In this series I had hoped to explore some of the parallels between the musical Les Mis and the Book of Job.  Both of the stories are filled with heartache.  Let’s play a clip near the beginning of Les Mis.  Jean Valjean, played in the movie by Hal Jackman, has been caught stealing the Bishop’s silver.  He is about to be sent back to jail, but the Bishop insists that it was all a gift and forgives him.  This is the epiphany moment when grace breaks forth and Jean Valjean knows real forgiveness.

That moment of forgiveness is the moment of transformation for Jean Valjean.  In the Book of Job it its the appearance of God that changes the heart of Job and his friends.  It is not an answer to any of Job’s questions, it is an epiphany moment and a moment of grace.  Let’s listen now to Pastor Brian McVitty at Celebration Church, Barrie ON.
