Summer In The Shop CNC Router Tips Podcast Episode 72 Season 2: CNCRT72S2
Making things more confortable in the shop.
Summer in the shop has been busy and hot. Finding ways to make things more comfortable in the shop was my priority this summer. So I started tackling some projects I had been putting off.
When some florescent bulbs stopped working it was time to change them. But while I was at it I decided to install new LED bulbs to replace the florescent bulbs.LED bulbs have come way down in price and installing them can really drop your electrical bill and also really brighten up the shop.
Bill Griggs discusses his recent trip to Eastec conference (see episode 71). He also talked about the weekly Live CNC Router Mixers on Zoom every Wednesday at 7PM ET. Members get together to talk about CNC Routers and their project. Guest have included Phil DeCarlo The exotic Woodworker, Bull Shananigan from The Make Group, Mark Lindsay (Episode 63) from Mark Lindsay CNC, and Ned Gligic.
Talley Boatwright recently posted some pictures of his new vacuum table, which got Bill thinking about adding a vacuum table to his CNC Router. Bill picked up a vacuum pump motor from Oneida Air and began making plans to install it using some gaskets and advice from Alex Palm of Allstar CNC.
Vectric Ltd. is hosting an online users group meeting on October 5th.
Lastly, we remind people that it is time to get started on your seasonal CNC projects for the Holidays.

IN this episode we talk with my friend Mike Gencarelli about CNC automation. Mike Gencarelli is an experienced tool maker, automation expert, software developer and has probably one of the most interesting garage workshops.
Gencarelli writes about his adventures on his website https://mygarageshop.com/ where he displays his projects and talks about his machine shop which includes everything from CNC Router Table, Plasma cutter to milling machine.
Mike has built quite a wide variety of automated machines in his past. His work on an automated parachute harness sewing machine got him noticed Later he began work on a plasma table with a dual chamber water table and a removable 4th axis.
Mike Gencarelli decided that he wanted to automate some common CNC options to make them work better with Mach3. He developed software which allowed him to use multiple wifi relays to turn his equipment off and on. He hooked up his duct collection system, lights and water pumps to his SmartScreens Interface for Mach3 . SmartSreens for Mach3 integrates the control of simple to add Expansion Relays and Smart Wi-Fi Devices which can be controlled by SmartScreens through Mach3 via buttons on the screen, and MCodes in the GCode.

CNCRT 57: All About Limits
CNC Router Tips Podcast Episode 57
It's all about limits. No really limits are what keeps chaos at bay on our CNC Router tables. In this episode of CNC Router Tips Podcast Bill Griggs answers a listener's question about limit switches and Home switches.
Shawn Jones asked, "When building a slaved Y axis machine, what is the convention for using limit/home switches? Are they need on both rails or on a single rail?"
In Episode 57 we explain how to hook up limit switches, homing switches for slaved axis machines and also why you might want a switch on each rail. We also examine reasons why you would not.
We also discuss the types of wire needed, where you can buy limit switches and also how many you would need.
We also discuss some of the upgrades I have planned for my CNC Router Table.

Bill Griggs talks about what's new in Vectric Aspire V9. Vectric just released it's newest version of all their software including V9 of Aspire. We take a look at the 6 new major features and several minor features that were added to the V9 release.
Vectric focused on making the drawing process easier, more powerful and quicker for the user by adding these six new features.

Smart cursor - A much easier way of drawing and aligning objects to geometry
Quick keys - Adds precision to your shape by allowing typed values while creating geometry
Turn & spin -The turn tool takes a profile and turns it, like a potter’s wheel. the spin tool is similar but rather than the profile being rotated along the horizontal line, the profile is rotated about the vertical line
Array copy toolpath - You can duplicate one or more toolpaths as a block based on the dimensions you enter in its properties
Mirror mode - Allows you to define a component level so that it mirrors all its components. one way of thinking is that you can place virtual mirrors in the center of your job, vertically and/or horizontally.

CNCRT 50: CNCNUTZ WITH PETER PASSUELLO
CNC Youtube Content Creator
In this 50th episode of CNC Router Tips Podcast we talk with CNCNutz Peter Passello from Greymouth New Zealand. Peter is a CNC Youtube content creator and a very innovative inventor.
Bill Griggs celebrates his 50th episode by interviewing long time online friend Peter Passuello. We discuss the similarity of how we got into CNC even though we are half way around the world from each other.
Peter Passuello began his CNC Journey by building his first machine himself. He used locally available materials to substitute for hard to get parts. Being located on an island country makes getting parts expensive and difficult.

Build Your Own Makerspace with Mike Heidrick.
In the episode we talk with Mike Heidrick about why you should build your own makerspace. After trying unsuccessfully to work with local government to bring a makerspace to his community, Mike Heidrick decided to build his own makerspace. Aptly named the Mikeyspace, Mike built a 40’X64’X16’ polebarn with a 10’X24’ porch - two 14’X14’ overhead doors, 3 pedestrian doors, and 4 36”X48” double hung windows, and 5" thick concrete floor with radiant heat. The project has taken nearly 3 years to complete but features a full CNC machine shop, CNC woodworking shop, welding equipment and a drive in theater. And this is just the start.

How Much Should You Charge For CNC Work?
How much should you charge for CNC Work? This question comes up all the time. We look at what the average wage is for a CNC machine operator versus what the average shop rate is for a machine owner. If you are using your CNC Router as a business you have to think more like an owner than an operator. You are the CEO of your company not an employee. You have assumed all the risk and so should receive the rewards. Or should you?

CNC Router Tips Podcast Episode 33
Comparing Six CNC Router Tables.
In this episode we discuss and compare six different CNC Router Tables. We examine the question asked by our listener James Trimble about differences in CNC Router tables, what they were designed to do and how they stack up against each other.
Q: My question is regarding the differences between different levels of machines. I am currently building the mostly printed CNC which is an extremely low budget machine. But one that I think presents a lot of learning and hobby opportunities. My question is, what kind of limitations I will encounter in a machine like this. And what limitations and benefits will you find in different levels of machines ranging from other DIY builds like the Ox or Joescnc, all the way up to the full spectrum of commercial options such as the Stepcraft, Hytek Tools or even heavy industrial machines?.

Question: Jeff asked: Quick question for those with a cnc, are you using it just for hobby or are you actually making money like a business? What things are popular for your business? Any feedback or info you would like to share would be much appreciated. I am trying to determine if I can actually make money at this. Thanks

CNC Router Tips Podcast Episode 13
Question: Mark Slatem asks: Should I get a 2.2kw High Speed Spindle? I’m thinking of upgrading my spindle. I currently have a 400 watt spindle on a quite powerful DIY machine I’ve made. I’m thinking of getting one of these 2.2 kw Chinese made water cooled high speed spindles. I was wondering if you had some advice on that. Whether I should be going for a spindle that can do a greater range of RPM maybe from like 100 RPM to 24,000 RPM or is it okay to go for these water cooled spindles that only do from 8000 to 24,000 RPM?

Question: Marlo Swedzinski Thank you Bill.
I first located you with the “CNC Router Tips Podcast”.
I am not really interested in verbally asking a question, I will either ramble on or I will stutter and stammer too much.
Here is my thought or what I want to know.
For us beginners can you do a software review of the differences between some of the starter software?
What do you get with one that you don’t get with another etc.?
Is one a prerequisite for another? Eg: Do you need Vcarve pro to use CUT3D?
Vectric
Aspire $1995
VCarve Pro $699
VCarve Desktop $349
Cit2D Pro $449
Cut2D Desktop $149
Cut3D $299
PhotoVCARVE $149

How we do it:
In Mach3 you can set the velocity mode to either exact stop or Constant velocity. To do this go to General Configuration Logic the settings tab (page) and look for a button located above the Reset Button which says “Set Steps Per Unit”. Use this button to enter a distance to travel. Measure the actual distance traveled then enter the corrections.

How To Use an Xbox 360 Controller with MACH3.
Q: I saw you using an Xbox controller in one of your video to operate their CNC. How did you do that? I know some people use it to jog the machine and execute g-codes. I need some help.

How we do it:
We use an Xbox 360 Wireless controller for Windows to operate our CNC Router Table in Mach3. Download the plugin from the Machsupport website and load it into Mach3. Install the included wifi receiver and pair the controller with your computer.
Then we can assign functions to each button and stick on the Xbox360 wireless controller. These functions will allow us to control the CNC Router remotely.

How To Make Two Sided CNC Projects That Actually Line Up.
Q: Dylan asks: How do you make a two sided project that actually lines up?
http://cncroutertips.com/
http://cncroutertips.com/resources
http://themakersguide.com
How we do it:
We use Dowels aligned along the center line of the part. We drill two alignment holes along the vertical centerline of the part, one on the top and one on the bottom of the line. Next we extend those drilled holes into a sacrificial board clamped to the router table.
Insert dowels into the work piece and down into the sacrificial board. Clamp the work piece down and machine the first side. Flip the part over and use the dowels to align it. Clamp back down and machine the second side.
