Archer ArcherSafety in Brenham ISD schools, accountability and the school district’s current administration were some of the topics covered during KWHI’s Candidates Forum Wednesday night for the eight people running for Brenham School Board.

All candidates came to Brenham National Bank to reply to questions from the audience, KWHI listeners and the news media on various issues facing Brenham ISD and education.

The reading ability of young students was one matter discussed. Position 2 challenger Archer Archer said developing those skills is crucial to the rest of a student’s development.

Bonnie BrinkmeyerPosition 1 candidate Bonnie Brinkmeyer also addressed reading, saying it starts in the home.

James FrankeStudent discipline was another concern brought forth. Position 1 candidate James Franke took a hard-line stance, recommending restrictions on cell phones and a concise discipline policy.

David JantziPosition 4 challenger David Jantzi wants to ensure that teachers are able to perform instruction in the classroom without any distractions.

Kelvin RavenWhen asked about the possibility of implementing a program to allow trained, volunteering educators to carry handguns on campus, most candidates were open to the possibility, but Position 4 incumbent Kelvin Raven was opposed, saying a teacher should not have to have that level of responsibility.

Kyle HafnerPosition 3 candidate Kyle Hafner does not feel the district’s handling of existing facilities lends itself to building a new school using bond funds.

Dr. Michael AltmanAsked about whether the candidates thought Brenham ISD is too “top-heavy” in the administration, Position 2 incumbent Dr. Michael Altman said a balance has to be struck between administrators and teachers.

Artis Edwards Sr.Position 3 candidate Artis Edwards Sr. said he is up to the challenge of raising Brenham ISD’s standards.

Candidates were also asked for their level of confidence in the present administration at Brenham ISD. Raven and Dr. Altman answered that organizational improvements are being made and that the district is headed in the right direction. Hafner stated his opinion of the administration is "not high", while Franke said he would give a "3 at best" on a scale of 1 to 5. Archer said there is "a lot of room for improvement" and that transparency has been an issue. Jantzi said there are "a lot of red flags" but wants to examine more closely to get the overall picture. Edwards said the board is tasked with making sure that other school districts look up to Brenham ISD. Brinkmeyer answered similarly, saying the board is part of the school's leadership team and can hold everyone to higher expectations.

Early voting begins on Monday and continues through May 2nd. Election Day is May 6th.
