Today's readings - Deuteronomy chapters 4-5 - give a long introduction to the reason why the people must keep the Law. It is clear to see that the texts are shaped in such a way that Moses is not just speaking to the "new generation" of his day but also to a "new generation" coming out of exile in Babylon several centuries later. It's good for them and for us to listen again to the Ten Commandments so that we don't forget who we are called to be.
