Section V: Separation
We believe that all the saved should live in such a manner as to not bring reproach upon their Savior and Lord; and, that separation from all religious apostasy, all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices and associations is commanded of God. Although we believe that absolute immunity to sin takes place only when believers are taken to be with the Lord, we do realize the necessity of forsaking a habitual walk in sin (II Timothy 3:1-5, Romans 12:1- 2, Romans 14:13, I John 2:15-17, II John 9-11, II Corinthians 6:14-17, James 2:1-26, II Peter 3:18).
PURPOSE: A Doctrinal Series for Heritage Bible Chapel’s Sunday School, under the premise that it is vital to review and teach through our Statement of Faith (Doctrine Essentials) with some regularity to avoid “theological amnesia and spiritual myopia.” The subjects are taught using a scripture-first approach to feature highlights of our confession in a 30-minute teaching setting. Teachers are encouraged to focus on main points, work in discussion and application as appropriate, and supplement with HBC’s Constitution, church history, and other resources. Care must be given to isolate the main points due to time constraints.
LOCATION & TIME: This class will be located in the Sanctuary. Attendees are encouraged to begin arriving at 9:00 a.m. Teaching will start by 9:10 a.m.
Section II: God
We believe in one triune God, existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory, Who possess the same attributes and perfections yet carry out distinct offices (Deuteronomy 6:4, II Corinthians 13:14, I Peter 1:2, Matthew 28:19).
- We believe that God the Father is the absolute omnipotent ruler of the universe, sovereign in creation, providence, and redemption, a perfect Spirit in Whom is perfect holiness, and infinite wisdom (Psalm 99:6; 103:19, 139:7-12, 147:5, Isaiah 44:24, Malachi 3:6, Matthew 7:7-8, John 4:24, I John 4:8, Romans 11:36).
- We believe that Jesus Christ is the divine (John 1:1, 10:30, 38, Colossians 2:9), eternal (John 1:2), Son of God (Matthew 3:17, 8:29, 11:27, 16:16, 17:5, Mark 1:1, I John 5:9-12), that He was miraculously conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:18-23, Luke 1:34-35, Galatians 4:4), that He perfectly revealed and accomplished the will of God, taking upon Himself the demands and necessities of human nature (Philippians 2:5-8); that He identified Himself completely with mankind (John 1:14, Romans 1:3-4) yet was and remains without sin (I Peter 2:21-23, Hebrews 4:15), that He literally and vicariously died, was buried and raised from the dead (Romans 6:4, 9, I Corinthians 15:4, 20, I Thessalonians 1:10), and that He ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9), and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Romans 8:34, Hebrews 9:24, I John 2:1-2).
- We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, that He convicts the world of sin (John 16:8-11), helps (John 14:16-17, 26) and baptizes all believers into the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-14). We believe that He is the divine Teacher (John 14:26, I John 2:27) who guides believers into truth (John 16:13), and that it is the privilege and duty of all the saved to be filled and controlled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18, I John 2:20).

We'll give thought to what it means to trust God when God leaves us in the dark with unanswered questions. We'll also ask if some spiritual conflict might be unnecessary? We, humans, tend to filter God through only one adjective, like "love." God is love, but He is much more than that. In the same way, if we view God's grace of love from only one angle, we risk distorting what love truly is. Love, as defined by God, is multifaceted. Sunday, August 8, 2021. 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 | “Love Builds Up." In this text, the apostle answers a question from the church in Corinth about knowledge. If “we have the mind of Christ,” how do we then think like Christ? What do we do with the “knowledge” that we have received? This question comes to light in Corinth through a particular set of circumstances surrounding food sacrificed to idols. Should Christians eat of it, or should they refrain? The apostle goes about answering this question by encouraging the church to “think theologically.” Doing so will result in a very real outcome called “love.”
Sunday, August 1, 2021. 1 Corinthians 7:25-40 | “This World Is Passing Away.” God's Word does not speak to every detail or circumstance of life. Sometimes, we have to make a judgment call to know what to do. Thankfully, God's Word teaches us how to form good and godly opinions and recognize the same when we need such counsel.
The church in Corinth has questions about matters that Jesus' teaching did not specifically address. This text reveals the apostle's mind at work as he reasons and wrestles with the counsel that he gives them in response. He does this in a principled and godly way that offers a framework for us when we need counsel, too, concerning matters about which God's Word provides no direct command.
Sunday, July 25, 2021. 1 Corinthians 7:1-24 | “The Life That The Lord Has Assigned.” The church in Corinth wrote to the apostle concerning issues affecting their fellowship with one another in Christ. Thankfully, God’s Word preserves the answers in 1 Corinthians for our benefit today. Chapter 7 turns a corner in this letter and addresses first the questions involving marriage. Then, as the apostle ends this section, he reminds us all that the Lord is in control of our lives in every circumstance.
Sunday, July 18, 2021. 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 | “You Are Not Your Own.” What does it mean for Jesus to be “Lord”? This text makes it clear. To call Jesus “Lord” means I am not my own! Jesus owns me because He purchased me. In response, I worship God with all my heart, soul, mind and body.
Sunday, July 11, 2021. 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 | “Do Not Be Deceived.” The Church of God belongs to God. This makes Her distinct from any other assemblies found in the world! For this reason, the apostle comes down hard on the church in Corinth when their shameful actions confuse this distinction among themselves, and especially in the eyes of unbelievers in the world. Simply put, the church was deceived and their witness for Jesus as a consequence was lost! This text returns to a recurring theme of the Church’s identity in Christ, and ends with a powerful whisper of Gospel transformation and hope.
Sunday, July 4, 2021. John 4:1-42 | Why Are You Here?John 4 is a pivotal text on worship in the New Testament as evidenced by this conversation Jesus has with a woman from Samaria. If we as Christ’s Church ever question what true worship is, we can find Jesus explaining the answer here. What begins as a simple request by Jesus for a drink of water, turns into a witnessing conversation that ends with this woman becoming a witness for Jesus and bringing many people to Him. This sermon highlights the witness of worship.
Sunday, June 13, 2021. 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 | “Purge the Evil Person.” 1 Corinthians sounds like a harsh letter directed at a church with significant sin, but it is a “holy harshness” and “divine discipline” meant not to punish, but to purify! The Church is powerful when the Church is pure. Because God is holy, His Church must care about Church discipline.
Sunday, June 06, 2021. 1 Corinthians 4:1-21 | “Be Imitators of Me." How would you describe the role of a minister? What expectations do you have for him? How is a minister held accountable? Prepare for your expectations to be challenged by God’s Word! The apostle explains that a minister is a servant, a steward, a spectacle, and a spiritual father who represents Christ.
Sunday, May 30, 2021. 1 Corinthians 3:1-23 | “Do You Not Know?” There is no good reason for the church of Jesus Christ to be ignorant about what God has made known. Yet, the church in Corinth was just that - ignorant. The apostle does not hold back in his rebuke. He calls the saints what they are: “fleshly” and “infants” and even names their sin. Perhaps they might grow up and rid themselves of the destruction their division is causing, before it is too late!?
Sunday, May 23, 2021. 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 | “We Have the Mind of Christ.” This passage of Scripture does not offer concrete application or specific commands to obey, but it does tell us what we have been given in Christ. The Church has the mind of Christ and has received the Holy Spirit from God to understand as those who are mature, the wisdom of God through the cross. We will learn that the wisdom of God is more than mere knowledge, it is a knowledge that acts.
Sunday, May 16, 2021. 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5 | “We Preach Christ Crucified.” “We preach Christ.” GREAT! Few would have any problem with that statement. Now, add one more word, the word “crucified,” and everything changes! Jews stumble, Greeks scoff, and a division is immediately made among hearers who are being saved and hearers who are perishing. This is the power of the cross of Christ, as the word of the cross, the gospel message is preached.
Sunday, May 9, 2021. Matthew 15:1-9 | “Honor Your Father and Your Mother” [Mother's Day]. The command to “honor your father and your mother” is one of the oldest commandments in the Bible. So what does it mean to “honor” someone, especially our mothers? In this Mother’s Day sermon, we all learn from Jesus that honor involves more than speaking well about someone. Honor is an action that proceeds from the heart and will cost us something. Whatever is costly, is valuable, and God’s Word makes it clear that God values mothers.
Sunday, May 2, 2021. 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 | “Is Christ Divided?” Is Christ divided? The answer to this question seems so obvious — No! But why then, did this question need to be asked and the problem of division raised? The church in Corinth was together, but they were also divided. Members had aligned with certain leaders in a way that turned their follow-ship into confessions that threatened their fellowship. So the apostle exhorts them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to not be divided, because ANY division in the church of Christ represents something that is simply not true of Christ. Christ is not divided, so division must not be permitted among Christ’s people who are known by His name, united with His Baptism, and proclaiming His Cross.
Sunday, April 25, 2021. 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 | “God Is Faithful.” God’s faithfulness is more than just a theme for this introductory thanksgiving, it is a foundation upon which this entire letter of 1 Corinthians is written. Because God is always faithful, Paul has reason to be thankful - not for what the church in Corinth is currently making of themselves, but for what God has already made of them in Christ, by His abundant grace!
Sunday, April 18, 2021. 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 | “Called To Be Saints.” When we introduce ourselves to others, how long does it take to mention Jesus? In the introduction to the letter known as 1 Corinthians, Paul gets right to the point and says more about God than he says about himself. 1 Corinthians is a letter written to a specific audience - “the church of God” and great detail is given in these opening verses to explain just who that Church is. This letter was written not only to the saints in first century Corinth, but also to us, “who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Sunday, April 11, 2021. Matthew 28:16-20 | “Behold, I Am With You" [Easter, Pt. 2]. In context, “The Great Commission” is the climax of the Easter story! It presents the fulfillment of the promises of Easter and propels the Church forward on mission to make disciples in submission to Jesus’ total authority. Positioned at the end of Matthew’s Gospel, we are reminded again that genuine faith is not based on what is seen, but acts upon what is heard in the form of obedience to God’s Word.
Sunday, April 4, 2021. Matthew 28:1-10 | “He Is Not Here" [Easter Sunday]. We are not told the details of how Jesus was raised from the dead. We are only told that He was! In this way, the Scriptures keep before us what is most important. Easter is not a new beginning, but another confirmation that Jesus is who He says He is, doing what He said He would do!
Sunday, March 28, 2021. Matthew 7:28-29 | “When Jesus Finished These Words" [Palm Sunday]. This Palm Sunday coincides with the final sermon in a preaching series through The Sermon on the Mount. The Sermon on the Mount invites us to “Come and Hear.” These last two verses of Matthew 7 highlight Christ’s authority and prepare us for a new, Easter invitation to “Come and See!”
Sunday, March 21, 2021. Matthew 7:24-27 | "It Did Not Fall" [The Life]. Everyone hears, but not everyone does. This is the lesson Jesus reinforces at the end of The Sermon on the Mount using a parable of two builders. Sunday, March 14, 2021. Matthew 7:15-23 | "On That Day Many Will Say..." [The Truth]. Many enter the wide gate, walk the easy way, and are destroyed. How is it possible to walk this way of destruction and not know it? The answer is frightening — many are deceived. This text begins with a warning to guard against those who deceive. It ends with a warning that we not deceive ourselves!
Sunday, March 07, 2021. Matthew 7:13-14 | “Enter Through the Narrow Gate" [The Way]. These two verses are commonly misinterpreted. Jesus is not presenting two paths as options for his disciples to choose from. The choice is not one of gates, roads or destinations. It is rather, that of a response to believing His Word, following Him, and obeying Him!
Sunday, February 28, 2021. Matthew 7:1-12 | “His Kingdom and Righteousness" - Part 2. Righteousness is a relational word and a priority that followers of Jesus actively seek. Jesus warns against an improper form of judgment. Charitable judgement represents righteousness informed by love. Condemning judgment represents righteousness ruined by hypocrisy. Our source of Kingdom righteousness is with the Father, of whom we ask, seek and knock for it.
Sunday, February 21, 2021. Matthew 6:19-34 | “His Kingdom and Righteousness" - Part 1. While the words “kingdom” and “righteousness” seem familiar, they are practically and theologically foreign to us without Jesus bringing them near. These two words summarize the teachings of The Sermon on the Mount. In Part 1, we focus on Jesus’ teaching about treasures and worries. In doing so, we learn what it means to live as a people under God’s rule and reign.
Sunday, February 14, 2021. Matthew 6:1-18 | “Our Father in Heaven." Jesus does not speak about the kingdom of heaven without speaking about righteousness repeatedly. What is righteousness and why does Jesus speak about it so much? This teaching is worth paying attention to. It is not framed as a blessing, but instead as a warning - beware!
Sunday, February 7, 2021. Matthew 5:21-48 | “Your Heavenly Father Is Perfect.” Jesus begins to reveal the Heavenly Father to His followers. As the Father is, so we will be in Christ — perfect. What does it mean that our Heavenly Father is perfect? What must we do to be perfect too? The answer points to one inexhaustible theme and working of the Holy Spirit in us: Love.
Sunday, January 31, 2021. Matthew 5:17-20 | “You Will Never Enter.” Jesus makes a shocking statement: “You will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” You may be surprised to learn that this is not an evangelistic appeal to the lost. It is a statement to those who are called — His followers! Entrance into the kingdom of heaven is restricted to those who have a “surpassing” righteousness. What we do with what we’ve been given matters. Listen as Jesus teaches and turns a declaration of condemnation into a conditional statement, pointing us to the gospel message and the righteousness He offers.
Sunday, January 24, 2021. Matthew 5:13-16 | "Let Your Light Shine Before People." Whatever Jesus does personally in us, He does publicly through us. By the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, our new identity in Jesus makes us salt and light for people on earth, to the glory of God the Father!
Sunday, January 17, 2021. Matthew 5:3-12 | "For Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." If we are not content as we are, we will not be content in what will be. The kingdom of heaven will not change our present circumstances, but the King of heaven will give us contentment in them. True blessing is knowing Jesus and submitting to His reign as we wait for the fullness of His coming kingdom.
Sunday, January 10, 2021. Matthew 5:1-2 | "He Began to Teach." This introduction to The Sermon on the Mount invites us to come to Jesus before we hear what he has to teach. We learn the difference between following Jesus and being a follower of Jesus, the need for repentance and the context of God’s kingdom. This message is an invitation for all to “Come and Hear!”

We may not have a plan, but God does! This year-end message reminds us to expend less energy on trying to discern the events and circumstances of God's will and to spend more time with God Himself. God's will is for us to enjoy the future with Him!

Sunday, April 5, 2020. "Hosanna" is a cry for help, but also a shout of praise! Jesus rode into Jerusalem to triumphal shouts of Hosanna! But by the end of the week, those shouts would be changed to cries for his death on a cross. Jesus, the king of righteousness and salvation, was coming to save but not in the way the people expected. This Palm Sunday message prepares the hearer for the events of Holy Week.

February 23, 2020. How certain are we that the voice guiding us is the Holy Spirit's and not our own? Would God lead us in one direction only to then contradict that leading through other godly people, even those closest to us? Discerning God's will involves a tension that cannot and should not be so easily explained away. In this text, we learn that the Holy Spirit gives us certainty of God’s will, by empowering us all to say “may the will of the Lord be done.”

Sunday, November 19, 2019. Throughout the book of Acts, God is presented as working miracles, that when they become known, lead to faith in Jesus. One such miracle involves a disciple named "Tabitha." She is known for her good works and acts of charity, but becomes ill and dies. When what happens next becomes known, many believe in the Lord!
Sunday, November 10, 2019. If the Lord called your name, what would your response be? Would it be, "Here I am, Lord!" or, "Who are you, Lord?" The sight that guides a disciple's life is a spiritual sight, a gift from God, that sees Jesus for who He is -- the Son of God!

Sunday, September 15, 2019. At the beginning of Matthew 3, the Scriptures speak of John the Baptist. At the end of Matthew 3, the Scriptures speak of Jesus the Christ. Both are presented preaching the same message. It is a message of repentance. John prepares the way for Jesus by calling the people to repentance. It is a relelvant message for for the Church today, as we prepare for Jesus to return by living a lifestyle of repentance.
