The private liberal arts university Lewis & Clark college, in Portland, is the first in the Pacific Northwest to require its students to get COVID-19 vaccines in order to attend in the fall. Students can register for the fall regardless of their vaccination status but they must be fully vaccinated by Oct. 15. Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to get the COVID-19 vaccine but are not required. The university’s Associate Dean for Health & Wellness, John Hancock, said Lewis & Clark’s twin goals are to keep students safe and get back to their mission of an in-person, hands-on liberal arts environment.
