In today's episode, we are thrilled to sit down with Ben Killoy from Military Veteran Dad. Through his podcast, Ben is teaching dads to ignite passion for fatherhood and creating an environment to help male veterans come home physically and mentally.
There is a joke in the military, "if the military wanted you to have something, they would have issued it." There are no orders or issued resources that teach you how to process a feeling or how to deal with that feeling in reality. While service members spend months training to go to war, they spend mere days training to come home.
Ben launched his business, while being a stay-at-home dad, to raise the bar on the fatherhood journey and to help dads realize that they can step powerfully into this journey and be present with the gift that is your family. After his position was eliminated, Ben was able to transition his "side hustle" and the podcast he had on his heart into his purpose. He has created his business entirely from home. Military Veteran Dad is a 100% virtual organization that is able to serve fathers all over the work. By doing this without a brick-and-mortar, Ben has realized the power of remote work and that it is a lot more attainable than people think.
Ben looked at losing his job as an opportunity to recognize his passion and the kind of freedom that chasing your passion and working from home can bring to you, especially as a parent. Working from home helped him to give himself permission to create the version of his life he wanted to be living.
So here's the hard question: How can you balance working from home while still being present as a part of your family and as a parent? Ben's advice is to start with yourself. Look five years into your past and think about the resource that you wish you would have had five years ago.
