Grateful for Grace

Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Luke 17:17–18

Sunday’s gospel features Jesus healing ten lepers. Nine of the lepers follow the instruction of Jesus and show themselves to the priest, while the one who was a Samaritan thanks Jesus. On the surface it seems that Jesus is hailing the gratefulness of the Samaritan and chastising the lack of gratefulness of the nine. There is more to this situation than there appears however.
