Fracking is an issue in the national election. Trump is all in; Harris has not been clear where she stands. Let us briefly review pros and cons of fracking.

Fracking (also known as hydraulic fracturing) is a well stimulation technique involving the fracturing of formations in bedrock by a pressurized liquid. The process involves the high-pressure injection of “fracking fluid” (primarily water, containing sand suspended with the aid of thickening agents) into a wellbore to create cracks in the deep-rock formations through which natural gas, petroleum, and brine will flow more freely. Hydraulic fracturing produces fractures in the rock formation that stimulate the flow of natural gas or oil, increasing the volumes that can be recovered.

Hydraulic fracturing began as an experiment in 1947, and the first commercially successful application followed in 1949. As of 2012, 2.5 million “frac jobs” had been performed worldwide on oil and gas wells, over one million of those within the U.S. A 2015 Harvard Business School/Boston Consulting Group analysis estimates that shale development created roughly 2.7 million U.S. jobs in the first decade of the shale revolution.

A 2013 study, commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, projected fracking will create a total of 3.5 million U.S. jobs by 2035. Drilling and hydraulic fracturing have made the United States a major crude oil exporter but leakage of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, has dramatically increased. Methane is the second-most contributor to global warming. Increased oil and gas production from the decade-long fracking boom has led to lower prices for consumers, with near-record lows of the share of household income going to energy expenditures.

Hydraulic fracturing is highly controversial. Its proponents advocate the economic benefits of more extensively accessible hydrocarbons, as well as replacing coal with natural gas, which burns more cleanly and emits less carbon dioxide (CO2), and energy independence. Opponents of fracking argue that these
are outweighed by the environmental impacts, which include groundwater and surface water contamination, noise and air pollution, and the triggering of earthquakes, along with the resulting hazards to public health and the environment. Adherence to regulation and safety procedures are required to avoid further negative impacts.

The scale of methane leakage associated with hydraulic fracturing is uncertain, and there is some evidence that leakage may cancel out any greenhouse gas emissions benefit of natural gas relative to other fossil fuels.

Indiana has a history of oil and gas production, particularly in the southwestern part of the state, where hydraulic fracturing is used to enhance production from older wells and access tight formations. While the scale of fracking in Indiana is relatively small, it plays a role in the state’s energy industry.

According to CNBC, artificial intelligence (AI) could drive a natural gas boom as power companies face surging electricity demand.

Natural gas producers are planning for a significant spike in demand over the next decade, as artificial intelligence drives a surge in electricity consumption that renewables may struggle to meet alone.

After a decade of flat power growth in the U.S., electricity demand is forecast to grow as much as 20% by 2030, according to a Wells Fargo analysis published in April. Power companies are moving to quickly secure energy as the rise of AI coincides with the expansion of domestic semiconductor and battery manufacturing as well as the electrification of the nation’s vehicle fleet.

AI data centers alone are expected to add about 323 terawatt hours of electricity demand in the U.S. by 2030, according to Wells Fargo. The forecast power demand from AI alone is seven times greater than New York City’s current annual electricity onsumption of 48 terawatt hours. Goldman Sachs projects that data centers will represent 8% of total U.S. electricity consumption by the end of the decade.

Surging electricity loads will require an energy source that can jump into the breach and meet spiking demand during conditions when renewables are not generating enough power. The natural gas industry is betting gas will serve as the preferred choice.

In Indiana, renewables account for just ten percent of our power generation, putting our state in the lowest third of all states. In the legislature, there remains substantial opposition to anything but coal. However, one major project has snuck through.

According to Inside Indiana Business, Mammoth Solar is involved in a project in Northwest Indiana which is expected to be the largest solar project in the United States. Over 2.8 million panels will generate more than 1 gigawatt of power. The first 400 MW phase was completed in July 2024.

The country’s largest solar farm is being built on 13,000 acres in Starke and Pulaski counties. It is largely rural farmland with a total combined population of about 35,000. A new initiative with landowners will make those fields look more like what locals are
accustomed to: full of crops and animals.

Doral Renewables, the Pennsylvania-based company behind the Mammoth Solar project, has plans to expand the use of the solar farm to benefit locals and support their environmentally motivated values. Through the dual-land-use project, the company is partnering with local landowners to tend to livestock and cultivate crops on the same acres as the solar panels. Called agrivoltaics, the company wants to act as innovators in the country’s growing solar market, doubling the use of the land and inviting researchers to study its impact.

“We consider the sun as another harvest, another crop,” said Ed Baptista, director of development of agrivoltaics & green hydrogen for Doral. “When you analyze the economics of what we are getting or the farmers are getting with our solar project, it’s far
more of than that they are having right now with a standard crops production.”

As solar energy gains momentum in Indiana and across the country, the $1.5 billion Mammoth Solar project is one of the most ambitious: generating 1.6 gigawatts of power, which is enough to power 275,000 homes. Mammoth Solar is being completed in three phases broken down into north, south and central plots of land. The second phase kicked off in November 2022. Throughout the project, about 800 people were hired and about 250 remain operating the panels. About 70% of employment was locally sourced.
