Guest: Rich Butler, Founder—RAGE Works Podcast Network

Originally aired on: Podcast Network Insights with Greg Wasserman

About This EpisodeWhat happens when a podcast network stops chasing CPMs and starts asking a different question: how do we help creators actually stick around?

Rich Butler has been running the RAGE Works Podcast Network since 2014, 12 years without changing the core model. In this conversation with Greg Wasserman, Rich walks through the architecture of a network built on a shared aggregation feed, friction removal, and a revenue split that puts the creator's independence first.

If you're a podcaster evaluating networks or a creator building your own, this episode is a practical look at what support from a network can actually mean.

Quick Stats Network founded: 2014—12 years running * Longest-running show: Turnbuckle Tabloid—525+ episodes * Hosting platform: Captivate FM * Revenue model:* 80/20 split (network-sourced ads only)

What We Cover0:00 — The jockey and the horse

Why talent matters more than gear and the analogy that frames everything.

3:08 — What a podcast network actually is

Rich's definition: a one-stop shop for discoverability, cross-pollination, and variety.

4:37 — How RAGE Works started

From a 400-episode run on Blog Talk Radio to building a network for the people who caught the podcast bug.

7:41 — The network feed model explained

Why running a shared aggregation feed helps new shows build an audience before their individual feed even goes live.

10:01 — Revenue without chasing ad sales

How the network makes money and why creator-sourced sponsorships get zero cut.

16:09 — Red flags when evaluating a network

The first question to ask isn't "how will you grow my show?" It's "how are you growing the network?"

19:11 — What Rich actually does as a network operator

Removing friction: RSS setup, editing, distribution, mic technique feedback, and platform reporting.

23:29 — Audio vs. video in 2026

Why audio comes first, how video complements it, and why the "us vs. them" framing is wrong.

27:48 — Onboarding new shows

The discoverability call, the gear list, the Google Drive workflow, and how real onboarding actually works.

33:43 — The long game and the ROI reframe

Why Rich defines ROI as "return on interest" and what Gary Vaynerchuk said on stage that nearly ended the network.

39:41 — Book recommendations

Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook, and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck* — two books every podcaster should read.

45:21 — Final thought: just create the thing

26 years in, Rich's parting message for anyone still waiting to start.

Key Takeaways1. A shared network feed isn't just a distribution trick, it's a litmus test for new shows and a built-in audience-building tool before a podcast's individual feed even goes live. 2. Most networks fail creators by leading with ad sales. Removing friction (RSS, editing, submission, platform reporting) is the actual service. 3. If a creator sources their own sponsor, the network takes nothing. That's a deliberate choice, not a gap in the model. 4. Audio first, always. Good audio teaches storytelling through inflection. Video amplifies what's already there; it doesn't replace it. 5. Consistency is the real filter. If a network has to chase you for your episode, the show is already in trouble. 6. Download counts aren't the metric. Ten loyal listeners in a room look very different when you're standing in front of them.

Quote of the Episode

"The podcast is the horse. You're the jockey. You have to be the compelling talent that makes me want to give a damn about you."

This week's episode of Toys & Tech of the Trade was a far departure from our usual episodes as Rich is joined by Corey Gumbs from the Black Podcasters Association and Matt Kaplowitz from Nerd News Today and Trek Untold for a roundtable discussion on content creation, podcast standards, and practices and workflows. We recorded this podcast on location at The Landing At 251, a co-working space in Westbury, NY.

We're back! Rich fires up the mics and shares the latest RAGE Works and Toys & Tech of the Trade updates, including the recent event Rich organized alongside Corey Gumbs from the Black Podcasters Association and Lee Uehara from NYC Podcasters and AAP. This was the first podcast event for the Queens area, and Rich had lots to say about how the event came together and the lessons he learned from the whole process. If you're on the fence about events, whether as an attendee or organizer, this episode should help you look at them differently.

In a world where profits come before people, Matthew Stibbe strives to be different and lead differently. His conversation with Rich not only touched on his fantastic resume in the gaming and later tech industry and how both of those paths led him to where he is today as CEO of Articulate Marketing. But, of course, it wouldn't be an amazing story without some toys and tech that came along for the ride.

Update 1: James Lopez is finally home as of August 2022, but he still has a long road to recovery and needs our help. Learn more about James' story here: https://bit.ly/3A8qbgM, and feel free to donate, visit and share this Go Fund Me link: https://gofund.me/da7a5f33

Rich recently stopped by the Stuck In My Mind Podcast and had a great conversation with Wil, aka Wize, the show's host. The conversation went so well that Rich wanted to introduce Wize and his work to the Toys & Tech of the Trade audience. Wize truly is a podcasting natural, and there was plenty of podcasting talk and advice for folks looking to get into the podcasting space, plus a bit inside baseball New York talk. Wize is a prime example of a podcasting success story, and the crazy thing is he's been in the space since 2019 but has the energy and presence of someone who has been podcasting for far longer.

Thanks, as always, to the fine folks at PodMatch for putting Rich on Wize's radar. Learn more about how PodMatch can help you find your next great podcast guest here: https://podmatch.com/

In this week's episode of Toys & Tech Of The Trade, Rich sits down with Leah Spasova, CEO of LIFESEXPERTS and Instructor and course creator at Bin Burnout and Thrive. Leah is a psychologist specializing in sex and relationships, educator, entrepreneur, animal activist, content creator, and more. This conversation covered the usual spectrum of topics the podcast is known for and tackled the struggles of being a workaholic, the burnout that comes with it, and how its impact is seldomly discussed, given the current acceptance of hustle culture. Leah shared many of her struggles and the strategies she implemented to treat workaholic tendencies. If you are someone struggling in this department, this conversation will hopefully give you some guidance and techniques to help you but if you need an extra bit of help, check out Leah's resources at www.binburnout.com. These tools are an excellent resource for fellow entrepreneurs, C-level executives, Senior Managers, and Business Leaders to help them reflect on, assess and improve their work-life balance, ending the expensive and exhausting burnout-recovery-burnout vicious cycle many experience throughout their career.

The Bin Burnout and Thrive site offers a range of self-test questionnaires to help assess where a professional is in terms of burnout, workaholism, perfectionism, and their ability to balance work and personal life. Bin Burnout & Thrive also provides many resources to help individuals learn how to recover from burnout and workaholism independently. Furthermore, they invite those committed to themselves, their well-being, and long-term success to a structured course providing a step-by-step transformative journey in a supportive environment and community

Leah is one of the many brilliant folks from the Underdog community we've showcased in past episodes. If you want to check out other members of the Underdog community, check out their episodes below:

Networking Is Not A Four Letter Word!

With the specter of COVID-19 in the rearview to an extent, Rich checked out some local networking events organized by the Long Island Networkers. Unlike the usual networking events, these were informative and worth attending because the approach was different from just walking around and exchanging business cards. Rich shares his thoughts on networking and how it can benefit your business or entrepreneurial endeavor, and you may not even need to leave the house to do it.

Thanks to Noah Kagan, the Underdog community that came together has been a huge source of inspiration for Rich. He wanted to show his appreciation to the group and its members by sharing their stories. We kick off the series with John Hill, aka John Small Mountain. John is an entrepreneur, content creator, author, and martial artist who uses his talents to help others improve their sales techniques and tactics. John advocates approaching sales with empathy and a more human touch versus the cut-throat tactics that always seem to be instilled in sales strategy. Rich and John discussed how he got started in sales, his time in the military, and a whole lot more. John not only shared plenty of actionable advice but some great resources for listeners to check out.

Toys & Tech of the Trade celebrates 50 episodes and closes out its second season with Andrew Davis. Andrew is the founder of the PopAnimeComics brand and hosts the PopAnimeComics podcast covering anime, comics, pop culture, and professional wrestling. Rich's conversation with Andrew ran the gamut and covered a lot of Rich and Andrew's shared interests, as well as a deep dive into how Andrew produces the PopAnimeComics podcast and web show. They also discussed alternative investing strategies using comic books and trading cards that have exploded during the pandemic as more casual collectors enter the space, plus lots of toys & tech talk.

On this week's edition of Toys & Tech of the Trade, Rich sits down with podcaster and content creator Tim B. Tim is one half of the duo that hosts the Fight In Sight Podcast, which covers MMA but has no qualms about getting into other combat sports. Tim and Rich discuss some MMA, which is to be expected, but they also dig into the origins of the podcast, Tim's approaches to show prep, the tech he uses, and the toys that bring a smile to his face.

While social media is sometimes a vicious place, it can also be a welcoming and exciting place to connect with folks who have similar views or are into similar things. This week's guest is proof of that as I connected with him through a post from someone wearing one of his products. I connected with Bobbito Ross after seeing a Rally B. Art on Instagram wearing some of Bobbito's merchandise. I checked out Bobbito's social and his website. I was blown away by his talent and unique approach to promoting Puerto Rican culture and beliefs while leveraging his own experiences and interests.

The conversation ran the gamut from Bobbito's work and its impact to cultural identity and the need for voices to keep those cultural identities, ideologies, and beliefs out there for others to learn and grow.

Gadgets and gear took a back seat in a way, but this conversation's value will hopefully resonate with listeners much like it resonated with Rich.

In this week's episode of Toys & Tech of the Trade, Rich sits down with content creator, podcaster, and founder of PodMatch Alex Sanfilippo. What is PodMatch? PodMatch is a service that connects podcasters with potential guests using tactics similar to the dating apps of today and factors details such as compatibility, availability, and other pertinent information. PodMatch leverages an algorithm to connect you with ideal guests or hosts/podcasts.

Alex truly embodies the hustler's mindset. From starting a golf ball resale business as a kid to running rental properties as a teenager to following in his father's footsteps into the aerospace industry. This talented founder embraced the grind and his business acumen to start his Creating a Brand podcast and, of course, PodMatch plus the Daily PS blog as well. Rich and Alex dig into those stories, and of course, the tech and the toys the came along the way.

If you're looking for an excellent service to get guests for your podcast or for you to make the podcast rounds, definitely PodMatch is a shot.

In this week's episode of Toys & Tech of the Trade, Rich sits down with content creator, podcaster, and strongman competitor Joe Szatmary. Coach Joe is the host of the Becoming The Lion podcast and owner of The Lion's Den training facility in Colmar, PA.

Coach Joe's story is truly a tale of grit and determination and serves as proof that if you believe in something and grind hard enough, you can make it. During this episode, Joe and Rich discuss Joe's start, from his humble beginnings in his aunt's garage through the struggles in getting his facility off the ground. Within the core of the conversation, we dig into the tech Joe uses to create content for his YouTube channel and his podcast. Also on the discussion table is his supplement stack (including one he thinks is hugely underrated) and the benefits of owning a dog (shoutout to Zeke).

This conversation is not strictly about a gym, as Joe's experiences and wisdom he shared can be applied to any business or side hustle.

The Lion's Den Training Facility is located at:

311 Bethlehem Pike

Suite K

Colmar, PA 18915

Toys & Tech of the Trade marks its 40th episode with some realness as Rich discusses entrepreneurial depression and how the many ways it can take hold. If you’re a creator or entrepreneur struggling with depression because of COVID-19 or other things, know that you are not alone and there are others out there fighting those same battles. Talk to someone if you can and don’t internalize those struggles.

Imagine starting a business with a friend and that business changing the car sales game for the better. Now imagine that business being acquired by Carvana and taking an idea between two friends and taking it to the next level. This week’s guest Nicholas Hinrichsen not only did that when it came selling to cars alongside his friend and business partner Chris Coleman via their company Carlypso. Nicholas and Chris now look to do it in the auto loan refinance space with his latest venture With Clutch.

Nicholas shared a lot of great tips and tactics when it comes to both being a founder and finding your niche in the business world.

“Don’t Let A Good Crisis Go To Waste.”

Please take note of the quote Nick shared during our conversation and find ways to make the most of this current climate and do those things you’ve been putting off or were uncertain about doing. Taking that leap of faith may be all you need to do.

The benefits of being an excellent public speaker are more necessary than you think as our interactions, especially in the current environment, when communications rely less on in-person meetings and more on conversations in front of a camera or behind a microphone. This week’s guest Brenden Kumarasamy shares more on the value of being an excellent public speaker and how he turned his public speaking skillset into a brand and a successful YouTube channel.

Brenden’s quote, “Be insane or be the same,” hit home, and if you’re a creator moving out of your comfort zone into uncharted waters, this might prove to be the first move you’ll need for success.

When I was growing up, a career in the gaming industry was a pipe dream for many kids unless you had the technical chops in design or got your foot in the door as a tester. A lot has changed, and now there are many different opportunities in the gaming industry. People can create games, talk about games, and even make money playing them. This week we welcome Sebastian “Chosen 1” Burton to discuss careers in the gaming industry as well as tools and resources he uses to help his clients and grow his business. Sebastian is one of the driving forces in eSports with his Gold Standard Gaming brand and hopes to lead the charge to the next growth spurt of eSports, which Sebastian has aptly named eSports 2.0.

On a personal note, I have known Sebastian for years and to see his journey from a successful pro gamer to a successful entrepreneur is inspiring. There are a lot of pieces of actionable advice in this episode that you can apply beyond gaming into other fields.

When it comes to conventions, the future is very uncertain, with some of your favorite shows skipping 2020 altogether while others are adapting to what many consider the new normal leveraging video conferencing tools to connect with their fans.
In this episode, we sit down with returning guest Megan Amo from the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA) to discuss Anime Expo Lite 2020, which replaced the usual Anime Expo event. Megan and Rich discussed the logistics and challenges of doing a virtual event on short notice and ensuring that anime fans around the world had a good time.

The virtual approach for this year’s Anime Expo was a tremendous success considering all the obstacles Megan and her team had to overcome. The show provided 50+ hours of programming content and reached 70+ countries. It secured over 11 million web, and mobile impressions and, most of all, had over 500,000 views. The engagement was off the charts with the SPJA fielding over 150,000 chat messages.

The Anime Expo Lite proves that dedicated fans will support an event through thick and thin, and more importantly, it validated the virtual event medium. Megan’s insights and advice will hopefully inspire those of you, considering virtual events to take a chance.
Next year the Anime Expo turns 30, and we look forward to seeing what Megan and her colleagues have in store for anime fans across the globe.

Toys & Tech of the Trade spotlights a fellow RAGE Works creator this week as Call Me When It’s Over’s Alexis A. McCoy stops by. Guided by the quote, “If entertaining is my passion and changing the world is my goal, why not entertain to change the world?” Alexis applied her background in entertainment and theater to create Love Is Enough Productions.
Love Is Enough Productions is a full-service media production company with specialties in event management, video production, production management, and creative consulting. Alexis and her team at Love Is Enough Productions have created a variety of short films, live productions, and plays that entertain and enlighten. Much like Sean Kneese, who stopped by in our previous episode aspiring actors, directors and producers can learn a lot from Alexis McCoy’s journey.

One of the toughest challenges for podcasters, besides raising awareness and monetization is content and getting guests. Poddit is a new service that looks to alleviate some of those challenges by providing a platform for podcasters and potential guests to connect. It eliminates the needless back and forth of chasing down guests and, more importantly, finding ones that resonate with your audience. Poddit cofounder Brent Basham joined Rich this week to talk about Poddit and share the tools and tactics used to run this brand.

Toys & Tech of the Trade is all new this week as we kick off our second season of shows! Our guest is CBS Sports Radio producer and fellow podcaster Mike Bisceglia who hosts the Basketball Drives with Mike Bisceglia podcast. The show combines Mike’s Uber Eats work experiences with his passion for sports. While the combination may seem like something you don’t hear every day the result is both funny and informative. Mike’s show is not your usual talking head sports podcast.

What happens when two hip-hop fans who are also techies come together to school the masses? The answer is The Phat Startup. While The Phat Startup is no longer around its impact on my business is still being felt. Its founders Anthony Frasier and James Lopez changed the game and while they may have gone their separate ways their contributions are still making an impression. Anthony is leading a tech renaissance in New Jersey and James is uniting fathers across the country via the Fatherhood Lit brand.

I sit down with James this episode and we discuss how the journey he started with The Phat Startup led him to create the Fatherhood is Lit movement which puts fathers and their kids first with positive reinforcement, amazing events and most importantly a camaraderie amongst his community of fathers. Learn why its all about presence and not about presents.

In October 2017 I was part of a panel that took place at the PhotoPlus Expo with Gary Vaynerchuk and Chase Jarvis where I shared some issues, I was having monetizing and growing my brand. The result of that conversation almost made me pull the plug on RAGE Works and kill something I’ve grown over the last thirteen years. This episode showcases the conversation between Gary, Chase, and I plus I update everyone at where I am at in this journey and the future of RAGE Works as a whole. I hope this episode can serve as a lesson to those trying to launch, maintain or grow their brands. It is not easy, and the road has many pitfalls but if you love what you do sometimes that makes it all worthwhile.

This week’s episode is a long overdue interview with Matt Cipoletti. Matt has been in the podcast game a long time and co-hosts Big Kev’s Geek Stuff alongside Big Kev. Matt and Big Kev are one of the few podcasters I personally know that took their show to satellite radio which is no small feat. In addition to bringing Big Kev’s Geek Stuff to satellite Matt also served as co-host on the It’s Erik Nagel show also on satellite radio. Matt has an amazing story and is one of the genuine good guys in this crazy world of podcasting. We hope Matt’s story inspires you to go out there and create. Who knows where it will take you!

When not talking about comic books, movies and other geek related things on air Matt spends his time with his wife and son and also growing his GeekStuffOG Twitch channel.

Podcasting, comics and a bit of wrestling are on deck for this week’s episode of Toys & Tech of the Trade as we are joined by graphic designer and podcaster Peter Melnick. Peter is the co-host of The Marvelists podcast alongside Eddie Wilson. The Marvelists dissects Marvel films with the MCU films leading the charge.

Peter and I also discussed podcasting and the studio and mobile gear that is used to bring The Marvelists to life.

Somewhere along the way WWE superstar Savio Vega came into the conversation and the end result was probably one of the wildest wrestling related stories I’ve heard in some time.

Toys and collectibles take center stage with this week’s guest as Rich sits down with Jonathan Cathey. Jonathan is the Founder/CEO and President of The Loyal Subjects action vinyl company which recently announced a strategic partnership with Bandai.

Jonathan shared the origin story of The Loyal Subjects and how the company was funded with a $500 personal check and now has a presence at major retailers and specialty shops all without having zero connections to the toy industry. Rich and Jonathan talked toys, tech and even guitars on this episode so there is something for everybody.

The Loyal Subjects story is inspirational for any entrepreneur and a shining example that success does not happen overnight but is a product of hard work. We look forward to sharing more about The Loyal Subjects in the coming months.

On this week’s episode of Toys & Tech of the Trade, we sit down with Sam and Emily Cataldo. Sam and Emily are the owners of Saverio’s Pizza Room located in Massapequa, Long Island. They were gracious enough to allow us into their home to record this interview and share their origin story and give us a glimpse into the tech that helps them run their business and toys that bring a smile to their face plus Emily shares what makes a perfect meatball during our hot seat segment.

Saverio’s Pizza Room does not serve your run of the mill pizza and that is something that sets them apart from other establishments. Their pizzas are made to order and utilize the freshest ingredients combined with Neapolitan cooking techniques to bring you a taste of Italy with every bite.

Each pizza is cooked in an 850-degree handcrafted Mario Acunto oven that was imported from Naples and is the “tech” behind each amazing pie.

If you are in the NYC area, make sure to pay them a visit.
