French producer Jean Tonique wants to have fun. In fact, it's pretty much his raison d'etre. Live and behind the decks, Jean Tonique wants to move the crowd, to get those bodies shaking.
New album 'Well Mannered Frivolity' is pretty much a mission statement, with the producer sluicing together disco, the French house lineage, and so much more. A delectable, delicious achievement, Jean Tonique adds a fresh pop touch that makes these underground tropes completely accessible. Of course, it also helps that 'Well Mannered Frivolity' is packed with banger after banger...
Completing a new mix for Clash readers, Jean Tonique opens with some party-starters, including Kaytranada's titanic edit of TLC's classic R&B rump-shaker 'Flippin On You'. Matching Hll & Oates against Shalamar, the French producer dives back into the underground with a series of edits, including his own take on an Idris Muhammad classic. Just the sort of thing we need to shake off those Monday blues, then.
Jean Tonique explains: “I’ve thrown together a little mix with some funky jams and groovy house tracks. I think it could be the perfect soundtrack for a night of well mannered frivolity.”

Orlando is something of an adventurer. Having lived in multiple corners of the globe (Ireland, London, New York), the producer has found homes on labels like Mixpak, Liminal Sounds and Gobstopper, before jumping onto Local Action for his forthcoming debut album.
Spanning pop, dancehall and razor-sharp club sounds, Orlando's productions have always come tinged with an emotional complexity. This shines through in his ambient pop soundscapes on his self-titled record, which also takes influence from the natural world and his self-definition as an "environmentalist".
Of his Clash mix, he says: "for me, when listening to music, there are two forms of emotion explored, direct (often found in pop music) and then the kind that is dense with emotion and the perception of which is independent of the music. this music for me provides a canvas for the listener to paint their own feelings onto.
i love both of them equally. the sincerity of direct emotion is something that is hard to turn away from... yet, the music which is open to your own interpretation often can tell you things you what you are thinking and feeling often before you realize them yourself. i try to explore both of these forms of emotion in my music. i sometimes aim to have both present in a song, with a mainline melody pushing for something obvious, underscored by an alternate feeling that leaves the song open to interpretation.
anyway, in this mix i try to explore the more emotionally dense music that influence me as a musician. there are some all time favorite songs and some songs by contemporary artists that i look up to. there are also a few songs that dont fit into this category but i love them all the same."
French house guru The Supermen Lovers looks to this future in this delicious dancefloor-friendly mix, full of his own productions...

Any avid followers of NY label Mixpak's manoeuvres will be aware of the name DJ Chalice, AKA @fallow_uk. The Boxed and Chow Down affiliate has a talent for making the kind of deconstructed, warped yet sunny club sounds that sparkle in the middle of sets. Having featured on Mixpak's hallowed festive bundle, he also dropped his debut EP, 'Fallow & Chalice', late last year, and his carnival-ready sound is one we're keeping a firm eye on in 2018.
Peppered with his own productions, Fallow's Clash mix is a wild ride of dancehall riddims, Afrobeats heaters, bubbly bassline, and even ATB's iconic '9pm (Til I Come)'. Once it's on, we can guarantee you won't be able to turn it off.
So switch on your closest available audio source, crank it up, and raise ya chalice.

Is there anything better than a DJ that can work a floor and has the time of their life doing it? Perhaps the best thing about @billy-daniel-bunter is how much he bloody loves raving — a joyous character in a culture of DJing that often takes itself too seriously, he’s been instrumental in the UK rave scene. Over the past 26 years, the walking rave encyclopedia and self-described ‘full time piss head’ hasn't necessarily been heralded by the mainstream music press, but has nonetheless made an indelible mark on UK dance culture. A permanent fixture at all manner of mass parties — the likes of Helter Skelter, Dreamscape, and Rezurection — Bunter’s been there right from the start and continues to crop up at the UK’s biggest underground events. Mumdance recently booked him for a Different Circles night, requesting he drop some ‘93/’94 hardcore “on the right side of happy”. Drawing for ‘92/’93 old school piano rarities on this Clash mix, he’s dug deep in that crate for a choice selection of jungle, acid, hard house and hardcore gems — and we can promise that it's essential listening.

Almost entirely self-produced, 'Turner Ave' is Blay's debut album on J-Cush's Lit City Trax that sees him going for gold, spitting over his own beats as well as those of Mazza Beats and Teeza. More recently, the prolific beatmaker has been dropping a slew of instrumentals (the heavily-spun ‘Carbon/Banter’ 12”) that showcase the grimier side of his sound, only with an expansive and highly melodic feel, and always adventurous. He’s pieced together a 100% production mix for us in anticipation of his album dropping — touching on grime, dubstep and bass.

We were pretty excited to learn that there’s a brand new label in town. Headed up by Boiler Room’s Ahadadream (AKA Ahad Elley) and as yet unidentified UK producer SNØW (who we’re assured is a well established beatmaker under another alias), More Time Records is a new imprint pushing the best in current UK sounds — from dancehall to UK funky to afrobeats.
The inaugural EP, ’24/7’, sees a mic cameo from Swing Ting’s Fox, and pushes the best in techno stylings, polyrhythmic drum tracks and bubbly helpings of bass that serve to kick the summer months into gear. ‘Running Late’, which we’re premiering here, is an overtly grime-led cut with bouncy bass stabs and hollow synths, that’s sure to do some serious damage in the club.

TRACKLIST --> http://www.clashmusic.com/features/clash-dj-mix-damon-bell
Damon Bell displays a wealth of knowledge in his music. Unafraid to reach into esoteric realms, the Oakland producer's work shatters the axis of house and techno by injecting fresh impetus into those forms. Utilising everything from sharp-edged funk to West African samples, Damon Bell sprinkles these elements liberally over his own, extremely original, ideas. New EP 'Altered Visions' is out now on Meda Fury, and it's a hypnotic, open-ended selection that never fails to surprise. To coincide, the producer crafted a mix for Clash, and it exposes a few of his musical roots - expect everything from disco to jazz-funk, early house and beyond.

Second Storey's mind seems to be a mesh of ideas, each bouncing into the next, sparking new sounds in the process. With new EP 'Spin Cycle' on the racks now, the producer has carefully crafted this very special mix - a sprawling web of sub-aqueous warehouse constructions.
German producer Leibniz flits between grime, jungle breaks, and sub-low drenched house on his new EP for Rat Life. Clash nabs '2 Simple', a raucous system rattler that seems to unite those primary influences alongside other more subtle shades...
Kimyan Law's fascinating new album 'Zawadi' is an exploration of rhythm. A trained drummer, the producer incorporates elements of pan-African culture (the title itself is Swahili) while surging ahead with a intensely single-minded passion.
This mix fuses a few of his key influences, while also utilising Kimyan Law's own production. Deep, heady electronic music, this comes highly recommended.

Eaves is gearing up to release new album 'Verloren' - 'lost', in German - and it's breaks apart electronic structures to explore the relationship between sound and form.
16 fascinating tracks, we've opted for 'Edgelands' - chafing against the norm, it's a curiously abstract piece of digital production.
WotNot continue their 'Dancefloor Sweets' series with a new EP, comprising four brand new system surprises. Danvers supplies 'Hoxton 203', a loose-knit groove with just a subtle hint of Rhodes cutting through the mix. It's a dexterous gem, one that outlines the producer's nascent talent, and the sheer open-minded curatorial skills of WotNot.

Erstwhile Roll Deep OG @iamsyer has re-emerged at an opportune time; eagle eyed fans may have spotted him releasing a slew of gem-packed ‘Archive’ compilations on his Bandcamp page. The Dagenham producer and MC, known also as Syer Barz, developed a reputation as one of the hardest spitters on pirate radio back in the day. While production wise, he slots somewhere in between the aggy, adrenalised element of grime and the more melodic, out-there branch of the genre that producers have been toying with recently. If you’ve been tuning into J-Cush’s recent Rinse sets or any of the @BoxedLDN shows, you’ll have probably heard Syer's new wheezing instrumental ‘Mushrooms’, which has just been released alongside five others on Cush’s @LitCityTrax and is a must-have for fans of both the original sound and new, spidering mutations of grime. Each track on his Clash mix features Syer in some form, whether it’s on the mic over Danny Weed and Wiley productions or his own instrumentals, and takes us all the way back to the sound of mid noughties London tower blocks.
Roommates are Spirt and Da Saül, two sonic voyagers who return once more to Paris based Word Up Records for a quickfire EP.
'Shaman Journey' is a lush, deep, expansive piece of electronic music, that at times touches on disco's outer reaches while losing itself in digital bliss.

The dubplate fanatic duo, Jamie Schildhauer and Paul White, have been mining the low end since around 2011, recently signing to the renowned bass/dubstep label for a couple of single releases, but are now offering up their debut full-length. The longplayer sees the pair team up with Jack Gates, Gantz, Total Science and Riya — and if we tell you there's seven (deadly) tracks on the LP, we probably don't need to tell you what they're called. He’s now packaged up a brand new mix for our series, that takes a load of his own coveted bootlegs and reworks (including a ‘ReLiff’-ed version of Capo Lee’s ‘Liff’) and positioned them next to a bunch of glistening instrumentals and off-the-hook vocal cuts.

Leeds producer Tafazwa Tawonezvi made a massive impression with follow-up tracks like 'Gonna Be Mine' and ‘Butterflies’ that made their way steadily into the collective consciousness. We're seeing bassline elements creep ever further into underground electronic music at the moment, with artists like Tarquin teasing out bassline-oriented bangers on Unknown To The Unknown, so it seemed like a good idea for the producer to helm a brand new - though decidedly old skool in its focus - mix. Amid a maelstrom of electronic sound and crushed beats the title cut revolves around the soulful sample: "We make this prayer to you..." Well, Clash has a prayer of its own. Jozef K and Winter Son have pieced together a very special DJ Mix, focusing on the creative partnership that exists between them. Exclusively comprised of their own material, it acts as a neat summation of what's come before, and also points the way to the future.

We thought it was high time for him to piece together a mix for us, and that’s exactly what the Manchester dub enthusiast has done. He’s blended together some stone-cold classics (Loefah’s ‘Disko Rekah’), some newbies (Fekky’s ‘Way Too Much’), with some serious dubplate business for a heads-down hour of 140.

There are almost infinite ways to approach a DJ mix. In our experience, Clash has found that most producers tend to focus on what will work the dancefloor, a showcase of their skills on a system. New York artist Elliot Moss, though, insisted on something rather more personal. A producer and songwriter of real depth, Elliot managed to flow between LCD Soundsystem and Phillip Glass in a completely natural manner.

In the hands of Will Saul and Komon, 'Give 2 U' is de-constructed to mere fragments of sound, then pieced together as a future-minded roller.

There’s no master-plan in terms of the tone of the mix, but I tend to veer towards the murkier end of the musical spectrum. It’s one of the only mixes I’ve done digitally, as all my vinyl is in storage while I move cities, but it suits this mix of styles anyway. Particularly strong artists for me this year or so have been Hype Williams, Colin Stetson and Actress and they’re all represented one way or another.”

Though still very much renowned for his techno back catalogue and work alongside Atkins and May, Saunderson has always been a distinctive artist in his own right, refusing to be shaped by one genre. Tracks by fellow Detroit luminary Stacey Pullen and Mathew Jonson’s Cobblestone Jazz project are featured on the mix, but then as a cheeky nod to his legacy, Saunderson dives back into techno territory for the end of the mix, finishing with a cluster of varied, beefy techno edits of several Ben Sims’ tracks, under Saunderson’s own Reese moniker. It’s a masterful touch.
