Elderly and lonely people; perhaps their partners Having passed away, may be shy or reticent, but gathering with other folks for a cup of tea and tea or coffee and cake may create a new dimension to their lives.

The elderly, can feel isolated and eventually ‘disappear’ into themselves. They may not have families nearby to provide empathy and support. The elderly population is growing significantly; most living longer than ever before.

As one of the volunteers at the local community center, I am so pleased to make a difference in elderly folks’ views on engaging with like-minded people. There are many who know each other as friends and gather around one of the tables, ‘talking for England’; a lot of chatting while enjoying delicious cakes, tea, and coffee. A guest attending for the first time can be a little apprehensive, but on noticing the easy, relaxed atmosphere; no obligation, and sensing friendship and kindness, soon become relaxed.

Volunteers welcome them and they choose an appropriate table to sit with fellow guests. Sometimes they recognize someone they know. And then it is time to sample the cakes and cookies. Some of which are provided by a generous baker in town. Almost all the guests are in their eighties or even nineties and possess such a sense of humor. Pure delight!

There is a truly wonderful atmosphere of empathy and friendliness.

The topic of cakes sometimes creates conversation focused on Belgian chocolate brownies to lemon sponge cakes. There is some humor because I just love chocolate brownies! One or two guests after being served cakes at the ‘goodie’ table hide such cakes behind their backs pretending I won’t see them! Such laughter and smiles.

There are around 35+ guests and increasing as local residents recommend the Chat-Tea Café. Volunteers take orders and serve the tea, coffee, and goodies. We sit with guests and chat. Sometimes, a guitarist comes along, sings, and plays. His Dad was a volunteer and 93 years old. Very special.

Occasionally someone accompanies a person with dementia. By the end of the event, they are very, very gently engaging, or just sitting comfortably having a cake and tea. So special.

So many compliments are afforded to volunteers. We volunteer because we just love making a difference.
