The MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) return to Germany after a ten-year absence and set to warm up the A-list of international superstars prior to the event is Germany’s own club and festival talent, DJ Paytric.
The 2022 EMA’s will take place 13 November at the PSD BANK DOME in Düsseldorf where a who’s who of musical talent, including nominees Adele, Beyoncé and Harry Styles, will vie for the coveted awards.
In the run-up to the event, Paytric – whose real name is Patrick Strunk and is known on both the national and international DJ scene – will provide musical accompaniment at MTV Music Week. The supporting programme includes four dates for MTV Breakfast Club at the me and all hotels in Düsseldorf where the versatile DJ will demonstrate his skills during an extended breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. where he will feature songs from the various award nominees.

Wir befinden uns nicht nur im dritten Jahr der weltweiten Pandemie, sondern auch im dritten Jahr, in dem die Event-, Gastro- und Club Szene zum Erliegen gekommen ist. Die Menschen der Veranstaltungsbranche wie Barkeeper*innen und auch DJs suchen nach Alternativen, um ihre Einkünfte zu sichern und letztendlich auch das Nachtleben zu erhalten.
Ein DJ aus Mechernich in der Eifel denkt langfristig und nutzt die Zeit mitunter, um seine eigene Marke zu stärken. So macht er in den ersten Monaten des Lockdowns, Dank Streaming Formaten und Onlineveranstaltungen, auf die unverhältnismäßige Behandlung von Clubs und Bars aufmerksam. Für einen dieser Auftritte mit virtuellem Publikum verschlug es Paytric, so der Künstlername von Patrick Strunk, ins menschenleere RheinEnergie Stadion.
Im Sommer 2021 ruft Paytric dann einen neuen Podcast ins Leben. Anders als bei früheren Formaten geht es bei der Spotify Show „We Got 5 On It“ ausschließlich um Musik und die Entdeckung neuer Songs, zu denen seine Fans tanzen und grooven können. Die Aufgabe und den Beruf des DJs bringt er so von der Tanzfläche gezwungenermaßen ins Internet und für jede*n verfügbar.
Die Zeit der gefüllten Hallen, endlosen Nächten und lukrativen Bookings, wie es im Jargon heißt, liegt immer noch in ferner Zukunft und so entsteht schon das nächste Projekt: ein außergewöhnliches DJ Set vor 4 Flammenwerfern, einer 12qm LED-Wand und mit über 70 Moving Heads (bewegliche Scheinwerfer) – Aufbauten, wie sie sonst nur in den Clubs auf Ibiza und den großen Festivals in Miami zu finden sind. Nun ohne Livepublikum, dafür als Video bei YouTube zu finden.
Eine zusätzliche Schwierigkeit, die Paytric sich selbst auferlegt, ist der genreübergreifende Mix von Liedern, die eher untypisch für einen DJ sind. Statt ausschließlich elektronischer, fast stimmloser Musik und dröhnenden Bässen spielt Paytric nun 30 Songs in 60 Minuten, welche die letzten 4 Dekaden abdecken. Von Queen, Muse und den Red Hot Chili Peppers über Fettes Brot und die Beastie Boys bis hin zu Marteria, Daft Punk und sogar Marilyn Manson.
Das Equipment zu der sehenswerten Produktion stammt von Laserframe und Creative Sounds Veranstaltungstechnik, die zusammen unter dem Namen „Big Boys Studios“ schon Bühnen und Streaming Studios für Stars wie Felix Jaehn, Felix Kröcher oder Xatar bauten. Hinschauen lohnt sich und vielleicht tanzen wir bald schon alle vor den Bildschirmen im Wohnzimmer zum Sound von DJ Paytric.

Bis vor ein paar Monaten war es noch möglich, dies hautnah in Clubs zu erleben. Aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie sind die Clubs dicht, die Szene sucht nach Alternativen, um Partygänger weiterhin unterhalten zu können. Eine dieser Alternativen ist, dass die DJs in leeren Stadien auflegen und die Sessions den Anhängern per Livestream anzubieten. So spielten bisher unter anderem Paul van Dyk im Signal-Iduna-Park in Dortmund oder DJ Moguai in der Arena auf Schalke vor leeren Rängen.
Wenn am Freitag, 3. Juli, um 20 Uhr via Livestream die Aufzeichnung der DJ-Session aus dem Rhein-Energie-Stadion in Köln ausgestrahlt wird, wird DJ Paytric einer der beiden DJs sein. Der aus Mechernich kommende DJ ist bereits seit über 20 Jahren eine feste Größe in der Club-Szene und hat sich auch in der Region einen Namen gemacht.
Das Gefühl, nun in einem leeren Stadion aufzulegen, war für ihn zunächst gewöhnungsbedürftig: „Es ist normalerweise sehr energiegeladen. Das, was man nach vorne gibt, kommt ja dann von den Gästen zurück. Wenn man in einem Stadion spielt, gerade in die Musik vertieft ist und dann nach oben auf die leeren Zuschauerränge blickt, ist das schon komisch“, gibt der Mechernicher zu.
Seine Arbeit hat Patrick Strunk, so heißt DJ Paytric im realen Leben, aber nicht großartig umgestellt: „Wir wollen uns als Künstler ja so darstellen wie sonst auch.“ Lediglich das Equipment fällt nicht so groß wie beispielsweise bei Festivals aus. Die Zuhörer können sich aber trotzdem auf eine angemessene Atmosphäre freuen. „Es wird genauso wie im Club“, verspricht DJ Paytric, der seit Ende der 90er-Jahre Resident-DJ des Warehouse in Köln ist.

Wie oft ich mir einfach nur denke: Ach wärst du doch in einer anderen Zeit geboren. Wie geil wäre es bei Woodstock 1969 gewesen? Oder mit Lederjacke und Tolle in den 50ern? Nun ja, jetzt haben wir 2017 und eigentlich bin ich dann doch ziemlich froh genau im Hier und Jetzt zu leben. Allein musikalisch gesehen, genieße ich es einfach immer und überall auf jeden belieben Track zugreifen zu können. Durch Plattformen wie Soundcloud oder YouTube ist es mir möglich fast alles zu hören - den unbekannten Rapper aus Atlanta genauso wie den Remix eines DJs aus Castrop-Rauxel oder Tracks, die nichtmal Shazam erkennt. Trotz dieser Möglichkeit läuft im Club und im Radio immer nur die selbe Scheiße, was für die restliche Musikwelt einfach zu schade ist.
Dies haben der liebe Paytric, seinerseits DJ und Musikliebhaber aus reinstem Herzen, und ich (Jan) zum Anstoss genommen einen Mix für euch zusammenzustellen, der genau diese Songs in den Vordergrund stellen soll. Songs, die niemand so wirklich kennt, aber die es aber einfach Wert sind gehört zu werden. Musikalisch können die Tracks in jedem Fall mit dem Mainstream mithalten. Tanzt einfach drauf los, egal ob im Club, im Auto, beim Joggen oder sonst wo: Mit unserem Mix seid ihr in jeder Lebenslage gut bedient. Mit dabei sind unveröffentlichte Tracks von Weltstars, Coverversionen, unbekannte Remixe, die besser als die Originalen sind und vieles mehr wie beispielsweise der Übertrack von Ace Tee, Tami Tamaki und natürlich Theophilus London.
Dieser Mix soll erst der Anfang von vielen weiteren sein.
