Let's embrace fear, pain, problems, and what we like to call...the suck. Welcome to the grind!. The challenges, collectively referred to as The Grind, are the price you pay for personal growth and success. Hosts Joey Tork and Jason Harmon introduce you to and guide you through - The Grind.
“Redemption is the salvation of a soul that is lost, usually from human error”. Jason and Joey return for episode 98 of the Grind, Redemption Road. The guys waste no time jumping into the theme of the episode and they start by defining redemption, and what it means to them. Joey talks about the destiny aspect of when you are doing what you are supposed to do. Joey then describes how redemption is akin to the hero’s journey and he delves into some points from ‘The Daily Stoic’ by Ryan Holiday. Jason talks about the position he finds himself in, and how he understands that you have to surrender to the process sometimes to actually progress. Jason then talks about rejection, how it can physically affect you and control you subconsciously. “It sounds sexy to say ‘Fail Forward’, but guess what, in order to fail forward you actually have to fail”. Joey reminds the audience that there is always someone worse off, especially those who are yet to realise where they are failing. Jason describes how when you are going through a tough time it can be hard to see the forest for the trees. Joey and Jason then talk a bit about how you can transform yourself with discipline, but it requires honest conversations with yourself. This leads the guys to reflect on the nature of the conversations that they have on the podcast and why most people never have conversations on that wavelength. “If you don’t like your story, you need to figure out how to change it” The final topic the guys cover is the ending of your life movie, or the finish line of the race. Whatever it is for you, if the ending was now, how would you feel. The guys see this as a great catalyst for action and they weigh up why disregarding what people who aren’t important to you think is important. Lastly Jason talks about why you need someone to talk to about the real things in your life, the advice is simple, find someone to talk to. Grind on. “Be detached from the outcome but enjoy the process”. This week on the Grind, Joey is holding down the fort for a solo interview with Tom Wheeler. Tom is a young, up and coming agent with Keller Williams and at 22 he already has 4 years of experience. The theme of this episode is defining moments and how you should try to react to and perceive them. Joey and Tom initially discuss what drove him to push past the stigma associated with younger estate agents, and Tom talks about how the entrepreneurial aspect of real estate helped fuel his passion. Joey brings up the intuition that a person feels when they are in the right position in life and the guys discuss some methods for analysing whether you are moving towards that or not. “I am in full control of the abundance in the universe”. Next, Tom and Joey talk about not being obsessed with the destination but focusing on enjoying the journey. Tom talks about how it can be useful to disregard other people’s expectations when setting them for yourself. He then brings up anxiety, and Tom explains how anxiety is born out of lack of control and how understanding that can lead you to let go of that need for control. Joey unpacks how the element of not being present in modern life (due mainly to technology) can be massively detrimental to your awareness of opportunities. “The power of the pause is so extreme”. Following the discussion on being present, Tom and Joey throw some ideas back and forth about perception and how you can use a positive mindset as a tool to reduce the damage from negative experiences. The guys bookend this by making a point about balance and how none of this works without taking balance into account. Tom tells some anecdotes about some moments of reflection he has had, and Joey builds on this by talking about the importance of pausing, whether it’s pausing work, your worries or the expectations of others. Joey finishes up by explaining to Tom how far ahead of his peers he is at 22, and the guys give some final thoughts on the discussion. This week on The Grind Joey and Jason welcome Dan Meadors to the show. Dan and his business partner Eric Lambert started selling on Amazon in 2011 using a credit card with a $600 limit. Since then they have utilized Retail Arbitrage, Online Arbitrage, Private Label & primarily Wholesale to generate over $10,000,000 in sales, with their business continuing to see exponential growth. Dan and Eric also developed ‘The Wholesale Formula’, the premiere training program for selling products wholesale on Amazon. Before the interview the guys have a little catch up, Jason finds out that Joey doesn’t like The Princess Bride and they talk about the fun you can have with made up words like ‘snowpocalypse’. Dan begins the interview by regaling the guys with the story of how he first started his amazon selling business and what it is like starting an operation with very little capital. He then goes into how the infrastructure of Amazon can help new entrepreneurs operate at a higher scale than they otherwise would have. Jason and Joey pick Dan’s brain about the finer points of his early operations and how he has grown along with amazon itself. Dan tells a few great stories in the interview one of which saw him buy two entire Sears stores at 2% retail, with all of his personal capital. The guys also discuss the transition from being a foot soldier to a general within your own business and what eventually lead Dan to the wholesale model. The main message that Dan promotes is being proactive about your business. This goes hand in hand with Joey and Jason’s ethos (hence the title of the show) and the guys discuss at length the importance of making the initial movements towards your goals and maintaining momentum afterwards. So, take note ladies and gentlemen, there was a lot of good stuff in this one. Grind on. "You should interrogate every minute". This week Joey joins Jason from Fort Knox and the guys start the show with a little bit of a catch up. They talk about how even though they get less opportunities to speak to each other than most friends, their conversations are probably more meaningful because of the podcast. Joey tells us about the new book Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport, and how it suggests that you view your time as a ‘Concrete and valuable substance’. He brings up some points from the book and talks about striking a balance between relaxing and being productive, so as to not waste time. "Think about all the minutes you have wasted this month". Jason then explains the dichotomy in his life that affects a lot of people, in that he felt like half entrepreneur/businessman and half creative hippie and how it has affected his mindset. This leads Joey and Jason to the law of diminishing returns when it comes to time expended and happiness gained. The guys then move on to discussing choices and the constant internal battle with your own hedonism, Jason builds on this by talking about the pressure of the constant growth dynamic and how both cause a strain on your psyche. "If you cant see a path to joy, you might be wasting your time". Joey and Jason then start to discuss the finite nature of the human condition and how all of the extraneous noise of our lives all falls away towards the end. They contemplate the topic for a while and discuss how focusing on spending time with family and friends is a must. If you want to be content at the end of your journey. The logical next step the guys explore is to do with deciding when to sacrifice the required time that allows you to be with your friends and family to the extent that you want. Grind on. This week on The Grind we are joined by Lars Hedenborg, Lars is the founder of Real Estate B School, and the Co-Founder of High-Performance Real Estate Advisors. Real Estate B-School brings real-world tools, systems and strategies to top producing agents and team leaders. Lars’ lead generation websites attract hundreds of thousands of views annually and his team has used every available resource to create a database of over 10,000 buyers. Giving Lars a wealth of knowledge to impart on this episode of The Grind. The discussion starts with the guys going over some of the intrinsic road blocks that are involved with real estate and how that plays into the high turnover rate of rookie agents. Joey asks Lars for his thoughts on the current forces of disruption that are currently affecting the industry and the guys talk about how real estate is different from other industries in the way that it is reacting to that disruption. Next on the chopping block is the outdated training that most agents receive, Lars talks about how technology has simply nullified some of the more traditional training techniques that used to be used in training Later in the episode Jason brings up the rivalry between independent agents and those who are part of a team. This leads to a discussion about the importance of learning opportunities and why you need to be aware of the ones that might have otherwise passed you by. Joey extols the virtue of looking at your job as not just a hobby or a nine to five, but an endeavour that may spill into the rest of your life, and how you can deal with that in a positive way. Lars finishes the episode by going over some of the finer points of his programmes and how they have influenced his attitudes towards work and real estate education. Stay Frosty and Grind On. This episode of The Grind we welcome Srinivas Rao to the show. Joey starts the show with another reading from Srini’s book and take a minute to discuss some different perspectives on podcasting. The guys waste no time jumping into the interview, Joey and Jason start by asking Srinivas what inspired him to write his book ‘An Audience of One’. The guys reflect on what it was like riding the wave of early internet culture and what that culture might possibly be doing to the youth of today, growing up with the balance of real and digital interaction. Joey brings up the subject of measuring success and how hard it is to find a metric to measure meaning. Srinivas talks about being an early adopter of podcasting and how he learned early on that you have to commit to slow organic growth, to in turn gain a community as opposed to just numbers in your social blade statistics. Joey also talks about video and the difference it makes in interacting with people online. Srinivas makes it very clear to not see it as a substitute for real interaction however and then discusses expectations and how we need to overcome decades of social programming. Next the guys debate success and priorities, Srinivas talks about some pitfalls that everyone should try and avoid whilst pointing out why you shouldn’t base your expectations on past success’s. Finally Joey and Jason ask about distractions and for some tips on how to conserve will power and avoid a reduction in productive capacity. To finish up the guys talk a little bit about Srini’s new project before signing off. Grind on. Joey starts of the show this week with another quote from Srinivas Rao about how not to lead your best life. Then the guys begin to talk about saying no, how it hurts your priorities if you don’t say it and how knowing when to say it, can help you get deeper into a subject you would prefer to spend time on. Joey brings up the Steven Covey book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ and talks about some of the ideas in the book and how they pertain to prioritisation. Jason then explains why in the military you get up so early and how that can benefit everyone, before talking about ‘The Miracle Morning’ by Hal Elrod and why you shouldn’t be afraid of a 4:30am start. Joey explains the importance of being flexible with everything but the most important things in your calendar before the guys move on to discussing how you can actually figure out what those are. The guys talk about themes and techniques like color coding your calendar. “We are constantly being distracted from the most important things in our lives” This week on the Grind Joey and Jason explore the topic of distractions and 2019 kicks of with the guys back on the grind, working hard and revisiting the old nemesis of getting stuff done. Joey talks about the book ‘Audience of One’ by Srinivas Rao and why he reads it as often as possible. Jason discusses how people are their own worst enemy when it comes to maintaining focus and thus being able to react quickly and intelligently to obstacles. The guys then explore how the level of importance you place on your other life priorities can either help or hinder your resistance to distraction. “We’re visuals beings and visualisation is a huge thing” Jason and Joey then talk about some of the best things to focus on that help you avoid being distracted and how you can use your friends and family to assist you. Jason brings up how on average, 80% of your work will come from 20% of your activities and why you should focus on making the most of that 20% and not stressing about the rest. Joey brings up how it has become a positive sign for him when he finds out about big news events that he was unaware of, because it means he wasn’t distracted by them. “Mindless reactive consumption. That’s the society we live in now” Jason explains the 25-5 rule and talks about how it can help you prioritise properly. Joey brings up another version of an 80-20 split in the amount of people will actually follow their advice and seems to have accidentally stumbled onto the ‘Pareto Distribution’. After talking a bit more about the importance of family, Joey and Jason discuss why ‘no’ might be the word of 2019. Then before signing off the guys talk about the dangers of tech a little bit more and Joey gives us The Grind rules for 2019. 1. Know what’s important 2. Embrace the suck 3.
