In the long years of British colonialism, women from Asia travelled all over the world, as maids, or child carers, or both, typically for well-off English families who had been living in Asia. 

They were the first migrant domestic workers.  

While there is more awareness of them in the UK, because more went there, an unknown number also came to Australia.
