If you’ve ever tuned a shortwave radio, you’ve likely heard it: a hypnotic, unending rhythm of ticks, tones, and disembodied voices cutting through the static. For over a century, NIST radio stations WWV in Colorado and WWVH in Hawaii have acted as the mechanical heartbeat of the United States, blanketing the globe with atomic-precision time.
But who is actually listening to these mysterious broadcasts in the age of GPS and smartphones?
In this episode, we dive into the fascinating world of the world's oldest continuously operating radio stations. We’ll explore the towering antennas of Fort Collins and Kauai, the iconic male and female voices that guide ships through storms, and the incredibly precise atomic clocks that make it all possible. Join us as we uncover how these legacy analog signals synchronized the modern world, survived the digital revolution, and why scientists, doomsday preppers, and amateur radio operators argue we still desperately need them today.
Synchronize your watches. It’s time to tune in.

In this episode, we dive into one of the most visionary and historically significant speeches of the 20th century: President Franklin D. Roosevelt's State of the Union Address, delivered to Congress on January 11, 1944.
As the tides of World War II were finally beginning to turn in favor of the Allies, FDR was already looking ahead. We explore the profound shift in his rhetoric—from surviving "the world's greatest war against human slavery" to ensuring that Americans returned home to a society worth fighting for. We break down Roosevelt's powerful argument that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security, and we unpack his legendary proposal for a "Second Bill of Rights."
In this episode, we discuss:
Whether you're a history buff, a political junkie, or just curious about the roots of today's economic debates, you won't want to miss this deep dive into a speech that imagined a new foundation for American prosperity.

In this episode, we pull back the curtain on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)—an alliance that has been the bedrock of transatlantic security for over 75 years, and yet finds itself at a critical turning point in 2026.
What is NATO?
Founded in 1949, NATO began as a collective defense pact among North American and European nations. At its heart lies Article 5: the principle that an armed attack against one member is an attack against all. This "all-for-one" commitment has defined global security for decades, acting as both a deterrent against aggression and a forum for political and military cooperation.
The Current Landscape
While the mission remains the same—safeguarding the freedom and security of its 32 member states—the environment has changed drastically. In this episode, we explore the challenges defining the current era:
Why It Matters
Whether you’re a policy buff or just trying to make sense of the headlines, this episode breaks down why NATO is more than just a treaty—it’s a dynamic, evolving political machine. We move beyond the jargon to ask the big question: Can the alliance adapt fast enough to meet the security challenges of 2026 and beyond?
Join us as we weigh the arguments on the future of the Atlantic bond, the debate over burden-sharing, and what it truly takes to keep the peace in an increasingly unpredictable world.

Suddenly, your mailbox is overflowing with pre-approved credit cards, shady loan offers, and an endless stream of junk mail. What gives?
In this episode, we dive into the frustrating, immediate, and highly profitable link between unfreezing your credit file and the avalanche of unsolicited mail that follows. We expose how the major credit bureaus monetize your "unfrozen" status, why the junk mail industry is watching your credit report, and, most importantly, the exact steps you can take to stop the paper jam and reclaim your mailbox.

Political disagreements over the national budget are not unique to the United States, but government shutdowns are — and have unfortunately occurred several times over the past few decades. Government shutdowns not only interrupt crucial services and programs, but they also impose costs on federal agencies. Here, we explain the history of government shutdowns in the United States and how other countries avoid them.

JoAnn "Jo" Grensing, 64, of Meridian, Idaho, returned home to her heavenly father September 2, 2025. She was born January 14, 1961, in San Gabriel, California as the fourth daughter of Neva and Rollo Barrett.
Her early years were spent in California and St. George, Utah, before the family eventually settled in Meridian, Idaho. JoAnn's kindness and caregiving nature were evident from an early age as personalities began to emerge among the children.
A graduate of Meridian High School (1979), JoAnn excelled academically and sang joyfully in church, and in the school choir. After graduation, she attended beauty school, worked locally, and soon began an adventurous chapter working in motels in neighboring states. She later settled back in Idaho, where she became the proud mother of son, Everett, and daughter, Neva. Motherhood was her greatest joy, and she faced life's challenges with resilience, faith, and grace.
In 1994, JoAnn met the love of her life, Larry Grensing, at an autumn church dance. Their connection was immediate, and they married that same December. Together, they blended their families with love, and Joann embraced her stepdaughter, Celina as her own. Joann's affection for family and her ability to nurture those around her defined her life.
Her career reflected her natural gift for caretaking. She worked as a CNA and later as Director of Admissions at Capitol Care Center, always offering compassion and comfort to others. She also cared tenderly for her father and later her husband during their final years.
After Larry's retirement, the couple moved to Garden Valley, where they cherished time in the mountains, enjoying nature, and building a life in their tight-knit community. They helped establish the Payette Forward thrift store, a non-profit that reflected their giving spirits. Though they later returned to Meridian for Larry's medical care, JoAnn continued to build lasting friendships with neighbors and her church community.
After Larry's passing in 2021, JoAnn carried on with courage, drawing strength from her family, her faith, and the many relationships she cherished. She will always be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, beloved sister, and dear friend to many. Her radiant presence, kindness, and warmth touched all who knew her.
JoAnn is survived by her children: Everett (Jeremy), Neva, and Celina (McQ); granddaughter, Hailee; siblings: Peggy, Mary, and Rollo; and her extended family who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, and parents.

Midori Koyama Obituary
Midori was born in West Torrence, California on Dec., 27, 1930 to Masaichiro Marumoto and Asako Okuda. Midori was raised in Southern California until age 11 at which time she and her family moved to Utah as part of the voluntary evacuation “option” of Executive Order 9066 during World War II. After moving to Utah she attended schools in the Clearfield and Layton, UT area and graduated from Davis High School in Ogden, UT in 1950. She attended Weber State College and worked at Hill Air Force Base.
Midori’s father was a judo instructor in the Ogden area. At her father’s judo dojo annual tournament in 1960 she saw George Koyama, a judo instructor from Nampa, eating lunch. She grabbed the teapot out of her mother’s hand and walked over to serve him tea and the rest as they say is history. They were married in 1962 at which time Midori moved to Nampa where she and George set up their home and started a family.
One of Midori’s passions was supporting education and working with children. She began working for the Nampa School District in 1970 and worked at Lincoln, Kenwood & Centennial elementary schools. Midori was part of the inaugural staff of Centennial school when it opened in 1976 and worked there until her retirement in 2004. She served as an instructional aide and librarian during her 28 year career at Centennial. At one point as librarian at Centennial she got the idea of selling pencils and origami cranes to raise money to buy books for the library. The idea was so successful she continued and expanded her product line. Kids at the school would save up their coins to make a purchase at “Mrs. Koyama’s School Store” every week. While no official tally exists, she raised thousands of dollars used to purchase books for the library. Because of that work and her dedication, a section of the Centennial School library was dedicated in 1995 as “Mrs. Koyama’s Book Garden” an honor in which she took great pride. She volunteered at Centennial after retirement and continued to raise money for the school through her store.
Another passion of Midori’s was sharing and educating others about Japanese culture and the experiences of the Japanese Americans during WWII. Before leaving California Midori’s father, in fear of retribution and racism, piled many of the family’s Japanese possessions in a heap to be burned. Midori secretly pulled a favorite story book of historic Japanese heroes and hid it inside her belongings and took it to Utah unbeknownst to anyone in the family. Perhaps spurred by that and other similar childhood experiences she wanted pass along her culture and experiences to future generations. For many summers she held Japanese language classes for local area children. She also presented information to many local school classes about her WWII relocation experience.
Midori passed away due to a brief and sudden illness on Sunday, June 12, 2011. She is survived by her husband, George. She is also survived by her son John, daughter-in-law Joyce, and 3 grandchildren - Kristina, Jackie and Mason Koyama all from Sacramento, CA. Her surviving brother and sisters are Hiroki Marumoto of Layton, UT; Yukari “Vicky” Mikesell of Belmont, CA; Bill Marumoto of Westminster, CA and Seiko Kikuta of Eugene, OR.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

The Gilded Age (roughly 1877–1898) was a period of rapid economic growth, industrialization, and wealth accumulation in the United States. It was named after The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today (1873), a novel by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner, which satirized the era’s materialism and deep social inequalities. Beneath the glittering surface of prosperity lay significant political corruption, poverty, and labor struggles.

Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is an electoral system in which voters rank candidates by preference (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) rather than voting for a single candidate. If no candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, the candidate with the fewest first choices is eliminated, and votes for that candidate are transferred to voters' next choices. This process continues until a candidate earns more than 50% of the vote.
Benefits of RCV over Popular Vote or Electoral College:
In conclusion, Ranked Choice Voting can offer a more representative, inclusive, and fair system of voting compared to both the popular vote and Electoral College models. However, its adoption at a national level would require considerable legal, political, and logistical changes.

Interesting Article: Pew Research Center: Voter Turnout 2018-2022
The average lifespan in the USA varies slightly based on demographic factors, but as of the most recent data (2021), the overall life expectancy is approximately 76 years (73 for males and 79 for females). This is slightly lower than in previous years, partially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Presidential Elections
In the U.S., presidential elections occur every 4 years. Assuming someone lives for about 76 years, they would have the potential to experience approximately 19 presidential elections during their lifetime.
However, the actual number depends on when the person becomes eligible to vote (at age 18). So if someone turns 18 and lives to 76, they could participate in around 15 presidential elections.
Midterm Elections
In addition to presidential elections, there are midterm elections every 2 years, which take place halfway through each presidential term. In a lifetime of 76 years, an individual could potentially participate in about 29 midterm elections, starting from age 18.
In summary, an American voter can potentially participate in around 15 presidential elections and 29 midterm elections in an average lifetime, along with numerous state and local elections.
As of recent data, there were approximately 168 million registered voters in the U.S. during the 2020 general election, out of a total eligible population of around 239 million people. Voter registration and turnout fluctuate slightly from election to election.
Here’s an overview of voter turnout in major elections from 2016 to 2022:
Why Doesn't Every Eligible Person Vote?
Several factors contribute to why many eligible voters do not cast ballots:

Thomas Midgley Jr. (May 18, 1889 – November 2, 1944) was an American mechanical and chemical engineer. He played a major role in developing leaded gasoline (tetraethyl lead) and some of the first chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), better known in the United States by the brand name Freon; both products were later banned from common use due to their harmful impact on human health and the environment. He was granted more than 100 patents over the course of his career.
Midgley contracted polio in 1940 and was left disabled; in 1944, he was found strangled to death by a device he devised to allow him to get out of bed unassisted. It was reported to the public that he had been accidentally killed by his own invention, but his death was declared by the coroner to be a suicide.

On March 18, 1937 the New London School in London, Texas exploded right around 3pm killing 295+ students and faculty as well as injuring 300+ more. This was the most deadly school explosion in united states history and led to the addition of Mercaptans to the final product.
Mercaptans are sulfur-containing compounds primarily used as odorants in natural gas, propane, and other fuel gases to provide a detectable odor for safety purposes.

Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring minerals made up of heat-resistant fibers. It was used in thousands of U.S. consumer products before the dangers of asbestos were known. Asbestos causes mesothelioma, lung cancer and other cancers. Asbestos is regulated in the U.S., but not banned.
Asbestos has been with us since the 1800s but wasn't regulated until after it impacted lives for nearly 100 years. There are still legacy exposure risks in certain career fields and residential situations.

Is it 1776 or 2022? Does the United States Constitution really fit in our current world? Are we prepared to go back to white christian men owning everything and everyone? Is that what the "God" in the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" would like us to do? Weren't men and women created equal? Don't we all have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? At what point do you get to define someone else's happiness?

Florida's HB 1557, also known as the 'Don't Say Gay' bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law
Public school teachers in Florida are banned from holding classroom instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity after Florida's Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, signed the controversial "Parental Rights in Education" bill.
The law states: "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards." Parents would be able to sue districts over violations.
DeSantis said teaching kindergarten-aged kids that "they can be whatever they want to be" was "inappropriate" for children.
DeSantis and other Republicans have repeatedly described the rules as reasonable, saying children should learn about sexual orientation and gender identity from their parents, not in schools.
"We will make sure that parents can send their kids to school to get an education, not an indoctrination," the governor said when he signed it into law.
--Legal Challenge--
The challenge filed in federal court in Tallahassee on behalf of Equality Florida and Family Equality alleges that the law violates the constitutionally protected rights of free speech, equal protection and due process of students and families.
"This effort to control young minds through state censorship — and to demean LGBTQ lives by denying their reality — is a grave abuse of power," the lawsuit says.
"The United States Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that LGBTQ people and their families are at home in our constitutional order. The State of Florida has no right to declare them outcasts, or to treat their allies as outlaws, by punishing schools where someone dares to affirm their identity and dignity," the lawsuit says.
The law deliberately employs broad terms and invites arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement, empowering parents to be roving censors who can sue school boards for damages based on any perceived violation, the lawsuit adds.
Many critics have said the law's language, particularly the phrases "classroom instruction" and "age appropriate," could be interpreted so broadly that discussion in any grade could trigger lawsuits, creating a classroom atmosphere where teachers would avoid the subjects entirely.

Have you ever experienced a toxic mindset?
It takes two to tango, Fake it until you make it, It's not worth trying, etc.
Unhealthy or toxic patterns of thinking can develop from trauma, injury, and neglect. Common damaging mindsets include, “I'm always an outsider,” “I have trouble trusting people,” and “Everyone abandons me.” Therapy can disrupt existing thought patterns and help patients make choices that produce healthier outcomes.

Scott Yenor made some statements about his opposing views towards feminism in America. This man is a college professor who stands against higher education ideals like colleges and universities, yet has personally and financially benefited from such an organization, Boise State University in Boise, ID.
This first clip is from November 01, 2021 and is Scott Yenor's address at the second national conservatism conference.

Scott Yenor responds to outrage on previous statements
Family is important, but a family cannot exist in today's landscape simply on a prayer or faith. Every person has a purpose. Men can stay at home, women can stay at home, as long as they can afford to do so; keeping a roof over the heads of their loved ones.
Do we deserve a future in support of feminism? Is the lack of COVID-19 health practices part of the desire to purge human life as punishment by the radical conservative christian right?
Perhaps the lack of confidence in the future is the reckless re-population of this planet? The unchecked proliferation of natural and finite resources?
"Soy boys" a slang phrase to call plant-based and environmentally conscientious men "weak" in the eyes of artery clogged masculine men who are preparing to die prematurely of a massive heart attack; men who are scared to question the old ways and adapt to the knowledge of today and sustainability of tomorrow.
Misogyny is "dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women."
Feminism is "the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes."

Are you living paycheck to paycheck? Does the thought of managing your bills stress you out?
You're not alone!
Everett wants to share some personal advice that helped him go from $4,000 in credit card debt to 100% debt-free in just 4 years. Not only is Everett debt-free, but he also has enough savings to cover large emergencies and even borrow against that savings for purchases of high-cost items like a new phone.
While Everett is certainly proud of his hard work, he is humble enough to know that not everyone can get the same results on their own, so he wants to share the mindset and thinking that helped yield a positive end goal.
Nearly 50% of the baby boomer generation does not have savings for retirement or emergencies. Everett's late grandfather instilled the wisdom to "invest as much as you can, as early as you can" and that advice has garnered financial stability for Everett and his husband.

Last week I openly promoted Visible Wireless as a great new option in affordable and transparent cellphone service.
I have removed my past episode form public view because I had an experience that has left me uncomfortable suggesting services that are half-baked and faulty at best.
I'm going back to T-Mobile, the original uncarrier and I'm going to be a post-pay customer again because all carriers treat low income or cost-minded prepay customers like garbage.

UPDATE 10/5/2021: Visible by Verizon really messed up and took my phone offline for 19 hours with no explanation as to what happened or why. They really could not have cared about me as a customer. I have decided to go back to T-Mobile as a post-pay customer, and have removed my glowing review of Visible Wireless in this episode. I DO NOT recommend them to anyone for reliable service at any bargain price.
The cellphone number that I have has been online and in my possession since 2005. In 2005 I was a junior in high school and had just gotten a Samsung flip phone on my father's wife's Verizon plan. Verizon's service has been amazing in Idaho for decades, and frequently is the only (if any at all) service that you can get in the central mountains.
In 2012 I started working for Verizon Wireless as a tier II tech support agent, tasked with helping customers troubleshoot and fix device issues, and service problems. While I worked at Verizon I learned about their billing structure and how a phone plan was $60/month plus there was a $20 (basic phone) or $30 (smartphone) access fee that essentially allowed the customer's device to access the features of their account. I was upset with learning this, and I terminated service for $135 and took my phone to Cricket Wireless for 9 months, before joining T-Mobile in 2013.
So much has changed with technology in nearly a decade, so much has improved, but in many ways so much hasn't. I was tired of paying $75 a month for unlimited service when I hardly ever used that service. I switched from a post-pay T-Mobile account to a prepay T-Mobile account in 2017 which lowered my cost in half while I still got all the features you expect with a wireless phone provider. When the 5G was rolled out in Boise in December 2020, I got a new iPhone 12 but the 5G was useless and I had to disable that radio on my phone to opt for 4G LTE service instead.
I was finally tired of the boilerplate "we'd love to help" responses to my frustration, and in August 2021 I decided to try Visible Wireless at $25 a month, with unlimited everything, and on Verizon's 5G network. I flew both carriers on my phone to test them in the situations and locations I frequented and by the end of my T-Mobile billing cycle, I had seen enough to port my number to its fourth carrier and join Visible Wireless.

Do women have autonomy over their body? Texas and many others in the "pro life" spectrum seem to believe that women should be forced to carry a fetus to full term, and enter another human into the realm of life. If you're a bone marrow donor, you get to choose if you save someones life, if you're an organ donor you get to choose if your organs are used to save a life after you die or whether they can be used for scientific analysis and understanding. What if the government could force you to donate your body (alive or otherwise) to causes you may or may not support? What if someone could sue you for not giving up part of your body for their need or cause? We're truly in dangerous waters if we don't believe in individual freedoms and personal body autonomy.

ABUSE-GRIEF-LOVE: Part 2
On this episode, Everett shares his experience of Grief after loosing his dog Cedric in 2020 to a blood clot. Grief is a process that we all experience in life at various times, and it is something that is as unique as each person is, in terms of the course it takes. There are healthy and unhealthy mechanisms of grief, but most importantly it is critical that we show love and empathy for ourselves and those who are making that journey. No two paths are identical in length or emotion.

Part one of a three-part series: ABUSE - GRIEF - LOVE
April is child abuse awareness month, and Everett wants to share some personal experiences of abuse. Everett also wants to get a message to those who were abused to know the warning signs and red flags, and to actively work to ensure they don't unintentionally pay-forward that cycle of abuse.
Here is the video Everett mentioned "14 Subtle Things Abusive Parents Do" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxMEE_SD2dQ)
These are the warning signs of child abuse:
1. Little to no privacy
2. invalidating emotions and reality
3. Giving the silent treatment
4. Playing the victim card
5. Gaslighting
6. Threats of violence
7. Favoring a child over another
8. Being overly critical
9. Taking control of your finances
10. Emotionally Absent
11. Using guilt
12. Humiliation
13. Earning your parent's love
14. Taking away your independence

We have a president who is trying to overturn a legitimate and fair election as defined in our country's constitution. This week Everett discusses the lack of education and mental health awareness by the Republican party to intercept and save our nation from being hijacked by the 45th president. Included in this production is excerpts from the phone call with Georgia's Secretary of State where President Trump sounds more like a mob boss, powerfully suggesting, what his minion should do to save their own well-being.

This week Everett celebrates Hanukkah and shares some information about choosing and placing a Menorah for the celebration. Everett also goes over other local events including the defacing of the Anne Frank human rights memorial in Boise, and the protestors who gathered outside outgoing Ada County Commissioner Lachiondo's private residence. The things we're seeing from several individuals lately is disturbing at the very least. We need to take a stand on who we are and what is okay in our modern society.

This week features a 30-minute program from 1951 that was recorded on an Electronic Transcription record for/by KIDO in Boise Idaho. The program was called "Big City Serenade" and features historic and cultural talking points about Boise Idaho and music performed by the NBC orchestra.
The record that this came from was housed for years in a picture frame behind glass and was digitally captured by the History of Idaho Broadcasting Foundation.

This week's podcast is about Electronic Transcription records that were used in the late 1920s through the 1940s in commercial broadcasts. The United States government used this technology through the mid-1990s.

So much going on this month. My computers are proving to be antiquated beyond my expectations and have been making the podcasting process more difficult. Thankfully a new computer has been ordered and is being built by HP in the next few days. Things will get better, and easier; I appreciate those of you still loyally listening to the podcast!
This week's episode is a random reflection of thoughts and events, with some inspirational quotes my friends shared. Finally, I close out the episode with Charlie Chaplin's 1940 "unite" speech from the "Great Dictator" movie; his words hold true even today.
Let me know your thoughts! Call or Text 208-391-2808 (it goes straight to voicemail, so call whenever you're inspired to share).

This week I thought we could use a break from the news, politics, and current events of our day. The goal of this podcast is to be diverse and not focus on a single topic or subject. Join me for a quick historic synopsis of KIDO-AM's 92-year history! This episode features historic audio that is courtesy of Art Gregory, President, History of Idaho Broadcasting Foundation. There are also some clips from 2006-2009 that are from my own collection and reflect my own time as a producer at this historic station. If you'd like more historic information about Boise's Radio & TV stations, please visit http://www.historyofidahobroadcasting.org for more!

This week on Everything with Everett, I discuss the disgusting rhetoric of the United States of America President, Donald J Trump in the Access Hollywood tape. I talk about how glorifying abuse of women leads to much larger issues related to child abuse and sex trafficking. When a man running for office brags that he tried to go after a married woman because he could, and because “when you’re a celebrity, they let you do whatever you want” those are words that say that they do not respect women at any stage of life.
I transition into an apology by Ted Yoho about comments that he made to the media about a colleague where he called her a term for a female dog. Following the speech of Ted Yoho, I highlight the very well-spoken presentation of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez where she highlights that you can be a man of God, a married father of a daughter, and still abuse women with your words and actions.

This week on the podcast I'm talking about schools re-opening amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. I also discuss the issue of stigma that seems to be present in certain generations and why we need to overcome the judgment of others due to a lack of understanding.
