Holy Sabbath

Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. Luke 13:10–13

Jesus healing the bent over woman was a liberation. Jesus healing the bent over woman on the sabbath was an abomination. Both statements, depending on your perspective, are true. The sabbath was a day of rest, a day God appointed for humanity to have relief from work. Over time, this liberating gift from God became a calcified law that served its own purpose. This happens in our spiritual life, our work life, our civic life and more. Join us Sunday as we consider the liberating power of Jesus and how many times we resist it.
