The Self Improvement Show: Recent Episodes

Dr. Irene Conlan

The Self Improvement Show was created because almost everyone wants to be better, do better, and achieve more, but we don't always know how to do that. We aren't looking for perfection. We are simply trying to improve in ways that allow us more happiness, contentment and success with some laughter along the way. We address issues common to us all and suggest useful tools that will help you tap into your strengths and your wonderful uniqueness. We think most self improvement is an inside job so we talk a lot about how to go within to make lasting changes. We talk to people who have struggled and won and have great stories to tell as well as those who live ordinary lives in extraordinary ways. The show is laid back, informative and down to earth. The welcome mat is always out and we invite you to join us.

Before you read this, look around you. Whether you’re at home or in your office, let your eyes rest on three things that you can get rid of and never miss. In the next few days, make a mental note of things in your life that you consider “clutter.” Don’t find any? Look again. Why? Because we’re going to talk about being more and having less. Our guest for Thursday’s show states, “Be more with less” is about simplifying your life and really living. Living with less creates time and space to discover what really matters. Through decluttering, and focusing on the best things instead of all the things, you can create a life with more savings and no debt, more health and less stress, more space, and less stuff, and more joy with less obligation.” Don’t we all want more savings, more health, more space and more joy? Come hear what Courtney Carver has to say before you start the new year.

If you have a chronic illness of any kind, you want to listen to this show. The power of the mind is amazing, and when it comes to your health, it is powerful. Often, if a physician tells someone they have a certain amount of time to live, and they accept it they may die almost to the day of the prediction. If the doctor tells the patient they need to take a pill to get better, it is pretty sure the pill will have some effect, even it is sugar. Patients who develop a chronic illness are too often led to believe that they will just have to accept their diagnosis. Medical professionals tell them their health will never improve—after all, that’s what makes their condition chronic. Instead, they will have to learn to manage painful and debilitating symptoms. Dr. Nauman Naeem’s new book Healing From the Inside Out challenges the common narrative of chronic illness. We will talk to him about how it is possible to overcome chronic disease and change your life.

Have you ever been to Disneyland or Disneyworld? If you have, you know it is a magical place. It’s called “The Magic Kingdom” for a reason. If you doubt that it is truly magic, simply look at the faces of the children who visit there. And, if you have been there yourself you benefited from the work of Jody Jean Dreyer. She visited there in 1971 soon after it opened. That was the beginning of a 30-year career with Disneyland. We will talk about her work with Disney and about her newly released book, “Beyond the Castle.” She will help you identify you own personal “Happily Ever After.”

Where do you live? I’m not asking for your street address. I’m asking if you are in a personal space that propels you toward your dreams and encourages you to step into your power. Or do you live in a place of self-defeat, discouragement, and regret? You see there is a place of personal-knowing, self-acceptance, and inner-power within each of us. It’s called “The Empowerment Zone.” You have to make a conscious choice to live there, and you have to make a series of conscious choices daily to stay there. Oh, it’s a wonderful place to live. But there are three mistakes you can make that keep you on the outside looking in—that keeping you out of The Empowerment Zone. Cindy Mazzaferro will join us to talk about these three things and how you can remedy them or prevent them altogether. Join me as we move into the Empowerment Zone.

The star of adventure movies is seen doing feats that no normal human being could handle. But the star is not generally the one who deserves the applause. It is the stuntman who did the daring, death-defying job and he often goes unnoticed. But on this show, we WILL notice Curtis Rivers. Curtis is known in the movie world for being daring, ambitious, and hard working. He is a recognized member of the Hollywood Stuntman’s Hall of Fame and a two-time Guinness World Record breaker. We will talk about his work as a stuntman, but we will also pursue the ideas in his newly released book, “The Fearless Path: What A Movie Stuntman’s Spiritual Awakening Can Teach You About Success.”

Paddy Fievet has been with us before and was one of those guests you just HAVE to have back. Her story is compelling, and she tells it with a rich southern accent and a sense of humor that makes you feel good just to hear it. But her story is one that many of us share. Her story is of her search for meaning, love, purpose, and authenticity. We will walk with her through her divorce, paralyzing agoraphobia and panic attacks and, hopefully, emerge with her to self-discovery and new spiritual connection. We will talk about her latest book “The Eagle’s View: Five Steps to Modern Mysticism.” She may just inspire you to know that you, too, have a sacred story that must be realized and expressed. You are cordially invited to hear this remarkable, loving, funny, profoundly spiritual and delightful woman named Paddy Fievet.

Robert O. Williams is coming back. He had so much of interest in the first interview, and we received so much positive feedback, that he’s coming back. We didn’t have a chance to get into the meat of his book. For example, he states, “Our current times are full of immense suffering and cruelty simultaneous with the real awakening of millions of human hearts.” In light of the shooting in Las Vegas, this is a timely conversation. Neither did we have a chance to talk about his company, One08, which is an innovative global technology company. Its mission is to improve the lives of all human beings worldwide by developing and bringing to market scientifically based life-changing mobile apps and clean technology products that improve the health, performance, and lifestyles of its customers. Technology is giving us a clearer look into the mind. We can now see how emotions, thoughts, and reactions to events affect our mind and, in turn, our physical body. Science is now telling us things that the mystics have known all along—that we are holistic. What affects one part of us affects the whole of us. Mind-body medicine looks at the whole person with the intention of restoring the natural wisdom of the body to heal. More people are turning to holistic modalities and, at the same time, traditional medical practices are utilizing aspects of mind-body medicine to create “Integrative” medical practices. So, the question arises: Where is mind-body medicine headed?” On this show, we will talk with Dr. Joseph Cardillo, a leader in the fields of health, mind-body-spirit and psychology, about the future of mind- body medicine. One of the most misunderstood and yet powerful treatment modalities available to day is Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy. It is approved as a treatment modality by the British Medical Association and the American Medical Association although few MDs practice it. It can be used as a powerful anesthesia and is especially powerful when used in both dentistry and childbirth. In therapy, it allows you to tap into the hidden or forgotten thoughts and memories stored in the subconscious mind helping you to resolve some deep seated issues that may not have responded to traditional therapy. However, in spite of its usefulness, many people fear it. On this show, we will talk with a clinical hypnotherapist who practices “Deep Healing Hypnosis.”

There is a popular belief that communication is a vital part of a healthy relationship, but many of us get communication mixed up with talking. In fact, according to life coach and counselor Christopher Moon, talking is a very small aspect of communication, and rarely provides the clarity that is vital during times of relationship conflict. Words often lead to stories, and stories can entangle people in endless, self-perpetuating, confusing drama. It is often the case that, as couples shed excess stories, justifications, and rationalizations, fewer words are needed to express the underlying vulnerabilities that exist beneath ALL conflicts. This is a show that anyone in a relationship needs to hear. In the meantime, get the book, “The Untethered Relationship: Experience Your Unimaginable Capacity for Love.” Then, tune in to listen to this show.

Unconsciously, we relive our mother’s anxiety. We repeat our father’s disappointments. We replicate the failed relationships of our parents or grandparents. Just as we inherit our eye color and blood type, we also inherit the residue from traumatic events that have taken place in our family. While our physical traits are easily discernible, this emotional legacy is often hidden from us. Anxiety, fear, financial worries, depression, illness and unhappy relationships can all be forms of our unconscious inheritance. Unresolved traumas, some going back two or three generations, can ensnare us in feelings and situations that don’t even belong to us. They can forge a blueprint for our life, and can even pass onto our children. It doesn’t have to continue. It can end here. Today we will talk with Mark Wolynn, author of “It Didn’t Start With You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle.”

Today, the evidence is everywhere that meditation improves health, mental acuity, emotional balance and spiritual connection. While most North Americans today perceive Yoga as a valuable source of exercise and quieting of the mind, “The Heart and Science of Yoga” shows that it is so much more. As it was evolved through ancient wisdom, Yoga Science is an eight-step method for managing the life force energy that propels us and connects us to the infinite power that is within and without us all. And the result of mastering it is the bliss and daily joy that lies in the realization of our connection. On this show we will talk about the benefits of yoga with Leonard Perlmutter, the author of “The Heart and Science of Yoga.”

In my lifetime, I have seen wide swings in what kind of behavior is acceptable and what is not. We’ve gone from June Cleaver who did housework in high heels and was aghast over most of Beaver’s behavior to Modern Family where pretty much anything goes. We have migrated from being shocked that a presidential candidate was divorced to hardly noticing that a President was having a very public affair. Dishonesty in business gets a ho-hum and commercials for women’s underwear fill the TV screen. (some of us remember when it was terrible if your bra strap could be seen or your slip showed below the hem of your dress). More couples are living together without marriage than ever before. To say that our morality has changed is understatement. Is it for the better? Who knows? We’re going to talk about these shifts with Eden Collinsworth who has written a most delightful book, “Behaving Badly: The New Morality in Politics, Sex and Business.” This show is one not-to-miss.

New books are published every day. Sometimes we see advertisements about them, get information about them in email or get a pop-up as we surf the net. We may see promotions on YouTube or interviews on the news with an author whose book caught on and is on the way to becoming a best seller or has already hit the top of the bestseller list. Most of us don’t think about what it took to make that happen—the coaching, publicity, bookings, book signings, radio show appearances, and YouTube videos. It takes a lot of work on the part of someone or a group of “someones” to make all of that happen. Our guest today is a literary publicist with clients who have hit the best seller list. She will talk with us about what she does to help her clients succeed in the very competitive literary world. What does it take to get your work noticed and sold? But think about that person who was fired or caught in a downsize. If they have not been able to save for hard times, how do they pay their rent? How do they buy food for their family? How do they put gas in the car? Where can they find another job? What will they do? Imagine the panic that sets in when you don’t have an answer to those questions. Dr. Troy Bjorklund is a Chiropractor. For some of you the word “chiropractic” brings a negative image and some of you would never consider seeing one for your own health challenges. Others have experienced some remarkable results at the hands of a chiropractor. I, personally, have had only positive healing experiences from chiropractic in times when no one else could help me. As an R.N. with a Master’s degree I did not accept chiropractors as true health care practitioners—that is, until the M.D.s at a most prestigious medical institution told me to go home because they didn’t know what to do and come back if it grew so bad I couldn’t stand it anymore. Two visits to a chiropractor put me back on my feet. That was forty years ago. I have been a fan and patient of a chiropractor ever since. I want to share this remarkable healing modality with all of you and Dr. Troy Bjorklund will join me. Don’t miss it.

It tells the story of an American boy, an American family, and of dreams just out of our reach. -We all know about dreams just out of our reach, don’t we?- We will talk about his book, his love of writing and teaching and other things too fierce to mention. This show will be fun so don’t miss it.

Imagine being the head of a busy company with over 400 employees—and losing your voice. Not just losing your voice but becoming dizzy, out of breath and feeling sore when trying to speak. Most people in business have read 'Think and Grow Rich.' It is the Bible, so to speak, of the entrepreneur. It has become a classic. It has been 'updated' by some, revised by others, but the original edition simply cannot be improved. It is this original, classic edition that we will talk about on this show. If you are in business, or want to be in business, this book should be the first one you read. No, that’s not quite true. This book should be read, re-read, picked apart and fully digested. It is not a casual read. If you say to yourself, 'Well, I read it once and I’m not rich,” then you didn’t really 'get it.' Mitch Horowitz was instrumental in the republishing of this book as it was originally presented. So, yes, he is an expert. If you truly want to 'Think and Grow Rich' don’t miss this show.

Even though we have matured, some of the stories remain, and these fear driven, opinionated, and self-centered “child stories” are often the source of behavioral and emotional patterns that hold us back. Rosamund Zander will help us identify and rewrite these stories in order to transform our own lives and our relationships. You might want to read her latest book, “Pathways to Possibility” and then hear what she has to say to you.

We’re all familiar with coaching, aren’t we? We’ve know the football coach, the basketball coach and other sports coaches since we were in high school. We accept the concept that the team needs a coach who turns beginning players into members of a team that, hopefully, wins. Businesses are more and more providing coaches for their employees to help them become more productive members of the business “team.” We also have coaches for health, personal, professional, social, family, political, and spiritual dimensions. You name it, there’s probably a coach for it. But many of us, as individuals, have never sought out coaching and really don’t know what we could accomplish by doing so. We are going to talk with the Director of Coaching for Achieve Today to learn more about coaching and how having a coach can accelerate your reaching your goals and achieving your dreams. We hear more and more about Alzheimer’s disease these days. Estimates vary, but experts suggest that more than 5 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s. It is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. In most people with Alzheimer’s, symptoms first appear in their mid-60s and progresses from there until the patient has lost all ability to communicate or care for themselves. It is currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, but recent findings indicate that the disorder may rank third, just behind heart disease and cancer as a cause of death for older people. It is devastating for both the person with Alzheimer’s and the family. When Judi and Shari Zucker were told that their mother had a form of Alzheimer’s they set out to find ways to slow it down. We’re going to talk about what they learned and what they did to help slow down it’s progression.

Cardiovascular disease remains the #1 killer of Americans, even though it’s largely preventable. No one wants to die, so what’s going on? A recent study reveals that 94 percent of us are not taking very good care of ourselves. More research and education on healthy lifestyles and heart disease prevention have been disseminated over the past two decades than at any time previously. Investigators from the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, compared the results of two large-scale studies of the U.S. population that shows the percentage of adults aged 40-74 with a body mass index greater than 30 (obese) has increased from 28 percent to 36 percent, and physical activity 12 times or more per month has declined from 53 percent to 43 percent. The bottom line? As a population we’re getting fatter and more sedentary. Some would say, fatter and lazier. We’re going to talk about that today and get some ideas about what we need to do to reverse the trend.

Come and listen to master storyteller David Berner share stories of a life in pets—from a collie that herds Berner home when, as a two year old, he went streaking through the neighborhood to a father crying in front of his son for the only time in his life while burying the family dog on the Fourth of July. And from the ant farm that seems like a great learning experience (until the ants escaped), to the hamster that sets out on its own road trip but only gets as far as the dashboard. The author of the delightful book There's a Hamster in the Dashboard will show us how pets not only connect us with the animal world, but also with each other and with ourselves.

You lost your paycheck at a poker game and cannot pay the rent. You went back to your abusive boyfriend again. Relapse, slip, backslide, fall off the wagon. Whatever you want to call it, it’s demoralizing at best, life threatening at worst. You are far from alone. Addiction is among the most pervasive and urgent problems of our time. We are going to talk about a new and successful approach to treatment with Laura McKay and Dr. Rosemary Brown, authors of Addiction is the Symptom: Heal the Cause and Prevent Relapse With 12 Steps that Really Work.

Sarah Napthali explores how to apply Buddhist practices to our lives so that we may learn to be more calm and self-aware in our relationships. In distressed couples, individuals typically blame each other and fail to see their own role in any problems. We sit around waiting for our partner to change, to correct their faults and see that life would be much easier if they would stop doing this and start doing that. Most likely they might be doing the exact same, and we’ve reached a stalemate driven by the negativity bias. Sara will talk about how we can expand upon the principles shared in Buddha’s Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. How do these relate to the subjects of housework, anger, sex, conflict, and infidelity? She states that through mindfulness and ever-growing self-awareness, we begin to see our behavior more clearly and relate to our partner more lovingly. Her book is Buddhism for Couples: a Calm Approach to Relationships.

When most of us hear the word mystic our minds take us back centuries to find an old bearded man, in a monk's robe living in isolation, devoted to a life of prayer and spirituality. But Paddy Fievet doesn't fit that image and she says there's a modern mystic in each of us. She says that a modern mystic is a woman (or man) who understands life deeper than the ordinary five senses allow and, has not only awakened to her/his profound sense of intuition but utilizes it daily. The modern mystic, according to Fievet, knows her talents–her spiritual gifts–and through appreciation does her best to manifest them with grace. Being a modern mystic is not something she does. Instead, it is something she accepts and then allows and she feels a deep connection to God. Paddy will share her story and her insights. Listening to Paddy, you may discover that you, too, are a modern mystic. http://www. paddyfievet.com

Scalar energy is also known as prana, chi, radiant energy, zero point energy, qi, orgone, and eloptic energy. After years of experimentation and modification, Tom Paladino has developed a technique using scalar energy that will transmute pathogens quickly and painlessly. He is able to administer the scalar energy reverse-phase angle harmonic of a pathogen, thereby causing that agent of infection to disassemble or fall apart. He calls this a pathogenic cleanse. Scalar energy operates at the quantum level and is capable of disassembling all types of pathogens; for instance, virus, fungi, amoeba, parasites and protozoal infestations, thus eliminating the causative agent of disease. Once the causative agent of a pathogen disease has been eliminated the symptoms associated with that infection decrease or disappear altogether. We are denying our Self the love, beauty, passion, and, perhaps, the very reason for living. When we live in full expression we are true to ourselves, expressing who we know our Self to be in that moment. It is allowing who we are, our authentic self, our Divine Self to be seen, enjoyed, embraced, experienced and appreciated by all. Everyone wants to enjoy life to its fullest, but sometimes we get caught in a particular pattern, or are adrift, not certain of the path ahead. According to psychologist Dr. Deb Carlin, author of Build the Strength Within: Create the Blueprint for Your Best Life Yet, we need to envision our lives as the biggest and best projects we’ll ever take on. That means understanding our pasts–including both good and bad experiences–to gain clarity about how to move forward. She also points out that we all have greater inner strength than we imagine–strength that can help us deal with life’s challenges. But, strength alone is not enough. A better life does not happen without a blueprint that places us on an intentional track and that prompts us to be accountable and proactive. Dr. Carlin will explain how to create a personal blueprint.

Doug Bennett considers himself a head person— one who interacts with the world primarily through conscious thought, reason, rational discourse, words, etc. So WHY is he talking about feelings? He grew up believing feelings are not important and not to be discussed and, added to that, he's a scientist. However, his study of quantum physics made him realize that feelings and connection are the keys to our power in the universe. He states, The material journey turns out to be a journey of feelings. If you are a head person, too, you might want to listen to what he has to say and get the rest of the story as Paul Harvey used to say, from another head person. Scientist Anders Nilsson, PhD has been active in academia all his adult life, and, for just as many years, he has pursued an avid interest in spirituality. Although he currently keeps his scientific and spiritual work separate, he views the two as complementing each other. He considers science as the discipline best equipped to explore and understand the outer or physical world. Whereas, he regards spirituality as the field more adept to help us investigate and understand those experiences beyond our physical senses. Nilsson truly believes that humanity has a wonderful future ahead if more individuals work to transform their inner self using science and technology as tools to manifest in the physical world what the heart desires. His book The Gentle Way of the Heart will serve as a jumping off place for our discussion. Think about this: What does your heart truly desire? http://www.warwickassociates.com/about/book-campaigns/the-gentle-way-of-the-heart/

The fast pace of our lives can seem like an infinite loop. For many, this includes the constant barrage of emails, a 24/7 workplace, busy families, the challenges of uncertainty, and life’s trials and tribulations. All of this can make it easy for someone to get sucked into a “poor me” cycle. Instead of dwelling on the negative, David Mezzapelle recommends tuning your mind to Positive Forward Thinking—the ability to find the silver lining in every cloud no matter how difficult yesterday or today may be. Mezzapelle believes that we all have stories that can inspire and motivate others across many of life's themes. “We all have the capacity to make optimism contagious,” says Mezzapelle. “Whether people are enduring good times or bad, just knowing that others have persevered from similar experiences is comforting and delivers a message of hope,” he asserts. Tune in and hear from David Mezzapelle how YOU can develop Contageous Optimism.

Listening is an art practiced by way too few. Some of us, rather than listen, plan what we are going to say when it's our turn to speak so we don't really know what was said. On the flip side, we all know people who talk, and talk and talk but really don't say anything. They seem to be in love with the sound of their own voice and no one else has a chance to respond or speak. Like in everything else there should be a balance between speaking and listening. Eric Wagner addresses this for young managers who seem to want to cover up their insecurities by over-talking. His recently released book, Shutting Up talks about effective communication and offers a plan for achieving success as a manager. We will discuss: When are the most important times to shut up? What major mistakes do many managers make? How can managers get more respect? and more. You don't have to be in management to gain valuable help for yourself in improving your listening skills. Sometimes things are not what they seem to be. We've all experienced that in one way or another. Tom (Beardsley) North grew up in the family made famous by Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda who played the parents in the movie Yours, Mine and Ours. It was one of those perfect families you see on the big screen—a story patterned after the Beardsleys. The family was portrayed as a comical and harmonious blend of Helen North's eight children, Frank Beardsley's ten children and two of their children as only Hollywood could contrive. But the movie and reality were far apart. Tom tells what it was really like living in that famous but abusive family. It is his hope that he can help others who have survived or are involved in abusive situations. Tom's is a story of survival, hope and triumph at its best.

Tab Edwards argues that there is a very big difference between being “selfish” and acting “self-interested.” Many people, parents especially, feel that acting in their self-interest carries a stigma of being selfish and leaves them feeling guilty. The self-interested consider the needs of others, while the selfish do not. Acting in our self-interest is vital to survival and is not mutually exclusive from caring for others. Edwards explores a linkage between a person acting in their own self-interest and a resulting positive impact on society called “The Chain of Self-Interest,” which shows the connection between a person’s needs and how acting in their self-interest to satisfy those needs leads to The Common Good. We will feature his latest book, Chocolate Peppers: Why Acting in Your Own Self-Interest is Good for You, Your Loved Ones, Society, and the World.

All Americans want to be safe from terrorism and other threats to our national security. But, according to West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran Paul K. Chappell, we must debunk the myth that war makes us safe. “I want to shatter commonly held stereotypes about soldiers and peace activists,” he says. “These stereotypes not only deceive and divide us, but they also prevent us from understanding the art of waging peace and the power it gives us to solve our national and global problems.” In his latest book, The Art of Waging Peace: A Strategic Approach to Improving Our Lives and the World, Chappell shows that war is not the answer to protecting America’s interests or its citizens. He presents an innovative strategy for peace, replacing our war system with a more effective security paradigm.

In the UK and Europe, a young teacher named Jeff Foster is quietly awakening a new generation of spiritual inquirers to the experience of an abiding presence and peace in our ever-shifting world. His informal gatherings, blogs, and “kitchen-table video posts” have created a rising tide of interest in his teachings. He states, Our deepest longing is not for a drink, or a cigarette, or sex, or the next high, but for the deepest acceptance. We will talk about this deepest acceptance and what it means in all areas of our lives. While Jeff delightfully admits the irony of writing a book to convey something that is beyond words to teach, he confirms his ability to guide us in unexpected new ways to a space of absolute acceptance and joy, no matter what’s happening in our lives. We will address why we have so much trouble accepting ourselves as we are and why we have such deep resistance to life. Tune in to hear what Jeff has to say.

But have you ever stopped to consider your own beliefs—to truly examine them and decide for yourself if they are serving you or sabotaging you? Eldon Taylor has spent over 25 years researching the power of the mind and developing scientifically proven methods to use this power to enhance the quality of your life. His book, I Believe, just released on March 13, is a book that will not only inspire you, but will highlight the kinds of beliefs you hold that may be causing you to fail. In the process, it will provide you with the opportunity to choose, once again, the beliefs that drive your life.
