Your roots go deep. Life is lived in constant motion requiring a perpetual balancing act amidst crashing waves…both the refreshing and the destructive. Our life must be stabilized from within by deeply-rooted beliefs that go beyond feelings. It is about finding strength to fight for who we are, who we are becoming, and who we have set out to be. Uncertainty may come along with challenges and hardships, but you have the same root system that kept you firmly planted before…in the good, the bad, and the in-between. The fact is that your roots have gotten stronger, reached deeper, and have kept you upright throughout your journey. Tune in, won’t you?

Never fear, I'm still here!

The last several weeks have been quite contemplative and have given me the opportunity to refocus and re-imagine how I want this podcast to grow moving forward. To that end, I explain why #TheDeemsList will now be a weekly wrap-up and I expound on these 3 takeaways:

1.) Common decency does NOT have to leave our dialogue.

2.) Sarcasm and comedy MUST be protected.

3.) Resist the boxes!

I know you'll appreciate this episode, especially given the state of our world. Tune in, won’t you?

I share inspiring takeaways from my recent time out West.

While visiting God’s Country, the freedom was palpable as well as this sense of responsibility for you, your family, and your community. There was a pragmatism of elected leaders governing with people instead of lording over them. After all, the authority of the states are over the federal government. More importantly, the authority of the people are over both. We should probably remind more elected "leaders" of this fact.

Our roots as Americans are wrapped up in the cowboy spirit...grit, determination, success, and protecting what matters. This is why resistance against Govt tyranny and overreach is gaining so much traction today, even more this time around. Big Govt is bad, and we should’ve already learned that lesson by watching our neighbors up north and across the pond. Freedom is still thriving in America even if it's hard to see in your own backyard. It’s up to us to keep it no matter the cost.

I hope you'll find the cowboy, or cowgirl, inside you…especially in these trying times. Tune in, won’t you?

A growth mindset insists on effective disagreement...while also learning to evolve when your opinion is wrong.

The worst thing to experience in a disagreement is "emotional entitlement." In a world filling with "safe spaces" and where college students need to pet soft animals to make it through post-election days, society can seem too far gone. But there is hope! If only we learn to effectively engage with those who dissent and detract, we’ll create growth opportunities for each of us. Empathy is the key to connection. And iron sharpens iron. So resist a "safe space society" and remember that disagreement doesn’t define enemies. Rather, it's good and shows us our opportunities for growth. Tune in, won’t you?

Summer break is here!

This is our 80th episode together! Thanks for making a dream come true. While we’re taking most of July off for summer break, I come to you from my show prep notebook to share top takeaways that I know will enrich your life. In this episode, I've outlined a few lessons that have stuck out the most since starting this show. I think you'll find them refreshingly honest and save them as practical advice for your day-to-day. Be prepared. Always.

In this episode, we do a practical deep-dive into how I've learned to prepare for meetings. Whether it's a formal business meeting, casual coffee, dating happy hour, or dinner with the in-laws, you’ll find this episode to be helpful. Here are my "5 Steps to Curating the Perfect Meeting:"

  1. Define why. (the O.D.O.)

  2. Do your research. (know thy audience)

  3. Anticipate anything.

  4. Define next steps.

  5. Be YOU.

I extrapolate on each of these and share personal experiences for how I’ve come to these action steps. As someone who has been in thousands of meetings, this episode comes from tried-and-true proof (informed by a fair amount of embarrassing failures). Knowing how to prepare for the perfect meeting will set you a part and ensure that every meeting you're in serves YOU and YOUR goals. Tune in, won’t you?

On this special Fourth of July episode, we celebrate our cherished freedoms by recounting the beautiful poem that led to our national anthem: "The Star-Spangled Banner." Not just its well-known first verse, but we visit all four. It was famously written by Francis Scott Key as the smoke was clearing following the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Old Glory was flying triumphantly then and still does today. Our nation, her flag, and her national anthem all remain beacons of hope to the world. Over this holiday weekend, they will reminder us of who we are once again. Happy Independence Day, America! Tune in, won't you?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

In this brief episode, I share a part of my morning routine with you by reading from The Daily Stoic. Along with other morning readings, meditations, and mantras (and stretching), these habits set me up to conquer the day instead of risking the day conquering me. Hope is not a strategy! As I mention, this week's episode is shorter than usual but I know you'll find it to be just as valid and impactful for your life. Safe travels to those who are also back out and traveling across this great country. FYI, this episode builds upon our recent episodes that have also relied on the wisdom of the Stoics. Stillness amidst the chaos is exactly what you need.

In this episode, we talk about the beloved Sunday drive, morning meditations, and even contemplative prayer retreats (yes, the silent ones). In a world of 24/7 news, nonstop social media feeds, and the constant checking emails, it’s not hard to see why silence and stillness are not just useful but needed. Whether you’re seeking that still, small voice or simply looking to escape the chaos of a life's busyness, choosing stillness may be the most effective decision you can make. Tune in, won’t you?

Many have turned to the wisdom of the Stoics for inspiration on how to do life on their own terms. In this episode, I read through “50 Very Short Rules for a Good Life from the Stoics” by Ryan Holiday. A few of my favorites from the list:

    1. Remember you have the power to have no opinion.
    1. “The best revenge is not to be like that.” –Marcus Aurelius
    1. Focus on process, not outcomes.
    1. Make a little progress each day.
    1. The obstacle is the way.

I think you’ll gain a lot from these if you truly apply them to your lives…one day at a time. Don’t talk about it, be about it. Tune in, won’t you?

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

This weekend marks the official start of summertime. I take a break from our usual week-in-review and reminisce about the summers of yesteryear. I explore how we, the people, are charged with preserving what summertime means for the generations to come. What were your favorite summertime memories, especially while growing up? Let me know. On this episode, I come to you live and on location from the Southern Retreat as the Deems Family kicks off summertime while inviting you to do the same. Tune in, won't you?

Whether business or personal, you must ensure that incentives are aligned for optimum success.

In this episode, we discuss how incentives must be aligned…in businesses, sales funnels, marriages, relationships, first jobs, startups, unemployment benefits, churches, religion, and so on. Too many times there is a misalignment of incentives causing strain and ultimately failure. Without proper understanding, along with a healthy dose of transparency, problems associated with incentive misalignment are doomed to repeat themselves. Avoid the insanity. Tune in, won't you?

Authenticity matters now more than ever. Come out from behind your mask(s)!

In this episode, we visit the archives of truth to remind ourselves to stop hiding and to start living out our best lives. There's tremendous beauty in the differences we all bring to the world, especially as we uncover innovative ways to align through harmony and respect in this mosaic (not melting pot) that we're building...piece by piece, shoulder to shoulder, better not bitter. This is part of what I call "Midwestern Pragmatism." Together we can truly create something more beautiful and inspiring if we simply take off the mask(s) and live in hot pursuit of truth. We are experiencing the result of a generation that hasn't lived through real struggle. To compensate, many have created faux struggles and force us to hear about them.

In this episode, I share the story of a true American hero: Ned E. Seath, Lance Corporal, 3rd Marine Division, Dec '65 - July '66. He knew struggle and overcame tremendous adversity in the jungles of Vietnam where saved the lives of his fellow Marines. His story of valor and courage gives great perspective to what it means to be a hero and reminds us of how overused that word is today. It took 44 years, but eventually his fellow Marines saw to it that the decorated combat veteran was noticed for his bravery. In addition to his 4 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star, LCpl Seath was also awarded the Navy Cross. Tune in, won't you?

The minimalist movement teaches us more than just reducing our physical waste.

In this episode, we explore how minimalists harnesses the time-tested truths of boundaries and discipline. Maybe you've chosen to live that #VanLife or have downsized to a flat in a great city's urban core. Perhaps you're redefining life after a divorce or a career shift. Regardless, intentionally pursuing less will ultimately reward you with more. Finding new "creature comforts" in your discomfort is a sign of growth and progress, and something I believe we should examine often in ourselves. Not being inundated by the constant stream of distractions surrounding us is a choice. After all, your life doesn't have to feel like a pinball moving throughout a pinball machine from one bumper to another ding to a catapult and so on with each passing moment; you're in control. Reminder: Trust determines your level of transparency, and trust must be earned.

In this episode, I highlight how being authentic does NOT equate to being transparent. Boundaries matter and intentions matter, especially in an ever-connected, social media-influenced world. Change is the one constant in our lives, and it's important to recognize the value of those relationships that encourage growth and personal progress. After all, there are countless characters ready to manipulate and use you for their cause without consideration of your own. Be wise, be guarded, and be real...all while being true to your authentic self and cherishing those who have earned your trust. Tune in, won't you?

We are being forced a faux narrative that the margin is the story. This is a distraction.

In this episode, we uncover how distractions from reality are found in the margins. From dating to career pursuits, political discourse to societal observations, we're losing perspective of what actually matters. The ability to achieve real progress is not found on the fringes but where life overlaps for all of us. There's far more that unites us than divides us. Left or Right, it's all of us versus the power-hungry, power-grabbing authoritarians, and the sooner we realize it the sooner we take back our country. After all, the main story is never written in the margin. Tune in, won't you?

It's remarkable the extent to which the Left will go to punish America for having elected Donald Trump. Democrats continue to force us over their knees and spank us for choosing an America first agenda.

In this episode, we discuss how Progressives (read: Marxists) are forcing their agenda on America by co-opting woke corporations. Need we remind these corporations of the place that gave them their start...or even taxpayer-funded bailout(s)? Georgia's voter integrity bill is the political cover various players are using to change the rules in American politics, attack the filibuster in the Senate (don't forget, the filibuster is now racist), and rip more than $100MM of economic activity from ATL by the MLB moving its All-Star game later this summer. The irony is that the game has now moved to Denver, CO - a place with less opportunities to vote than the GA bill provides, and a place that already requires voter ID. Oh, and don't forget the race card that is front-and-center in this phony outrage...the MLB is boycotting a place that's 51% black while relocating to one that's just 9% black. But who are we to question their narratives and give you the facts? Tune in, won't you?

It's okay to unplug and focus on what really matters.

In this episode, I share a recent, chance encounter that I had with my new friend: a 72-year-old man named Richard from Medina, Ohio. We both ordered the same flip phone from Patriot Mobile and a mix up led to me getting his phone and vice versa. That, in turn, led to a great phone conversation and new friendship. That refreshing conversation sparked much more thought about the life he lives in 2021 compared to most of us. We can choose a freer life without all the digital tethers to which we knowingly (and even unknowingly) subject ourselves, if we only make such freedoms a priority. I share more on that and discuss the beauty of phone calls over texts, songs from yesteryear taking on deeper meanings today, and much more. Tune in, won't you?

Despite how it may seem, we are in the majority and American values will always prevail.

In this episode, it's more of a fireside chat as we freely discuss the topics you have emailed the Chief; from everything bad happening around us having to fit a race-baiting narrative to the differences between our fellow man being exacerbated for the purposes of dividing us further, we all have a lot of concerns. The good news is that FAR MORE unites us than divides us, and we have each other. We need each other, especially in this fight to save America. Tune in, won't you?

Some of the greatest abilities are just hidden, at least upon first glance.

In this episode, we discuss the beauty and opportunities that have emerged from people with disabilities. From Camp Jened in 1971 to achieving the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) in 1990, the inspiring story of a few passionate leaders outlined in the Oscar-nominate film "Crip Camp" is inspiring. Enough with the distractions. America remains the greatest country on Earth.

In this episode, we discuss how distractions continue to lull us into emotional responses while forgetting that facts and logic still matter. America is not a racist country, we don't have to care about the royals (thanks to patriots, especially between 1765-1783 AD), and we don't have to accept elected officials as puffed-up, parental figures. Enough is enough and it's time to eliminate the distractions and expose them for what they are: emotional bait. Don't get sucked into the game. And tune in, won't you?

Authenticity matters now more than ever, so come out from behind your mask(s).

In this episode, we discuss the masks we grew up thinking we had to wear and those we were conditioned to believe we must keep on. Stop hiding and start living out your truest, best self. Counter to what Leftists would have you believe, we are FAR MORE alike than we are different; we're all together on this journey called life, and we need the community of one another in big ways. Being a victim is the easy way out. Instead of pursuing a "melting pot" where individual identity is lost, I challenge us to be the greatest "mosaic" that has ever existed, the USA, by being unafraid, vulnerable, and courageous in the face of opposition. Our God has placed greatness inside each of us. Our Constitution protects our individual pursuits of said greatness. Together we can truly create something more beautiful and inspiring if we simply take off the mask(s). Tune in, won't you?

In this episode, we discuss how "wokeness" has given birth to a whole new generation of useful idiots and why nobody argues anymore.

Being a conservative is more important today than anytime in my lifetime. The Left continues to attack and push a false narrative of hopelessness that hinges on victimization. "You're a victim because ____" (fill in the blank, or they'll do it for you). Instead of encouraging the highest potential in each person so that they might cultivate and grow into producers in our society, optimism is crushed because it doesn't fit the path to victimhood that's been so cleverly laid out. This is what ultimately leads everyone to unchecked, increased control for Big Govt and it's cronies. Sadly, we're seeing this play out today in VERY big ways across our country.

This is why I'm a conservative and why you should be, too...especially now. Our nation has become inundated with perpetual victimization that focuses on giving handouts and placing limits instead of protecting an opportunity-rich environment where our best ideas can thrive. I want what's best for you regardless of your starting point, your politics, or your family's history. That's what makes me a conservative. Tune in, won't you?

In this episode, we discuss a saying I've had written on my bathroom mirror for the past year: "Don't limit your point of entry."

Watching Tampa Bay win over Kansas City in this year's Super Bowl, it wasn't hard to realize that Tom Brady is truly the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time). I began to ponder his rise to success and learned a lot about how Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, Jr. started out...and it wasn't at the top. His persistence and commitment to being his best started within himself, was supported by those around him, and has led to a remarkable story from which we all can learn. Tom's grit and the power of his routine reminded me of the many coaching sessions I've had with Dave Meltzer over the past year. Dave's comeback story is also one of determination. Chief among my takeaways from him is that saying on my mirror: "Don't limit your point of entry." I think you'll appreciate how their examples can inspire the story you're writing today. Are you a millennial or do you interact with millennials? (Hint: The answer is yes.)

In this episode, we talk about the Millennial generation. From getting thrown under the bus by our insecure GenX and Boomer colleagues at work, to being often mistaken as GenZ, there's a lot to unpack. Millennials turn 40 this year, which means we've grown up, have families of our own, and are dealing with the rather bad hand we've been dealt over the years. (Read: Great Recession, Pandemic, current political climate, etc.) Millennials are persevering regardless and the takeover is happening...ready or not. Tune in, won't you?

What would you like to have said in your eulogy?

In this episode, we talk about the importance of living life to the fullest—not waiting until we reach a "destination," but rather doing so while we're on this journey called life. Most of us won't reach some of our desired destinations...that's just human nature. Sadly, like my Aunt at age 51, your story may end too soon and then what? I discuss what it was like to piece together my Aunt's eulogy earlier this month and how that process of exploring some great stories has compelled me to live a fuller, richer, truer story starting now. I also discuss the Hulu original "In & Of Itself" where it highlights why we live out certain, specific identities instead of accepting and portraying our truest self...that we are the sum of ALL our parts.

Tune in, won't you?

Systems make the world go 'round; they're important and all around us - big and small, known and ignored. In this episode, we talk about the importance of systems, especially our engagement within them. From how you've systematized your morning coffee routines to how you navigate your daily commutes; systems keep order and allow all of us to know how to engage with one another and the even world-at-large. Systems can change, but (again) within and by a system that's agreed to by everyone - A.K.A. rules of engagement. Think of when you were first introduced to a system...I doubt you even realized it. Millions of airline passengers traveling each day, the Dewey Decimal system in libraries, firefighters on the scene of a fire, manufacturers sending goods to stores based on barcode data - ALL of these require countless systems to effectively and efficiently serve the greater good. Our constitutional republic requires that, too.  Systems matter. Tune in, won't you?   I'd love to hear from you, especially on this episode's topic. Trumpism without Trump is about to become a reality in US politics. How will the "Religion of Trumpism" look in this new phase?

In this episode, we talk about the current state of DC politics after last week's insurrection at the US Capitol by Trump supporters just days before Inauguration Day. While Trump supporters and most conservatives have become accustomed to censorship and unfair rules of engagement by "tolerant" elites, Big Tech, and the media, have we also become desensitized to the harmful rhetoric and bullying tone of President Donald Trump? We examine how he rose to political power by leveraging his celebrity and wealth while also systematically eliminating each of his "establishment" GOP opponents in the 2016 primary season. After attending a virtual talk by Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright, their wisdom from days of diplomacy and nation-building seem very needed in our country right now. We also talk about the Enneagram Type 8 and how Trump is playing to the worst of his personality. We've made through tough times before, and we'll do it again!

Tired of letting a No (or lots of Noes) get in the way of a Yes? You're not alone. In this episode, we discuss a pervasive phenomena known as the "Nashville No." Whether you're a musician, songwriter, startup entrepreneur, or simply looking for career advancement in Nashville, you've likely experienced it. It feels a lot like a Yes, but is really you being strung along. It's time to resist the "Nashville No" and define your own Yes. As an example of finding a Yes that matters, recent graduate Pete Davis inspires us with a speech from his Harvard Law commencement in 2018 (link below). Whether you're in Nashville, Belpre, San Diego, or Chișinău, you get to define the Yeses and say goodbye to the Noes.

2020 has solidified the importance of thinking for ourselves. Of course this is nothing new, but the idea has been exacerbated by events of the past year.

In this episode, we explore an essay published by programmer, writer, and investor Paul Graham (link below) that's titled "How To Think For Yourself." The essay is thought-provoking, challenging, and one that I believe everyone should read...especially if they desire to control their lives proactively instead of reactively. To that end, Graham speaks about the difference between independent-minded versus conventional-minded people; Graham lays out his three components of independent-mindedness:

1. Fastidiousness about truth;

2. Resistance to being told what to think;

3. Curiosity.

So, are you independent-minded or conventional-minded? It's worth your personal examination.

It all started by watching "Miracle on 34th Street" and hearing "Sleigh Ride" by the Boston Pops Orchestra on SiriusXM. We need to preserve our culture, and it's under attack by Big Tech censorship and limiting your access to media.

In this episode, we talk about "The Paradox of Choice" by Barry Schwartz and how we often miss out on gratification as we look for fulfillment from the multitude of options at our fingertips. Despite the countless options for how to consume music, news, movies, and TV, have we given up control? Most media are being consumed digitally with no physical hardcopies. Shouldn't that cause concern...especially in our world of Big Tech censorship? What happens when the truth starts being limited because it doesn't serve the interests of a corporate board? We explore this and more!

If you're gonna to take life lessons from someone, make sure they've lived a little.

In this episode, we hear some of the lessons shared by 87-year-old Byron Wien who first published his list upon turning 80. "Network intensely; When you meet someone new, treat that person as a friend; Read all the time; The hard way is always the right way." Those are just a few from his list that you'll enjoy. Also, in tribute to the "Hard-Nosed Economist, Generous Soul," the late Walter Williams, we review his last published piece on the decline of public education for blacks in our urban cores. We wrap the episode with the absurdity of Seattle city lawmakers considering the decriminalization of nearly 90% of crimes wrecking havoc in that city.

When did mask wearing become a religion? We follow the data on masks, lockdowns, and the financial incentives of COVID for hospitals. You need to hear this, and you probably won't like it.

In this episode, we explore the questions you're already asking yourself. "Do masks really work?" And, "Are we really following the science with all these mandates?" Coronavirus, as presented to us by national and global healthcare and business professionals...alongside their politicians...has been infecting us for nearly a year. Because of this, we haven't had to rely on the early modeling (those models projecting 2 million plus deaths) for a long time. Each new case provides additional data, which should be informing our collective knowledge of the coronavirus. So why isn't our response to the virus evolving as quickly as we learn? Instead, our "leaders" keep pursuing the same measures that we already know don't work while telling us to expect different results this time. This should be alarming to each of us, especially when you follow what the science is saying. We do a deep dive into the data and the data says:

- Masks don't work (https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/abs/10.7326/M20-6817 AND https://www.theblaze.com/op-ed/horowitz-massive-danish-study-on-surgical-masks-found-no-statistically-significant-benefit-against-covid-19)

- Shutting down schools is killing kids, literally (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2772834?fbclid=IwAR2mraXallbAmgXV_mXjRAHvyTiLrs2jb9G6HF7AkatpBJk2BHMUWLv3F6M)

- Lockdowns don't work (https://www.theblaze.com/conservative-review/horowitz-comparing-europe-us-evidence-clear-lockdowns-dont-work)

- Hospitals are financially incentivized to manipulate COVID numbers (https://www.theblaze.com/op-ed/horowitz-three-ways-the-covid-hospital-data-is-being-inflated)

Are you ready for more gratitude in your life? We discuss our Thanksgiving traditions and get a reminder that there's a lot for which to be grateful despite any darkness around us.

In this episode, we're reminded that "Gratitude is the beginning of all virtues" (thanks Cicero). We also harken back to the first POTUS, George Washington, and his famous Thanksgiving Proclamation given in 1789 (link below). And, of course, we couldn't do this episode without reminiscing about the Thanksgiving traditions, kitchen smells, and debates between stuffing vs dressing that we get to enjoy with our families and loved ones.

Friendly Reminder: you already have a signed permission slip to celebrate Thanksgiving this year however you want...it's called the US Constitution.

Community matters now more than ever before, but it looks and feels very different than in previous generations. We explore why.

In this episode, we discuss how the definition of community is evolving quickly. With government-imposed lockdowns and an emergence of social media platforms, how are we protecting the life-giving attributes of community? The decline of social capital isn't new - it's been happening since the 1950s and in big ways. How has social engineering replaced the social contract of decency and thoughtful dialogue? What is our "new normal?" How do we create it in our own lives?

In this episode, we explore what the "new normal" is for each of us. Not only as a result of COVID or political uncertainty, but in our communities and personal lives. A lot of festivals, annual events, family gatherings, little league games, and other cherished cornerstones in our lives have been canceled or postponed, but have we truly counted the cost? These are just of few of the topics explored in this episode as we are challenged to create our own "new normal" in this season.

Where did all the hobbies go, especially when we need them most?

In this episode of The Eric Deems Show, we're challenged to look beyond the guilt and excuses of not enough time so we can get back to a life that's rich with hobbies. Lost on where to start? Nostalgia can be a great catalyst for those hobbies that will be most fulfilling to you. For me, it's mowing the lawn (think Eric's Lawn Service circa 2000 AD). I also give a brief tribute to a great influence on my life and countless others, Rush Limbaugh.

Thank YOU for tuning in! I'd love to hear from you directly. If you have a comment, show idea, or answer to a question posed in the show, reach out at Chief@EricDeemsShow.com or on social media: @EricDeemsShow.

Sure it's been fun rambling---thanks for indulging me---but I've been spending more time thinking through ways to bring you more thoughtful and applicable content. In the meantime, stay tuned and enjoy this episode where we cover a little politics, a couple business ventures, my newlywed life, and more!
