Pastor Brandon returns to start a brand new series called "Kardia", which is the greek word for heart. As this series is all about the very core of our beings. Our heart represents the innermost character, thoughts, and emotions of who we are. And our foundational concept to root our mindset during this series is that our heart is essential to life because it is the soil in which every decision in life grows. Which is an echo of Proverbs 4:23, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." One of the things we can pay attention to in the transformation of our hearts is that our mouths are an indicator and an activator for growth. And to cultivate a healthy heart, we need to speak our heart. You also need to remind yourself of God's faithfulness. Pastor Weston closes our 1-2-3 series in the book of 3 John, and how this letter from John is all about how our love is supposed to be an outpouring of the love that Christ demonstrated for us. Understanding our foundational concept has carried us through this series with the right understanding, that walking with Jesus means letting him lead. He needs to lead in all the areas of our lives and how we love others is one of those core places we need to let him lead us in. As we walk with Jesus, he leads us in showing love through generosity. Generosity is often associated with finances, but it also implicates our time and other resources as well! Embracing the Lord's conviction will lead to growth. And the truth is, that the Lord corrects us because He loves us, and wants us to live a life that is truly free, free from the bondage of sin. Because, a life fully devoted to Jesus looks different. It's one of the ways we are meant to impact the world and share the gospel! John also was us to rest assured that Jesus' sacrifice allows us to be sure of our salvation. Knowing that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, John also encourages us to keep away from idols. Jesus is the true and only way to the Father, and everything else fades away. Submitting to His guidance always helps us in loving each other well and growing into what He has called us to be. And we'll see today in 1 John 4, that love in grace and truth, is love that leads to change. We need the pairing of grace and truth to love each other well and to lead other in knowing God better and trusting Him more. Through John's letter we see that Jesus chose to love for us, John then tells us that love is a choice, not an emotion. That love is to be demonstrated just as Christ demonstrated it for us. This week we journey on into 1 John 3, remembering our foundational concept for this series: walking with Jesus means letting Him lead. Its a reminder to us that the goal is to be led by Him into what He has called us to do. As we walk with Him, John points out in this chapter that part of the way we need to be led is in how we love each other in this family of the Body of Christ. God wants us to be a part of His family, a loving family. The apostle John reminds us that we are called to support each other when the needs present themselves. Just as Christ laid down His life for us, we too are supposed to sacrifice and serve one another in actions and truth. Because love unknown is love unshown. We take a look at 1 John 2, today in our 1-2-3 series; where we study the later epistles of the apostle John and where we look at what they mean for the foundation of our Christian walk. Our core concept we want to remember is that walking with Jesus means letting Him lead. Part of knowing God better and trusting Him more is letting Him guide our lives. One of the biggest areas that we have to let God lead in is teaching and showing us what it is to love properly. As John moves on in this chapter, we see him draw the connection between loving God properly and have a fruitful, unifying life with other believers. The inverse of which shows that if you hate your brother or sister, then the love of the Father is not in you and you are still in darkness. See, a divided love divides your life. And those who sow division and darkness are called anti-Christs. we need to watch out for anti-Christs. Kicking off a brand new series where we are going through the later epistles of the apostle John. Even though we are starting in 1 John, our leading verse comes out of 3 John: 3 John 1:4 "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." And with it, we are establishing this thought throughout the series, that walking with Jesus means letting Jesus lead. What God has done in our lives helps others to see what God can do in theirs. As we look at the foundational concepts of what it means to walk with Jesus, we have to understand that as we walk and follow Jesus, we will look more like Jesus. Following Jesus means active participation, it means we are constantly growing and being shaped by God into more of an image of Jesus. When we think there is no need for us to change, we deceive ourselves. We wrap up our Filling Empty series today, remembering our foundational concept one more time: when feeling empty, know that God is the only one who truly fills us. Remembering that God is the one who truly fills helps us to have futures that are filled by Him. We can trust all of our days to the God of yesterday, today, and forever! Pastor Brandon enlightens us to see the couple of ways we often misuse "tomorrow", and the unnecessary pain that it causes. First, we often pull tomorrow's challenges into today, complicating today's challenges. Second, we push today's challenges into tomorrow, complicating tomorrow's challenges. As we celebrate Mother's Day in this series, we look at how often some of our first glimpses of grace happen in our homes because of our moms. Our foundational concept going through this series is a reminder; when feeling empty, we have to remember that God is the only One who truly fills us. God has always valued generational families, and His plans have always been generational. We can look the first encounter of Moses with God and we can see how, at the mention of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, Moses falls down on his face to revere the Lord. The truth is God's plans for godly parents are to help us in troubling times, and to point to who truly fills. Godly parents also help to guard the places that God has filled. As we continue through our series, we remember what the foundational concept of it is; that when we are feeling empty, we have to remember that God is the only one who truly fills us. He fills us with purposes and gift to serve according to His great purpose. We are designed to be an active part of His creation. For He created us and designed us; He knitted us together in our mother's womb and set us apart before we were born. We are created intentionally, He calls us masterpieces. We are both a work of art and an Artist's work. As God fills us, and we draw close to Him, He shows us where are gifts and talents can be used to honor Him and bring him glory. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" Matthew 6:22-23. Our eyes are a pathway to our hearts and the direction we walk in. Vision brings direction. We have to understand that our vision as humans will often lead to wanting the world's desires, which our fading, but pursuing God's vision leads to true life. Pursuing God's vision requires us to trust Him with our lives. This week we look at how a God-filled mind brings a God-filled life! We have to understand our foundational concept for this series, when we are feeling empty then we need to understand that God is the only one who can truly fill us. A God-filled mind begins with understanding that setting our minds on the truth is essential. Truth brings us freedom. And thinking on what is true sets us up to live lives that are truly free. The key to what defines truth is found in looking to Jesus. Jesus is the truth with flesh on. Everything he did was truth in action. "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" Knowing that God is the one that fills us when we feel empty is the core idea we have to hold onto as we continue into the second part of our "Filling Empty" series. So often our hearts can get to a place where they feel empty, feeling like they have been poured out or maybe just not poured into. The truth is that God wants to pour into you, but you first have to be open to Him and the truth He wants to pour in. He wants to fill us with more and more of Himself, but we have to open our hearts to Him. We are starting a new series today on Easter Sunday, "Filling Empty"! Centered around the idea that when we feel empty, God is the one who fills that empty. With a launching scripture of Matthew 5:6, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."Too often we make our own "get filled" plan that centers around us working harder or doing better to relieve that empty feeling inside. Thinking that way in human standards may be fine, but it is dangerous when we bring that same standard into our relationship with God. We can't do enough, work hard enough, or be good enough to earn salvation. We had incurred an infinite debt when we sinned against the infinite God. So, God's Son had to come down, and in the likeness of man, and pay the ultimate price. Dying on a cross for us, paying our debt, and had to be laid in a tomb, for us. God's gift of salvation is just that; a gift. It isn't earned or achieved, it is accepted. Three days later, Jesus rose! Defeating sin, death and the grave! The sound of the stone rolling away was the sound of Heaven opening up! We finish our Rebrand series today, looking into the life of Simon; more commonly known as Peter. Understanding that God wants us to have our identity in Him is a key foundational element to this series and to understanding the life of Simon Peter. Meeting Jesus will change you. From the first meeting Simon had with Jesus, Simon was changed; Jesus said that his name will be "Cephas (which, when translated, is Peter)". Then his name stayed Peter at the revelation that Jesus was the Son of God. We see that the truth that God reveals to you is the truth that will change you. Looking at the Life of Saul, and his miraculous conversion, we again see how God wants us to find our identity in Him. Through the life and writings of Paul we see that the calling on our lives is to do the will of God. Before Saul became Paul, he persecuted the early Church. He had orders to imprison early believers or stone them in order to prevent the spreading of the gospel. However, Jesus met him on the road to Damascus, and his life was turned around, and he started serving Jesus and making His name known. Through this we see that an encounter with Jesus will always bring about real change! Saul's name change to Paul was not only pivotal to his ministry, but also to the fulfillment of him being a new creation in Christ. Ultimately, your identity in Christ is what equips you for your calling. God wants us to find our identity in Him, and one of the most prominent things that we let name us instead is pain. Pain will try to change who you are but God's healing redeems your true identity. As in the case of today's story, Naomi. Naomi, from the book of Ruth, had determined to let her pain change her identity; she wanted to identify with it and make it the first thing people knew about her, by changing her own name to Mara. We can't let the existence of pain have the authority to rename us. In this series about name changes, one big change is when Jerusalem gets conquered by Babylon and selected hebrews are forced to learn Babylonian ways and language. Today we look at the story of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; whose names were changed to Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. We start with the ultimate truth that God wants us to find our identity in Him, and in the story of these hebrew men, it helps us to understand that not everybody who values what we can do, also values who we are. God is with us in the middle of our worst moments and will help us get through them; in the middle of temptations to make small, quiet compromises, and in the middle of large public temptations to go a different way than God's design. God will be with you. This week in our "Rebrand" series we take a look at the life of Gideon. We see in his story that to be who God says we are, we have to take God at His word and do what He says to do. In the life of Gideon, his haters named him Jerub-Baal, or "Let Baal content with him", because of how he tore down an altar to Baal. The truth is that your haters will try to do the same, and name you. This week we look at the life of a popular man in the Bible, whose actual name might be the least known about him. You can hear the name Barnabas and most people would know who is being referred to, but that isn't his actual name. In fact it is a nickname, given to him by other disciples early in Acts. Joseph, known as Barnabas, helps us to see that God wants our identity to be found in Him. Through the life of Barnabas we see that being who God created us to be will impact those around us. Barnabas, which means "son of encouragement", constantly went out of his way to encourage others. Barnabas acted in accordance with who God had made him to be. Continuing in our Rebrand series, we look at the name of Solomon and how David wanted his son to have the thing which he desperately wanted but couldn't get. God wants our identity to be in Him, and not in the pain of this life; which can easily try and give us our name. We have to embrace who God says we are. Solomon's life and name is marked by David's pain. Pain will try to name us, but God will reclaim us. God is bigger than our battles, and knowing that He has a bigger life for us in Christ gives us confidence that He also understands and guides us through the battles we face. In fact, while most of the world rejoices after a victory, we can rejoice because we have been promised the victory. Pastor Brandon guides us through a story in 2 Chronicles where King Jehoshaphat is having to prepare for a large war against several enemies and even though he wasn't fully prepared himself, he knew that he could go to God and rely on what He says. Our response to when God speaks, should be to worship; like King Jehoshaphat and his men. And our decisions should be based on God's promise. As we continue to look at the Bigger Picture of how God has a bigger life for us in Christ, this week we look at how our choices matter to the bigger picture. The bigger picture is lived by choosing God's way over our own way. Choose God's way, even in the "Ive done this a million times", or the "I've never done this before" issues of life; or even in the "this doesn't make any sense" issues of life. He has set before us the choice between life and death, blessings and curses, and urges us to choose life. His way leads to life and life abundant. We continue looking at how God has a bigger life for us in Christ. This week Pastor Brandon shows us that our big life is in the little things God entrusts us with. In Matthew 25 we find the Parable of the Talents, in which a master entrusts his wealth to his servants. We begin a new series this week, looking at how God's plans are bigger than you, but they include you. This week, we study how the enemy tries to lie and convince us that there is not a bigger plan and that Jesus has not come to give us life and life abundantly. Pastor Brandon shows us, through the scriptures, that the enemy's lies are the same ones he has always used; the big lies of, "You have to take care of yourself first", "If God has you, then you can be reckless and irresponsible", and "Serving God means missing out on everything." As we wrap up our "Essentials" series, we tackle a subject that tends to be tough for many to hear. How generosity is essential to our growth as Christians. The truth is that living a generous life helps us to know God better and trust Him more. God was generous with us and gave His Son as a gift, so, we should be inspired to be generous as well. Inviting God into your finances helps us to see where we are at and how to take our next step forward from there. Forsaking the "consumption assumption", we prepare our hearts to always ask where our resources need to go, each time they touch our hands. And a heart of generosity helps us to love God and love others. This week we take a look at the classic story of King Saul, the king appointed by the demand of the Israelite people. For years the Lord had been their one and only king, however, the Israelites saw that the other nations all had kings and so they demanded one as well. The Lord knew where it would lead but appointed a king anyway. In part 6 of our "Miracles Vol. 1" series we look at the miracle of the paralyzed man who was lowered through the roof. Through the perseverance of his friends and him, they decided to dig through the roof of the home Jesus was preaching in, lowering him into the building and at Jesus' feet. Seeing their faith, Jesus forgave his sins, then healed his paralysis. As we go through the intricate details of this story, Pastor Brandon teaches us that we need people around us that will push us towards Jesus, even when its difficult. This week, we look at the miracle of Jesus walking on water. When the disciples were instructed to go to the other side of the sea of Galilee, they set off. Yet as they were traveling and were far off from the land, they were experiencing difficulty because they were against the wind and waves. During this difficulty, Jesus made His way out to them. Through this miracle, Pastor Brandon points out how there can be times when we are where God wants us to be yet still face difficulty. Through this miracle we can learn that even if there is difficulty or trials, when we respond to what Jesus tells us to do, amazing things happen. This week in our "Miracles Vol.1" series we dive into the life of Jonah, and into the miracles that happen in his life. Most of us are familiar with the story of Jonah, but do we see the true miracle that is often overlooked by the miracle of the Big Fish? Pastor Brandon teaches us through Jonah's story that running from God never makes things any better; Jonah ran away from God but learned quickly that there is nowhere we can go that is away from Him. Then, after being swallowed by the Big Fish, Jonah teaches us by example that even in our lowest moments we can cry out to God and be heard. God can get us where He wants us to go, even if we take a detour along the way. But the biggest miracle Pastor Brandon shows us from the scriptures is that God still had mercy and compassion for the Ninevites after they repented! We dive into the Story of Naaman this week in our "Miracles Vol. 1" series! A soldier who struggled with leprosy secretly. But when a little girl said that he could be healed by a prophet in Samaria, he went off to get healed. When he found the house of the prophet after speaking with the king of Israel, he expected the miracle to take place how he wanted it to; with a grand gesture, and unction of heaved and a wave of the hand. But he was told to bathe in the Jordan seven times. After going off in a rage because the miracle wasn't going to happen how he wanted, and being convinced by a servant of his, he finally did as the Prophet had instructed. And Naaman was healed to a state better than anticipated. We start by looking at the miracle of manna, the provision provided by the Lord that the Israelites had in the wilderness before the promised land. With this miracle, we learn that God's miracles happen every day! God provided manna for the Israelites every day, except for the Sabbath, for forty years! While it is easy to lose sight of the everyday miracles that God performs, the story of manna reminds us that today's blessing are supposed to be enjoyed today, regardless of how big or small they may be.
