This is a rerelease of the first podcast Jason Mudd did as a leader series. It is with Angie Fenton, a wonderful human who contributes so much to our community.
Jason Mudd sits down with Angie Fenton and talks about her thoughts on leadership, how life molds you into the person you are and how choice affects your attitude and direction. Angie is the editor in chief at ExtolMag.com where they highlight the beauty and joy of Southern Indiana. She is also the entertainment correspondent for WHAS 11's Great Day Live morning show. She is also an advocate for the voiceless, including animals of all kinds. Angie currently lives in Southern Indiana with her husband Jason and they are expecting their first child. Jason Mudd here- like many things in my life, serendipity played a large part in how I met John Michael Covey. I didn't seek him out, nor did he seek me out. But as he was researching real estate contacts in my town of Louisville, KY he came across an agent that knew of a property that I had which may have been of interest to John and she reached out to me. I wasn't actively looking to sell but I'm always open to talking so we arranged a meeting and tour. I'm not shy about asking questions and I do my best to be aware of the vibe I'm getting from people and it was there that John and I began talking and realized we had more in common than we thought.
John didn't come from money, wasn't the best student, and wasn't located in an area that one typically associates with a booming real estate market. As he says in the podcast, his town in California just recently got a Walmart. But he does have a strong faith was instilled in him by his adoptive parents, and I believe that has been one of the best tools that he has been able to leverage on his journey thus far. And I say thus far because his story is really only beginning. At 32 he has quickly taken action and made moves in the last few years which has completely changed his lot in life. His mindset on being a continual student helps him hone his vision for the future and I am confident that his biggest things are yet to come. And I'm very excited to be able to have a front row seat for them.

Host Jason Mudd talked with songwriter and hip hop/rap artist Don Michael Jr. about his road to success. Like many people, becoming great means making mistakes and learning by doing. The fact is that there is no replacement for experience. Something that really attracted me to Don Michael was his positive mindset, which is hugely helpful for anyone who is trying to create and make an impact. The world is full of critics and any amount of positive thought can do wonders with how a person views things that happen to them. Like yoga has taught me, everything and everyone is good and bad. It's just how you look at it.
Introduced to the music industry by his father, Don Michael showed an interest in creation around age 7 by figuring out how to essentially sample tracks and mix using his Fisher-Price turntable. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him from the beginning. At 11 after asking for a keyboard for Christmas, his dad took the cue and went ahead and gifted him with a professional Yamaha unit. He began composing and playing, eventually leading him to the songwriting world.
DMJ has seen his fare share of hiccups on this road, but as of late is experiencing a new level of recognition. He isn't what you'd expect for an up and coming rapper, as he's been on the scene for his entire life- all 42 years of it. Check out our talk and download his latest album titled 'This Is Not Music'.

His name is Nermin Dulalich and he immigrated from Bosnia to the United States as a refugee with his brother and mother during the Bosnian War. Like many immigrants, his journey is much more complex and multifaceted than anyone would imagine. But we know that pain and adversity can bring out some amazing traits in the right people, and today Nermin is a thriving entrepreneur and mentor in our wonderful city of Louisville.

Antigona Mehani came to the USA at age 11. Her home country is Kosovo, a war-torn state in southeastern Europe which as subject to a territorial dispute with Serbia. Her childhood was one of survival and didn't have a concept of a future that I grew up planning for. She credits this with a rushed path to adulthood and the self-awareness and compassion that has led her to be a mentor, advisor, and advocate for countless refugees, immigrants, and anyone else who feels underserved by a system that maintains that it was created for people just like her.
War-torn is a relative term, and we have many war-torn families and communities right here in the US. Right here in Louisville, KY. Check out this conversation that was supposed to run about 30 minutes but ended up being almost 90. It's just that good.

A very funny comedian who left the party way too early, Mitch Hedberg, has a bit that references the cheesy 80's commercials that would take a product and run over it with a steam roller to prove the product's durability. Or something. But Mitch was smart. Even better, he was cleaver. So he made the turn a question: "well what runs over the steamroller to assure it's quality?"
So what's my point?
My point is that pretty much everything, at some point, is held to a standard. This includes words, which, regardless of how you or I choose to use them, have a set meaning that was made long before you or me
Yet somehow we still mess them up. Here's a little rant from me about the real definition of 'work'..

It's funny how life can come full circle. And it's awesome to be able to follow up with someone that you remember getting started. Especially when they were getting started on Instagram, during the 2015-2016 period where everybody, and I do mean everybody, was on a mission to make the next hot social brand. I remember seeing @SlayByNickiJ and being impressed with the before and after photos they were posting and how often they were sending them out.
I have followed the brand online since then, and to be honest I'm not really sure why. But all the while I kept wondering to myself "who is this 'Nicki J'"?
Fast forward to the end of 2019 and her Instagram account has over 13,300 followers! She has such a solid reputation that some of her clients travel from as far as Arizona just to see her. That alone says a lot about the quality and professionalism that she provides.

Adoption has, for a long time, been one of those taboo topics that most people haven't really been too quick to openly discuss. And that's a shame. And if you are or have adopted, you may be wrestling with some of the pseudo-stigmas that sometimes fall in line with things that aren't understood. But don't get it twisted- adoption is a wonderful thing!
November is National Adoption Month, a time to celebrate the families and individuals that said 'Yes' to a bigger picture and raise awareness to a necessary cause that transcends social, political, racial and financial boundaries. The blanket awareness also helps those children and families hoping for adoption, to encourage them to create their family in the future.
Christina Dettman is Executive Director of Public Affairs for the Cabinet of Health and Family Services, and a board member of Wednesday's Child, a non-profit organization that grew out of the WLKY weekly news feature highlighting Kentuckiana children open to adoption.

The Louisville Civic Orchestra is one of the oldest continuously operating performing arts groups in the city of Louisville. They are the orchestra of the people for the people, utilizing all volunteers from players to administration each season. Growing up in Kentucky, hockey is not on the extracurricular list of most kids. We don't have anything against it, it just isn't ingrained in our culture the way it is in most northern states. Availability is also a factor. There are only two places to skate in town and just one with any kind of organized leagues: Iceland. So, hockey wasn't even a thought for most of us, and skating, in general, was novelty recreation that we thought about during the holidays and not much more.
After a family friend suggested Louisa advance her training as a make-up artist in the emerging industry of permanent make-up, she set out to explore the world of body art. Art on the human canvas quickly ignited her creative soul, which had been tempered by the loss of her father followed quickly by her mother's cancer diagnosis all in a short period of time.

Since 1986 Coalition for the Homeless has existed to be the voice for the homeless in the city of Louisville. They do this through education, advocacy, and coordination of resources. With over 30 member agencies, they help to strategically utilize each agency's strengths to work toward the elimination of homelessness in our city. In 2017 they began working to make the same impact on youth homelessness, one of the largest growing homeless populations in the country, through the program Rx: Housing Young Adults. As with each of the other Rx: Housing programs, they began with identifying homeless young adults living in Louisville by name and working with them to secure housing one by one.

From the antique cypress fermenters, rescued from the original Michter's Distillery in Pennsylvania, to the gorgeous tasting space, every detail is done with intention. I was overwhelmed with the care taken during every tour to be sure guests understand the WHY behind each choice made in the distillation process. All decisions are based on what is going to make the best product, even if it is not the most cost effective route. For example, they have the lowest barrel entry proof of any distiller of scale, which may not mean a lot to some, but anyone who knows whiskey knows this a costly process because you use more barrels and don't get as many bottles out of it. But, it makes a smooth product where the flavors shine in ways that wouldn't be possible if it had been watered down during bottling.

Hey there everybody, its Rose! I truly am a sucker for this time of year, because I love showing the people around me how much I truly love and appreciate them, and being able to spend quality time with them. The older I get, the harder it is to be able to get enough time in with all the people that make my world go around. I am thankful always, and try to never take for granted the people or the life I have been so graciously given. However, I think it is normal for everyone to sometimes get caught up in the routine of life, and bypass how special so many things and people are in our lives. Therefore, that is why this time of year really grounds me to truly remember what is most important in life, and to never take things for granted.
Her experience as an executive in the whiskey industry, along with her family lineage which traces back to some of the first families of bourbon, inspired Peggy to become the world's first female master bourbon taster.
So it began.
Lori Mangum sat down with Peggy Noe Stevens, a founding member of Bourbon Women, at her home to talk about the history of women in bourbon and, well, women in general.

She is also the marketing coordinator for a local marketing and PR company. But that's not why I wanted to talk to her.
Around Thanksgiving, I was browsing Facebook and came upon a post where she was thanking a small army for their help in producing a thanksgiving dinner for (what sounded like) another small army. And when I started reading more I saw what was at the center of everything. A non-profit called 'Kans For Kids" that she started. When she was 19.

Look around our city and there is so much growth and expansion, business is doing well, things are happening. It's all good, for the most part. But there is a subset of the population in any city that would be classified as homeless. They are without means, a place to live, and in many cases, depend on others for their survival. We often look upon this class of people as having made bad decisions as the cause for their situation, but in reality the problem is much more complicated. Mental illness, addiction, alcoholism and a string of 'bad luck' are the main causes for the vast majority of people in this category. And helping them can be just as challenging and non-linear as the path that led them there in the first place. An estimated 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Think about that statistic, and then think about the fragility of the financial house of cards that is built up on that foundation. A few bad weeks, an illness, whatever, could cause a great tragedy and could easily put a lot of people in dire straights. Couple that with the stigma of asking for help and it's a recipe for disaster.
But there is hope. There is always hope. And this group, FedWithFaith.org, led by Jean Manganaro, is doing their part to assist those who need help and are willing to accept it. I came across some posts on social media where some pretty well to-do people were using the hashtag #SelfMade and it made me think- there are no self-made people. It's not possible. You don't make a successful like on your own. There are countless people in your life that help you get to where you are. Always.

I ran into Turner Mayton in 2015 at a Flea Off Market when we first started our Yes Louisville apparel brand. He was looking to get our business. And in the end he did. I came across Buck Howard by way of Instagram. I kept seeing this out of place guy in videos of The Hat Girls store. When I learned what he did for a living I got excited- because I LOVE seeing how things are made and hearing how they make the machines that make stuff. It's so cool! Her shop, Revelry Boutique Gallery, is a showcase of great Louisville art and a place where people can make their creations available for purchase in a cool, comfortable and friendly environment. They have shows and events that highlight the artists and creators and put them on a stage. It didn't happen overnight- it took years of work and love and effort but the result is a landmark of our community. I'm thankful that we have people like Mo to help lead the way and expand the idea of what's possible.
