Jayla Sanchez-Warren is the director of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) at the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG). Jayla has spent her career serving, advocating, and planning for older adults. She is responsible for developing the Metropolitan Denver Regional Plan on Aging every four years. She has improved internal systems, increased funding, expanded partnerships and developed resources and services for older adults and people living with disabilities in the region.

Jane Barton, author of Caregiving for the GENIUS, is a passionate national speaker, writer, and listener. As the founder of Cardinal, LLC, she provides educational programs, books, videos, podcasts, and blogs to assist people in confronting the daunting challenges posed by aging, serious illness, and the end of life. As the Caregiving Ambassador for AARP Colorado (2014-2018), she offers educational programs for personal and professional caregivers throughout the state of Colorado.

Jane discusses questions around kids as caregivers:

  1. At some point in time, we will all be called to care for a family member or friend. But there is a population of caregivers in the U.S. that is not recognized by professionals or the public - Caregiving Youth. These are kids age 8-18 years of age. Why should we be concerned about kids serving as family caregivers?

  2. Who are these kids caring for and what are they being asked to do on a day-to-day basis?

  3. Were you called to care for someone when you were a kid?

  4. What are the possible consequences of kids assuming the responsibilities of care for a family member?

  5. We also know that approximately 5 million family caregivers over the age of 18 are seeking degrees at colleges and universities. Jane highlights some of the challenges these older students face when trying to balance learning and caring?

  6. How can we support caregiving youth and adult students who also care?

Jane Barton, author of Caregiving for the GENIUS, is a passionate national speaker, writer, and listener. The founder of Cardinal, LLC, she provides educational programs, books, videos, podcasts, and blogs to assist people in confronting the daunting challenges posed by aging, serious illness, and the end of life. As the Caregiving Ambassador for AARP Colorado (2014-2018), she offers educational programs for personal and professional caregivers throughout the state of Colorado.

Jane speaks about some of these issues:

  • How is the COVID-19 situation affecting family caregivers - those caring for people with the virus as well as other medical concerns?
  • When you want to be there to care - but can't (due to social distancing mandates) - what emotions can we expect to feel?
  • Family caregivers often feel isolated and thus experience loneliness. What can other family members and friends do to support and sustain the caregiver?
  • What innovative and creative ways allow us to bridge the gap when forced to physically distance from those we care about?
  • Do not forget the care receivers. How has COVID-19 impacted the lives of those dealing with a serious disease, disability, or medical concern?

Tia Sauceda introduces Murphy and Jayla to Dementia Friendly Denver. This is a national program (Dementia Friendly America) of which Denver is one of the early adaptors. The organization is a nonprofit whose vision is to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Tia explains that the program has created 7 initiatives to reach out to the community. Education is the key, and their program hopes to educate businesses, family caregivers, restaurants and hotels and government employees. The organization has also developed a resource guide and they will be developing a dementia wallet card.

Ann Wolters, our Certified Nutrition Therapists, returns to explain how to read food labels and why that is important. 70% of the American diet comes from processed foods. So what are the key issues you should be aware of? You might be surprised by Ann’s first recommendation. It’s not sugar, but sugar is 2nd and that’s because sugar is probably the most inflammatory food available and contributory to many diseases including heart disease. What about the fat-free conversation that has been around for years? Ann also explains to us that nutrition labelling is going to change next year.

Murf and Jennifer Reeves, from the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) welcome back David Silverstein to the show. David is the Founder and CEO of Lean Methods Group, a global management consulting firm (changing the way business leaders think for decades). He has also founded BrokenHealthcare.org, a not-for-profit organization fighting to change the healthcare system through forced price transparency.

David believes that price transparency won’t fix everything that is wrong with the American healthcare system, but nothing can be fixed without it. BrokenHealthcare.org sheds light on predatory pricing and unfair billing practices and providing support for those currently affected, in an effort to motivate policy makers to make changes.

In today’s show, David shares valuable information and insight on:

  • Why the healthcare system is not functioning effectively for the needs of Americans.
  • Examples of how hospitals across the country have been suing patients and employees.
  • How the healthcare industry is making more profit than they should (i.e., record earnings) even though Americans are not getting “better”.
  • How vulnerable we are as consumers to predatory pricing and unfair billing practices
  • Who sets the prices for products and services provided by healthcare providers (i.e., hospitals, medical treatment facilities, etc.).

Joining us again from the Better Business Bureau is Suzann Bacon Taylor, Director of Special Programs. Everyone knows that the BBB is the place for reference for businesses, but Suzann tells us that the BBB also reviews charities. National charities have been under review since the 1920’s and locally, the BBB has reviewed Colorado charities for about 20 years. Suzann also tells us that this is an extensive review of approximately 20 standards, whereas businesses are rated on 8 standards. If the charity meets all 20 standards, then it is accredited. Welcome Dr. Brianne Bettcher. Dr. Bettcher is an Assistant Professor and Neuropsychologist at the Rocky Mountain Alzheimer’s Disease Center. She explains that a neuropsychologist studies the changes in your brain and how that impacts your thinking, memory and behavior. Dr. Bettcher sees patients in the clinic who have concerns about their memory. Her role is to run tests to help determine what is happening as part of a memory disorder team. Dr. Bettcher explains that Alzheimer’s proteins traditionally affect your memory, but they can also affect other parts of the brain as well which dramatically complicates diagnosis. If you have some concerns about your memory, Bri discusses what you can expect when you go to a clinic and the types of tests they run to help you understand what is happening.

In our 2nd segment, Murf and Jayla visit with Dr. Carey Candrian, an Assistant Professor of Health Communication at the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine. Dr. Candrian focuses on developing innovative ways to share and deliver information about end of life care options. Termed Advanced Care Planning, Carey explains this is a process to help people receive medical care that’s in line with their wishes and values. This requires effective communication, effective documentation and effective linking back to the health care system. Based on the concept that health care providers are already overburdened with medical issues, Dr. Candrian and her associate, Dr. Lum, have received a grant from Next Fifty Initiative to train volunteers. In conjunction with Denver Hospice, they have created a certification training program to facilitate these types of conversations, with an additional emphasis on the LGBTQ communities. Congratulations on a great idea that can really help our community.
