In this episode, I go over my recent trip to Georgia to climb Mount Kazbek day by day. It's just impossible to include every detail and even when editing I remembered bits that would have been fantastic to include. But tomorrow I'll remember even more.

I also cut in segments from interviews I did with three of the people from the trip.

I hope you enjoy it!

Cast your mind back to when you were 19/20/21 years old; what were you doing? For me, I was crawling my way through an undergraduate degree on a diet of alcohol! For this episode's guest, Adriana Brownlee, she had already climbed Elbrus, Killimanjaro, Aconcagua, completed the Welsh 3000's - not to mention the National Three Peaks at age 9!

Now, Adri has grown her goal to being the youngest person to complete all 14 8000 metre peaks. With Everest, Manaslu, and Dhaulagiri already in the bag, we talk through her already huge experience and her down-to-Earth mindset talking all things mountains (+ the normal waffle from me). I hope you enjoy!

Follow Adri as she completes all 8000 metre peaks:

Unfortunately - and a long story made short - we had some internet issues which led to our own audio being fine (we recorded on our own ends separately), but some small background noises happening throughout the call at times as we had to chat on WhatsApp video call; things like my headset microphone tapping or hearing me laugh in his audio. Perhaps I'm overthinking it, but I hope it's not a bother for you all.

Jay is the host of 28 Summers and someone who 'lives adventurously'. What does this mean? Well, we'll dive into it within the podcast and the inspiring, stop-dead-in-your-tracks moment and reason behind it. But, it essentially means taking the joy and the lessons of adventure through micro-adventures over a weekend or before work all the way to larger expeditions across the water and up mountains.

Having Jay on was a true pleasure and it was so fun chatting with him. I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I did, and I hope more so that you take a listen to the 28 Summers podcast if you haven't already!

Well, my apologies for the extremely long, unplanned hiatus. The same day I announced my Denali plans, something came up which has resulted in my becoming - happily - a full-time single Father 7 days a week. The issue is still ongoing but we're back, baby!

James Dyer is this week's guest, and he is an incredibly accomplished man! Hear us discuss everything from the jungle, to the arctic, to leadership. You can follow along with his adventures at: https://www.james-dyer.org/adventures/

Fiona Quinn is most notably known for setting a world first and Stand-Up Paddleboarding from Lands End to John O'Groats - including crossing the Irish Sea and narrowly avoiding the third-largest whirlpool in the world.

Hayley Gendron is a multi-disciplined and quietly adventurous character who advocates for indigenous and environmental rights. Without making a song and dance about it all, her experience sees her in the Peruvian and Ecuadorian rainforest working with animals, travelling and adventuring from Patagonia to Canada, and mountaineering and rock climbing all while learning her native language Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) and promoting indigenous rights. When she's not doing this? You can probably find her paddling in the bay around Vancouver or hiking a nearby mountain.

The episode talks about the influence of adventure, purest canoe expeditions (is portaging necessary?), type 2 fun, wearing a hockey helmet for rock climbing, falling in love with landscapes, the Yosemite Of The Sea, indigenous rights and its relation to environmental protection, lessons learned from native languages, an adventure-gone-wrong in Patagonia, and more!

Luc Mehl is a lover of Alaskan wilderness and nature, with an incredible ‘adventure CV’ under his belt. Born, raised, and residing in Alaska, he has traversed the three highest mountains in North America, headed out to remote and wild regions of Alaska, and completed extreme, multi-day endurance events. For education and vacation, he has also traveled and explored places like Norway, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, Nepal. All of this while expanding his self-powered method to include hiking, biking, ice-skating, pack rafting, and skiing.

In the episode, we discuss traversing the three biggest mountains in North America, discovering – and staying well away from – the line of acceptable risk, adventures in Alaska and the Alaskan Wilderness Classics, experiencing ‘gifts’ of nature, ‘good fear’ and ‘bad fear’, the 60% rule, and so much more such as mindset and even mental health in the outdoors.

Luc Mehl Luc Mehl is an incredibly accomplished outdoorsman and adventurer. With such a huge ‘adventure CV’ even just for Alaska, it was a complete pleasure to have him on the show.

"The gold is not going to be sitting at home. The gold isn't going to be dreaming of far off places. The gold is going to be you putting your footprints on that snow" Ian Finch

I'm Chris, the host of Between The Mountains and I'm going to climb Denali in May 2023.

Well, that kinds of feels like a white lie. There's still training to be had, money to save, sponsorship to acquire... but we'll get on to that. The main thing, is that my wording has changed.

For long enough I have kept talking about climbing Denali in hypotheses, in hopes, and in dreams. I've mentioned it in recordings with people like Jon Gupta and Renee Roaming, and outside of recordings like Ian Finch and Emily Scott (who's interview comes out next week). Now, I'm saying I'm going to, and since then I have literally dreamt that I have. May 2023, my 30th birthday present from me to me, I will climb Denali.

For you, the listener, this will be some of the best content yet. This sub-series will be focussed on providing you with value from experts on a wide range of topics from altitude and kit lists to winter camping and training - and everything in between.

I have been so excited to announce this, and I hope you enjoy this series, and spread the word!

Insightful, Inspiring, and Incredible are three words that come to mind when both researching and recording with Ian Finch. With a fisherman Father fascinated by native cultures and with Ian's own background in the Royal Marines, he has gone on to explore and adventure with culture at the forefront of his mind.

Having paddled the Yukon river, led expeditions across Norway, canoed in to the wild Highlands, and so much more, Ian's experience and stories are unique... and yet the experience connecting with people over the love and necessity of nature can be experienced by all.

Some of her most important work, though, is the conservation effort that Holly puts in to save elephants. 96 elephants are poached each day, and Holly's work alongside rangers with non-gory exhibitions is helping to reduce that number.

Holly Budge

Having Holly on the show was a total pleasure. The passion and experience she has for adventure and the world really shines through, and I hope you hear that in the podcast.

With a background like hers, it's also no wonder that she is a speak too. You can check out more of Holly's work with her own personal website here.

Her work alongside and supporting rangers and communities is incredible, and I highly recommend you check out her work and support if you can. With endorsements from people like David Attenborough, you really can't go wrong here!

Nepal has been a honeypot for adventurers alike. From those wanting to explore culture, to the mountains, to the summits, I think everyone can agree just how majestic this place is.

In this episode, Andrew talks through the itinerary for his Manaslu Circuit Trek. Trekking through forests, past waterfalls, viewing 8000 metre peaks, and a rare animal... I'll let you find out which!

Happy Holidays everyone! Today's episode is just a fun one. Join Ryan from Travel With Cooky, Dustin from That Adventure Life, and Ali who writes the music for the podcast as we just have a laugh talking about the year, adventure, travel, and a Christmas Quiz!

The episode is a recording of our live episode that we streamed to the Facebook page (so make sure you're following on social to get updates!) This was such a fantastic time. Having become accustomed to speaking with friends through a webcam, there were times during the recording where things just felt... normal.

Thank you to everyone who tuned in. We hope to do more, so let us know what you think on btmtravelpod@gmail.com

TJ David is, on paper, a professional skier and trail runner. In real life he is even more than that! Talking about quite possibly his favourite ski mountaineering expedition, hear TJ talk about his time in the Lyngen Alps, Norway taking in the breath-taking mountains reaching straight out of the fjords!

Hitting some popular and some untouched slopes, and finishing the day with beer in a small hut in the snow, TJ dives in to this expedition and will absolutely captivate you as you instinctively start booking your next ski trip!

TJ David – More Than Just Ski Mountaineering TJ asks his clients a lot about their “WHY”‘s. In the interview, I turned the question on to him.

There’s is so much to this personal level of reasoning and spirit. But what TJ touches upon – which I think it silently very inspirational – is his love for the daily process of improving a little bit, every single day. Making those small steps that over time produce the big picture goal. Having that long-term goal.

What is your long-term goal?

TJ is an incredible individual, with so much to give. You can check out his coaching here, his Instagram here, and more information on himself here.

You can read his own account of this expedition, and few more stunning photographs, by clicking here.

Alex Staniforth found that running, walking, and cycling to the highest point in each UK county was faster than the waiting time to receive any mental health support from the UK's National Health Service (NHS). It's not that there's nothing, but rather that the NHS is overwhelmed with so many needing support.

It was at this point that Alex started Mind Over Mountains charity - his very own Natural Health Service supporting those in need, and bringing them together as a community.

More Than Just Fresh Air

Mind Over Mountains go one step further. While bringing you the community and outdoors experience together, they also give you the tools you'll need to better yourself with your headspace.

Mind Over Mountains aims to help you find purpose.

Will has cycled between all 282 Munros and climbed them, solo-circumnavigated the Scottish coastline by sea kayak, completed the Coldest Corbett Challenge, and regularly completes  expeditions in Patagonia.

Will's first adventure, though, starts at 12 years old. After a fantastic outdoor upbringing in North West Scotland, during the peak of Ray Mears' influence, Will was 'cast-away' by his parents with a few friends overnight. From there, Will has gone on to complete expeditions in Patagonia, Scotland, Iceland, across Europe, and New Zealand.

Tim Howell has one of the most adrenaline filled histories from all of our interviews. Tim has wildlife guided in Africa, and then went on to join the Royal Marines. It was here as a Commando, that he developed his mental and physical robustness. He became Mountain Leader and has gone on to achieve so much more. Using this love and passion for the mountains and climbing, Tim did his first BASE jump in France, 2013.

Having Tim on the podcast was such a pleasure. He has such a depth of experience, and you can follow along this journey by checking out his website here, or more actively on his Instagram or Facebook.

Also, apologies for the slight internet quality on this episode. Hopefully it goes unnoticed.

Hello, welcome to Between The Mountains Adventure Podcast

That's right, we are now an 'adventure' podcast. The tiny decision to change from 'travel' to 'adventure' came from just looking at the natural path that this podcast has taken. The 5 must-do adventures, the interviews, the expeditions. They are all so fun to record and are going down a treat with you all!

If you're an avid listener of the podcast, you're probably expecting an episode today! But, I'm just here to announce that we are moving to a 1 per week schedule. Doing 2 per week has been fantastic, but moving to 1 per week means I can really focus on the quality for all of you and maximising the time that it's released.

So from now on, episodes will be released on Friday's 12noon UK local time. The focus of the episodes are going to be interviews, expeditions, the must-do adventures episodes and the occasional roadtrip too! So, if you have any of those stories to share, or fancy yourself an adventure expert in a place not yet covered, then please get in touch on btmtravelpod@gmail.com

There's a load of other updates that have happened or are yet to happen too, which I'm really excited about! So much is going on behind the scenes with some great sponsorships and offers for you all coming up, but as far as you're all concerned here are a few bits and bobs.

I want to hear more from you all, but I'll get on to that in a second. Firstly, I've gone through the website and, at time of recording, I have written a blog for nearly every single podcast uploaded with a few left to finish.

We have official merchandise from T-Shirts to travel mugs if you want to get snazzy stuff. But, if you really want to support the show and get some benefits in return, I've revamped the Patreon site with three affordable tiers. Go and check them out and see what you think!

Like I said, I want to hear from you all, and you can do that in a couple of ways. Please get in touch either on Instagram or on email (btmtravelpod@gmail.com) and just chat. Let me know where you're from, what kind of travels and adventures you've done! Ask me your questions. Let me know what countries, expeditions, or people you'd love to see on the podcast too and I'll see what I can do!

You never know, I might read it out on the following week's podcast.

Lastly, I just really wanted to thank all of you for listening and for sharing with your friends. Please keep doing that to help us grow! On Friday it is the 75th episode and it's just crazy to think that after starting in April with a really budget microphone, no music or editing and no clue what I'm doing! Now, we've got a better microphone, great music by Ali Finneran… and still no clue what I'm doing!

But seriously, thank you all so much for your attention. It really means so much!

Join in with the community. Instagram/Twitter/Facebook and our new Facebook Page to share your own photos and videos here. Let me hear from your stories and questions on bmtravelpod@gmail.com, and I'll see you in the next episode!

Stacia, from Stumble Safari, was in Ecuador for a month, and in her own words "it was not nearly enough time". There is so much to do there, and she takes us through the highlights of her trip - from volunteering veterinary work in the jungle to bridge jumping in Baños, and everything in between.

What was paramount in our discussion before recording was just how much there is to do in Ecuador. Hear the episode to find out more.

Sleeping under the stars every night, paddling through multiple rapids a day and taking in the Grand Canyon through out. Doesn't sound bad does it?

Peter joins us talk about his 14 day adventure paddling through this National Park.

Recording at 7am my time, and coming from Hobart, Tasmania, Peter starts off talking about his background. Peter has been a paddler all of his life.

Learning at school doing slalom canoeing, Peter then competed internationally in his twenties, finishing his competitive career at 32, and competed at the Olympics in Barcelona.

Since then, he has done a lot of coaching and club based activities, moving to Tasmania for the rapids, away from the city.

This isn't something he just decided to do one day though.

You paddle the Grand Canyon between two dams over two nights, and go through 200 rapids across this time!

Listen on as Peter discusses his time staring at the most beautiful night skies and paddles through the Grand Canyon.

If you started your career as a photographer, would you ever imagine you would find yourself in the Pakistani Karakoram, photographing glaciers, projects and mountain climbing? This episode brings together some of your main interests: mountains, glaciers, science, and expeditions.

Hear how Tim and the team lived in isolation on the glacier for 2.5 months, measuring the glacier's movement, and making a first climb attempt on Yukshin Gardan Sar (7530m).

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

Before We Start

Before we get into the episode, I want to mention the sponsor for this one: Sidetracked Magazine. Sidetracked is dedicated to adventurous storytelling at it's very best. They use stunning imagery and personal stories from expeditions and journeys from around the globe, and you can tell!

If you are one of the few who haven't heard of them... what are you doing?!

Getting To The Glacier

Tim Taylor comes back for a second episode to chat about the Karakoram Anomaly Project. Previously, we interviewed Tim on his background and career. But he's not just a photographer, which makes him perfect for projects like these. Alongside his fantastic photography, Tim is also a Royal Marine Reservist and mountain climber, who had not long returned from the Himalayas before getting on board with the Karakoram Anomaly Project.

Tim starts by describing the beautiful yet baron scenery you find in the Karakoram. The journey in was also a bit shaky, narrowly avoiding a flash flood on the way.

The Karakoram Anomaly

The project was a mission to investigate a little known but deadly hazard unique to regions with big glaciers. Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOFs), or 'inland tsunamis' as they are known, was the potential threat and occurs when an ice dam containing a glacial lake breaches. The subsequent surge of water rushes downstream, destroying anything in its path. It is thought that over 80,000 people in the Karakoram are at risk from glacial lake outburst floods.

The Anomaly actually comes from what the glacier itself appeared to be doing. Satellite data looked like they could be growing in length, but unsure whether it was stretching or gaining volume. This was what caused the concern; if it was stretching, then the ice dam cold already be building glacial lake water behind it!

We talk about the floods that had occurred already from this glacier, referencing an article his friend did with UK Climbing. The glacier has the potential to do a lot of damage, which made the work the team did here even more paramount.

But this type of weather seems to be the norm here. Just 4 hours after a huge landslide, Tim remarked how they had already opened the road again. Good to go! The journey and roadtrip to the Yukshin Glacier itself was enough of an expedition; at that point it would have made for an epic story back home.

Hear more about this fascinating and captivating project in the podcast below! To top it off, hear how the team got stuck in a storm while attempting a first climb on Yukshin Garden Sar

We have covered the Pakistani Karakoram before on the show, but this episode was such a pleasure to record and learn and dream.

The Canadian Rockies are one of the gems of the world. Covered in beautiful mountains, alpine lakes, glaciers, and forests this region of the world attracts most of the outdoor community.

Having covered The Dolomites beforehand, Marta from In A Faraway Land joins us to talk through some must-do adventures in the Canadian Rockies.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa! (“Alexa, play Between The Mountains Travel Podcast!”).

You Can Check-Out Any Time You Like, But You Can Never Leave

Marta lived in the Canadian Rockies for 15 months on a working holiday visa. With the plan to drive the whole country East to West, Marta found herself instead spending the entire 15 months in the Canadian Rockies and British Columbia.

There is so much to see and do, it's hard not to be willingly trapped there! Read on and listen to the podcast to hear the places you should go to in addition to Banff and Jasper National Parks.

An Epic Roadtrip

Marta kicks off the podcast and must-do adventures for the Canadian Rockies with an epic roadtrip. You can tailor it to meet you requirements, but if you check out the link you can see for yourself just how incredible it is. Or, check out her other roadtrip itinerary if you're coming in from the West.

Marta's experience and knowledge shines straight away. Talking through the roadtrip, she details the fantastic locations and lakes to stop off at for some well-earned breaks along the way. Listen out for how to see the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies too!

Don't Waste Your Time In Calgary

Okay, before you jump on us, hear us out. This has nothing to do with Calgary, and everything to do with the Canadian Rockies. There is so much to do and beauty to see that Marta encourages you to get out of this beautiful and scenic city, and reach the mountains yourself.

Kananaskis is the first place she recommends to reach, and oh-man is it full of adventure and beauty! Listen on to find out more or click here!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWlO6dwD3Dv/

The Views To Effort Ratio

Going in to the first recommended day hike, Marta discusses Smutwood Peak (2693m/8835ft) and how fantastic it is. You can click on her article or use many apps to get there; it's going to be hard to find it on traditional maps. Dodging the grizzly bears and steep drops, Marta says that seeing sunrise from this spot was one of her favourite moments in the Canadian Rockies!

Ha Ling Peak is up next. Standing at 2407m/7897ft, this is a great peak for newer walkers who want stunning scenery and views. Closed for two seasons to be made safer, it is now a well established route. But, leave early! The trail has naturally become popular following the improvements.

Pocaterra Ridge and Tent Ridge are some of her favourites, too. It was here that Marta claimed that anything to do with ridges tends to have the best views-to-effort ratio. A fantastic way to put it, especially for all of you photographers out there. A funny thing to consider but a brilliant tool for holidays or more enjoyable days out.

One interesting thing, amongst many, is that Marta went in June. Being new, she describes the action as stubborn - willing the summer to be there. She could not have been more wrong. It appears summer only comes for one month in the Canadian Rockies, and June is not then. If you are going at a similar time, bring gaiters, ice axe, crampons. Pocaterra is beautiful for the high altitude, views of remote areas and hiking between three peaks.

But, that being said, the Canadian Rockies do require effort!

Multi-Day Hikes

Following this, we talk about backpacking and multi-day hikes in the Canadian Rockies. Detailing some of her favourites, Marta goes in to great depth, detailing the ins-and-outs. For more information, listen on and check out her own travel writing on it here.

In A Faraway Land

Marta runs the incredibly successful travel blog In A Faraway Land. Specifically, her Canadian Rockies section is full of roadtrips, hikes, backpacking, and photography guides.

It doesn't stop there though. Marta covers a wide range of locations, all of which you are sure to love, with more being added along the way! Check out her website here, or her Instagram here.

Cory and Lianne spent some incredible time on a full 30 day visa in Sri Lanka. They explored the island and had some fantastic experiences on the island. Such a pleasure to have them on!

In the middle of a long trip, with Nepal and India being a main focus, they decided to take a slower paced trip to Sri Lanka.

Chatting Through The Highlights

A month long spent anywhere is so much for one podcast. So, as hard as it is, they identify some of the key highlights and chat through.

Arriving into Columbo, they comment how the city doesn't feel so overwhelming, with some modern vibes. But, it's not long before they head straight over to their first National Park.

There is an abundance of wildlife on this island from elephants to leopards, and they even have an encounter with an elephant which you'll want to listen out for!

"22 National Parks on this tiny little island, and they're all just so incredible!"

Forever Break

Cory and Lianne were such a pleasure to have on the show. Chatting about hiking, wildlife, National Parks and more was a brilliant way to spend some time before they shot off on a kayaking trip!

Make sure you check out their podcast too!

I want to listen, now!

There were a couple of signal bits then snuck in, thanks lockdown! I hope you can forgive me for not getting those chopped out!

Interviewing people is one of my greatest pleasure. One thing about it, is that no matter how much I do or don't research, each individual can answer so uniquely. Something that kept recurring in this interview with Caroline George was the topic of 'adaptability' and how use a tool it is for getting through expeditions, climbing mountains, and life.

Competing in the Ice Climbing World Cup and also a member of the International Federation Of Mountain Guides Association, Caroline has climbed some of the toughest routes across the world. Places from Norway, to Iceland, to the Canadian Rockies, to Alberta, to the Alps and to Antarctica and so much more. Coming from a small ski village in the Swiss Alps and now an established climber, guide, and athlete, Caroline's experience comes in vast amounts from ski mountaineering to rock and ice climbing.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa! ("Alexa, play Between The Mountains Travel Podcast!")

Adaptability

We start off the podcast and immediately begin to talk about adaptation. Caroline's Mother recently passed away and it's on the forefront of her world lens, naturally. Alongside this, Caroline has also had a long career before becoming a parent, and now afterwards too. With this challenge alone - something many of us will face - are the changes that come with being a parent.

It doesn't end. You just adapt.

Caroline is one of many parents who takes it upon herself to show her child how to live, and not just tell them. It's so vital to provide them with memories and experiences that they feel and will last forever. Something I'm sure so many of us can agree on; I personally remember many more experiences than I do specific toys I liked.

Adapting is such a key to success in life. The opportunity to do so will hit all of us so many times in life. You can either take the opportunity and grow with it, or stay still and expire.

An Expedition Leader

Caroline also talks about leading people of all ages. From her new project taking kids rock climbing to leading adults up mountains. We talk about the different stages of team development and draw analogies to children brushing their teeth. I promise it makes sense in the episode!

What really struck me was her method of dealing with challenging leadership situations. Avoiding an 'Ask, Tell, Yell' approach, Caroline asks meaningful questions to her group so that they can find the correct answer themselves, rather than be told.

Caroline doesn't just have a wealth of knowledge, but she has also overcome so much. In her early days, there were many who tried to put labels on her and tell her that she couldn't be a mountain guide because she was a woman.

So, in the best way possible, Caroline ignored them and has let her results show - and, boy, do they show! Having climbed, competed, and led across the world, she is one of few people who can compare from first hand experience climbing in Ethiopia to Antarctica! Listen on to find out her answer!

Unconditional Acceptance

Towards the end of our time talking, Caroline talks about 'Unconditional Acceptance'. In her words, it is the ultimate adaptability to any situation you may not want. It's about making the best and learning from it. If you can accept challenges and changes unconditionally, you will reduce your suffering of an experience.

It's relatable to our travel and expeditions. We all go on adventures to have an experience and be pushed beyond the comfort zone. It's beyond that zone that we develop, and if you can accept unconditionally and not always want different you can grow and enjoy and build for next time.

Your Dose Of Positivity

What this episode with Caroline provided, for me at least, was tales of adventure mixed with positive and driven language. A conversation where you can jump climbing mountains, to favourite regions, to overcoming challenges, to getting the most out of life is always a fantastic one.

You can learn more about what Caroline does here and for more frequent update, you can follow her Instagram here. In addition, scroll down to listen to the podcast, and watch her featured video with Eddie Bauer.

Ryan's travel knowledge and experience far exceeds my own. Running the Travel With Cooky blog, he returns to the show to talk about his time and itinerary in Vietnam.

We discuss Hanoi, Halong Bay, the Hai Van Pass, Ho Chi Minh City and more! Don't forget to click the links to read more directly on Travel With Cooky.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

From North To South

Ryan kicks off talking about his reasons to go there. Alongside scenery and culture, he also recalls watching the Top Gear episode where they drive in Vietnam.

What is fantastic about Ryan is the knowledge he brings. Delivered alongside his character, Ryan details how best to fly to Vietnam (I'll give you a clue, don't fly there... see what I mean here!).

Before you know it, Ryan is chatting through his itinerary. You'll have no problem visualising yourself walking down their very busy roads. Specifically, you will be ready to turn into and become a moped yourself just to simply cross a road!

Ryan's itinerary from North to South sounds like a dream, and I know a couple of people who have done it this way. Starting in the colder regions by the mountains, with the option for the Ha Giang Loop, and heading down, following the gorgeous coastline to Ho Chi Minh City.

Ryan describes the culture shocks, the landscape and officially declares Vietnam as having the best food - and it's cheap for Western currency too!

Travel With Cooky - More Than Anecdotes

Ryan runs the Travel With Cooky blog. It is full of fantastic stories of his travels.

But what Ryan offers that I rarely see elsewhere is the extra mile to help you, the reader. He details his research, how he gets places, how to save money, the best places to go...

If that wasn't enough, he also features discounts for you through his affiliates and guest bloggers to add a different style and corner of the planet to his site, like the article I wrote.

Have a scroll of his articles on Vietnam while listening if you like, like his Hanoi one and Halong Bay one.

Have you ever had a crazy vision that just seemed perhaps too funny to actually do, or you never get round to doing it?

Covering the house in Christmas lights? Hiking a mountain in a onesie? How about trekking a Christmas tree 13km into the Norwegian mountains for a photo that you have envisioned.

Well, Falke did just that.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

A Yearly Tradition

Falke's tradition starts with a popular hike: Kjeragbolten. He managed to trek his way there through the snow and ice for his first Christmas Tree photoshoot. His want for adventure and doing something new and not seen before comes from within his passion for photography.

Falke had even planned to do the mighty Preikestolen, but someone managed to get there before him in 2018. Since then, he has always been one step ahead - and last year he managed to get the Christmas Tree to Trolltunga! This year? Well, you'll have to follow him on Facebook or Instagram to find out!

Heading Into The Storm

Falke details the kit you need to bring for this. Trolltunga is a fantastic hike. You can read more about this for a normal setting here. I wrote an article for Travel With Cooky all about Taking On Trolltunga (includes the YouTube video!).

For this, however, things were a little different. During the hiking season and autumn you can do this in a day. For Falke, this was a multi-day expedition; 2 days out, and then waiting to set the tree up (scroll down to see video of high winds!).

Trolltunga is on the edge of the Hardangervidda. In an incredible way, it essentially creates its own wind. Trolltunga sits down hill from the plateau, which means it can build to some huge intensity. Watching the footage make me realise just how lucky I was with my conditions for the hike.

In true expedition format, Falke conducted some great research: check weather forecasts, chatting to local mountain rescue who know the terrain. He needed the snow to pull the tree on the sled. It's a different expedition altogether if he had to carry all of his kit on his back.

Heading out to Odda and up to Skjeggedal the snow looked great... but the weather was taking a turn for the worse (remember that video I said to scroll to?).

After getting a snowmobile ride to the top of the first hairpins, Falke and his friend got ready, and set out to Trolltunga.

The Roof Of The Western Hemisphere

Aconcagua reaches 6,962m into the sky. Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in the Western hemisphere, and on the bucket list for many. For Alex, it was on his too. While in Argentina, he took the opportunity to head out and climb this peak. The episode includes brilliant information on permits, location, gear, and also on some smaller hikes before climbing the big one itself.

Fantastic Foundations

Alex bases himself in Wales where he has started his climbing career. Before that, he has been working 8 years in the outdoor industry. His experience includes being dropped off for an expedition in Svalbard - and it was this that encouraged him to organise things himself.

Alex then organised his time to spend 6 months backpacking in Chile and Argentina, with the focus of reaching the highest point in the western hemisphere.

Reaching The Roof

Hear in this episode how Alex details getting the permit and got to the mountain. There are two routes to head to the summit: The Normal Route and The Vacas (Valley) Route.

In this episode we discuss the Normal Route; it's better to have more people around when doing it solo... and the permit is cheaper!

Having done smaller hikes in the region, Alex was already starting to feel acclimatised. Listen to the podcast to hear where, and find out why this came in incredibly useful!

Alex spent a week hiking in the area before heading to Aconcagua, reaching 5954m as a highest point. With Aconcagua literally in sight, temptation was enough, and Alex headed the base camp.

Olympic National Park is a gem of the Pacific Northwest Region. Scattered with mountains, forests and wildlife, hear Melissa's anecdotes and information on Olympic National Park.

The Tip Of The US

Olympic National Park takes you to the most North Western tip of the lower 48 states - even giving you some Canadian signal at one point!

Flying into Seattle, you're going to need a car. It's quite the roadtrip (make sure you have the essentials with you!) to get to the first spot in this million-acre Park!

As we move through the podcast, or if you want more detail, please check out Melissa's own blog on the park with her '10 Best Things To Do' in Olympic National Park.

Hurricane Ridge is the first sport on her itinerary. This is a beautiful spot to take in the expansive mountains, maybe even a chance of seeing some inverse clouds! Well worth the slight diversion.

Lake Crescent is the next stop over with beautiful views and moody weather. Afterwards, you can stop off at two great hikes. Hear in the podcast for more details, one of them is a real thigh burner! Or, remember to check out Melissa's article for written details (it includes Google Maps!).

The PNW National Parks

Inviting Melissa on to talk about Olympic National Park was a real pleasure. That whole region of the US is filled with such enticing views, scenery and wildlife.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out Melissa's session on A Weekend In Mount Rainier National Park, her written words on it, or blog, or Instagram (where she is most active).

It was such a pleasure to sit back and hear Melissa's anecdotes and recommended itinerary. Especially recording at the start of the pandemic, it was great to be virtually whisked away to this gorgeous and stunning setting.

Melissa is also a fantastic person doing a lot for the outdoors community, climate, and social justice. Her interview with us is here and I recommend you check it out!

The Unanswered Question

How do you balance your passions with your profession... which may also be a passion of yours? Seeing Niki's updates and life as a medical student mixed with rock climbing caught my attention. Realising that there was more to this situation than the sport itself, we decided to do take a dive in to Niki's background.

The Importance Of Getting Outdoors

Rock climbing for Niki is her form of active meditation. You are focussed on your next move, everything else disappears.

Chatting through different types, Niki explains how she partakes in bouldering and sport climbing. This takes you from small walls doing complex manoeuvres with nothing but a crash mat underneath you, to technical rope work up steep cliff edges.

"When you're on the wall, everything in your mind disappears and nothing else really matters except your next move."

Even if your sport isn't your form of meditation, de-stressing should still be a priority of all of ours.

For Niki, she is a medical student working through a pandemic. We chat about trying to get out and decompress in the outdoors, especially in a time where we have to respect social distancing at time of recording.

The outdoors can find you some peace and rid your anxiety. Even if - as Niki states - staying indoors is seeing our muscle replaced with banana bread, you can still make time to do what you can and stay local. Whether you're in a pandemic or not, this is always a fantastic option if you can't reach your ideal place.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CB9DKC9jGuG/ Bouldering At Pirates Cove

"It's Like Walking On A Tight Rope"

Very quickly, we start the direct question of balance. Everyone faces this issue to different degrees, and I've avoided for the most part the topic; you can never truly balance everything. Graham Zimmerman (a previous mountain climbing guest on our show) shows great understanding of this. So, with a guest who has two extremely time consuming elements in her life, I popped the question.

"They both take a lot of time and commitment, and they are both huge parts of my identity. I'm not ready to give up either one of them."

There's something I saw when in university. It was a triangle that showed three choices: social life, sleep, and studying. You had to pick two.

That theme seems to run throughout. Niki faces these same issues; her studies come first, and the other third of her time are for luxuries.

You know, little things like eating, sleeping and rock climbing.

For people like Niki, it is fantastic that a hobby and sport involves others so much - at least that ticks a socialising box!

Adapt Or Die

It's something you hear from motivational speakers: adapt or die. Getting out in to nature and the outdoors is the most satisfying from of rock climbing. In Niki's case, she may not be able to get outdoors, but the gym is a quick solution that involves very little set up and travel time in comparison.

We can all learn something from this. Don't give up too easily on a passion, there is always a way to keep something flowing. The bad times are rarely permanent; a phase that will pass.

For another half an hour we carry on talking. Hear about different ideal places to climb, her travel history, medical missions, mental health, discipline cross overs, and music!

You can follow Niki's journeys and updates here

An Inspirational And Eclectic Background

Lotta is a truly inspirational woman who you certainly can’t place into one category - and for good reason. Lotta has a masters degree in economics and volunteers. Having recently completed a 24 hour endurance challenge and returned from Lofoten, Lotta sat down for an interview with us to talk about mountains and more.

In 2013 she was crowned Miss Finland and while continuing with modelling and entertainment work is now a mountaineer having scaled mountains such as G2, Mont Blanc, Gran Paradiso, Broad Peak, West Spanish Peak, Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua... and despite all of these and more her Mum still calls it hiking!

Kicking the interview off, we talk about training in the high mountains of Colorado to the lower altitudes of Finland. Lotta sticks to a hard regime of training and stays disciplined to keep that up, while keeping her other business in entertainment functioning.

Growing up in Ethiopia surrounded by the mountains there, she recalls how the culture and landscape impacted her. When flying past Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) as a kid she remembers just thinking to herself "I'm going to climb that one day". You either that want to climb in your, or you don't, and I agree.

The Feeling Of The Mountains

You can train as much as you like, but when you actually reach where you've been planning to go - in this case the high mountains and the Karakoram - the feeling is incredible.

The Karakoram holds a special place in Lotta's heart, and is sorely missed as we go through the pandemic lockdown that is the year 2020. Starting from camp early each day and carrying half your weight on your back, putting one foot in front of the other.

It's rewarding and her decision to be completely natural on the mountains (carry her own kit, doesn't use supplemental oxygen) has not only been trained in to her by Don Bowie, but is supported by her body's clear natural ability to deal with altitude well. It's like she has hit the ground running.

A Passion for Climbing

Lotta's drive and motivation is paramount in everything she does, which you can follow along with her Instagram. Throughout her entertainment and modelling career, Lotta has kept up her passions and now she is focussing on them even more.

Although currently back in Finland, training with Don Bowie in Colorado has only strengthened this. It's one thing to enjoy getting out of your comfort zone, but when your trainer says you're not in discomfort if you enjoy it, you know you're in it to get the results.

It is not just a passion for the mountains you need though; you need the mindset too. We explore that in some depth as we discuss what it takes to understand that not coming home at all is the only true failure, getting to the summit isn't everything, and more.

I've often thought that the mountains - and travel in general - helps one to become more appreciative. Those huge chunks of rock being pushed over millions of years by tectonic plates, growing further into the sky can provide you with some perspective. Your problems, more often than not, really aren't worth worrying about. Lotta seems have this appreciation too as she discusses some of the Ethiopian people. She calls those trying to provide for their families as warriors, and contrasts this to typical Western culture where so many are upset when they don't have the newest 'thing'.

You go back to basics in the mountains.

Hearing from Ethiopia to Lapland, Colorado to the Karakoram, it was a pleasure to have Lotta on the show. Hear more about her history and explore her career and passions further with the podcast.

The Dolomites A lot of people’s first view of the Dolomites might be that classic over the shoulder shot, over and along rising grass plain to a 3 peak mountain stood in front. Marta’s was too, and from there she dedicated time to explore the region.

In this episode we welcome Marta from In A Far Away Land. Marta is someone who has had a fantastic amount of experience in the Dolomites, and a perfect suggestion for the podcast from previous guest Kate Fletcher (from Bags Always Packed).

Kicking the episode off, Marta goes over some tips and general advice, including to book the mountain huts in advance. Later on, she also advises to take a map with you and advises of the best time to visit – and the busiest!

Hiking The Dolomites First off, we discuss two hikes in the region; a day hike and a multi-day hike. But, Marta quickly explains how there are so many that are so beautiful; what are her favourite ones today, could be replaced by others the next day as she recalls stunning memories.

We go over in detail what to expect, where to stay and what we’ll be seeing.

Cable To The Top The Via Ferratas are what grab my attention though. With different skill levels, and approximately 700 in the region, narrowing these down to favourites are hard.

Marta has done at time of writing about 60 of them, and is happy to share three: a beginner, intermediate and advanced route.

What comes next, as you would expect from a travel blogger, is fantastic information on the different ways to reach the start points, what to expect, the kit you’ll need… the information goes on.

Beautiful Budapest Budapest has been a on my list for a long time now. It seems to be a haven for travellers young and old. Interrailing through Europe, cruising the River Danube or even just there for a stag do.

Budapest has so much to offer though, so last year I booked my trip with my friend to go. A year later, this may well need to be delayed.

A 5-Day Itinerary  Which makes it all the sweeter that Ryan from Travel With Cooky came on the show to talk about his time spent there and photography. Ryan talks about all Budapest has to offer; cathedrals, ruin bars, and New Years Eve, and more over his 5 day itinerary.

As a travel blogger, Ryan leaks helpful and fantastic detail out of him throughout the episode. He discusses some tips along the way, how to get to Budapest, and good places to stay.

Travel With Cooky  Ryan's blog is incredibly helpful. It provides some of the best travel info, product reviews and discount hacks going. If you don't like that, then he also does quizzes! Check it out here: https://travelwithcooky.com/

Ryan also solo-travels mostly, so be sure to subscribe to his mailing list if you do too to get your top-tips and articles sent straight to your inbox.

Placing learning from others and producing work as a priority on expeditions, Tim’s foundations began in 2007 when joining the Royal Marines Reserves. Since then his expedition and photography career has taken him to beautiful and exciting places from bordering Taliban territory in Pakistan to entering the Patagonia Adventure Race. He has won multiple awards and is a member of the Royal Geographical Society and more, so it is a huge pleasure to have Tim on.

Where Do We Begin?  Taking a step to move out of your life’s “groove”, and away from negativity and patterns that you don’t like takes a lot of strength, and Tim has done just that. Moving away from the company car life, Tim re-focused his efforts into his passions and it has paid off tenfold.

“I think [training with the Royal Marines] allows you to suffer – and enjoy it!”

Opening with a question of mindset from his military training, we talk about his experience in depth. From the Himalayas, the Karakoram, climbing Denali, photography in the mountains, mindset, military training and more.

Grab your snacks and strap in for an epic adventure in Patagonia. In this episode, TJ goes over his epic and adventurous time ski mountaineering across Patagonia.

Living out of a van, dodgy interactions with mafia-types, epic slopes, perfect conditions, and not-so-perfect conditions are all to hear in this captivating episode with TJ.

It's such a pleasure to welcome TJ David back to the show to chat about his time ski-mountaineering in the region. If you haven't heard our interview with him from May, be sure to check it out

An Eye-Opening Expedition

Talking about his first of multiple trips to Patagonia, he describes the region as beautiful yet challenging (so basically, ideal, right?!). Patagonia definitely threw some hurdles at TJ while he was pursing his backcountry ski mountaineering there. But, as with all fantastic places, it gave back too.

Utilising the Van Life livelihood, TJ and his friend explored the region over three weeks. If you want to follow along with TJ as he talks about his time there, then check out his own articles here: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.

Escaping The Summer

"Escaping The Summer" is a line that you will probably only ever hardcore skiers say. But, escape the summer is what TJ did. As the season closed off in the Northern Hemisphere, TJ got on a plane and headed to the other end of the world to Ski.

It helps too when you have good company. TJ was accompanied in this less-than-ideal van by his friend, who describes as being incredibly laid back, with the skill level of a professional skier. Perfect!

With the foundations set, it was time to embark on their Van Life Expedition.

Arriving at their first location, TJ describes the scenery as breath-taking! With some high and some lows, the story unfolds on the general description of utterly beautiful. Starting the journey with a fake travel-agents, and ending it ski the most perfect day and conditions, TJ will captivate and fascinate you with this expedition.

Listen on in the podcast as TJ describes and talks through his epic and beautiful time ski mountaineering in Patagonia!

TJ David – More Than Just Ski Mountaineering

TJ asks his clients a lot about their “WHY”‘s.

You can check out his coaching here, his Instagram here, and more information on himself here

Mount Rainier National Park - and the mountain itself for that matter - cover the internet with its wonderful scenery and that huge Mount Rainier dominating every shot.

Melissa - otherwise known as Miss Rover - comes on the show to tell us about her time and a recommended itinerary at Mount Rainier National Park.

If you haven't already heard her interview from the end of June, I recommend you check that out. Melissa is a brilliantly experienced individual in travel, and I really hope you enjoy the episode that includes some of the best viewpoints in the park!

Mount Rainier National Park

Melissa has gone multiple times in multiple seasons, and you can hear why. It's popular for a reason, and not just Mount Rainier. There are plenty of different mountains in the area.

Melissa has her own blog on the location too, which you can read along with the podcast or just read on its own; its bloody good!

Listening to Melissa talk about the views, hikes and routes and just her passion for the area is inspiring. The part I enjoyed most is where Melissa talks about doing an overnight hike on part of a massive 96 mile trail, taking you to a height of 25,000 feet.

Miss Rover

Melissa is a brilliant individual, who does so much for the outdoor community, climate, and more recently social justice alongside the Black Lives Matter movement.

Graham's dream to climb in the Pakistani Karakoram starts as a kid. After reading about it and seeing the incredible photos, it captured his attention immediately. But, perhaps like a lot of people's dreams sadly, he thought it may never be achievable to climb there.

Fast forward to 2020, Graham joins the podcast to talk about his career and climbing experience in the Karakoram. Through hard-work and drive, he has now taken part in multiple expeditions there, experiencing the fantastic community and brilliant mountains first hand.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

One Of The Most Special Places On The Planet

The Karakoram is a mountain range crossing India, China, Pakistan, and even as far as Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Some of the highest mountains in the world reside there, including K2 and other 8000m peaks.

What makes this place special for a climber, as Graham describes, is that most of the rock there is Granite or Granitoid; one of the best rocks for climbing on. Think about El Capitan, or the Mont Blanc Massif.

What comes with this strong and robust rock are some very steep and tall mountains. This is where Graham comes in!

It's been at the forefront of his mind as a kid. Casting his thoughts back to High School, it was a National Geographic article and photos of some of the bigger peaks that sparked the fire for the Karakoram. But, Graham took a humbling and modest approach and just remained in total awe of the mountain ranges. He didn't consider whether he should or shouldn't climb these mountains, but he instead grew a complete appreciate for the range and detail.

Reaching The Karakoram

Before Graham reached the Karakoram, there were a few hurdles. When he first initially was able to go, he first wasn't able to attain a permit in 2012, which was then followed unfortunately by Nanga Parbat massacre in 2013.

So, when they opportunity arose again, there was much convincing to be done. Not only Graham's wife and Mum, but also Graham himself. Graham is widely renowned for his safe and expert climbing across the world. That extends to, quite obviously, potential terrorist attacks.

There's also a lot of preparation both logistically and physically to be done. I cast the question further back and ask if there was a time during any of his climbing where he had ever put skills or ideas aside in case he was to reach the Karakoram.

Graham has worked hard at building progressions into his career. Breaking down his goals in to a step-by-step plan. With climbing in places like Alaska and Patagonia, he had a notion that he was making progress. Looking back, it seems obvious now that he was working towards the bigger mountains of the world.

But the other component, is that climbing is such a passion and just generally so fun for Graham that he'll find his skills and experience build and grow naturally anyway.

A perfect example of living in the moment.

Then, he has that conversation, and confirms to take part in his first expedition to the Pakistani Karakoram. To say he was excited is an understatement!

Listen to the podcast to hear more detail on Graham's passion and experience, training, gear, the the mountains themselves.

Graham is such a fascinating and fantastic individual. He has achieved so much, and is only growing his accomplishments as he continues to climb mountains and lead against climate change.

Based currently out of Oregon, and with nearly 2 decades of mountain climbing experience consisting of many first ascents, awards for excellence and New Zealand alpinist of the year, Graham is extremely established within the climbing and expedition community.

Graham Zimmerman is more than just an alpinist though.

Graham has a hydro glaciology degree which led him to work as a geo-physicist and search and rescue technician for many years. Now, climbing full time, this love has led him to not only continue to climb big mountains in awe of their beauty, but also give back and work with companies such as “Protect Our Winters” towards raising awareness and creating an impact towards climate change.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

An Award Winning Alpinist Starting at 15, Graham cut his teeth in the Southern Alps, New Zealand. Since then, Graham has gone on to climb in areas such as Alaska, Patagonia, the Pakistani Karakorum, Canadian Rockies, Himalayas, and Kyrgyzstan, always searching for that perfect route up the mountain.

Beginning the podcast, we chat about the differences between New Zealand and America. Starting off broadly, and then zeroing into the climbing aspect. Reflecting on his background, Graham talks about his goal to do high-end, technical routes that have never been done before on big mountains.

“One of my favourite things about climbing is we each get to choose how we get at it”, Graham says. “There are no rules in climbing besides be nice to the people around you and be nice to the environment. If you’re doing those two things you can climb however you want“. This came about because I mentioned his new route “The Indirect American“, and what his ‘why’s were for climbing new routes.

Describing Type 2 fun almost to the book, Graham describes how falling in love with wild places, heavy exertion, and a sense of exploration drive his passion and achievements for climbing new routes.

It is these reasons that have led Graham to win his most recent award: the Piolet d’Or, or the “gold medal of alpine climbing”, for his first ascent of Link Sar in Pakistan, alongside Chris Wright, Steve Swenson, and Mark Richey.

Telling Stories As An Imperfect Advocate For years, Graham travelled wherever he could to climb. Due to this, he often wrote off any capability of fighting climate change because of his carbon footprint.

Even if he thought he could, finding out how to go about raising awareness and creating change was proving difficult.

Enter Protect Our Winters, stage left.

Protect Our Winters essentially takes athletes and ‘weaponizes’ them to become climate activists. They provide all the information and tools for these athletes to tell and share their stories and become extremely effective in the climate policy space.

Since then, Graham has spent a lot of time lobbying in Washington D.C., lobbying in the state capital in Oregon, and presenting to thousands of people across the United States.

Discussions on climate tend to be extremely partisan and divided. It gets people’s back up, and, as Graham puts it, “once you get people feeling like they’re in a confrontation, they stop listening, and you stop being effective”.

What Graham and Protect Our Winters do, is use the tool and powers of telling stories to meet people in the muddle, and use the power of other’s people’s impact and perspectives to bring about change. It engages with our shared humanity, and brings about a connection on the issue.

“The difference between climate change and ducking out of high winds is that climate change is not something we can avoid”

Graham Zimmerman Graham is such a fascinating and fantastic individual. He has achieved so much, and is only growing his accomplishments as he continues to climb mountains and lead against climate change.

As the world globalises more and more, it seems harder and harder to find something that no-one has done before. Yet, they are still incredible adventurers, like Lucy Shepherd, who still manage to do so.

After having a more-than-dodgy experience with a Jaguar the last time she visited the jungle, Lucy returned to trek across the Kanuka Mountains.

Scratching That Itch

After her last time in the jungle, Lucy can't be blamed for swearing off ever returning again. The jungle is a place where everything is just designed to kill you.

As the years (and expeditions) went on, though, there was something missing.

Lucy was achieving so much; all of her adventure boxes were being ticked. Challenging? Check. Risky moments? Got 'em. Lots of these moments? Absolutely!

But, there was still something that wasn't quite testing her. It didn't take long for Lucy realised she had to go back to the jungle.

Finding Her 'Why's

In her interview, we spoke about balancing 'achievement' and 'escapism'. In Lucy's case, the latter comes before the former. While she had her 'escapism' reason to go, her partner pressed her - and with good reason, the last time she went to the jungle there was a rather uncomfortable experience with a jaguar.

Knowing that she wanted to head back to Guyana, Lucy started making a few phone calls and exploring her options. It was at this point she discovered the Kanukus. Despite attempts across the hard terrain, no-one was yet to complete crossing the region. With that, Lucy had her 'achievement' found, and got the planning in motion.

Listen to the podcast to find out more about Lucy's prep and expedition across the jungle!

Renee Roaming (or, Renee Hahnel to anyone outside the internet) has travelled to nearly 40 countries across 5 continents. She left speech therapy and took her photography to a full time level in 2016, alongside her husband Matthew. Together, they make a force to be reckoned with and Renee's hard graft, organisation, positivity and engagement with all of you lead her to continued success after success.

With a massively eclectic collection of locations from Alberta to the Dolomites, New Zealand to Kenya, the US National Parks to Peru, and more, Renee is able to give first hand and valuable experience of these places from her stunning photography, brilliant blogs and adventurous tales!

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains”, Ask Alexa, or read on below.

Falling In Love With America

Just for the moment, let's put Renee's fantastic travel experience to one side. We'll come back to it, I promise.

Renee is Australian and grew up there. We talk fondly of her times spent growing up near Melbourne. Soon enough, Renee won the Green Card 'lottery'. She and Matthew backed their bags, and headed out.

When they first moved to the US, Renee and her husband Matthew wanted to be by mountains - and who can blame them? So, they moved to Colorado. The Colorado mountain ranges are amazing with hiking and life opportunities everywhere. But after completing this step in life, they decided to look elsewhere.

After reaching out further, they fell in love with Washington. The Pacific North West offers mountains, but forests and ocean too, and that really pulled them in - with similarities close to Australia (on paper!). Having places like Artist Point, Olympic National Park, and Mount Rainier National Park on your doorstep creates such fantastic levels of inspiration, and content too!

These are some pretty diverse and unique places - and feature on nearly everyone's travel bucket list.

Listen to the podcast to hear Renee's thoughts on Colorado, Washington, Seattle, and Melbourne. We even talk about roadtrip songs. Renee has a 24 hour+ playlist on Spotify, and we chat about the songs that played on her childhood roadtrips too.

Perfectly Placed

After comparing Melbourne to her new home of Seattle, I ask her the obvious question: "How much did Mount Rainier influence your decision to move to Seattle?".

Now obviously, this isn't the only reason. But, the mountains are a source of inspiration for millions of people. With a background like Renee's, I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to live in Washington, in the progressive city of Seattle, surrounded by some of the best nature on this planet.

All About Travel, Adventure And Photography

Throughout the whole podcast we discuss everything travel. We talk about balancing photography and living in the moment. We talk about tapping into your creative side, and adventures in Alaska.

Renee isn't just a Washington-based photographer. Her experience for her career and herself comes from across the globe. From French Polynesia, to New Zealand, to Kenya and more, Renee has grown to have such a fascinating view on life, travel, and photography.

After discussing backpacking in South America, adventures in Australia, exploring America, and more, we discuss one moment that Renee would love to relive.

Roaming America

One of the biggest projects that Renee undertook with her husband Matthew was visiting all of the 59 (at the time) US National Parks. Mostly living the Van Life the whole way through, they performed this project for their client in one go.

We discuss in the podcast some of the behind the scenes. From Type 2 fun, to discussing typical days, and more. Hear Renee discuss some of the hard work that went into this brilliant project.

Days on this project looked like either driving for 9+ hours between National Parks, or waking before sunrises and hiking and photographing until after sunset; which is hard work when you think about it!

From this trip, they created a coffee-table book featuring photography from all of the National Parks, anecdotes, suggested itineraries, best hikes, and key facts. I have the book myself and it really is so inspiring and high quality. Check it out here, or search for it on Amazon.

Renee Roaming

Interviewing Renee really was an absolute pleasure. Renee has such a fantastic view on travel, hard-work, and getting outdoors.

From photography tips to itineraries to backcountry camping, to her book ‘Roaming America’, Renee consistently aims to deliver value to her audience - and it really does show!

Make sure you listen to the podcast, and check out her blogs and content which is truly A-Class material.

Early Roots Melissa – or Miss Rover as she is now popularly known as – started in Michigan. With exposure to places like Niagra Falls as a kid, it’s no wonder she took a leap of faith as an adult. Packing her things and looking to escape into the world, Melissa took an epic roadtrip across the country and started travelling whilst working Occupational Therapist contracts.

Hear in this podcast how Melissa has gone on to achieve and explore so much. Find out more about her mindset, history and her reasons for continually travelling.

An Eclectic Background For those who don’t know, in her own words Melissa “dabbles in so much”. It’s hard to get a black and white description. Yet, it seems that she brings a well-needed positive outlook and take on everything she does. Coming from rural Michigan, Melissa has a Masters degree in Occupational therapy, a love of the outdoors and, arguably, a bigger love for conservation and protecting our nature.

Since, as she says, ‘escaping Michigan’, Melissa has spent 3 years in Seattle, 5 months in Alaska and 4 months ongoing in California. Quite an eclectic habitat resume! She has ticked 17 US National Parks off of her list to complete all of them and has been across the globe from Costa Rica to Thailand.

Hear in this interview how Melissa adapted to finding her true passions after already choosing a degree at 17. Melissa talks about her experience travelling across California, PNW, Alaska and more.

We talk about travelling solo, encouraging self-development through uncomfortable goals, doing more for conservation on our own trails and more!

Miss Rover Melissa is a brilliant individual, who does so much for the outdoor community, climate, and more recently social justice alongside the Black Lives Matter movement.

Our upbringing plays such a huge role in who we become. It can either push us to become the opposite, or encourage to continue on and flourish from it.

On this episode, we welcome Stevie G from Destinations Beyond Expectations podcast. His own show is so incredibly good, from fantastic guests, brilliant editing, and fascinating travel stories.

We chatted with Steve about his outdoors experience from hiking in the European Alps with family, to exploring his home state Florida, and further into the US itself such as Yellowstone National Park.

Students Of Travel A topic that strikes a chord with me is Stevie’s consistent remarks to ‘Students Of Travel’. A Student Of Travel is someone who learns, develops, and grows their knowledge and perception of the world through travel.

This is something so important to me, and I’m sure to you all. Similar to how I love the mountains and how they put things in to perspective, we can all learn something from culture, to interactions, to ways-of-life from travel.

We welcome Kate back to the show who spoke to us about Everest Base Camp. This time, she brings her first hand experience of Tonga to the show. An island located east of South East Asia and Australia, there's not much to be found on the internet. In this podcast, Kate shares so much great information, I know you'll enjoy it!

Every now and then in this podcasts, a guest describes a moment that takes me away and makes me forget I'm meant to be hosting a podcast! Just like her trek to EBC, she does it again when describing - get ready for this - swimming with whales! Listen out for it, there's a certain element that made it extra magical.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa! (“Alexa, play Between The Mountains Travel Podcast!”).

Not Much Info

One thing Kate often tries to do is complete these trips on a budget, and see how low she can get the price.

The logic was that the locals aren't exactly spending thousands to survive there, so let's get out on to the islands and live on the budget!

Although miles apart, this trip started off very similarly to her trip to Everest Base Camp. Kate knew that she wanted to go to some pacific islands, and Tonga had the cheapest flights! She had no expectations; only later found out that you can swim with humpback whales.

There really isn't much information on this country online. Kate has one of the most extensive articles and information for Tonga, which you can find here.

The Friendly Islands

Kate's first experience of how lovely and friendly this island is was actually in the airport in New Zealand. Waiting alongside the Tonga Rugby Team, a lady sat next to her asking why she was planning on going to Tonga. Replying that she just wanted to go to Tonga - no friends or family there - the lady warned her "just try not to get married!".

An odd thing to be told, but as Kate travelled this beautiful country it became so clear why the lady had said this. The people are truly incredible, running on 'island time' in their relaxed and stunning land. It can be so easy to just decide to settle there.

"If you need positivity, go to Tonga!"

Island Hopping Itinerary

As you would expect from a travel blogger, Kate holds back on no details, and provides brilliant information and visual language for her time here.

After realising that the copious amount of help she was being offered by the locals was genuine, Kate started to settle in to the country and its way of life.

Details on her blog and in the podcast is so much brilliant information and imagery. Kate has had some fantastic experiences here.

Lucy is an expedition leader with an incredible resume of journeys. Starting in Svalbard at 18, Lucy's highlights see her hiking in the Hardanger region of Norway and the Finnsmarkvidda Plateau in the arctic circle, and dove straight into the Amazon rainforest from University. In addition, she has mountaineered in Argentina and Tajikistan, scaled Denali, solo-hiked in Picos de Europa, led a team in the Patagonia Expedition Race and skied the Norwegian/Russian border alongside expeditions to Greenland.

Lucy has also been to the High Sierra mountains in America and the Kanuka Mountains in Guayana, which I am happy to say we will be going to into more depth in 2 separate episodes!

Exploring From A Young Age

As a kid and only child, Lucy spent a lot of her time outdoors, roping her friends into exploring the outdoors with her. IT was early experiences from her home to Scotland that set some incredible foundations for her thriving career undertaking expeditions.

Setting Up For Expeditions

One of the many topics we chat about is preparation for expeditions. As someone who climbs Mont Blanc just for practice, Lucy chats about the different ways she prepares for her expeditions. She highlights the need also for your mindset to be correct, and explains how this comes with time spent in preparing and gaining experience.

For me, the biggest form of this requirement for mindset is the jungle. We talk about the need for fantastic and well-disciplined personal admin. You need to be stringent and dedicated to survival there, as everything around you is essentially designed to kill you.

Balancing Achievement And Escapism

For Lucy, expeditions are exactly about this. When you escape from civilisation and push your own boundaries and edge out of your comfort zone, that is when you grow as a person. Lucy explains how it is absolutely about getting to the location and pushing yourself, but it's also about getting back!

"I love escaping into a world where I feel very privileged to be there"

Lucy Shepherd

Lucy is a fantastic, humble, modest, and experienced adventurer and it was a pleasure having her on the podcast.

We welcome Jamie and Skylar from Explorcation who took a cruise around the Caribbean and did something I haven’t seen before: used the cruise to rent cars on each island and carry out their own adventures, avoiding the coach excursions.

Hear their journey of island hopping in a big way, and making the use of their times there well. From hiking mountains to discovering secret beaches, read on and listen below!

Secret Beaches The first aspect that got my attention was the topic of secret beaches. I’m not much of a beach person myself, and it had never occurred to me to actually spend time researching quiet and ‘secret’ beaches before.

A big fan of secluded areas, I was keen to learn of the areas to avoid overcrowding. Listen on in the podcast to find out more.

Hiking In The Caribbean The second part to grab my attention was – of course – the hiking. There’s nothing huge in the way of altitude there, but you still get some epic hikes with stunning views.

Specifically, I really enjoyed their time chatting to me about St. Lucia. There are two really great peaks there, and they clearly had an amazing time.

Explorcation Jamie and Skylar have a brilliant blog going. Along with their blog here, they have really been grinding hard to deliver some quality YouTube content too.

Visiting Nepal is high on everyone’s bucket list, especially mountain lovers! In this episode, James details trekking on the Annapurna Circuit but also exploring Nepal. There is a brief mention of Everest Base Camp and an experience with altitude, but we explore EBC a bit further with Kate.

Listen on to hear about the Kophra Ridge circuit, an experience at Everest Base Camp, and his love end exploration of Nepal.

If you missed it, James also did an episode on India with us, check it out here.

The Kophra Ridge James straight away starts describing these beautiful lakes, with 7000m and 8000m peaks reflected in them.

As James details following the stunning scenery up, and a stairway that looks as long as the one in Lord Of The Rings, 800-2000 he details the elevation on the route.

Now, Everest Base Camp trek starts you at 2800m. This route to Annapurna, starts you at 800m. That’s some serious elevation. The stairs he just mentioned take you from 800m to 2000m in one go!

It is a fantastic way to test if you can make it, and is in fact the hardest day in his opinion.

Listen to the episode to find out more on the region and walk, and the difficulties that arise!

Backcountry camping is something that entices so many of us. In this episode, hear how Chloë Chapdelaine went out on her first backcountry camping trip.

Travelling to Jasper National Park, Chloë describes spontaneous trips, beautiful visuals, and a stunning trip overall.

If you missed Chloë's interview, read more and listen here.

A Quick Trip Packing A Punch

The trip to Spirit Island had already been postponed for Chloë beforehand. Travelling five hours out to location, she was called in to work last minute.

Determined to get out and do this, Chloë simply rescheduled.

Her friend Oscar had been keeping an eagle eye on the camp spots. They can get booked up quickly, and the moment one became available they jumped at the opportunity!

Spirit Island

It sounds like an incredible trip. Hear in this episode how Chloë and Oscar faced strong headwinds, canoeing across a lake, and heading out for golden hour early in the morning and catch sunrise.

Chloë Chapdelaine

A fantastic place to start with Chloë, other than her Instagram page, is with her blog which you can checkout here. She has wonderful insights and fantastic journeys. You can also check out her composing page we discussed by clicking here.

If you’re going to start anywhere, you have to read this humorous blog Chloë did on over-hearing people’s odd conversation on holiday.

You should also check out her shop. There’s some beauty products… but also some beloved adventure products for yourselves! Check it out here and bag yourself a bargain.

Chloë is a model, writer and content creator, journalist, photographer and adventurer from Calgary. Her career so far sees her modelling across North America, putting her thoughts down to paper, and getting out into adventures from Canada to Mexico to Europe.

Chloë has no problem finding beautiful spots to shoot at wherever she goes, and more often than not you can find them on her Instagram accompanied by a quick-wit pun followed by a level-headed discussion or opening up a little.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa! (“Alexa, play Between The Mountains Travel Podcast!”).

Keeping It Light-Hearted Starting the podcast off, we talk about the all important captions. One reason among many to follow Chloë on her Instagram is for the witty puns that caption her stunning photography.

But moving to recent shifts, I also ask her about the transition between Instagram and Tik-Tok. For all of you wanting to expand your personal brand, or just stay on top of social media, you are going to want to hear her input!

The Importance Of Journaling It’s almost like making the thought physical. I ask Chloë this question early on. She is a brilliant writer, but also journals for her own headspace. By writing, as described by Chloë, it is a way of taking that thought or weight in your mind, and removing it to paper.

It works in both ways. You can be experiencing something truly beautiful, and by journaling it the moment becomes timeless. It can re-spark those memories and feelings you had.

“Something about that process is super-therapeutic to me”

In return, it also helps the darker times. Chloë talks about how negative times and thoughts can be removed by simply transferring them to paper.

The Influence Of Alberta In just a 45 minute drive, Chloë can be surrounded in some of the most beautiful setting this world has to offer. Hear how the Alberta mountains influence her writing. Chloë makes such fantastic use of her time. Knowing that in low or reflective moments she can spend 2 hours scrolling social media, she will often instead get in her car and drive to the mountains.

Sounds like heaven to me.

But she knows what it like to live without it. Chloë didn’t always live so close, and so that drive to experience the mountains and alpine lakes is so fresh in her mind every day, knowing how fortunate she is to live where she does!

“The World’s not all bad, but you need to recognise it’s you who can let the light in”

Chloë Chapdelaine A fantastic place to start with Chloë, other than her Instagram page, is with her blog which you can checkout here. She has wonderful insights and fantastic journeys. You can also check out her composing page we discussed by clicking here.

The beautiful night sky, the people, and the landscape are just some of the major reasons to visit Tasmania. We touched upon it in our Australia Van Life episode. In this show we welcome Martina.

In true classic way, Martina saw Tasmania on a map and decided to go and visit. Finding new people to travel with, she embarked on an epic roadtrip!

We kick off the episode chatting about hiking, and it quickly becomes clear that this place is fantastic for laid back hill-walking, and strenuous but rewarding views.

But Martina also dives into the backcountry aspect. Discussing some of the best spots, she also sees the beautiful clear sky and the milky way!

21 beautiful days. That’s how long it took for Kate from Bags Always Packed to get to Everest Base Camp and back. What was incredible was how she did it. On a budget, last-minute, and solo.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

Trekking To Everest Base Camp Before we start, feel free to click here to access Kate’s blog on solo trekking to Everest Base Camp. It includes everything you need to know, so I highly recommend having a browse of that and more on her website.

What was fantastic about her trip, was the side-trip she took towards the end, and her finale. I’ll let you listen on, but it sounds just so stunning, and a perfect way to end her time there.

After seeing the cheapest tour priced at around $3000, she figured this was definitely outside of a backpacker’s budget.

So, her thoughts were that as she was exploring India and Nepal before this, she would meet a few others who wanted to take the pilgrimage. However, getting closer to the time frame there was still no-one headed that way. So, off Kate went by herself.

And what a brilliant decision that was.

I’ve spoken before how solo-travel is so important in regards to self-development and headspace. For Kate, she was already a strong and independent person, so heading out was no problem. You can hear this in how she tackled her trip to Tonga.

The challenge didn’t seem overly ridiculous to her, and was on her bucket list. So, confronting where to stay, budget, altitude and the dodgy-yet-probably-fine flights to the start point, Kate cracked on and managed to complete the journey.

Hear in this podcast how she did it, the route she took and the people she eventually met. Finally, hear about her majestic end to a wonderful three weeks.

TJ David is a professional skier and endurance athlete residing in Colorado. His experience has seen him mountaineering skiing in Chamonix, kayaking in Colorado and competing in several endurance challenges such as North Face Endurance Challenge and the Indian creek fifties.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

His skill and name has been slapped onto billboards, commercials and every major publication in the industry and he even finds time still to run his own company and maintain his clients. He has an incredibly humble and experienced view on things, and it’s my pleasure to have him on the show.

An Evolution From Childhood To Profession

TJ started skiing at a young age - 3 or 4 years old - in New Jersey. From that moment he has gone on to ski his whole life. Exposing himself to tough conditions as he grew older, his skill base grew from more local slopes, to now all over the world.

After going to college on the East Coast, TJ took a trip and went to Utah. It was here, that he got his first sponsorship and work opportunities. From here, everything grew. Now, he ski's full time, is an endurance trail runner, and runs his own coaching business

"Spending time outside... there are really strong links to an overall heightened state of being. The endorphins you get from being outside - the time spent out there - is really important for your mental health"

Balancing Capturing The Content And Living The Moment

For long term followers of TJ, you'll know that this used to be a big thing for him. But now, his way of living in the moment is more often than not just leaving the camera at home.

More recently, his content is more lifestyle (behind the scenes like cooking and coaching), or beautiful shots taken on his long runs.

Hear further how TJ directs his photographs, but also his thoughts on living in the moment and looking after your headspace.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B7ryXljHzC0/ This caption though...

Drawing Parallels Between Skiing And The Challenges Of Life Itself

In this interview, TJ describes this rather poetic comparison of life to the downhill. How working hard at something and pushing through tough times make it all so worth it in the end because of the hard work and the rewards.

Life is a lot like climbing and reaching the top. From taxes, to starting a company, to grizzing out a side hustle you do not enjoy to make your passions work.

"These struggles are also momentary. They're fleeting just like the good moments, so you try not to grasp on to them so much. Just to be aware that they are happening, and you are capable of moving beyond that".

TJ David - More Than Just Ski Mountaineering

TJ asks his clients a lot about their "WHY"'s. In the interview, I turned the question on to him.

There's is so much to this personal level of reasoning and spirit. But what TJ touches upon - which I think it silently very inspirational - is his love for the daily process of improving a little bit, every single day. Making those small steps that over time produce the big picture goal. Having that long-term goal.

What is your long-term goal?

TJ is an incredible individual, with so much to give. You can check out his coaching here, his Instagram here, and more information on himself here

Here is the second part! What a pleasure to have Outdoorlife Norway join me on this.

Personally, I have actually booked this hike with them already and now can't wait even more to do so. Hopefully the conditions will be stunning!

In November 2019 I hiked Preikestolen and it was just simply beautiful. I was planning on doing a podcast, but instead of waffling on I thought "why not invite the company on to chat through it?". That was a brilliant idea and it worked out.

Outdoorlife Norway (https://outdoorlifenorway.com/) were simply incredible in their service and knowledge to me and I highly recommend you check out their website and all the things they offer for your next visit to Norway.

I said this for the first episode, and I truly mean it: it's 10/10 from me. Besides, in November 2019 they picked me up right from the AirBNB and gave me coffee. Can't get much better than that!

The audio is much better in this episode, and I hope you enjoy it. If you do, please follow/subscribe and share with a friend or two.

A short introduction to our podcast

Liana, from @SeekingTheNow, is an incredible photographer and now mountaineer.

Hear in this episode how she got into mountaineering and discovered her passion for the mountains as we take a trip down memory lane, climbing Mount Baker, Washington.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains”! Or Ask Alexa!

https://www.instagram.com/p/CADsqSxHr_c/

An Epic Opener

I can relate hugely to Liana and I'm happily jealous of the mountaineering qualifications and experience she has gone on to get.

Finishing off her course, they had to climb Mount Baker. Liana talks us through the course with the Washington Alpine Club. Learning a fantastic skill base, they set off to the mountain to complete the course.

What is wholesome to hear is how her photography drive joined her on the course. While everyone was getting sleep for a summit push, Liana headed out for a spontaneous photoshoot with nature.

Chasing Your Dreams - And Catching Them

I think everyone can learn from Liana. This was terrifying to consider, but so exciting. What was originally a fear of climbing mountains, Liana took on the course she conquered it. She also continues to do so, and you can follow her on her Instagram

Starting from day hikes - as most mountaineers perhaps do - Liana took the course to go further, knowing the end goal was Mount Baker.

Liana asked herself what she would do and wanted to do, and went after it. In the process, she also developed an appreciate and love for her state, realising the beauty hours away from her. It sounds obvious, but perhaps so many of us can learn to look closer to home for natural wonder rather than the next country over and beyond.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_p6wOgHyN2/

Hear in this episode how Liana acted on her love for the mountains, and her story on climbing Mount Baker. Liana is also a fantastic, brilliant, and incredibly skilled photographer. Consider checking out her prints for your own home or office here

In our first interview episode, we welcome Jon Gupta from Mountain Expeditions. Jon's career has seen him swimming with turtles off the coast of Odisha, India, competing in the 430-Yukon Arctic Ultra to summiting the tallest mountains on the planet - including the tallest mountain on the planet, three times. Jon is a Montane Athlete, member of the Alpine Club, ambassador for the Youth Adventure Trust, and a member of both the Mountain Training Association and the Association of Mountaineering Instructors.

His career sees him running his own mountain expedition company - aptly called Mountain Expeditions - facilitating and taking part in the 7 summits world record, climbing mountains incredibly quickly, travelling from continent to continent, summiting Everest three times, giving his time to host and run altitude and skill seminars, and still finds the time to escape to places like Chamonix and Scotland for some me-time.

Be Bothered

One of the key take-aways you should take from this, is Jon's infectious attitude to "Be Bothered". It's similar to Lucy Shepherd's view too.

You know when you wake up, need the loo, don't go, carry on not going, keep trying to sleep, and then two hours later you go and fall alseep within five minutes of having done so? This is the exact situation where Jon says you should "Be Bothered".

Quite often when you finish a day on expedition, all you will want to do is sit back and relax. But really, you can't. Especially when it comes to high altitude. You need to get your kit prepped, square away your admin, melt snow for the next day's water... everything.

There's no need to explain further, but Jon does explain how you can practice for this in everyday life. Things like taking out the recycling. You may think "I'll do it later". But instead, you should "Be Bothered" and get it done straight away.

Much like the gym, this works for your physical fitness preparation too. His own example was cycling uphill. Instead of looking at the hill as a total point, he says instead to break it down to manageable distances, and repeat those small distance intervals until you reach the top.

If you want to grow as a person, or simply prepare for the high-altitude mountains, do this.

Short Term Loss, Long Term Gain

Jon touches upon this too - and it is so relatable!

Talking from experience, we all need to start thinking what our long-term goals are. It doesn't mean you need to stop living today. Just a reminder to start thinking of where you want to be, and is what you're doing right now going to get you there.

A Deep And Vast Experience

Jon has a huge experience in climbing Everest, Denali and the rest of the 7 summits. He has speed records and experience in such huge experience.

Hear how Jon compares the North and South approaches on Everest, climbing mountains, dealing with altitude, endurance races, living in North Wales and more.

Today we welcome Lynn to the show, who has a fantastic blog. She is a professional ski instructor. Lynn's typical year starts teaching to an incredibly high standard on the Montana slopes and then moving down to Tennessee to teach Kayaking after a month hiatus after the winter season.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

A Three Seasons Van

Lynn has a van from the 90's that - for the most part - fits the bill. She has done only a few modifications, but most crucially she has added a wood stove.

However, she does talk about how, when in Montana, the night can get pretty cold. It's all good kitting out your van, but it's even better when you can stay at a friends house when temperatures plummet well below -10F/-23C!

An Adventure Year - On Repeat

In the winter, Lynn stays in Montana and teaches skiing throughout the season. The van is owe a brilliant thanks for that. Although she has to add a few layers in the peak of winter, it is the van that enables Lynn to be free and stay to teach in this beautiful setting.

Spending the winter teaching some hard skiing is incredible. Naturally, you get some clients who are slower, or perhaps willing to learn. But so many epic powder days are to be had during the season.

Hear more about this in the show, and how Lynn tailors teaches for each person - quite a transferrable skill!

After the ski season, Lynn usually kayaks - for herself this time - for a month to recharge. Then, it's straight back into the next job!

Moving through to Tennessee, Lynn teaches kayaking May-August, then chases white water across the state and over to North Carolina, Georgia and more.

Lynn describes her time as lucky. Although it was a quick comment, I couldn't disagree more. No-one came and handed her this lifestyle as a prize. Lynn has worked hard to have this career and live this lifestyle. A lesson we should all learn and take forward.

On this whopper of an episode we welcome James to the show. During the podcast, James just kept delivering on detail, locations, tips and his language was wonderfully descriptive; we just had to keep going.

If you have any interest in somewhere new, India or travelling to India I highly recommend you get a drink and some snacks, strap in, and listen away.

James describes the people as truly amazing, with such rich history and culture. The original desire was to do the golden triangle. What James eventually did was drive around the country exploring all of India's know and hidden secrets, and stumbling across some big cats along the way!

"They said they had never had a tourist in their town"

In this episode, we start in Mumbai, and James takes us through his itinerary step-by-step. Providing fantastic detail and information. James gets truly immersed in the culture, and is sure to captivate you with his story.

Ema has moved to the UK and befriended several other fellow students of multiple nationalities. When they thought of a holiday Croatia seemed like a great choice and chance for her to visit for the first time as a tourist. Did I mention students? Buckle up for fantastic anecdotes, information, and alcohol.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

A Tourist At Home Some of us may relate to Ema’s position. Having never explored her own country, she returned to investigate the beautiful landscape and secrets of Croatia.

The trip primarily focussed on nature, travelling in April (her recommended time to travel). Being her country, Ema did stop for a cultural view. Specifically, the start of the trip saw more city exploration and family visiting.

Escapism New friends at university, needed a break. 6 months later, they were on their way to Croatia.

Croatia is a beautiful country scattered with mountains, culture and stunning coastline along the Adriatic sea.

From her home near Pula to the Plitvice Lakes and a run in with some frogs, Ema takes us through her fun and adventurous roadtrip – and diving into the cold sea!

Saving for years, spending more-than-the-price-of-a-guitar on shipping his guitar, and grabbing his passport, Ali and his partner headed to Australia. Their plan? Live the Van Life for a year, roadtrippin’ across Australia.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

Home Is Where You Park It I first saw this quote on one of Ali’s photos. Before I had even completed my first roadtrip, I learned of his plans.

Ali is one of my closest friends, and at this stage I hadn’t fully understood these passions. Naturally, I was happy for him. But I didn’t fully understand. The last time I had done anything truly interested was a family holiday to ski in Italy in 2013. We had struggled to keep in touch for various reasons for the years prior to this, and now he was already going, and for a year?!

For the next 12 months I saw him just so happy. For 10 months he moved up and down Australia living out of his van. Visiting Tasmania, driving up to Sydney, visiting National Parks. You can hear all about it in the podcast. After those 10 months, I got to see him move his away up South East Asia.

This is what opened my eyes to travelling more long-term, and living the van life.

Ali is also the man who writes the music for this podcast, and is a ridiculously talented guy. I would recommend listening to this track here and consider following him. Legally. On the internet. Not in person. This is a fantastic track of his that builds up leaving you feeling fulfilled, reflective, and positive!

Living Out Van Life There are so many fascinating stories from people all over the world who travel with the use of a trusty camper van that I thought a series dedicated to this type of travel was needed!

Ali travelled the East Coast of Australia for 10 months covering Tasmania and the Bay of Fires, driving the Great Ocean Road and visiting Kangaroo Valley.

Once again we welcome Raj from RSP Podcast for a hattrick and to talk about Egypt. Full of great information and anecdotes, I really I hope you enjoy this session. We discuss some key areas to explore and touch upon the level of security in the region.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

Raj has some incredible and unique experience in Egypt. Travelling in from the East, he crossed conflict-torn areas, military tanks, and abandoned hotels with the Islamic State hiding in the northern mountains there.

Arriving here was a stark contrast to Jordan. Yet, the landscape itself was utterly beautiful.

Exploring Egypt Raj’s love for culture and history once again shows and signs in this episode as we travel from the Asian continent to the African continent. Raj travels south, following the Nile, and avoiding terrorist attacks… literally.

Interrailing is a fantastic way to travel and explore Europe. Each person's trip can be so unique, and in the first of what I hope to be many, Angele joins us today to talk about her time spent interrailing across Europe.

Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa!

A Spontaneous Trip Like so many of us, this interrailing trip came about when Angele's friend got in touch to get away and explore Europe. As it turns out, Angele had been thinking about getting away for a while too.

The beauty of interrailing is that you can design your own route, and not one person has the same experience. This can be true of any single country, so imagining adding a rail pass that allows you to explore many many more!

From Dublin To Porto

Angele's journey begins in Dublin. They avoid the standard go-to tourist locations and get right into the spirit of Dublin. After visiting Manchester (so close the Lake District!) and London for a brief moment, they reach mainland Europe - where the adventure really begins!

Listen to the podcast to find out more from mountains to tattoos!

Countries include: Ireland, UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal

Towards the end Angele speaks so highly of a specific tour company in Porto: https://www.oportomountaintour.com/

Solo Travel To Clear The Head

Helsinki is a beautiful city with a lot of history. It is home to culture, nature, saunas, activities, a sea fortress and 8 National Parks within a two hour drive. Sounds like heaven, right?

I booked my trip to Helsinki the year before, and it was my last trip before the pandemic. Travelling solo, I packed my bags, checked my kit, grabbed my passport, and headed to the airport!

Land Of A Thousand Lakes

Arriving in Helsinki was... actually a bit disappointing. I loved landing in a foreign and unknown territory. I loved the clean crisp air. But Helsinki in March is meant to be covered in snow with a frozen sea; it's why I booked for March. Instead, thanks to global warming, this wasn't the case.

Never mind. Quickly jumping in the taxi (don't do it! Uber is cheaper!), and quizzing the driver on some crucial lingo (thank you, please, etc.) we drove through the streets to my first night stay, just a hostel. I wasn't excited for this one, it was the Airbnb I couldn't wait to see! Read on or listen to find out!

The hostel was good though. Easy check in, free breakfast. Then I booked the Uber to collect my car rental.

Collecting the car, and boasting about its horsepower to Instagram, I decided to head out to Teijo National Park. When looking at the Finnish National Parks website it is incredible to see just how many National Parks are within a two hour drive of Helsinki!

Arriving at Teijo, I was the only soul there! After checking that it wasn't in some way closed, I decided to take a walk around. See for yourself here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbwq0-GgFRY

The park was spectacular. Quiet, fresh, beautiful and I had it all to myself. After taking a quick rest by the frozen lake, I packed up and headed out to the Airbnb. The reason why I was excited? Two words:

Private. Sauna.

This had me hooked since I booked. Not only that, but it had a balcony right next to that not-so-frozen sea that I was excited to experience. If you want to check it out for yourself, you can click here. The hosts were fantastic, and it is a 10 minute walk from the city centre, whilst being right next to a local shop too.

The rest of the night just consisted of getting relaxed and changed, grabbing food (and the world's gift itself: Somersby Apple Cider - Bottled!) and heading out to the city centre. I visited the Allas Outdoor Pool and Sauna (highly recommend, definitely did not steal the towel!). Then, I went to the best Italian restaurant I have had the damn pleasure of eating at and had one of the best red wines. I sat outside with a blanket, drinking an Espresso Martini (or three) at Holiday Bar watching the world go by, and went home to sleep.

A Change Of Plan

The next day I rose early, experiencing sunrise on the balcony at -1 degree Celsius. I'm meant to be driving 6 hours North to Koli National Park today. I had this great idea of watching sunset from the top of this cliff, overlooking flat forest land. I had even researched to make sure it faced West!

But that's the problem with making plans from afar; they often don't stick. Plus, 12 hours total driving - just driving - seemed like a waste of time. It was Day 2 and I had already got the check-in notification for my return flight.

I love a roadtrip and all, but that just seemed crazy.

"It is incredible to see just how many National Parks are within a two hour drive of Helsinki!"

So, over a croissant and coffee, I quickly changed plans. I'd explore Helsinki tomorrow (read on or listen to find out more!) and tick off the two other local National Parks on the list today.

Getting showered, sauna'd, and dressed I grabbed my kit and headed to the car:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRPuCaJEpMk

You can watch above or listen to the podcast for more info, but this day was a delight. Well, mostly. Life will hit no matter where you are and what you're doing, and my head decided to see the solitude as a chance to go over some less-than-positive things.

You just have to process it, and chat with somebody about it if you can!

Being met with stunning forests, beautiful silence, and ice and snow, I arrived back at the Airbnb happy with the outcome!

At Nuuksio National Park I did the Klassarinkierros Trail. At Sipoonkorpi National Park I did the Kalkinpolttajan Trail (which takes you to the top of Hogberget).

TOP TIP: Google Maps takes you to Nuuksio on the West side of the park, the opposite side I wanted for the original trail I had researched.

I tried to get to a local Finnish restaurant I had google'd. After finding it was fully booked I tried really hard to resist. I did. I promise! But went back to that Italian Restaurant for my pizza and red wine.

Bliss!

Exploring Helsinki On Foot

Time for the last day. You know the drill by now: balcony, sunrise, sauna, bags, out the door. It was a shame to check-out so soon after checking in, but it was 6AM and I had a city to explore!

You can listen to the podcast to find out more, or watch the videos below. I got a Helsinki Card but really the highlights for me were Suomenlinna, The Natural History Museum, The National Museum and Löyly Sauna. 28,000 steps later, I was back in the car on my way to the airport.

We welcome John to the show who talks to us about his time spending 8 days in Finnish Lapland.

From husky safaris, frozen lakes, night trains and the big man himself - Santa Claus - I hope you like this episode!

Lapland has always been a place that entices most. From the beautiful snow in the winter, the eternal day in the summer, and the Northern Lights.

This place is on many people's bucket list!

A Week In The Arctic Circle

Starting our journey in Helsinki, John quickly moves into the artic circle to say at the Kakslauttanen glass igloo resort.

Hear how he talks about his experience with the husky safari (dog sledding), seeing frozen lakes and more.

Crucially, what surprised him the most was the people. If you know much of the stereotype, you're probably expecting me to say how abrupt they were?

Wrong.

John tells us how the people could not have been more friendly and willing to help when needed.

For more information please follow John on @travellers_for_life and also https://travellersforlife.gr/ including multi-language translations for their blogs - at the bottom of the page.

We welcome Katie to the show who was lucky enough to spend a day at Yosemite National Park while visiting the area for a conference.

In this short episode, Katie details how she got to the park from the conference venue, and the day spent there, including overnight details.

Making The Most Something I’ve been giving a lot of thought to recently is making use of negative time. Whether that’s listening to a podcast in the car, or learning a language with Duo Lingo while waiting for your bus.

Katie went one step further. While visiting solely for a conference, she decided to get out to Yosemite and see as much as she could.

Hold My Bet, I’m Off For A Hike! Pink Canyon is a hike within the Valley Of Fire State Park. One hour from Las Vegas, this can be a beautiful addition to your adventure, or a weekend away if you’re local! Rock scrambling, petroglyphs, hiking and more.

Remembering fondly the heat radiating off the rocks, sensually attempting to melt him, Dustin from That Adventure Life (one of the best travel blogs about!) talks about this gorgeous location further in this podcast.

Surprise! The Valley Of Fire Moving straight in to parking and logistical tips, Dustin kicks off talking about his overall impressions. First thoughts, the overall landscapes, the colours… it’s enough to make you book a flight before finishing the podcast!

He first went to the Valley Of Fire from a secret plan his wife and blogger partner Vy organised.

Surrounded by colourful rocks full of reds and pinks, you can either do short hikes (0.25 miles) all the way through to 20 miles+ hikes. Remembering to leave your sandals at home, remember to take boots with good tread, and take more water than you think you need!

Just like his tips for Lake Tahoe, remember to get here early. The first hike he discusses has a great lay-by parking spot, but can only hold 3 cars! Dustin also has an Ultimate Driving Guide for Valley Of Fire.

Fire Wave Hike… What A Name! Fire Wave is a fantastic geological feature you will want to grab photos of, from iPhone to SLR. A straight forward hike, with only one part of shade near the end!

Dustin also talks about a top tip involving a cliff to climb nearby. Listen to around 14 minutes to hear it!

Pink Canyon is a shorter hike to take up your day. Head back to the visitors centre from Fire Wave, and you’ll see Pink Canyon to the side of the road, leading down to a slot canyon… Dustin explains it better. Just take a listen below, and check out their video of the hike too.

That Adventure Life also have a brilliant YouTube channel that you have to check out, where they detail their trips in short videos.

Welcome To The Middle East Jordan was Raj’s first experience in the middle east, riding into Aqaba. For a first place, what a great choice. Not only is Raj a history buff, but it is located right on the tip of the Red Sea, crystal blue water and jagged mountains scratching the sky.

From here, Raj heads to Wadi Rum Desert and beyond.

Exploring Every Inch Of Jordan With his passions in the right place, Raj explored and hitchhiked every part of this country, and was a perfect guest to have on the show.

Talking on Wadi Rum, he talks about sleeping under the stars with nothing but a mattress, and how the landscape looks like the moon at night, and Mars during the day!

A must do for this gorgeous and under-estimated country is the ancient city of Petra and the Valley Of Moses.

Raj explores trails, speaks with the friendly locals, drinks tea, floats in the Dead Sea and tells us about his adventure backpacking through this corner of the globe.

You can read a more detailed article of his time from Raj’s guest blog with Travel With Cooky’s site.

Raj also hosts his own podcast, which you can follow here.

Clear Water, Mountains On All Sides Lake Tahoe is a great place for a not-so-short roadtrip away on the weekend (7-8 hours from Southern California) and offers some of the best kayaking in the area. Dustin from That Adventure Life knows all too well how beautiful it is there and the adventures to be had.

In this episode, Dustin goes over a perfect weekend itinerary: a kayak, via ferrata, and hike. Then, back in time for work on Monday! Or, for those outside of California, add this to your own itinerary and don’t go back to work on Monday!

At 1,897m, the water can get cold there (bring your skis!). So Dustin has mostly gone in April-July for the warmer months. It’s the best time for adventure and relaxing there.

A Weekend Itinerary Kicking off the trip with kayaking, you can explore the lake launching from Sand Harbour. There are kayaks to rent here if you don’t have the kit. Cruising down the coastline is a wonderful drive, but with smaller parking spaces and busy location, Dustin recommends you get there early!

The via ferrata seems the most exciting to me. The route up has some beautiful views, and some great stories. One talks of a tree with a ski bolted to it. Why? A skier once crashed there. But to have views over the lake after a day of kayaking on it seems beautiful. If you’re going to do it, choose the four hour slot!

You have pine trees, mountain landscape and teal waters. To top it off, you can watch a beautiful sunset at Chimney Beach. What a perfect way to round off your trip.

Barcelona is a beautiful city right on the Spanish coast. Attracting thousands of tourists every year, there is a multitude of reasons for visiting from football to museums to the surrounding landscape.

Hear and read more below in how Anthony and his friend explored this city from top to bottom!

The Perfect 8 Night Itinerary

Whether you're interrailing, stopping by on a conference or backpacking your way across Europe, Barcelona has to be a stop off for you to stop and explore.

Anthony talks through his itinerary in detail and the city exceeded his expectations.

Kicking off the trip, Anthony escaped the streets initially and went to Montserrat, a monastery and vineyard for wine tasting. From here, he goes on to explore La Sagrada Familia and just how stunning this architecture.

The rest of the podcast explores pricing, tips, football, Spanish Cider (you've got to hear how they pour this!), Gaudi and more!

What Antony remarks about Gaudi is just how unique his work is. He discusses how it's easy to become complacent with what you have at home in your country, so do to experience something so different is a pleasure, albeit it very busy!

Anthony also got time to himself to experience the culture and quirky museums, as his friend rented a bicycle to do a 140km cycle route in the area.

The Best Hiking Practice

Cheddar Gorge is one of UK's secret (not so secret) wonders. In my opinion, it is the best hiking practice that the South UK has to offer. It is easily accessible to everyone, especially in the South West being located south of Bristol.

It's an ideal location for anyone strapped for time or fuel money and can't make it to Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia, Lake District National Parks or Scotland.

The Walk

Cheddar Gorge offers beautiful and stunning views across and all the way out to the sea. Using the National Trust's directions, it was also a super easy to follow. Parking can be difficult at peak times, but here's a top tip: go mid-late afternoon. You will bypass a lot of the traffic which means more parking and less traffic on the route. The top is west facing, which means some of the most gorgeous sunsets, and a short walk (and a few hundred steps) to finish the walk back on the street below.

The only downside? I'm yet to go to one of the cute coffee shops before they close!

The walk begins with a sharp and long ascent, takes you over some Norwegian Flat terrain (basically: not flat), down on to the road and then back up the other side on a longer, less steep ascent to the highest point on the gorge.

It is the best hike in the area to make you feel worked, and take your breathe away on two counts: the elevation and sunset.

Not Just Hiking

If you're interested, the area also provides so much more than hiking. You can do rock climbing, explore the caves, or simply be a tourist in the town of Cheddar.

Never Underestimate Any Mountain

Never underestimate any mountain. This is the lesson my friend and I learned on this trip. Pen Y Fan stands at only 886m, and we rather ignorantly went into this hike confidently calling it a 'hill'.

What Pen Y Fan did was let us get close, bend us over, and spank us back out the way we came. But what a perfect place to fail on; low altitude, no sheer drops (that we got close to), local terrain, easy to navigate back to where you came from... and more as I explain in the podcast.

Pictured above, is Matt lying in the snow - completely fragged - and above his knee, on the horizon, is Pen Y Fan in the distance.

It Was All Going So Well

We start on the night before. I drove over to Matt's house and ready to do Pen Y Fan the next day, followed by Snowdon the day after.

We googled 4 main ways to do the route, and decided on doing "The Tough One" - the classic horseshoe hitting 4 peaks in the area.

We went shopping, got our food and extra water bottles, packed up our gear and hit the hay, ready for an early start. Thinking I had the right car park ready to go on Google Maps...

What Went Down

"We had no map and when we arrived swiftly discovered that we had left all of the food at home, 2 and a half hours away."

So, if you type 'Taf Fechan car park' into Google Maps it will not provide you with the right car park for this. So as you can imagine, nothing went right from the moment we left. Although we didn't realise this until later.

It's worth noting: we still had a blast. An awesome day. So everything from now, we were 98% of the time smiling. But it did go very wrong.

We arrive at the car park and start following the instructions. We had no map and when we arrived swiftly discovered that we had left all of the food at home, 2 and a half hours away. With the shorter December days we didn't want to drive back to civilisation, so we cracked on with just two army style ration packets (one of nuts, the other raisins).

We then began the walk (from the wrong car park) and we realised we had left the water in the car. Matt had his camel/hydration pack which holds 2.2L so we just decided to press on, even though we could never see how much we had left. Everything we did from now, water was rationed.

It doesn't help our simple and uneducated minds at the time that the horseshoe circles around a small reservoir, and that there is a larger one next to it that we decided was the correct one from the map. In addition, I recently went back with my daughter and found the correct reservoir to be empty, so who knows how long that had been and if we even would have seen it.

We pressed on, and after back tracking when lost in boggy woods, decided to just cut up the hill side and force our way on to the ridge; we'd have to get there anyway, right?! In doing so, we had to jump a river in high flow. Not exactly signs that we were on the right path...

We pressed onwards up the hill side through undulating grass which was threatening to twist our ankles at any second, sucking the energy out of us. Acknowledging we were likely - almost definitely - not on the correct trail. We then cut up a further hill side to get on to the ridge (video at the top).

Always Take The Right Way, Not The Easy Way

I explain further in the podcast, but what ensues is us doubling our, trying to take shortcuts, draining our energy while dehydrated and not eating anything.

Although fun, we messed up in a big way. At one point, we finally received 3G and loaded Google Maps, and we had been heading the wrong direction! So, instead of heading up the ridiculously windy ridgeline, we decided to walk the inside of the 'bowl', shortening our distance and staying out of the wind. Instead of choosing the right way, we chose the easy way... which was not easy. We drained our energy on more undulating grass, and had to reclimb the ascent on a steeper slope.

Pulling The Plug

Eventually we sat, drained, filled only with a little bit of water and some raisins and nuts. Using our newly acquired, state-of-the-art 3G we checked our timings. 2 hours to Pen Y Fan, 2 hours until sunset, 1.75 hours to the car.

We decided to head back, in sight of Pen Y Fan. So close, yet so far.

It's a good thing we did, including Matt falling asleep by a river for 5 minutes, it took us 2 hours.

Beautiful Beaches, Delicious Fruit, and King Philip II of Spain

The Philippines is a collection of over 7000 islands in South East Asia and attracts tourists from all over the world - pandemic aside. It is a country that can provide history and culture in the capital, and beautiful nature on its surrounding islands.

This is my second podcast interviewing a guest, the first officially for "Between The Mountains", and made for a very multi-cultural interview; a Brit interviewing a Chinese-Canadian staying in Vietnam about the Philippines. The world is a wonderful place.

A Journey Across The Islands

The Philippines is a place on my bucket list to explore, with places like El Nido, Palawan and Coron Islands naturally on the list to visit! When I do go, I will be using things like this budget trip article from Bags Always Packed to help me.

Starting the episode discussing history and culture, and the expectations of it. We also discuss the friendliness of the people there, supporting so much of what I have heard about this place. Rick compares Thailand - a place he describes as friendly but for your tourism money - with little situations in the Philippines like a local paying for his food out of kindness.

Rick discusses his day by day itinerary travelling across the country as he backpacked through South East Asia; perfect for researching or reminiscing your own trip! Join us as he hikes mountains, catches ferries, visits historical sites, and discovers secret beaches.

Sometimes It's Not All It Seems

Something I find interesting about Rick's account of the Philippines is that it doesn't always meet your expectations. So many people speak so highly of the country (well, perhaps not the capital) and yet Rick's experience differs.

This is seen every where. I personally compare Naples to real-life Gotham, and I have friends who find places like Cambodia completely horrible, even though they only went there from recommendation in the first place.

Rick expected to find a rather colonial country with so much history, and it wasn't all that he imagined it to be, despite how incredible the trip was. He also admits that travelling in tropical season wasn't the smartest idea either.

I really like and appreciate the honest account of his trip - which certainly isn't all doom and gloom. There are so many wonderful moments, including the featured photo which was their own special moment on the trip. You'll have to listen to find out where this secret location was!

The Mountain With Its Head In The Clouds  Ben Nevis is the tallest mountain in the UK. Being only 1345m high you’d think that would be nothing to brag about, but what the UK lacks in height it more than makes up for in elevation gain and most importantly: weather.

In hindsight, I’ve had seeds sown all my life to adventure in the outdoors. I discuss this further on a podcast I featured on with Destinations Beyond Expectations. As I began to love hiking – which is continuously growing more and more – I decided to do the National Three Peaks in my own debut way. I’d climb them in winter!

Winter Is Coming  In summer, you just need to make sure you bring water and good boots for most of our mountains. In winter, it’s a different situation.

I know, it sounds a bit crazy to do something like this, right? Well, let me briefly explain before you listen how myself and my best friend – Dan – ended up doing this.

I had climbed Snowdon successfully in December covered in… well, snow. I had reached the top of Scafell Pike through 60+mph winds solo in January. Finally, I had this date planned to go to Ben Nevis and tick the last one off.

Then the forecast announced a storm was coming.

This completely changed everything. But not our decision to climb. Where I was packing a coffee flask, first aid, and a dry bag before, our kit list now grew more. We kept a close eye on the forecast the whole way through, keeping updated on everything. I checked the avalanche report daily and right up until we left I was checking the summit forecast, hourly at the end!

I had already dealt with extremely high wind at Scafell Pike (the way down was worse!), so I knew what that would feel like. I had watched every YouTube video and read all the articles I could find to check out the route. We had spikes, safety kit, map… and an epic forecast. We were good to go!

Climbing In A Storm  A bit of an epic day would be an understatement. This experience was incredible! But we were safe (as I discuss, links below!) and everything went perfectly. Why? Because of the planning and preparation we put in place.

There is a lake at around 500m on the Mountain Track route. That’s where the snow and wind really started to pick up.

After this, there was a cover from the wind by a waterfall where we got our spikes on. Then it was the high winds, harder wind gusts, and just us two climbing to the top.

We hiked past so many people who were on their way down. Some due to the lack of visibility, some due to wind, some to snow. But Dan and I kept pushing on. At no point were we ever in any real danger as we had mitigated so much, and there are no knife edge routes on this popular yet long and strenuous route.

Just before we did the summit push at around 1200m, we met the only other two people who had got that far. Thinking it a smart idea, we decided to stick together and move as a group, Storm Ciara taking our balance frequently.

Things were very windy (80-90+mph gusts) with occasional white-outs on the way up. But we did it! I managed to get footage of some of the calmer moments, but the summit was different. One word: Epic – and I gave my self no option but to make sure I filmed it!

Don’t Be A Fool  What I took away from this was my first proper lesson in mitigating risk, working hard, staying alert, and it paying off. We were back at the car and ready to set home just before the official yellow warning was put in place at 15:00.

But know your limits, and research as much as you can.

4 ‘hikers’ had to be saved by 22 mountain rescuers sent out two days after us. They went out with no appropriate clothing, trainers, no crampons, no map etc. Please, even if it’s the summer, take hiking seriously (but remember to smile!).

Escapism

Sometimes, you just need to get away. You need to escape to free your headspace and start lifting the fog in front of your eyes.

For Episode 1 I thought I would discuss my very own "Episode 1" and the moment I was bitten by the travel bug. I was doing just exactly as I stated above: escaping.

It was a fairly difficult time of my life. Quite heavy for someone of my age and level of life-experience. I was working in a 50+ hour a week job, never had any weekends, with 4 days annual leave remaining.

I was thinking of escaping to Greece and sitting by a pool for a week, just like most of my childhood holidays. But, I had this car (pictured above). My colleague suggested I do a roadtrip in it, to which I promised I'd look into it. As soon as I did, I was hooked.

I researched all the best driving roads, all of the best locations and routes. Google Maps was my friend and each night after work and my personal life could pause I planned a day of my trip.

Since I got back, nothing has been the same. Or maybe, 'Same Same But Different'.

My First Podcast - My First Roadtrip

This is my first travel podcast and it is just myself talking. The podcast typically jumps from interviews, to recommendations, to people's itineraries.

So, excuse my shaky or quiet voice, and I hope I don't lose you as I tell you all the details of what would become my first of many roadtrips.

The Roadtrip - To Switzerland And Back!

As you'll hear in the podcast, the first thing I recommend you do is sleep 8 hours per night! Or, simply shorten your drives each day and take more days off/travel less.

This trip was just under a week and took me from Dover-Geneva, Geneva-Bern (featuring the Furka Pass drive!), Bern-Amsterdam and Amsterdam-Dover.

I also seemed to have some nice luck on my side. The night I arrived in Geneva was the day before their National Day. Which meant that the following night in Bern I was able to go our and enjoy the night with strangers, celebrating into the early hours of the morning.

Although driving from Bern to Amsterdam in a day was long, I couldn't recommend a trip like this highly enough to you all.
