A verse-by-verse Psalm 46 study exploring “be still,” and why we can let go and trust God. What does it mean to “be still” when nothing around you is still? Psalm 46 speaks into a world of roaring waters, shaking mountains, raging nations, and uncertain outcomes—and calls us to behold the works of the LORD. True rest grows as we see who God is, remember what He has done, and entrust what we are holding to His faithful hands.

In this fifth and final message from the CHILL: Rethinking Rest & Stress series, Jennifer Richmond walks verse by verse through Psalm 46, exploring its vivid imagery, repeated Hebrew words, and powerful refrain: “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” Rather than treating “Be still and know that I am God” as a peaceful slogan, this study restores the verse to its setting and reveals God’s command to cease striving, release our resistance, and acknowledge His sovereign rule.

Whether you’re studying Psalm 46 on your own, leading a small group, preparing to teach, or struggling to release fear, control, resentment, or an uncertain outcome, this study will help you behold the character and works of God—and understand why you can safely open your hands before Him.

In this Bible study you’ll discover:
• Why Psalm 46 begins with God before describing the trouble
• How the repeated Hebrew root mot contrasts moving mountains, tottering kingdoms, and the city that will not be moved
• Why “she shall not be moved” refers to Zion, not an individual woman
• What the name YHWH Tseva’ot—the LORD of hosts—reveals about God’s power and covenant presence
• The meaning of harpu—“be still,” “cease,” “release,” or “let go”
• How “Come and see” leads from Psalm 46 to Jesus and the empty tomb
• Why we can rest while God remains active, sovereign, and faithful
• How the entire CHILL study leads us to come, hide, know the I AM, let go, and let God be God

This Message: Paul’s joy isn’t shaken by prison walls. His life, prayer, and example call us to live worthy of the gospel, standing firm together in Christ. Paul’s writing from prison and yet he’s full of steady, grateful joy. This talk walks Philippians 1 with you: calling you a slave‑saint, naming the liminal ‘in‑between’ places, and showing how faith is refined there.

Take four simple anchors—posture, perspective, purpose, perseverance—to face soggy towels, broken washers, or bigger storms with courage. Trust that the God who began a good work in you will finish it; lean into prayer, the Spirit, and your church family.

This Study: "Philippians: Joyful & Steady" is a 6-session study verse-by-verse through this impactful epistle. Sessions 1 & 2 will give you the basics of studying the Bible and the overview of Philippians. Sessions 3-6 will cover one chapter at a time. Theology isn’t abstract—it’s lived. Your life is your testimony. The way you respond to trials, the way you show joy, the way you carry burdens—all of it proclaims who you believe God is. This message equips you to let your theology and your testimony walk hand in hand.

I'm inviting you on a discipleship journey into a life that is Christ-centered and gospel-fueled: “I want to be everything about the gospel. “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain… that’s not just Paul’s story. It’s ours, too.” My heart is for you to be good Bible students not for the sake of knowledge alone, but to know Christ deeply and walk in gospel steadiness. In this message I introduce theological concepts like hermeneutics, systematic theology, and biblical theology to equip you to rightly handle God’s Word. Listen with the prayer to become confident, Spirit-led students of Scripture who can study and apply the Word on your own. You'll learn the DWELL method (Discover, Wonder, Examine, Link, Live) for a memorable and accessible structure for studying the Bible deeply training you to be trainers.

This episode digs into a tough but real question: does God fight for us when we feel attacked or misrepresented? We walk through Scripture to understand God’s character, how to check our hearts, and why godly friendships and humility matter more than instant vindication. I share practical steps, key verses to meditate on, and encouragement to trust God’s timing while pursuing holiness. Let’s think it through together, pray, and keep seeking to live with the word of Christ dwelling in us richly.

This week’s message from Hebrews 10:32–39 carries a deeply personal note. Before the sermon, we sang “Walk by Calvary”—a song written by my dad, Dave Garrett. He wasn’t just a pastor; he was a songwriter who lived out Colossians 3:16, letting the Word of Christ dwell richly through hymns and spiritual songs. For me, his words are a heritage of faith, pointing me (and now all of us) back to the cross. He was about centering everything on Christ. I can’t think of a better way to step into Hebrews’ call to remember and endure than by remembering the faithfulness of God through the song of a man who lived it. This sermon is from the "Greater Than" series through Hebrews at La Mirada Christian Church. Listen to the complete series ‪@LaMiradaChurchChannel‬

What if the scariest words in Hebrews are actually an act of mercy? “If we go on sinning deliberately…” (Hebrews 10:26–31) can sound like doom, but this passage is a loving shout of “Stop!” to hearts drifting toward an eyes-wide-open rejection of Jesus. In this message, we unpack what “sinning deliberately” really means (and what it doesn’t), why phrases like “trampled the Son of God” and “outraged the Spirit of grace” are so strong, and how this warning comforts the worried, confronts the casual, and equips the faithful. You’ll see the difference between a weak struggler who stumbles yet repents and a willful heart that treats the cross as common. You’ll also hear why this is not about losing salvation, but about refusing the only sacrifice that saves and why the “hands of the living God” are fierce with justice and fierce with grace. Come be sobered, steadied, and invited back to Jesus, His people, and a holy, hopeful life.

What if life's biggest need isn't a quick fix? It’s easy to get caught up in wanting things now. But what if the deepest longing is for something more? What if it is a sense of peace that comes from within? Feeling like you're never enough? Like no matter how hard you try, you just can’t outrun guilt or find peace with God? In this message from Hebrews 10, we explore why all the sacrifices in the world - not bulls, goats, rituals, or even good deeds - could never do what Jesus did. This isn’t just theology; it’s the answer to your deepest need: to be fully justified, fully clean, and fully free.

Let’s talk about shadows, sacrifices, and the Savior who stretched out His arms to cover it all.

Ever feel like you’re standing on the edge of something God promised but hesitating to step forward? You’re not alone. In Joshua 10-14, we see battles won, prayers so bold they stopped the sun, and an unlikely group—the Gibeonites—who secured a covenant with God by accident.

💭 Key Quote: “The battle has already been won. The question isn’t if God is faithful. The question is, will we have the courage to claim what He has given?”

From Joshua’s sun-stand-still prayer to Caleb’s “Give me this mountain” faith, this message will challenge you to:

✅ Pray bold, audacious prayers

✅ Step into victory like it’s already yours (because it is!)

✅ Stop waiting for “good enough” and claim what God has promised

And yes—there’s even a Spongebob reference. Because biblical truth is best served with a side of humor. 😆

This is Episode #3 from Dwelling Richly "Joshua: Strong & Courageous"

The Dwelling Richly podcast on your favorite platforms: Spotify, Apple, YouTube, etc

You'll enjoy this blog post: "Faith for the Forgetful"

Episode Details..."We all forget things—where we put our keys, why we walked into a room, or even that one important anniversary (not saying who, but you know who you are!). But here’s the good news—God already knows we’re forgetful, and He’s built reminders into His Word to anchor us in truth. That’s why He tells His people, over and over again: Don’t forget to remember!"

In today’s episode, we’re diving into Joshua 1:1-5:1, where we see God setting up His people for success—not worldly success, but the kind rooted in trust and obedience. We’ll unpack how right theology shapes our courage, why obedience isn’t just personal but communal, and what Rahab’s faith can teach us about stepping out in trust before we see results. And we’ll ask the big question: Are we setting up spiritual reminders in our own lives to remember God’s faithfulness?

💡 Key Thought: "Courage isn’t about self-confidence; it’s about God-confidence. So if you struggle with self-confidence—good news! You’re already halfway there."

So grab your Bible, take a deep breath, and let’s remember together. God is faithful, and He’s leading us forward. Are we paying attention?

📖 Key Scriptures: Joshua 1:9 – “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” * Joshua 4:6-7 – “What do these stones mean to you?” * Hebrews 4:8 – “If Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.”*

"We love the Jesus of the manger because He’s cute and cuddly. That’s why Christmas is so popular. But Easter? That’s messy—there’s blood, a cross, and a spiritual battle. It’s not as easy to celebrate." In this session we'll move in on how to read the Bible - Joshua, in particular - faithfully.Uncover the depth and richness of the book of Joshua as we explore God’s sovereignty, holiness, and faithfulness in leading His people. This message helps us approach Joshua not just as a historical narrative, but as a theological account that points us to God’s ultimate plan in Christ. Along the way, we’ll address difficult questions and learn how to trust God, even in the challenging parts of Scripture.

"The Bible was written for us, but it wasn’t originally written to us. You don’t open the Bible and see, ‘Dear Jennifer.’ There was an original audience, and we must read it with that in mind."📖 Key Scriptures:

Heirs of the Gospel - Children of Promise....this phrase is packed with meaning, hinting at our identity as heirs to God's promises. We explore why the law was given (hint: it’s not to save us) and how it points out our need for a Savior. We learn that faith in Christ transforms us from being bound by the law to becoming full-fledged heirs. Paul brilliantly explains that in Christ, there’s no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female. We’re all one, wearing Christ as our identity.

See the beauty of adoption as sons (yes, sons—because it signifies being an heir). This isn’t about exclusion but elevation, showing how everyone is brought to the highest privilege in God’s family. Are we living as true heirs, embracing grace over legalism, and inviting others into this incredible promise? So grab your Bible, open your heart, and let’s embrace the freedom and intimacy we have as children of promise. You won’t want to miss this enlightening study that ties it all together with God’s amazing grace!

🙌 I meet with women like you for pastoral care. If you need a safe and encouraging place to share your heart, be prayed for, and pointed to the life-giving truth in God's Word, please reach out. Every relationship and even our self-talk should be filtered through the lens of the gospel. Because, let's be real, life throws a lot at us, and staying grounded in the gospel is key. I even share a personal story about a recent challenge with my husband that taught me the importance of forgiveness and letting go of bitterness. Spoiler: It all comes back to the gospel!

Join me as we unpack the importance of keeping in step with the gospel, just like Paul did when he called out Peter for his public misstep. We'll also touch on the five solas of scripture and how they can help us stay focused on the truth. So grab a cozy spot, maybe a cup of coffee, and let's grow together in understanding the radical transformation the gospel brings. 🙌

The gospel is not just about tweaking a few behaviors but completely transforming us from the inside out? We're diving deep into the book of Galatians and exploring how the gospel is designed to reverse us, not the other way around.

We often think we can figure things out on our own, right? Whether it's trying to do better politically, culturally, or spiritually, each generation believes it can finally get it right. But history tells us a different story. As we unpack the message of Galatians, we'll see how each attempt to create systems promising freedom often ends up leading to more control and bondage. And guess what? It's the same with our spiritual lives.

Join me as we explore Paul's powerful words and his own transformation by the gospel. His life, once dedicated to persecuting the church, became a testament to God's grace and power, glorifying God through his radical change. Let's challenge ourselves to not rationalize our positions but to truly embrace the gospel's call to become new creations in Christ.

So, grab your Bible, maybe a cup of coffee, and let's dive into the transformative power of the gospel. Are you ready to let the gospel reverse you? 🌿

Galatians: Free & Filled is a verse-by-verse Bible study through one of the most fired up - maybe the most! - epistle of Paul's! He comes in to right the "ship" to bring the churches in Galatia back on course with the truth. They needed this strong correction then and we need it today!

In Galatians we will be called to check for any legalism and live to uncover the pure, unfiltered gospel of grace. We'll laugh, we'll learn, and we might just get a little fiery as we explore Paul's passionate plea to the early church.

In this episode, we tackle the sufficiency of the gospel, the dangers of adding to God's word, and the incredible freedom we have in Christ. Whether you're new to the faith or a seasoned believer, this study promises to challenge and inspire you to live freely and fully in God's grace.

Psalm 119:25-32 || Ep. 2 ABCs of Grace - DALET דFocus: We're continuing a special series where I share my dad's teachings from Psalm 119, recorded way back in 1981. In this episode, my dad, Pastor Dave, guides us through verses 25-32, focusing on finding hope and strength in times of depression. He called this section "Orienting to Depression," emphasizing the Hebrew letter Dalet that begins each verse. His insights are timeless and so relevant, especially if you're struggling or supporting someone who is.

Reminder:These recordings are from old cassettes, so expect a little static and garble. But trust me, it's worth it. Grab your Bible, follow along, and don't forget to check out the study guides and transcripts on my blog, for a clearer understanding.

Key Points:* Memorize Psalm 119:25-32 to internalize God's promises. * Reflect on areas of your life where you feel defeated and ask God to revive you according to His Word. * Share this message with someone struggling with depression or loneliness. * Study the verses mentioned in the podcast to deepen your understanding. * Engage in daily meditation on God’s Word to combat negative thoughts.

Growing Deeper... Daily Scripture Reading Plan: Create a plan to read a portion of Psalm 119 each day, focusing on one stanza (eight verses) at a time. As you read, reflect on the meaning of the Hebrew letters and how they relate to your life. Write down your thoughts and any specific ways you feel God is speaking to you. * Journaling with Expectation: Begin a journal where you write down your prayers and expectations as you study the Bible. Reflect on how God has acted in your life in the past and how you expect Him to work in the future. Periodically review your entries to see how God has answered and guided you through His Word. * Memorization and Meditation: Choose a verse from Psalm 119 that resonates with you and commit it to memory. Throughout the day, meditate on that verse, considering how it applies to your current situation and how you can live it out. Use it as a reminder to keep your eyes fixed on God’s promises. * Group Bible Study: Gather a small group of friends or family members and go through Psalm 119 together, one stanza at a time. Discuss the meaning of each passage, how it challenges or encourages you, and how you can apply it to your lives. Encourage one another to dwell richly in God’s Word throughout the week. * Personal Prayer Time: Set aside dedicated time each day to pray through the principles learned in this podcast. Focus on confessing your sins, asking God for understanding, and approaching Him with boldness and expectation. Use Psalm 119:121-128 as a guide for your prayers, asking God to help you see and understand His will.*

In this message based on John 13:1-21, we reflect on the moment when Jesus, knowing His hour had come, chose to show His disciples the ultimate example of love and humility by washing their feet. This sermon highlights the significance of Jesus' actions, the meaning of true servant leadership, and our call to serve others with the same sacrificial love. As we go through this passage, we're reminded that God's timing is perfect, and His love for us is limitless. Join us as we consider what it means to love 'to the uttermost' and how we can follow Jesus' example in our own lives.

🌟 We're diving into the 14th section of Psalm 119, focusing on the Hebrew letter "nun." We'll explore how God's word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, helping us navigate life's challenges with wisdom and grace. We'll talk about the importance of taking God's word seriously, swearing an oath to keep His righteous rules, and how this commitment can transform our lives. Plus, I'll share a little about my own experiences and some cool insights into the Hebrew alphabet.

Do you take it seriously? How would you answer these questions:

  1. I read and meditate on God's Word daily.
  2. I take my Bible - an actual physical Bible - to church and Bible study.
  3. I Memorize the Word
  4. I have taken an oath to keep God's rules

Welcome to the first episode in the new series: "So Glad You Asked"

In this series, I plan to dive into those tricky Bible passages and life dilemmas that make you scratch your head and wonder, "What does this really mean?"

Ever been curious about what happens after we die? You’re not alone! Today, we’re tackling a fascinating question about the apparent contradiction between 1 Thessalonians 4 and 2 Corinthians 5. Do the dead in Christ rise first, or are they already present with the Lord?

Grab your Bible, and let's get into it.

This episode and the SGYA series is that it will benefit anyone eager to deepen their understanding of Scripture, especially those who wrestle with challenging or seemingly contradictory Bible passages. I intend for it to support believers committed to thinking biblically and engaging more thoughtfully with God’s Word. I also hope it serves as a valuable resource for small group leaders, Bible study participants, and anyone seeking clarity on complex doctrinal issues. Be sure to subscribe the the Dwelling Richly podcast and follow the blog.

Special Message: "How to Enjoy the Bible" is a recording from a Sunday School class my dad, Dave Garrett, taught at First Baptist Church of Newbury Park in 1981. This is part 4 in his series - I only have this one message from the series.

I found several recordings of messages and recovered them from the original cassettes to digital files in 2024 - interestingly, I was in the middle of teaching a series called "How to Study the Bible" when I recovered his messages! I wish I had all of his messages, but unfortunately, I only have a dozen. I will continue to recover and make his messages available and share them here on my podcast as a special series as well as on my website where you'll also be able to read the transcripts and get other resources. I know you'll be blessed by his teaching because he was faithful to "rightly divide the Word of Truth" and I know you'll enjoy his humor and thoughtfulness as well.

This message explores how to enjoy the Bible by studying it inductively, rightly dividing the word of truth, and understanding its context. He emphasizes avoiding legalism and correctly interpreting scripture based on literary form, subject matter, times, and dispensations. A perfect word for us today as it was in 1981!

It's important to know this: the greatest heritage we can leave our children is a love for and faith in God. My parents both did that. As I've listened to his messages I am reminded just how profoundly he influenced my own teaching to this day. The very fact that the focus of my blog is "Dwelling Richly" is directly because of the love my parents both had for God's Word and the way the passed along that love to me and my sisters.

So, this is a super special episode of the Dwelling Richly podcast. I've been teasing you with hints about a surprise, and today, I'm finally spilling the beans.

My dad was a pastor, and growing up as a pastor's kid gave me some amazing memories. Fast forward to 2024, both my parents have passed, and I found myself going through old boxes in the garage. Imagine my shock when I discovered a box of my dad's old cassette tapes, recordings of his teachings from the early '80s!

Despite some rat damage (gross, I know!), the tapes were miraculously intact. Hearing my dad's voice again was beyond emotional. And get this—one series is called "How to Enjoy the Bible," perfectly aligning with my current podcast series!

I'm working on digitizing these treasures so I can share them with you all. Stay tuned for these raw, heartfelt recordings. Thanks for being part of this journey with me. Can't wait to share more soon! Today, we're diving deeper into our series on "How to Study the Bible." It's not just about the "how," but also the "why," "when," and even "how not" to study the Bible. Did you know that this Psalm is the longest chapter in the Bible and is divided into 22 sections, each corresponding to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet?

We'll focus on the 10th letter, Yod, the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet, and see how it plays a big role in this segment. It's all about the contrast between God's greatness and our smallness, beautifully illustrated through the verses.

In the episode I mentioned a little surprise coming at the end, but I decided to create a special episode about that...so look for that episode coming soon!

Word Study in a Concordance: Look up "chesed" in a Hebrew concordance to see all the instances it appears in the Bible and how it's translated in different contexts.

Bible Dictionary: Use a Bible dictionary to explore the definition and nuances of "chesed." This can provide historical and cultural background to enrich your understanding.

Compare Translations: Read passages that include "chesed" in multiple Bible translations (e.g., NIV, ESV, KJV) to see how different translators interpret the word.

Read Commentaries: Dive into biblical commentaries on key verses like Psalm 136 or Psalm 63:3. Scholars often provide deep insights into the meaning and application of "chesed."

Meditate on Key Verses: Choose a few key verses that feature "chesed" (e.g., Psalm 136:1, Lamentations 3:22-23) and meditate on them, reflecting on how God's loving-kindness is evident in your life.

Journal Your Findings: Keep a journal of your discoveries about "chesed," noting how this attribute of God impacts your faith and daily life.

Create Art or Music: Express your understanding of "chesed" through creative means like drawing, painting, or composing music, as a way to internalize and reflect on God's loving-kindness.

Today's passage is super relatable. Ever felt frustrated by those who reject God's truth? You're not alone. In Psalm 119, the author (possibly David or Ezra) shares that exact feeling. Despite the mockery of the insolent, he finds comfort and hope in God's promises. In this passage we can learn better how to study the Bible and see how God's Word equips us to handle life's challenges. Remember, let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly. Share your thoughts on the website, and know that you're loved and prayed for. Can't wait to connect again soon!

This summer series has been all about how to study the Bible, but today we’re not just talking about the "how"—we're delving into the "why". Why do we study God's Word? What does it do for us? As I read through Psalm 119, I was overwhelmed by how God's Word equips us, especially in our weakest moments.

If you've ever felt self-doubt, lack of confidence, or anxiety about sharing your faith, you are not alone. I feel the same way sometimes. But this passage reminds us that God’s steadfast love and promises are our strength. We can be bold and brave in our faith because of His Word.

We’ll explore how trusting in His Word empowers us to face any challenge, whether it's a taunt from an adversary or a moment of self-doubt.

Hey there! Remember last episode when we dove into Psalm 119 and talked about how our relationship with God influences our prayer life and Bible study? Well, today we're picking up right where we left off. We’re diving into Psalm 119:33-40 and focusing on getting our priorities on track.

It's so easy to get distracted, isn't it? But immersing ourselves in God's Word can help us realign our priorities. I’m grateful for the community in Christ that keeps me focused. Let’s open our Bibles to Psalm 119 and get started.

We’ll be exploring how David’s requests to God can guide us in our own lives. David asked for understanding, guidance, and a heart inclined to God’s testimonies. It’s all about delighting in God’s path and turning away from worthless things.

Tuesday, June 11, 2024Ep. 915 Using or Loving God pt 21 John 4:7-21 “Love is love.” Is it though? Is that what God’s word says? It’s June and in the U.S. that means “pride month” where the “Love is love” mantra is celebrated and pressed upon us and while it might seem and feel a simple enough idea, for those of us who want to honor and love God’s Word and not use it to fit our personal ideas we should be careful not to just accept a motto without weighing it against God’s holy Word. Monday, May 20, 2024Ep. 910 Bone Broth and Bible Study 1 John 2:25-29If you've ever made bone broth then you know the importance of having a good filter - a colander, seive, or cheese cloth. The same applies when we read the Bible. Shouldn't we read the Bible with no filter? Actually, no. We all read the Bible through a filter - several filters actually. The filter of our upbringing, our current situation, even our mood at that moment. Be aware of your filters. You can’t remove them - but you can be aware so that when you read the Word you can ask - How is God using His holy Word in my life to teach me, encourage me, convict me, and change me today? Am I loving His Words or am I using them to get something I want? Here's a simple way to approach my time in the Word, even my moments listening to a sermon or Bible study teaching.

What happens when you're reading the Bible and you come across a word or an idea that is new to you, confusing to you, or you just don't understand? Today we're going to talk about a simple way to approach God's Word, to grow in your ability to understand, and also help you trust God in the process. 4 tips you'll be really thankful to have...and super simple too!

2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

Numbers 1-19 || In the Wilderness

Lesson 9 Review

“Numbers” gets its name from the three times God calls for a census, but a better title is “In the Wilderness” because that’s where the entire account takes place. This is actually the title in the Hebrew Bible taken from the first verse: “The LORD spoke to Moses bamidbar – in the wilderness...”

The long awaited promise of a land of their own is just a few days’ journey away, but, as we’ll see in the wilderness, God’s people have a long way to go before they will be able to come into the Land.

We will see our own selves in these chapters – living in the wilderness, trusting God, waiting, failing, trusting again.

Like Israel, we too are rough and rebellious, “prone to wander” as the hymn sings. We will see what Paul wrote that we are not to set our hearts on evil things...be sexually immoral...put God to the test...or gripe and complain...(1 Cor. 10:6-10.)

(The audio clears up around 7 minutes in.)

There's nothing "usual' about the story of Christmas. Through each chapter in this "Christmas Story" series we've seen the miraculous, the hopeful, the reminders that God's purpose is not only bigger than we could have expected, but it's also more unusual too. Instead of settling in with our expectations, the Christmas story calls us to expect greater things from God, and today's message will remind us that He is not just the reason for this season but for every season.

Hidden in Esther are echoes of God's mercy. God appears to be hidden in this account - no mention of His name, no talk of the temple, prophets, or even prayers - and yet throughout the pages, if we listen, are echoes of God's mercy. Begin this message and continue with part 2.

Download this Bible study at JenniferGRichmond.com and create your Vision/Mission/Strategy statement based on the Bible.

This particular lesson is from the "Corinthians: Love & Light" community Bible study - Lesson 4, Day 10 What is a Vision/Mission/Strategy statement? Corporations have them. Small businesses, non-profits, schools, and even churches have them too – a vision and mission statement. Organizations create vision and mission statements to clarify their purpose for existing, to keep their purpose focused, and to communicate to the world why they do what they do.

Then they add a strategy that supports where they’re going and how they’ve defined why they exist. Stating a vision and mission and laying out a strategy is a powerful way to clarify your focus, You don’t have to be a corporation to have one. With a vision and mission strategy plan you can keep yourself from overcommitment and stay involved with what is most helpful and most importantly: in line with your calling in Christ. Many people move through life by getting up, taking care of the day’s tasks, dealing with issues and basic needs, planning a vacation or a play date here and there, heading to bed, and doing that over and over again.

Having a vision with a mission and a strategy will tighten up your life’s focus, help you to keep things on track with what you’ve been called to be and do and give you the specifics to help you stay focused on what’s most important in life as a Christian.

The Dwelling Richly Bible study is for women who love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength. We are women who enthusiastically and intentionally dwell in the Word and let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly.

The Feeding of the 5000 is the only miracle besides the Resurrection that every gospel writer included. It's so important that Jesus referred back to this moment multiple times as He taught His disciples. Getting the point of this miracle is then should be a priority for each of us. 5000 men, 12 disciples, 1 boy's lunch - how does this add up to the greatest miracle Jesus ever performed? What's the point? Generosity? Faith? Serving others? Letting God use you?

Read this account in Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-52, Luke 9:10-17, and John 6:1-13, and don't miss this point.

Mark 4:1-20 - The Parable of the Soils Remember that science project you did in grade school? Maybe you helped your child do one recently? If you remember one things - besides the challenge of getting that project done! - you remember the importance of "variables." In an experiment testing the impact of music on mice, my son tested 3 pairs of mice. He kept all things as equal as possible and only changed one thing - that variable was music. Some had no music, some had only hard rock, and the other two had Mozart. Variables make a difference. Our hearts are the key variable in today's message - the sower is the same. The seed- also the same - it's the heart that matters. Today's message will challenge you to consider the state of your heart and encourage you to let God work in it so you can hear and see and receive His blessing and power in your life.

As difficult as that is…as scary as it is to feel so deeply such questioning…as much as we are filled with fear and longing for hope…we are not abandoned. We are not without hope. We are not alone or without resources to respond. We cannot be passive. We cannot just let time pass. Here are seven prayers, and each one of these can be daily actions as well.

I know it can feel like a long time as you wait and pray and continue to pray for God to answer - but how long is too long? Do have a threshold on the time you feel is long enough to wait? Does your attitude change? Your faith? Your patience? We'll consider this passage in Genesis and how God moves in and through the lives and situations here and ask the question, "How long is too long?" as we seek to keep growing stronger in our own faith.

[excerpt] "...and while salvation did come for those people gathered, shouting, and hopeful – only a few days later that very fickle crowd turned their hosannas to crucify Him.  Led by their emotions rather than the truth – they knew the prophecies, they had seen his miracles, they had a true reason to believe – rather than trusting they shifted and went with the momentary solidarity with the louder voices, the stronger presence, what appeared to be the mightier leaders – and aren’t we tempted to be the same?

Most of us are familiar with the stories of Cain and Abel and Noah and the Ark and we know the stories from our Sunday School years and the simple "here's what this means moral at the end of the story. "Don't be like Cain. Be like Abel" or "Have faith like Noah." But is that all? Are we missing the bigger idea when we are satisfied with "the moral of the story?" Stay through to the end for Question & Response time...

1) Where did Cain get his wife?

2) Where were the "sons of God"...the "Nephilim?"

3) What does it mean that Ham "saw his father's nakedness?"

Read and engage through Genesis 2:8-17 || Lesson 3/Day4

There is no more significant verse in the Bible than the first four: “In the beginning God...” From there all else is defined and all questions have their answers: Who am I? What is my purpose in life? How can know what is right? wrong? true? Genesis is the beginnings of everything – including the greatest thing: God’s great love for His creation – you.

Genesis begins, as John Milton so famously described, with Paradise Lost. It opens in chaos and a garden is brought into order. From there Eden, relationships, peace, wholeness are lost. Genesis is the account of that loss but more so of “the found” – How God reached and made a way for what was lost to be found.

Lesson 1/Day 6 of the Genesis: Lost & Found Bible study. Read and engage through Genesis chapters 27-31

God woos us, draws us, desires us, delights in us...sometimes that wooing is tender and sweet like a soft song enveloping our hearts...other times, and for me in this season, that song isn't so sweet - it's more like the rowdy, pounding beats of a heavy metal jam screaming for attention - God woos softly when we need that tender touch, but he woo-hoos us and even Hey, YOU-s!! us when we need a jolt of truth. This is my story of finding true satisfaction in God and how finding satisfaction in Him first and God fully changed everything. It’s not that I had left Jesus – It’s that I was treating him like a social media friend following Him for what I could find interesting and motivational instead of surrendering every corner of my heart, mind, and soul to Him and finding ultimate satisfaction in Him first and Him fully. "Restored: Found, Saved, Loved by God" -Where do you go when the platitudes are meaningless, your heart is empty, your hope is gone? This is my story...so far. It's a story of Dittos, Christmas ornaments, broken vows, and healing. When you ask, "Why me?" or "I just want this to be over"... Whether the season you're in right now is refreshing and simple or hard and complicated, you have a God who sees - and more than that - seeks and finds and loves you. When should Christians "cancel" others? What is God's plan for Israel? What kind of worship should we be listening to? A lot of concepts to dig into as we dwell in Romans chapter 11. This lesson is part of the Dwelling Richly Bible study - where women connect for hope, truth, and teaching verse-by-verse through the Bible.

Three basic cries of every toddler are "No!", "Mine!" and "That's not fair!" and each one of these sticks with us even when we grow up. The hopeful answer to each is actually found in the gospel, because we wouldn't cry out like this if the answers weren't available of "Yes!" or "Ours!" or "Thank God he's more than fair." God's mercy is greater and we can see that in how He is patient with Israel.

Message covering Romans 5:6-6:26 plus QA

Have you ever considered how great it is that it's God's kindness - not wrath, threats, disgust, etc. - that leads us to repentance? What we learned from Romans 1:1-2:11 was that God is good, we are not, that's a big problem and there's a solution! In this episode, I'll cover some tough questions we all have had and address some issues we may have struggled with... Why is homosexuality a sin? What about people who are truly good? Why do I continue to deal with low self-esteem? Listen and be challenged...and be encouraged!

Why is there so much pain and evil in this world? From petty annoyances to crushing burdens. Why doesn't God do something about it?

Probably one of the greatest challenges facing each person, even Christians, is the reality of evil and suffering. Maybe you’ve gone to God in times of desperate hurt and deep loss only to feel that your prayers have not been heard.

These are important questions and while we cannot solve them all neatly in one short message, we can address evil and suffering and point to the answers found in God’s Word.

No pat answers...no, “just have faith” responses.

Do you doubt? Get stressed? Hurry God? Just me? Ok... of course we do...we all do. We doubt and we settle and we lose sight of the reality that our God is not just some distant disinterested lower case “g” god...our God, the God we sing to and about, the God we pray to and read about, that God is our God and he’s the creator of the universe.

When Ruth and Naomi returned to Bethlehem, I’m sure their plan was to survive. They just wanted to get what they could get from the edges of the harvest fields and hope for the best. But God had other plans. It may be the same for you today as well. Survive. You may find yourself in a dire situation at work, in your family, with relationships, even in your marriage...and making it work is the best you can hope for. Do right. Keep your head down. Just get through this. But God has other plans. I promise you. There is nothing in God’s Word that should ever leave us thinking that surviving is his will. God has blessing, abundance, grace, mercy, and more ready for us. Why should we doubt this for our situation today?

Why are you cast down, O my soul,     and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,     my salvation 6 and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;     therefore I remember you (Psalm 42)

Take a deep breath and be encouraged, strengthed, re-centered...listen to this message and rethink fear and worry from the life of Nehemiah - the truth of God's Word. Learn the secret to a life truly centered and strengthed in lasting peace of mind and bold confidence no matter what your circumstances.

From Nehemiah 5:1-6:19

"Who is the least creative, least remarkable, least inventive person you can think of...I’ll save you some time...Satan. Satan is.

Solomon wrote, “there is nothing new under the sun” in response to his ponderings about the repetitive and seemingly meaninglessness of life – because aside from God’s creative power and inspiration, it’s always going to be business as usual and any of our efforts will eventually cycle into routine and meaningless pursuits outside of the newness and redemption that God brings.

God on the other hand – infinitely creative, original, awesome so much so that not only does God create the fascinating diversity of nature - from the massive

He is intimately involved in our lives allowing for our personalities, blessing us with intelligence and creativity and giving us a never-ending supply of love attentive to our needs in the most effective ways possible.

His ways are not our ways – they are higher and more profound

His mercies are new every morning – they don’t wear out and repeat boringly

He supplies out of the abundance of his riches – which never end

Above all we could ask or imagine, God is making a way, providing, supplying, preparing, creating...

Are you with me?

Ok.

To the extent that God almighty, the creator of the universe is ingenious in new ways to love and draw us together Satan is cliché in his unoriginal tactics...and yet, over and again, we fall for them.

Like that fun uncle who gets you with his, “Hey, what’s that on your shirt...” (boops your chin) Maybe you had an uncle like this...maybe you are that uncle who says,

“Is that a giraffe...steals your fry.” “Shirt’s on fire...now it’s out!”

Only Satan isn’t fun and his schemes aren’t just a silly distraction. From our passage today I want us to get some perspective on this and what we can learn in the example from Nehemiah.

If we can be aware of Satan’s schemes we’re less likely to fall. If we are mindful that we have an enemy as Paul said, who is like a roaring lion and is set against us so hard that we need to be armed as if we were going into battle – then we can see defeat and distraction and difficulty for what it often times is – a scheme of Satan.

We’ve been making our way through this account in Nehemiah in this series “United” and if we’ve seen anything it is that life is a battle from beginning to end.

Nehemiah ran faced challenges the moment he set his heart to obey God's command to rebuild the walls and gates of Jerusalem. He faced difficulty before he even got to the city.

Then, after he reached Jerusalem, enemies rose up to oppose everything he did. Which might feel surprising...I mean after all, wasn’t Nehemiah on a very clear mission inspired and blessed by God? And yet Nehemiah and the entire project – a noble, god-honoring project was tripped up repeatedly.

Like Nehemiah, we are confronted by the enemy of justice and peace when God’s plan is for love, community - and lasting peace.

But Satan comes at us with the same old tactics - and they are always are rooted in some kind of fear..." (Listen to the full message on this podcast)

What happens when Christians disagree...like, really, really go at it? Maybe you struggle wondering if God’s going to just let people die without having heard about Him? I mean, what about all those people in the world who have never heard about Jesus? Maybe you have been feeling like God is not really hearing you or worse that He’s blocking your way in life. Acts Lesson 4/Day 7 Acts 5:27-32 In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon people who were obeying God and had a specific calling – prophets like Moses and Samuel, kings like David and Solomon, judges like Samson each received a temporary filling and empowering of the Holy Spirit. How is this different than now after Pentecost? It’s unlikely that you’ll be called before a court to defend your faith, but are you able to speak the basic and essential truths of the Christian message?

Acts Lesson 4/Day 2

Acts 4:23-31

Think of a time in your life when you were truly mistreated, misrepresented, or maligned – maybe at work? in front of other family members? a group of “friends?” How did you respond? Consider the apostles as a godly example. In the face of actual and public mistreatment, how did the apostles respond? They prayed...that the trial would stop? That they’d be vindicated? No. Their prayers focused on the truth of God and of His word. They focused on the unrighteous way God was represented and His son was treated. They prayed that they could continue to speak and to speak boldly while God continued to heal and accomplish miracles. It’s only natural to respond in hurt and anger when we are mistreated. It’s only natural to become indignant – “Hey! I don’t deserve that!” – when we’re maligned. It’s only natural to look for how we can be vindicated and even how the offending person can be dealt with. It takes supernatural intervention for us to respond like the apostles did. There was nothing natural about their response – well, not regular natural – it was supernatural. Eastern meditation, Zen behavior, even just ethical responses can help anyone look past being treated poorly, but that’s not what the disciples did. They didn’t just look past the hardship, they looked up – and not up and far-off somewhere to the universe – they looked up to the Creator, the Sovereign Lord. As we continue through this lesson, let’s tighten up our thoughts about exactly what it looks like to be a true follower of Christ. Let’s look beyond the good behavior, the sacrificial behavior, and look to the root of it all – the truth and character of God and the reality of the resurrection. Without that, being bold is something anyone can do – with it, our boldness means something for eternity.

Acts Lesson 4/Day 1

Welcome to Lesson 4! Day One of every lesson is always set aside to read the passage we’ll be studying for the next 10 days. Many clever folks have developed tools to help people study the Bible in a systematic way. There’s the REAP method, the SOAP method, the IDEA, POWER, and even the APPLE methods. Depending on the genre of Scripture you’re studying any one of these methods can be very helpful. Today we’re going to use the method. It’s a simple approach I’ve developed that you can easily recall...

P for Pray – Pray for wisdom and understanding and for God to guard your heart from error and lead you to truth

R for Read – Read the Word, the whole word and nothing but the Word – no commentaries – just read through the entire passage for that day.

O for Observe – note the essential and straightforward details – who, what, when, where, why, how. Include emotional tone, motivation, and overall situation going on

B for Back and Build – think back to what you know to be true about God, the people in this passage, and build on that knowledge to help you understand

E for Expand and Embrace – expand and see the big picture of what God is doing, how it points to Jesus, and then embrace that truth, command, or promise as applicable to your life today.

Using the PROBE method, note your thoughts and responses for each passage in today's lesson.

Acts Lesson 3/Day 6

Acts 4:1-4

“There’s a ‘But’ at the end of your ‘and’”

What are the ‘ands’ in your life today?

My family relationships are broken and I lost my job and where am I going to live and my health is failing...

And...and...and...Is there a room for a ‘but’ at the end of your list?

Take a moment to write your ‘ands’ down

... Now, go back over each one of them and turn it into a prayer of submission and petition to God in the name of Jesus.

Heavenly Father,

I am stressed, and challenged, and weak, and worried.

The circumstances I am facing are so hard, but today, right now, in this moment I open my hands

as they clasp each ‘and’ in my life and I relinquish my grip. In faith I give each one to you in Jesus’ name.

May your name be made great in every ‘and’ of my life today and may

my life always point to the ‘but God’ moment.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Acts Lesson 3/Day 4

Acts 3:11-16

“I wake up every morning and speak into existence in Jesus’ name what I want this day to bring.”

“’I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ is my life-verse and I speak it over my life.”

“At the name of Jesus all will bow, so that’s how I expect my trials to behave – bowing at Jesus’ name.”

There is power in the name of Jesus. Why? Is it because of the way the letters are arranged or is it because of the sound it makes being spoken? Is the name of Jesus powerful because of any way I use it? No. There is power in the name of Jesus because of who Jesus is. All prayer, all requests, all acts of faith and trust that are in line with the will of God will be answered not because Jesus is the magic word, but because Jesus is the Author of life, the Holy and Righteous One, the servant, the one true God made flesh who perfectly accomplished the will of the Father in his life and will complete it in ours through the Holy Spirit as well. Wielding the name of Jesus like some incantation over our calendar day or trial is to take His holy name in vain. Yes, there is power in the name of Jesus – not for us to use, but for us to acknowledge and submit to. Speak the name of Jesus with all the love and honor and respect it is due and bring your requests to God, in faith, trusting in Jesus as you speak in Jesus’ name.

Acts Lesson 3/Day 3

Acts 3:1-10

Like the lame man crippled from birth, each of us are lame in our own way. We may have two functioning legs, but we all have a crippled heart. Sin has corrupted this world and our bodies, minds, and hearts along with it. Like the lame man we may find ourselves begging for the basics instead of praying for true healing. We may look to the men and women in this world who seem to be healthier than we are in their body, mind, or heart – maybe their lifestyle and station in life – and we read their book, listen to their seminars or follow their social media looking for that great tip or just the right idea that will help transform our own life. The thing is, like the beggar reaching out for alms, we’re reaching for the wrong thing. What we really need is found only in gazing at the Healer. What we truly need is found only is the name of Jesus – Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Let’s be women today who are reaching out for more than alms. Let’s be women who live in the power of the Holy Spirit because we have fixed our gaze on Jesus and called upon His holy name. Pray today that God would help you see when your focus is on alms instead of the Almighty.

Acts Lesson 3/Day 2

Acts 2:40-47

I don’t know about you, but as I read this passage I get a longing in my heart. I can’t help thinking, “I want that. I want what they had...devotion to teaching, fellowshipping with other believers. With the wonders and signs going on you might think that their devotion would have been to seeing more of that, and probably some were there for the miracles. But, what I found most compelling in the description of this brand new church was their devotion to teaching. They had no “Bible” – no collection of writings like the New Testament like you and I do. In fact, the teaching they were devoted to wasn’t even Paul’s – he hadn’t been converted yet. They were getting their teaching from the apostles who had walked with Jesus and seen the resurrection first-hand – from Peter, James, John and the other nine apostles at this point. These fresh followers of Christ who didn’t even have a group name yet (they’re not called “Christian” until Acts 11) are getting fed and then turning around and feeding – literally and spiritually – others. That’s what I want. I want it in my life – a thirst for teaching, and I want it in your life. I want a church that thirsts for the essential truths about God. I want a church and I want to be that church who catches the passion from the example – the witness – of these first new believers! I wasn’t there in Jerusalem, but I am so thankful that their message went from Jerusalem to Judea to Samaria and beyond! Thank God, really and truly – Thank God for the great, good news of the Gospel!

Acts Lesson 2/Days 9 & 10

Acts 2:37-41 with Create & Share

If your hairdresser told you that your hair was thinning out, what would you ask? If your mechanic said you had a bad leak, what would you ask? What if your vet said your dog had fleas, what would you ask? If you’re like most people, you’d probably ask, “What should I do?” You have heard some important news from an expert...now what? Shrug and move on? Of course not. Get the help you need to make it right. Our final passage in this lesson begins with this question, “What shall we do?”

If there’s one thing about Peter’s preaching that stands out today it is that he did not avoid calling out the sins of the crowd listening.

Many preachers today hold back on making any focus on sin until they think they have won the crowd over with stories, music, or other methods that they believe are more enticing. Not Peter. Peter dove right into the truth. Peter was bold. Peter spoke the truth loud and clear, “This Jesus that you crucified...!”

Ouch.

Here’s the deal, why would someone ask, “What should I do?” if they don’t feel a need?

Why would anyone think they need a savior if they don’t feel a need to be saved? Jesus did not fear losing his audience by his hard sayings – he boldly preached the truth because dying without it is eternal just as much as living with it will be.

Today, our world is more interested in comfort and encouragement

than in hard realities of dying and sin. It’s too black and white to say there’s a heaven and a hell

and a direct path to one or the other that depends on receiving the truth and acting on it.

You’re “judgmental” if you tell someone they are a sinner.

In our society of Instagram photos, Twitter quotes, and Facebook posts people want a cozy message that fits

on a coffee mug or t-shirt. What do you think Peter would say on a mug or print on a t-shirt?

Acts Lesson 2/Day 7

Acts 2:14-24

This is the first of fifteen sermons in Acts. Most are from Paul, one from James, one by Stephen and finally seven or maybe eight are by Peter. Peter, who was once just a simple fisherman, is now giving a powerful and passionate sermon! Peter who rashly defended and then terribly denied Jesus Christ is now preaching with conviction and confidence! What a difference fifty days makes!

Is yours a "Build a Bear" faith? Luke ends his gospel with apostles who are dazed and even reluctant. It hasn’t even been a week since Peter denied he even knew Jesus, Judas – one of the closest in the 12 has turned Jesus in for a bag of silver and committed suicide afterwards, they’re a fearful group, a timid group. They’re confused and reluctant preachers of Christ. Before this moment they had failed at to even stay awake in their prayer time. Eye roll! Pause – sound familiar? It does to me! I sat on a train for nearly two hours a couple of weeks ago near a woman who was texting someone she referred to as “not just a booty call.” While she primped her hair and got ready for this meet up did I reach out and chat with her? Did I let her know about Jesus Christ? No. I wake up and miss my devotional time because I want a few more minutes of sleep. I lose concentration while hearing a sermon. I chicken out from sharing the gospel. I pray and feel ineffectual in my time with God. I doubt and worry and lose heart all the time. I sin and sin and sin the same old sins I’ve been sinning since I first learned there ever was such a thing as sin. I relate. Hello, my name is Jennifer and I’m a follower of Jesus. Join us through this study in Acts and become a more focused, loving, truly gospel driven and Holy Spirit inspired follower of Jesus Christ.

Acts Lesson 2/Day 6

Acts 2:1-13

Understanding Jewish Holy Days...

If I said that our family got together on Christmas day, you’d have a quick picture in your mind of what that might look like...tree, presents, traditional foods, music, and family all together. Just thinking of Christmas brings to your mind the memories with all its sights, sounds, and even smells, doesn’t it? Well, naming a Jewish holy day would do the same for any observant Jew.

Chapter two opens with “the day of Pentecost” and any Jew would immediately know what that meant – do you? Read here to understand more...

After God had given the ten commandments to His people through Moses and they were all still gathered at the foot of Mt. Sinai, God gave them seven celebrations to observe. This is all recorded in Leviticus 23. Each of these celebrations or feasts has a prophetic connection to God’s amazing plan of redemption from the crucifixion all the way through the ultimate coming of the Kingdom of God.

What does this have to do with Pentecost?

Pentecost is the Greek word for the Jewish holy day of Shavuot (Hebrew for “weeks”) or, as you will see in Leviticus 23, the “Feast of Weeks” which took place 50 days after Passover. This holy day is one of three sojourn feasts where all who were able were required to return to Jerusalem. This city would have been filled to fifty times its normal occupancy during the feast. Devout Jews – men and even women and children gather in Jerusalem every year during Pentecost. Jesus was crucified on Passover fulfilling this feast day and fifty days later as the Jews were observing Shavuot, He fulfilled this feast day as well.

Acts Lesson 2/Day 5

Acts 1:12-26

...Casting Lots...

Prescriptive -vs- Descriptive

If it’s in the Bible, we should do it, right? The disciples cast lots (rolled dice or flipped a coin perhaps) to decide between two disciples. They even prayed for God’s help. So, that means we should pray and cast lots when we have a big decision to make too, right?

Not necessarily. Just because the Bible describes something happening, doesn’t mean it is prescribing for us to do the same. This is what we call the difference between “prescriptive and descriptive” passages in the Bible. Nowhere in the Bible are we instructed to cast lots. We are told to pray, seek God, and have patience. The lot casting account in Acts is an example of descriptive writing which simply tells us what happened and should not be misunderstood as prescriptive – a passage telling or prescribing for us to do the same.

Acts Lesson 2/Day 4

Acts 1:6-11

...The Sabbath...

Acts 2:12 says that the disciples had returned from Mt. Olivet to Jerusalem which was a “Sabbath day’s journey away.” What is the Sabbath?

“The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested” (Exodus 31:16–17).

God commanded the Jews to observe a day of rest, and He called it the “Sabbath.” This was observed from sundown on the last day of the Jewish week (our Friday) to sundown the next day (Saturday). Because God commanded no work to be done on this day, the rabbis (Jewish teachers) taught that the distance someone could travel on a Sabbath should be a little less than three-fourths of a mile. Since this happened forty days after Easter, it was a Thursday, not a Sabbath day
