A Christ-centered podcast for your heart and mind. Episodes will equip Christians to engage the world biblically by helping them understand why they believe what they believe. (Colossians 1:28)
Whatever sits at the top of your hierarchy of truth determines how you interpret everything else, including your own suffering. In part two, I use a fast food restaurant to show how authority works, then walk through understanding my own depression through this worldview hierarchy. I share my own 20 years with dysthymia and severe depression, and how this hierarchy became a life-saving tool for me.

Every worldview runs on five sources of truth: Scripture, reason, tradition, experience, and emotion. All five are unavoidable. All five have real value. And all five will affect everything you believe the moment they are move important than God's Word. In part one, I walk through each category, showing how Scripture discusses using each rightly and wrongly, and give you a real assignment for catching which one is actually running your life.

Knowing why we're depressed doesn't immediately remove the pain of depression. For many, depression can linger far longer than we expect it to, and certainly much longer than we'd prefer. So as we're putting off the sin that has led to things like hopelessness, despair, or fear... what do we do about those very real feelings that may linger?
This episode begins a short "mini series" that will discuss a few ways we can respond to our depression in a way that is biblically faithful, true, and Christ-oriented. For starters... let's discuss how looking at rocks can help.

It's not surprising that those suffering from chronic pain are more likely to experience depression and thoughts of suicide. As Christians, how are we supposed to think about these things? Should we understand depression differently than the world does? Does the Bible offer any hope, or are we merely victims of biology?
This episode is an honest, even painful, look at how I've walked through depression and suicidal thoughts in my life, and how God's word can guide us into not only understanding why we experience these things, but what we can do about them.

Should you share your suffering with someone who has it worse than you? What's the point of God's comfort? How can we think biblically and faithfully about suffering in our lives and the lives of others? This episode explores the importance of how to think about comfort, and what God wants us to do with it.

About This Episode
Why does a sovereign God tell us to pray? He knows what we need, does what He pleases, and can't be changed by human manipulation. If we're honest, sometimes it can seem like prayer is pointless, and that makes it even more difficult to "pray without ceasing." In this episode, I explore why prayer isn't our way of changing God's will, but His way of changing ours.

If Satan's very nature makes him incapable of things like whispering lies into our minds or personally attacking thousands of people at once, what do we make of the verses that imply we need to watch out for his attacks? This episode digs in to a part of language we use every day that can help us better distinguish between the being known as Satan and the world system he's responsible for.

When suffering, sometimes we go into "survival mode" and set aside may important things in our lives. Sometimes, we wonder if we should bother reading the Bible when it's too difficult. This episode helps you think through how we should understand the effects of suffering on our Bible reading, how to be on guard against the deceptiveness of our flesh, and how to rejoice in giving God everything we have in our daily devotions (especially when we don't have much to give).

If we believe in a good and sovereign God, are we wrong to want Him to heal us? Can we over-emphasize our desire to be healed? How can we find a good balance? This episode digs in to a question many people may not think to ask, but it is an important question to answer for those who do ask it.

You'll often hear me say "God doesn't call us to be healthy, but He does call us to be holy." I know this will bother some people, especially those who have been exposed to the Prosperity Gospel. This episode focuses on what I've learned from God's word that makes me want sufferers to understand and embrace this important truth so that they can more fully glorify God, even in their pain.

The Divine Council Worldview doesn't just affect how we read the Bible; it changes our lives. So why do so many people (including me!) react so poorly when we first encounter it? And does it really matter if we embrace it?
I sat down with my good friend, Chris Lenoir, to discuss those very questions.

About This Video
How do we read and study the Bible? What's the difference between the two? Are there things we should avoid when reading the Bible?
This episode takes a first step in exploring Systematic Theology. If we want to have a biblical worldview, we must know what the Bible says and means. That means we must read the Bible for what it is: a divinely inspired historical document.

In these early verses, we get familiar with the setting, writer, and audience before spending a lot of time focusing on a term that is central to everything Peter is about to say - what it means to their identity, obedience, and life as God's "chosen."

Does God want you to study theology? Yes! When we properly understand what theology is in the life of Christ's followers, we see that God calls His people to theology over and over again. This episode looks at God's consistency from Genesis to Revelation as He repeatedly tells His people the same thing: We must grow in truth so we can live in truth.

How was this word understood 2,000 years ago, and how does that impact how we live today? What a difference a word makes. 2 Peter 1:5 says that we must supply a variety of spiritual disciplines. Does that mean our spiritual maturity is a result of our personal strength? Do we need to figure out strategies to be more self-controlled or loving? Is our success or failure up to us alone? What, and how much, do we actually contribute to our spiritual lives? These questions and more drove my study into everything implied by a single word. Join me as I walk you through how I studied this passage, what I discovered, and the challenge I faced when I understood what God inspired Peter to write.

Living for Jesus requires Christians to know what is good, but also to be aware of what is evil. Yet as we learn more about Satan, we see more of what it truly means that he's the "god of this world" (2 Corinthians 4:4). In this final teaching on who Satan truly is, we look at many specific tools Satan uses to blind the world to the gospel and weaken Christ's followers. It's a long one, but it will also be one that encourages us to lean even more on our perfect Savior.

We did it! This rounds out my lengthy discussion on who Satan really is and what he can do. Although I can't dig deeply into every single verse, this episode will better equip you to think about Satan in a way that fits with the rest of what God's word reveals about Satan, our sin, and what the Christian life must look like. In the end, my prayer has been that a better understanding of how Satan works through worldliness will help all of us see how much we need Jesus for every single moment of our lives.
The sound quality isn't up to my normal standards. If you find it genuinely difficult to listen to, please let me know so I can decide whether I should record and edit a new video.

Why are we tempted? Can we blame Satan or his demons for implanting thoughts and desires? Is he responsible for our sinful choices? This episode digs into a simple truth from James 1. However, before that truth can make sense to us as it did to his original audience, we have to be careful not to assume things about Satan that the Bible either doesn't say or completely contradicts. When we understand this, we may better be able to kill our sin before it starts because we'll understand where the temptation is truly coming from.

God saved us. Now what? Hebrews 10 reminds us to think about what Jesus did, and who we are in Him, so that we can live holy lives for the few short years we're on this earth. If we choose rebellion after Christ has forgiven our sins, God promises us that He will discipline us like the good and perfect father that He is. As Christians, we are left with two choices - we can face God's discipline, even to the point of death, or we can endure through the freedom Jesus gave us and the transforming power of the holy spirit in our lives.
And if you've ever wondered why Hebrews 10:26-27 sounds like you can lose your salvation, this episode is for you.

Context is king. When we don't understand what the author and his audience understood, thought about, and believed, it's nearly impossible to understand what's really being said. This episode is a teaching I did in Hebrews 9 where I dig in to what this Jewish audience believed about the old covenant, tabernacle, high priest, and blood offerings made every day. By understanding why these things were so important to them, we can better understand why the author spends the rest of chapter 9 using language for Jesus that keeps calling back to these old covenant things.

We all have family routines. When we're around the same people day after day, year after year, we get into a familiar groove of living and interacting with them. For too many of us, one of those common routines involves giving our families the worst side of us. We are patient, tolerant, and even enjoyable with friends, coworkers, and people at church, but behind closed doors we put our sin natures on full display.
This episode is a difficult one. None of us want to confront that reality, and many don’t want to let go of the anger, criticism, and quarreling that's become a normal part of their family routine. But if we truly believe that God has given us our families on purpose, we want to honor them as our greatest opportunity to serve God through our earthly relationships. My prayer is that this episode will encourage and equip Christians to do give their families the best side of them.

God says: we’re basically wicked - we choose to sin - we love ourselves too much - we must be saved from sin by Christ - our greatest need is to love and serve Christ

For some, prayer can be as difficult as it is important. We know we should do it more, but without a good understanding of what prayer is and why we do it, we're unlikely to see much success in doing it regularly.
This episode digs into what is commonly called "The Lord's Prayer," looking at the things Christ modeled and why He may have chosen those specific things. In the end, the goal of this episode is to help you better understand what you believe about God, prayer, and your purpose as a Christian in this world. By understanding those things, I think prayer will start to make a lot more sense.

We finish our series on Christians & Psychology by answering the most important question - What, or who, is the answer to our problems? Once we've properly interpreted our problems, it's important to seek a solution that will address the root issues we face. Jesus is that answer, but not in a lazy, "Pray more to feel better" way. Jesus is the ultimate solution to everything related to our sin, whether it's clearing our guilt before God or cleansing us from a prideful and idolatrous heart by setting our focus on Him.

When we start with a biblical worldview of who we are, we come to radically different interpretations of why we experience certain thoughts, behaviors, or desires. This episode takes the foundation we laid in Episode 93 to help us better understand the problems that psychologists insist are purely natural.
This will be a difficult episode for some people to hear. Be sure not to make hasty judgments on one way or another. Instead, consider everything, digest it slowly, surrender to God the things you want to be true, and from there evaluate what kind of worldview lines up better with your understanding of mental health. If you realize you need to adopt a more biblical understanding, let this episode be a resource that you can return to as you allow God to align your thinking with what is true.

Just because baptism isn't required for salvation doesn't mean it's not expected after salvation. There are many Christians who haven't yet been baptized, yet God's word has no hint that baptism is meant to be done months, or even years, after someone is saved. No one gets excited about being tempted to sin. However, we often approach it with the idea that we just need to survive long enough to resist it. Sometimes we succeed, oftentimes we don’t. However, when the temptation passes, we know it won't be long before it returns.

Before committing to reading the Bible in a year, evaluate why you've failed in the past and whether you're setting yourself up for success this time around. This episode helps you examine not just why you've struggled to consistently read your Bible in the past but gives some ways you can succeed and grow in your regular time in God's word.
Why we fail:
-From couch potato to marathon running
-Desire doesn't create more time
Ways to succeed:
-Realize there's nothing magical about reading it in exactly 1 year
-Figure out the pace you can stick to
-Decide where you need to start
-Properly budget time by removing something
-Try a reading plan
-Consider going deeper instead of reading extra
-Supplement with an audio Bible

How I Survive Depression (This is only an article - I really thought I'd done an episode on it as well!)
Blaise Pascal quote: “All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.”

It can be scary to know that there are things about God we don't understand. There may be things about Him we don't like. What do we do? Often times, we'll diminish God and bring Him down to a level that we can understand and control. This episode discusses what that looks like and why we can have faith that God doesn't need to bow to our desires before we trust Him.

After looking at who the Beast is we can now look at the purpose of his mark. I discuss why there will be a mark; who will receive it; the end result of the world the Antichrist creates; why Christians don't need to fear accidentally getting the mark; and I challenge listeners to stop accusing things of being the Antichrist or the mark of the Beast without a biblical reason behind those accusations.

If we're honest, God's knowledge of the future seems to contradict our free will. If He knows what we'll do, are we really free to choose? Some explain this by claiming that God doesn't know the entire future because He doesn't know what we will do - He's like us, always learning and growing based on new information. Unfortunately, we run into some terrifying problems when we try to force God to line up with our understanding of free will.

Why does Christ say He'd rather us be cold than lukewarm?
