artists who have shared a technique or project that you can do to jumpstart your year. Nathalie is also the author of the book Artful Adventures in Mixed Media. Kristin Miller is an artist from South Florida. She’s also an art professor at Palm Beach State College. Kristin teaches art appreciation, as well as design, illustration, and sculpture. Her own artwork often starts with painting, but then she adds 3D elements. She creates her own papers from natural objects, and sculpts using everyday items like cardboard, wire, and fabric. Her fine artwork creates habitats, investigates spaces of the home and uses natural materials that are layered and hang from or above the piece. Rachel Awes is a practicing psychologist, artist, and author. Her books include words of encouragement, reflections, and quotes, combined with her illustrations. She draws in a doodle-like manner, using pen and paint. Rachel sells her illustrations through Etsy, and you can also see them on her Instagram and website. Lisa Agaran is an artist who creates in the wabi sabi style. She uses mixed media, including found objects. She also teaches and helps artists with their own creativity from her site called True Creativity Within. Her workshops are online, and you can take them live or recorded. Subjects include making oracle cards, learning how to create your own asemic writing, or using various mixed media materials and techniques. Helen Hiebert is a paper artist in Colorado. Her mission is to share her love of hand papermaking and paper crafts with newcomers and to expand the knowledge of experienced artists through artwork, online and in-person classes, retreats, videos, how-to books, a blog, and a podcast. Helen uses handmade paper as her primary medium to create sculptures, installations, and artist books. She offers short “try-it” workshops, monthly project-based classes, as well as a year-long membership program called The Paper Year, full of inspiration, skill-building, and a community of other paper artists. Artist Dawn DeVries Sokol used her journalism degree to edit newspapers and design magazines. That lead to designing books and later writing and illustrating her own books. Her latest books are The Postcard Project and The Planner Book. Dawn also paints custom pet portraits and teaches online art classes. Jessica Hughes is an award-winning artist, author, art business coach and single mom of 7. As CEO of Jess Hughes Media & Fine Art, she leads multiple arms of the brand to promote her own paintings and to offer online courses and programs to artists looking to grow authentic, heart-centered and thriving businesses. Jess also co-authored the International Best-seller called She Did It and So Can You, which chronicles her steps and strategies to rapid success. Artist Kiana Jones makes art under her middle name as Rokita Art. Kiana uses watercolor, pens, and embroidery to make beautiful abstracts. Some are large and some are very small and she mounts them into glass lockets to make jewelry. Kiana has also started an online handmade marketplace called Happening Hands. She invites other artists to list their art items, and she provides the platform, marketing, and expertise for getting your art sold. Erik Abel is an artist, surfer, and world traveler. He lives in Southern Oregon, an area I know quite well because my mom and her family are from there. Before settling in Ashland, Oregon with his family, Erik surfed and traveled all over the South Pacific. Always sketching, he worked to develop his own unique style, which includes images of ocean waves, nature, animals, and abstract figures. Erik paints with acrylic on boards, and enhances his art with pencils and paint pens. He shows his art in galleries, but he has also completed many commission pieces, sometimes for surfing events. He recently added a large detached studio behind his house, and he’s working to get it filled and see how it helps his art business. Aiden Paez is a self-taught painter who works in acrylic, and most recently, in oils. His muted color palette is inspired by his mom Karen Emile’s home décor and the colors that she loves. Aiden is only 15 years old, but he’s a very talented artist. I interviewed them both together so it wouldn’t be so daunting for Aiden, but I also wanted to hear his Mom talk about her creative style. Artist and coach Andrea Scher has a degree in business, but she instantly knew she was destined for a creative field. She started painting, and soon she was selling her artwork. Andrea now works with women to help them be more brave and feel more alive. She helps them to practice and honor their creative superpowers. This is done through e-courses, private circles where she mentors artists, and now through her new book, Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake Up Your Creativity. Courtney Cerruti is an artist, author, and collaborator working out of Oakland, California. She’s authored 5 books with Quarto Press and Abrams, including her latest book called One Color a Day. Artist Dawn Trimble lives in Atlanta. Dawn is a painter with an interior design and architecture background. Just a few years ago, she started painting so she could take a break from so much time in front of the computer. Her paintings might be called minimalist, and yet she combines paint, oil crayons, scraps of paper, and words to make a beautiful composition. Each painting is a part of a named series, which she changes every few months. Her art reflects the joy that she feels, as well as the hope that she sees for the future. Artist Cbabi Bayoc lives in St. Louis where he’s making a name for himself painting murals in schools and doing portraits. He started his art career doing caricatures, which he taught himself by studying other artists. His own style has evolved as he uses vibrant colors to bring movement to the piece. He often paints families and music, and he even created the cover art for an album by Prince. As Cbabi says, he is painting a world where his and your children can thrive. Kristin Dieng is a fine mosaic artist who works with glass. Her glass on glass creations highlight light and color, illuminating different parts depending on where and what time of day they are viewed. Kristin’s creative motivation comes from her desire to respond positively to a chronic illness. For her, creating art provides an opportunity for finding purpose and enjoyment in life, and this enjoyment shines through her use of bright, colorful designs. Kristin specializes in nature-based designs, as well as complex geometric patterns that often incorporate geode slices, bike gears, healing stones and other forms of mixed media materials. Artist Valisa Higman lives in Seldovia, Alaska, where she has a separate art studio. She makes cut paper illustrations, carving away at the background using an exacto knife. The images are revealed in an intricate lacework of lines. Using the black as the foreground, she fills the negative space by piecing together layers of paper in vibrant colors and textures. As a finishing touch, she adds the last details and shading with watercolor or gouache. Her artwork reflects her love of community, nature and Alaskan life, featuring animals like bears or sea otters, in the forests and bays. Artist Yulia Brodskaya creates elegant handmade and very detailed paper illustrations. She cuts strips of paper, and folds, cuts, and spirals the strips, adhering them by gluing the edge. Originally from Moscow, she now lives with her family outside of London. She mentioned that her family only speaks Russian in their home, but I think she did very well going out of her comfort zone and talking English with me. Yulia has done over 200 paper art commissions, including a logo for Wimbledon and the packaging for Issey Miyake cologne. Lately she’s been making paper portraits, using many colors and paper shapes to get the skin tone just right. She’s also published a book called Painting with Paper: Paper on the Edge. Artist Tami Macala teaches mosaic classes and now offers classes from other instructors on her platform Mosaic Arts Online. In fact, she now offers two platforms for classes. The other is called Create Arts Online. She and her husband produce the classes so they have the highest production value and the best customer service experience. With over 100 classes between the two sites, they cover many topics, all offered by artists who are experts in their subject. Artist Miriam Schulman lives in the New York area. After 9/11, she re-evaluated her life and decided she wanted to leave the world of finance. Not knowing what she wanted to do, she happened to make a watercolor portrait of her son in his Batman costume. As friends saw that painting hanging in her home, they started asking her to make portraits for their own family. Eventually, she realized she had a business as a painter. Miriam has expanded her business to include online art classes, an Artist Incubator Coaching Program, and a podcast called The Inspiration Place. Artist Sema Martin has a degree in aerospace engineering, and worked in the space program. Art was always calling her, and after just a couple of years, she left to become a full-time artist. She creates realistic pet portraits using colored pencils, and her business is based on commissions. Over the years, she’s learned how to price and market her art. She has since written a book called Art is My Career, and a marketing book called The Storytelling Workbook for Artists. From her home in Antibes, France, she also provides one on one mentoring for artists, and she offers many free resources on her website. Artist Cyndi Lanier does nature printing, using natural materials like sea fans, sea oats, or feathers. She also makes prints using fish, which is called gyotaku. Cyndi uses inks to cover the fish and then lays paper over them to transfer the image. She also dyes papers to create a background, and will create a composition that may contain one or many images of the fish so it looks like a school. Cyndi is a member of the Nature Printing Society, and she also teaches classes near her home and elsewhere. Her prints have also been put on public art and she does commissions as well. Robin Olsen is an artist in Portland, Oregon. She creates abstract art that may contain paper and many layers of paint, as well as removed layers through sanding or painting over. Her paintings sometimes take on a grid pattern with geometric shapes like circles or diamonds. She also incorporates marks and lines, finding an equilibrium between freedom and order. Robin offers her art through galleries or shows, and previews them on Instagram. Laurie Mika is a polymer clay artist who shapes, paints and stamps clay, and assembles the pieces into mosaic creations. Her polymer clay tiles can be square like traditional mosaics, or they can take on an organic form. Laurie’s mixed media art has evolved over the years, but she’s stayed true to her love of medieval and renaissance styles. Many of her pieces contain words and faces, through stamps or image transfers. Her creations have been published in many publications, and she has taught her techniques in workshops and online classes. She has also written a book called Mixed Media Mosaics. Brooklyn artist Kate Quarfordt is a painter and mixed media artist whose luminous abstract works evoke inner landscapes and portals into other worlds. Her current work celebrates women and their strength through portraits she’s creating in the pages of a book. She held a solo show of her small landscapes called Tiny Portals in a New York space during lockdown, welcoming in one guest at a time to experience her art. Kate also expands her art by photographing and enlarging it, and further embellishing the new piece. Artist Jana Oliveira calls her website 2worlds art because she has lived in both Brazil and the United States. She paints with oils, watercolors, acrylics, and even alcohol inks. Her goal is to help women feel joy through art, and she achieves this through her YouTube videos and her podcast called Artistically You. Artist Jennifer Orkin Lewis is an illustrator and teacher who creates under the name August Wren. Her work reflects her deep love of color, pattern, and nature. She works in watercolors, as well as gouache paints. Jennifer’s art has been featured on products for many companies, like Anthropologie and Kate Spade Home. Her art can be purchased on prints, scarves, and even jigsaw puzzles. She’s also an author and book illustrator and her latest book is called The Sketchbook Idea Generator. Artist Dionne Woods created the business called The Turquoise Iris. She got her start painting furniture and then canvases, and she taught herself so much along the way. She’s now a pro at the details of an art business, like shipping your art, filming while making art, and finding experts when trying something new. Dionne now shares what she’s learned and coaches others through her membership groups. She has also created a digital magazine called The Turquoise Iris Journal and a podcast called Paint Talks. Roberta Wagner has a home with a studio in Gig Harbor, Washington. Her day job has always been in the banking industry, but she takes a break from that by making art. She’s made ceramics for many years, paintings, and now textile and paper collage art. Art has always been a part of her life, and a few years back she decided to write her first book called Come Walk with Me: Exploring Why Art Matters. With the help of a few book and photography experts, she’s created a beautiful book that just came out this year. Artist Amanda Evanston is a painter and instructor whose online community is called The Insider’s Studio. She offers weekly classes, tips and tricks, and opportunities to paint, learn, and grow. Amanda also offers larger online classes, like her recent Abstract Faces class, that are open to anyone. This past year has seen the temporary closing of her retail space, but she has had success selling her collections of art online. Artist Ali Manning creates under the website name Vintage Page Designs. She makes handmade books, using papers and stitching at the binding. Her own mixed media books are inspired by the forests of New England, where she’s lived for over 20 years, and the gardens of her home country England. Two years ago, she created an online community called Handmade Book Club. She provides tutorials, challenges, and a place where like-minded artists can exchange tips and ideas. Nicole Galluccio is a painter in South Florida. In her paintings, she illustrates flowers, fruits, and pollinators, using bright, bold colors. Nicole is a master at color theory, and uses many shades of each color that she’s mixed herself. In this past year, she’s added teaching to her business as she entered the world of Zoom classes. Artist Lori Siebert does not limit herself with the art that she makes. One day it might be mixed media paintings, and the next it might be 3D birds made from the items in her junk drawer. She feeds her curiosity by constantly exploring different mediums and techniques. Lori teaches in the U.S. as well as overseas, when she’s able to teach in person. She has also licensed her artwork with many different companies and products, and she shares a lot of her tips for other artists who would like to get into licensing their designs. Seth Apter is a mixed media artist in New York City. He designs and sells art supplies and tools for a few companies. Using these supplies in his art, he combines paint, ink, stencils, stamps, and various papers to build his mixed media creations. His business used to be filled with travels all over the world where he would teach his techniques. Since he hasn’t been traveling, he does weekly Facebook Live demos, talks, and now online classes. Rachel Davies is a mosaic artist in Dunblane, Scotland. She uses slate that she finds near her home, plus stones and glass for her creations. Like so many artists, her in person classes stopped in 2020, but she figured out how to offer online classes and get the mosaic supplies to her students. Artist Cathy Nichols is in Asheville, North Carolina, where she’s an artist, teacher, and author. Her medium is paper and paint, and as she says, a little magic. Her artwork is painted collage layers, and she puts her art on washi tape, pouches, and oracle cards. She even offers a class where you can learn how to make your own oracle deck. Cathy’s book is called Storytelling Art Studio, where she explains how you can create mixed media art to tell impactful stories. Artist Taylor White paints in a figurative style, which just means her paintings contain people. Of course, that’s just part of her art. She’ll paint the human form, in many different positions, add geometric shapes and colors, and create such depth and movement. After attending the Savannah College of Art & Design, she traveled overseas, doing illustration and later painting. She developed her skills in mural painting, focusing on young subjects. After returning to Raleigh, North Carolina, she created many murals on outside walls as well as in restaurants and office buildings. Tanya Ortega is the Founder of the National Parks Arts Foundation, which offers residencies to artists at a variety of our National Parks. She started as a photography artist with a long-time love of the outdoors. Discovering that the Parks did not have residency programs, she created her own. After providing residencies for herself and her artist friends, she decided it was time to open up the residencies to any artist in the world, so she formed her Foundation. Their residencies are now open to artists of many disciplines, including visual artists, virtual artists, dancers, musicians and composers, and writers. David Ruggeri is in St. Louis where he paints in a brightly colored graffiti style. His passion for the outdoors is apparent in his work, with many paintings featuring endangered animals. He travels to outdoor festivals to sell his art, and he’s glad that they’re returning and he can get them back on his schedule. North Carolina collage artist Catherine Rains has spent years developing and evolving her collage style, taking classes and trying new materials. When artist Holly Wach moved to Rhode Island, she began to notice the birds that were visiting her yard. Soon they became the new subjects or her watercolor and pastel artwork. Whether it’s song birds, shore birds, or raptors, Holly perfectly recreates their colors and movement, as well as the leaves and branches where they perch. Artist Mei Chen uses clay to create her handmade hands and she makes them into jewelry. She matches the skin color to the wearer, and the hands are often holding something interesting, like a jewel or a heart. Mei is a self-taught artist who developed her own style and techniques. Chloe Amy Avery is an embroidery artist in London. She uses layers of stitches and many colors to make very realistic pieces. Often, she takes nostalgic items for her subjects, like comfort food or snacks you would get at a fair. Her latest subject is flames, and she uses many colors to depict the fire at the end of a match or a candle. Artist Lara Cornell lives in Minneapolis with her family. Her career has been built around her love of travel and meeting artisans all over the world. She hosted retreats in Europe, and she had a collaborative art space near her home. Like many, her travel abruptly ended, and she ultimately closed her brick-and-mortar space. Instead, Lara took time to educate herself on business skills and how creatives can improve their marketing, branding, and focus. Carolyn Peeler lives in Vancouver, Canada. She created her company Prone to Wander Retreats to offer art and culture retreats in various countries. Andrea Ehrhardt is a mural and lettering artist. She got her start painting for Bass Pro Shops, learning from other muralists and developing her skills. Nick Bantock is a writer and artist who resides in Victoria, British Columbia. His Griffin & Sabine books uniquely contained collage art in the form of postcards and letters that you could unfold and read. He has also written illustrated novels, such as The Forgetting Room, as well as books on creativity, like Urgent 2nd Class and The Trickster’s Hat. He uses old papers, maps, and photos, and combines them with rubber stamps, handwriting, and artwork. Artist Virginia Kraljevic lives in New York City with her family. She’s a pen and ink artist and designer who creates intricate artwork that has appeared on an array of surfaces from clothing, wall decor, giftware, and books to fabric. Virginia has also created artwork for Ikea and many other clients. She tells us how she began licensing her artwork and providing custom art for businesses. Artist Margaux Jones creates tarot card and oracle decks under the name MJ Cullinane. Using digital collage to create her cards, she adds as many as 100 layers to her artwork. She also creates the stories behind the cards and the companion books for the decks. This includes a lot of research and a lot of writing before she even starts the artwork. Her first deck was a Crow Tarot Deck, and her latest is an oracle deck called Roar that provides guidance from 54 women in history. Kara Valentino Ffield is a mixed media artist from Pensacola, Florida. She lives near woods and also the beach, and she’s inspired by the nature that is all around her. In her art, she uses watercolors, gouache, and pencils to create a scene and story about the animals, trees, and flowers that she sees. Recently she’s been adding embroidery right on the watercolor paper art. She also tells us how she works in collections and releases them out to her followers. Doris Wai is a lettering artist and illustrator in Toronto. Her business is called Love Lettering, and she specializes in lettering on non-paper surfaces. Artist Angie Follensbee-Hall, who lives in Vermont, is a mixed media artist who makes her own paper as the base for her creations. Maria Tritico was a jewelry artist, art therapist, and art educator here in Palm Beach County where I live. I’m replaying my episode with her from October, 2018 with a new introduction. Last week, Maria died when she was hit by stray gunfire while she was sitting on the beach. She was a friend of mine, as she was to just about everyone in the Palm Beach County art community. Maria had just turned 32, had just closed on a house with her fiancé, and had plans to get married this December 31st. I would like my listeners to know that there was an amazing, beautiful, and talented artist named Maria Tritico. She was loved, and she spread her love to so many groups of people that she worked with. In this interview, we talk about her jewelry making and how her style has developed over the years. We also talk about her art therapy degree and how she was starting an art therapy program at the Lighthouse Art Center in Tequesta, Florida. When we talked, Maria was teaching jewelry classes at the Lighthouse. Since then, she became the Director of Education. The staff of the Lighthouse Art Center are like one big family, and losing Maria is a big loss for them. But it’s also a loss for our local art community, as well as the groups Maria helped with her art therapy. Rebecca Sower is a mixed media artist from the Nashville, Tennessee area. She started painting and drawing seriously about five years ago. Liz Constable is a book artist from Auckland, New Zealand. Liz creates under the name Book Art Studios, in a studio near her home. Artist Gabe Langholtz paints in what he calls a naïve modern style. Sometimes he paints still lives, perhaps a table holding a few objects. Sometimes he paints figures, often holding something. For over two decades, artist Deanne Fitzpatrick has hooked rugs, first making them to warm her home, and then elevating them to gallery-worthy artwork. She is inspired by the land and water around her home in Nova Scotia, Canada. Not only does she make beautiful landscape rugs, but she also creates abstracts, and impressionistic rugs. Artist Lorraine Bell was a part of the group that started The Documented Life Project, about seven years ago. Rachelle Kearl is a painter that is inspired by the wildflowers in Alberta, Canada. She creates beautiful floral paintings that are sometimes very detailed and sometimes more graphic in design. For today’s episode, I’m having a follow-up conversation with artists Shannon Torrence and Carl Stoveland. I first spoke with Shannon and Carl about two months ago in Episode 176. They told me about their upcoming month-long artist residency at Dry Tortugas National Park, which is 70 miles west of Key West, Florida. On Loggerhead Key, Shannon would be painting with acrylics and Carl would be taking photographs, videos, and painting watercolors. They were taken out there by boat with everything they needed for a month: paints, paper, easel, cameras and film, and of course, their clothing and food. If you haven’t listened to Episode 176 yet, I suggest you go back and listen to that first. They told me how they applied for this artist residency through the National Parks Arts Foundation, and that they planned to make a documentary film of this residency. Their final product is changing a little bit, as you’ll hear in today’s episode, as a result of what they saw during their time on the island. But they’ve returned with many paintings, photos, and film footage, and they’re excited to share their experiences with us. I first spoke with artist Anthony Burks in Episode 27. Anthony is a friend who lives near me, and we have worked together on art shows for the past few years. Anthony is a colored pencil artist who creates on paper, and often on wood and other found objects. He adds other materials, like charcoal and watercolor too. He had a full year scheduled with out of state art shows as well as his teaching and mentoring gigs, which all had to be cancelled. Before the pandemic, he had applied to a local fellowship, and he received it this summer. That has opened up many opportunities for him, including a move into a group studio space. He probably has worked harder than he ever has this year, creating new projects and seeking out artist grants. Craig McInnis is an artist based in West Palm Beach, Florida. For the past few years, he’s been developing his abstract fine art, while still working with his pop/surreal character-driven art that often depicts a social message. In the past few months, he’s found that some cities and art groups are working to support artists, and he’s received art grants as well as many mural opportunities. He’s also moved his teaching to online classes, and he continues to expand his art career with collaborations with other artists and business leaders. He tells us how he got his start and how for a big part of his year he was the Creative Director of a large group of haunted houses, known as Fright Nights. The artists Carl Stoveland and Shannon Torrence are from Lake Worth Beach, Florida. In 2 weeks, they’ll be leaving for a month at the Dry Tortugas National Park, which is west of the Florida Keys, for an artist residency through the National Parks Arts Foundation. Carl is a photographer and he also does watercolors. Shannon is a landscape artist who works with acrylics. They’ll be bringing their art supplies, as well as everything else they’ll need to live for a month on a deserted island. They’ll be off the grid while they’re there, but they’ll be very busy making art and working on their residency project, a documentary film about their time on the island. Artist London Kaye is an LA-based yarn bomber. In her form of street art, she creates crocheted art pieces that she leaves in a public place for others to enjoy. Artist Tracy Verdugo lives on the southeast coast of Australia. Normally she spends the summer traveling the world to teach her classes. In fact, I tried to get her on the podcast last year, but she was traveling so much I couldn’t pin her down! I’m glad to be talking with her today. Artist Tonia Jenny spent years as an art book editor. She now provides editorial services, coaching and online art courses. Artist Andrew Hollimon is originally from St. Louis, but he’s been in the West Palm Beach area of Florida for the past few years. Mixed media artist Rae Missigman teaches online classes, sharing her methods for making small and quick art pieces covered with her signature mark making. She partners with artist Sandi Keene for some of her classes, and they’ve managed to produce some of those classes virtually. Nick Onken has had a successful business as a photographer for the past decade. He takes portraits for personal use or business branding, and he also does travel photography. In addition, he offers a podcast where he talks with creatives who share their stories and lessons learned from their business. For the past few months, he hasn’t been able to travel from his home in New York to photograph or interview people. This has allowed him to pivot into the artful world of making custom hats. She shares her techniques through her Youtube channel, Instagram posts, and now through Facebook. Sahar Masarati is a cake artist from the Los Angeles area. Not only does she make great tasting cakes, but she also creates beautiful masterpieces of sugar flowers cascading down the cakes. Because she works with brides and others who are hosting celebrations, every cake artwork that she creates is a commission, as she works with them to determine their vision for their special day. Artist Carrie Schmitt lives near Seattle, Washington. I first spoke with Carrie way back in August, 2018 in Episode #21. Two years later, and I’m talking to Carrie again. She’s accomplished so much with her art business, and I was happy to hear what she’s working on next. Carrie paints beautiful flowers on canvas, and she has put those designs on many items including home goods and clothing. For almost a year, she’s been working on her second book, called The Story of Every Flower, which will be coming out in September of this year. Since we’ve all been staying closer to home, Deb has encouraged makers to keep marketing their handmade items, even if you have to pivot and offer different items or different versions. Seth Apter is an artist who teaches mixed media classes all over the U.S. and overseas. Kristin Williams is an artist who owns a retail shop and workshop space where Seth and others teach called Ephemera Paducah in Kentucky. After Seth and Kristin realized they had to cancel a lot of their in person classes for the year, they wanted to know, Where does the art community go from here? When can they offer in person classes again, and how do they do it? We talk about their survey results and what they both have been doing while they shelter in place. Kristin Williams is the owner of Ephemera Paducah in Kentucky. She hosts artist instructors for weekend art classes at her shop. Her students come from all over to learn painting and mixed media techniques from art experts. The artist instructors rely on her location to bring them many students for their classes every year. In March, these classes had to abruptly stop when we all sheltered in place for the coronavirus. Kristin is still offering goods from the retail side of her business, and she’s evaluating how she can restart the live classes in the future. Artist Connie Solera was known for many years as the genius and creative force behind the 21 Secrets series of online art classes. She was also known as the owner of Dirty Footprints Studio. Artist Jessica Hitchcock lives in St. Louis, Missouri. We first talked on the podcast about a year ago, in April of 2019. She had just quit her day job in February to be a full-time artist. She had been painting for a few years part-time, showing and selling her paintings as well as doing the occasional live painting. She went all in, and in a matter of a year she has offered a few collections of her artwork, in her vibrant and bold color style, she’s painted live at a wedding and other events, and now she’s sharing what she’s learned through a year of hard work with others on her blog. Artist Dina Wakley is a teaching artist who keeps a full calendar of art classes in the U.S. and beyond. While she’s canceled upcoming classes and is hopeful for the second half of this year, she’s started offering online classes on her website. She’s also appearing in Facebook Live videos a couple times a week. We originally spoke in November of 2019, where she told me about her travel and teaching plans for the upcoming year. We spoke again on March 31st, a few weeks into everyone’s self-quarantine, and she told me about her plans to offer online art classes. Today I’m talking with artist Kecia Deveney. We spoke on April 2nd, when most states had shut down businesses and public areas. Kecia and her family self-quarantined before most people because they are caregivers for her son who would be extra vulnerable to the virus. She’s had to cancel her in person art classes and scale down her other art projects because the caregiving is full-time. She is still able to make art daily, and we talk about how she does that and how she manages this stressful time. Kecia lives in New Jersey, and she’s a prolific artist who makes art dolls, collage, and painting. Caylee Grey runs the Get Messy Art online art school. Caylee created a community of people from all over the world who enjoy the art instruction videos that she and other artists create for the group. They also meet virtually for lessons and art get togethers. She also offers meetups through Zoom as well as classes that people can buy even if they’re not a member of her community. We spoke on March 31, from Caylee’s home in Germany. At that time, we had partial shut downs of services and activities, but not a complete shut down like we have now.
