Re-Globalization or De-Globalization? Will the countries in the world grow together or slow individually.
Does Globalization have the legs to stand the onslaught of political turbulence, geopolitical fractures, pandemic impacted supply chains, tariff wars and the first land war in Europe in decades? Seems disruptive! Can the interconnectedness between the countries created by the movement of goods and services coupled with capital, people, data, ideas and cross-border innovation keep driving the bonds of Globalization? Information technology has bought the world together and has developed a very strong connection and dependencies where no region is self-sufficient for all its needs. Will the fate of Globalization be decided by Governments or Multinational companies with their impact on economies? The combined Market cap of the top five companies by market cap is almost equal to the GDP of the bottom more than 150 countries. Who will impact the future of Globalization?
Would Capitalism drive the Net Zero initiatives for Climate Change, or it will be in conflict. It has a major role to play in the social cause which is so important for sustenance of our planet. With such a concerted effort by governments across the globe, Capital markets can magnify the efforts by creating financial models to support the need of the society as well create growth driven by innovation.
Listen to a discussion on Global Order Reshaping in current scenario: As the global economy was managing to slowly recover from the disruption caused by the Pandemic, the world got shocked by the events unfolding in Ukraine with apprehension, dismay, and fear. This conflict has shaken the roots of the global peace and security system and has triggered a massive humanitarian crisis. The crisis in Ukraine is challenging the core principle of UN charter for international peace and security order. Global economy was already battling with high inflation, rising energy costs, supply chain disruptions and other economic impacts from the pandemic, now this conflict further complicates it with possibility of multiple geo political fractures.
Listen to Oxford published author J.R. Klein discuss the threat to Globalization. The war in Ukraine has suddenly changed the quantum of geopolitical risks. The firms will need to respond to the shock by reassessing security-related risks and changes in the structure of supply chains. Since the capital is in place and wage differentials across countries exist, it is possible to absorb the shock and create a gradual change. It will probably affect different product categories and segments differently. This whole process however may not be able to drive a reversal of globalization, which can only happen if it is supported by pronounced government intervention.

Listen to Wikitongues cofounder and director Daniel Bögre Udell and programs director Kristen Tcherneshoff on how languages impact our society. Today some 7,000 languages are spoken and signed around the world, but acute challenges facing linguistic communities—from forced assimilation to political exclusion—could make 3,000 of those languages fall silent by the end of this century. In response, Wikitongues is building a “language revitalization accelerator” that gives marginalized people resources to launch mother-tongue projects in their communities. As someone committed to your career and your industry, you should worry if your company doesn’t look like it’s trying to bite its own tail, with investments into technology and taking business risks. If your company is not investing in eating itself fast enough, you can be sure that a tech or hyphen-tech company will have your company as a snack. Your company is not a safe haven. It will either eat itself, or be eaten by technology. Because the technology treadmill runs very fast, the new jobs are not safe from obsolescence. So as an individual with a few decades of work left inside you, you have to learn to eat and reinvent yourself perpetually, like the ouroboros. In this fascinating talk, our frequent guest, Gaurav Rastogi, tells us why the ancient image of a snake biting its own tail will be the defining portrayal of careers in the decade to come.

This week in Global Business, Mahesh Joshi and Gaurav Rastogi are discussing A New Kind of Math, and how today’s leaders should have the ability to build “belief” in a yet unseen future. This requires having the power to suspend skepticism. Just as algebra begins with “let there be an X such that”...today’s leaders must have the ability to believe in a future that is different from today, in order to make that future happen. And so, despite failures like Theranos, we must learn to believe.
The future of work is continuous learning. How are the companies and employees computing their ROE, the Return on Education? Humanity's future depends on how well we transform the business of functional learning.
The term frontier markets was coined in 1992 by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and it referred to a subset of emerging markets. Subsequently, frontier indices was established by major providers like Standard & Poor’s, MSCI, Russell Investments and FTSE. The number of frontier markets in these indices ranges from 25 in the MSCI index to 41 in the Russell Frontier Index. The criteria for inclusion, is that it should not already be a component of any emerging market or developed market indices. They must also qualify on parameters such as its economic development, market accessibility, liquidity and foreign investment restrictions. Will the frontier markets be able to challenge the BRIC’s as the next growth opportunity with real economic development, or will they become yet another investment vehicle only for some time.
We have been discussing the Disruption in every industry in recent episodes. Today we have a very special guest, Professor Lalit Johri from the University of Oxford's Said Business School, talking with Global Business host Mahesh Joshi and our series guest, Gaurav Rastogi. Our guest this week brings us the perspective of a 1000+ years old University, and shows us how Universities must perform a dual role- one of transferring functional knowledge or technical skills, and another as seats of cultural learning. The importance of un-learning through peer-dialogue is pointed out emphatically in these times of rapid change. There has been a lot of innovation on imparting technical knowledge through new media, but education institutions must also continue innovate on their roles as culture and values bearers for the societies they work in.
Listen to an intriguing discussion on the role of failure on the road to success. Companies that try too hard to avoid failing inevitably crash and burn. Adopting a positive attitude towards work and failure allow us to make the most of opportunities. This week Gaurav Rastogi and the host, Mahesh Joshi, are talking about how to think of work as a “Failure Gym”. Just as we go to the gym to build our muscle tone and strength, we should use the power to fail as a way of building our strength. That’s what we learn from Jack Ma, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos- you can continue failing until you succeed.
For peak performance as a leader, get out of the yoga studio, and learn to become a Corporate Yogi. The future of human work is the subject of this week’s discussion. While others despair about the dystopia that technology will unleash, Gaurav and Mahesh are talking this week about how all the technology will finally give us time to pay attention to knowledge work that really matters.
Oil industry is under sharp focus. There is a lot of narrative for the increased role of renewable energy, and impact of Electric vehicles and self-driving vehicle on oil. All of these indicate a hard time for oil. With the focus on environmental issues and clean energy, is it the end of Oil? One could also say that Oil is also renewable energy. It just takes longer to renew.
Humans build culture and develop innovative technologies. What causes the distraction and disruptions which we are seeing now. Listen to the expert on March 21st 2018 at 9.00AM pacific time in discussion on the relationship of Human, culture, and Technology in causing disruption.
Leadership in the age of Distraction and Destruction has become very challenging with the old paradigms and time tested concepts being challenged, destroyed and replaced by new thinking. Several elements are creating a change in the management and leadership style. Rise of new media has created new media stars and a different and direct way of communication. It is allowing instant communication between the communicator and the receivers with open channel for communication both ways and that too can happen in full public glare where others can watch it and jump in at their will. Old play books for success are getting replaced with new innovative ideas. Old and ever successful companies are struggling to catch up with the growth rates of new innovative businesses. The new forms of power are emerging with new models of engagement and the New math. What should a leader do?
Goldman Sachs identified the “Next 11” (N-11), countries in 2005, as the next in line to become economic powerhouses. The main criteria used to identify these countries was the stability of the countries’ politics and fiscal and monetary policy. The other factors were the amount of trade barriers each country imposed and Quality of education in each country. They have large growing young population. In future can these eleven countries become as influential as the BRIC’S, particularly in the investment sector, and acquire a significant share of global GDP. With their size and differences in these countries, will it be possible for the N-11 to cooperate as closely together as the BRIC’S and be the next source of growth of Global GDP.
Destructions in the age of Distraction is becoming quite prominent. The old paradigms and time tested concepts are being challenged, destroyed and replaced by new thinking. Geo political shifts with rising Nationalism are creating a possible crises for Globalization. New Start-ups are replacing the Industrial giants as the top market companies. The question in every ones mind is What are these destructions and how they impact us all.
The Industrial Age is over. Some argue that we are entering the Fourth Industrial Revolution, while others call it the Information Age or Digital Age. But my guest today has convincing evidence that the right name for our times is “The Distraction Age”.
In 2001 the world began talking about the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - as potential powerhouses of the world economy. The term was coined by economist Jim O'Neill, who has now identified the Mint countries - Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey - as emerging economic giants. Another term in play is TIMP’s As was the case with BRICS, and is with MINT, term TIMP’s came from the investment community. Bob Turner, the chief investment officer at Turner Investment partners in USA coined the term TIMP’s. He was convinced that these nations have favourable demographics, the economies are strengthening and so are the political institutions. These economies have qualities that should keep them and their stock markets expanding rapidly and profitably. Listen to the discussions with Dr Celly on next growth markets. Will it be TIMP or MINT?
We live in an age of distraction and destruction. The old order is being destroyed before our eyes, whether it’s politics, technology, business or economics. But it’s the distractions that pose a larger threat. We are distracted by constant change, the frenetic news cycles and the weaponization of the technologies of mass distraction, such as social media and 24x7 communications. Listen to Corporate Yogi, Ekras Gorakh; Mr Gaurav Rastogi elaborate on what leaders need to do to balance Emotional, Professional,Physical and Spiritual elements for delivering an optimum performance.
The Medical Virtualist! Is It Time for a New Medical Specialty? As per WHO, In 2015 there were an estimated 43 million global health workers, including physicians and nurses/midwives. Basis a threshold of 4.45 skilled health professionals per 1000 population, estimated needs-based shortage of health-care workers globally would be about 17.4 million of which almost 2.6 million are doctors and over 9 million are nurses and midwives. Available statistics show that over 44% of WHO Member States report to have less than 1 physician per 1000 population. Something dramatic needs to happen to address this issue. It seems the technology is coming to rescue here. There is a unique market opening up, driven by technology. It is making health care availability instant and access to the best of the resources from any where in the world. It is telehealth. it has the ability to address the top issues of Health care sector; Cost, Care Delivery, Innovation, Operations and Regulatory compliance.
Listen to Allen a noted industry expert, author and a sought-after industry commentator in discussion on “How the best companies stay relevant in a Fast- Changing World” The quantum and speed of change occurring all around us is amazing. It is happening in our life style as well as businesses and environment. The new technological innovations and business models are threatening the existing stable players. One must be very careful in scanning the environment. Must keep an eye on where the disruption is coming from. Several new successful companies have come up at the expense of existing stable and proven businesses. It is noticeable that the new market leaders do not have or own the product most of the times. It is how they have created business models to take out the past market leaders who were not able to foresee the upcoming changes and adapt to it.
In the Digital age, E commerce is leading the growth in businesses. Companies like Amazon have become house hold names and are changing the buying behaviours of consumers in very innovative ways. If we consider Amazon as the representative of e commerce platforms and very deservedly so, one can leverage it for growth of its business. The size of Amazon is bigger than GDP of 130 economies of the world. It seems like an economy at number 61 in the world GDP ranking. Amazon has a market cap of more than half a trillion and revenue of $136Billion. A lot of business can participate in this economy and grow. How can this massive platform called Amazon be used smartly to grow your business.
In the fast changing world where number of countries have increased by three times in past half a century, is there still a relevance for global institutions like World Trade Organization, World Bank and International Monetary fund etc? May be there is because now World Trade Organization has to regulate business among more countries and for International Monetary Fund and World Bank, they need to help and support processes for newly created economies finding their way to grow in an interlinked Global economy. The advent of IT, increased speed of business, and Global connectivity has made the business more complex. Can these institutions still function as they were supposed to do or their role needs to change?
What are the future markets for growth
Is it still the BRIC’s (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) or the future belong to
(A)TIMP’s, Turkey, Indonesia, Mexico and the Philippines, or
(B)MINT Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey, or
(C)N11 Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Turkey, South Korea, and Vietnam or
(D)the Frontier Markets
Whichever of these acronyms are the future growth markets, it is evident that centre of economic gravity is definitely shifting towards East.
Digitization is now no more an option, but a necessity for survival. In the current Digital Age, general life is getting digitized at an amazing pace and all our day to day activities are knowingly or unknowingly getting digital around us and we are the beneficiaries. A simple task like buying groceries and other necessities of life have gone digital where consumers are getting the major benefit in terms of price and customer service. We are part of a digital revolution which has one of the biggest impacts in the history of mankind. Machine Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence, self-driving cars, cryptocurrencies, e-services are changing the way we conduct our daily routine and do business, or governments interact with citizens.
If we look at the profile of businesses, In the year 2011, the largest companies by market cap had only one digital age company. In a short span of 5 years, by the year 2016 all of the five largest companies were Digital businesses.
